As one of the people who requested this drummer, thanks for checking him out! I'm glad you enjoyed it! That video is from about a decade ago; he's actually even better now than back then, but he, like me, is on the wrong side of 40 now, so I'm not sure if he is going to push himself even harder for the next album they're currently working on. As for switching which hand he is blasting with, it is less about "showing off" and more about trying to make sure his one arm doesn't get terrible cramps or give out on him during touring, playing sets of 45 minutes to an hour nightly filled with songs as fast and difficult, if not faster and even more difficult, than this one. He's not the only modern death metal drummer that uses this technique, either, but Spencer is all about trying to use as many different muscle groups as he can for his drumming to eek out a little bit of extra stamina and speed. If you take the time to watch the video again you can see him do this with his feet as well; for mid paced and "slow" ("slow" for Spencer at least) bass drum hits he keeps his feet covering the entire bass pedal, but when he wants to go extra fast he only uses the tips of his feet at the bottom of the pedal to use a different muscle group. You were quite observant to notice Oli's vocal style is very rhythmic. Spencer actually helped him develop his style in the beginning; they took inspiration from speed rappers like Tech N9ne, Busta Rhymes, Eminem, etc... but also from death metal bands like Spawn of Possession, Cryptopsy (whose drummer you just reacted to, Flo Mounier!) and Deicide, who also used quick, rhythmic death metal vocals as more of a percussive element. There's a few lyric videos and a vocal play through that they've released on TH-cam that shows how incredibly fast Oli is; the guy is writing science horror fiction novels in poetic verse and spitting them out hundreds of words at a time per song. It's quite impressive, but given that you could probably write a thesis on a deep dive of any of the musician's performances in Archspire, it is kind of "par for the course" for them... Which is pretty awesome; the Vancouver, BC metal scene seems to be really awesome these days!
Dude that was so interesting! I feel like learned so much about metal from these couple of paragraphs. Seriously thank u. I forget sometime just how physically demanding playing this type of music is, it like you're a legit Olympic level athlete. Also to know that the vocalist think that much about what they are doing is illuminating to say the least. I alway thought the vocals were an after thought in death metal but to hear that guys are writing deep science horror fiction and slaying hundreds of words in a song is epic! I now have so much more to watch out for. Thanks!
The hand switching is actually a technique used to maintain incredibly fast speed without sacrificing too much consistency. Great reaction, keep them coming!
4:40 - iirc in an interview he mentioned that switching back and forth is easier for him than maintaining it with a single hand, I can't recall if it was a mechanical thing, endurance or both. But Spencer really has his technique down to a science.
Yesss I’ve been learning a lot about this. Someone sent a link where he’s explaining it and ya it both. Mechanical and endurance oriented. 🤘🤘 thanks for the comment!
Haha just straight up "I'm never gonna try to play anything like that". Fair enough dude. I'm primarily a bass player and felt the same watching this band.
I am so happy to see you discover Spencer Prewett. It's one hell of a rabbit hole. He switches his hands during the gravity blasts to preserve his energy but also to enable him more access to the rest of the kit. Now, the live session of "40 roll - Chris Turner" is a must. It is right up your alley. Be well!
Ya a couple of people schooled me on the hand switching and the more I watch the more it makes sense. Also that Chris turner thing I saw a while back, Chris is so heavy, top tier drummer for sure.
That switching thing, I'm sure there's some showing off in it as well, but what he says in a video here on YT is that he does it because when there are longer such parts, just doing it with one hand, that one hand can get too spazzy from the strain and then that limits what parts he can do after these parts. He says this switching also allows him to use both sides of the kit, as opposed to doing it with one hand and being only able to reach the opposing side of the kit.
Couple of crazy drummers to check out: Elliot Hoffman of Car Bomb, Jamie St. Merat of Ulcerate, and Lille Gruber from Defeated Sanity. They're all jazzy in different ways.
when he's "showing off and switching hands" that's actually a technique that allows you to get a snare hit on EVERY 16th note, and it can be sustained for longer periods of time than gravity blasts. its called a "switch blast" i think
I'm not a drummer but I'm pretty sure the technique he's using where he's switching hands during the blast beat is called the dirk blast. Dirk Verbeuren, the guy who invented it, has a video that explains how it works.
Matt Gartska, Alex Rüdinger, Hannes Grossman, Chris Turner, Francesco Paoli, Matt Greiner, Ali Richardson. Only ones I can think of. All very talented drummers.
Cattle Decapitation - Dead Set on Suicide Drum Cover by David Diepold May not be the original drummer, David McGraw, but it's so tight, it's insane. This video blew my mind and I showed it to so many people. I discovered Cattle Decapitation by searching for the fastest double bass drums in Technical Death Metal back around 2013 and I discovered Archspire with Lucid Collective not long afterward, which became my favorite Tech Death band and is, in my opinion, the best Metal band in the world. Nothing compares to Archspire. Lucid Collective sure is a masterpiece but they went even more technical and fast with Relentless Mutation and the eponym song is a masterpiece in itself. As I say, while Cattle got the heaviness, Archspire got the aggressivity and speed.
@@yarpyarp85 Awesome! While looking back for it, I've found out that El Estepario made a video about said cover 6 months ago and even he thinks it's mind blowing. I think it says a lot! Haha! @@yarpyarp85 He said in an interview that his breaths are timed for each song and have to happen at the same moment as intended, otherwise he runs the danger of gassing out before the end of the song and might not be able to play it through properly. Now that's crazy, if you ask me. Spenser is an athlete, as far as I'm concerned. It sucks that he left Archspire.
Great video! Just a note though, that blast beat he's doing where he's switching hands, its definitely not him showing off. Its called a Dirk blast, named after Dirk Verbeuren (now of Megadeth) and is based on the flam tap rudiment (or is at least heavily inspired by it). He's switching hands to be able to play the right accents at those high speeds and to keep time easier, as it would be incredibly difficult to make those accents at that speed without switching hands like that. Dirk has a great video here on youtube explaining it perfectly that is pretty popular in the blast beaten genre side of metal, called 'The "Dirk Blast" by Dirk Verbeuren'
Hey Matt greetings from Argentina! Been following your metal progress since your Slayer video! Glad to see your channel slowly growing! P.S. watching you try the blast beats and stuff you see is more entertaining than just the reaction.
I'm sure its possible to actually ask the drummer this, but as someone who plays drums at these faster speeds, I dont think hes switching which hand he blasts with as a "show off" thing, its more likely a thing to save a single wrist from moving so much at these high speeds. Like I said, ask the drummer who played it though, not me...

Anything by John Longstreth, dude. Him & Chason Westmoreland. The latter is, I believe, a jazzy fella too. Fast as fuck and awesomely cool.
Thanks so much my friend. I’ll definitely check them out. Love to hear about these jazz influenced metal guys. I’m definitely gonna do Sean Rienhart from death soon.
That "back and forth" is the Dirk blast. Named after Dirk. He kinda plays for megadeth and shit. Because knowledge is power.
Yo thanks yup I’ve been getting schooled about it by a bunch of people. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks dude. His(Spencer) gravity blast beat is the best 🔥
I'm 4 months late but the drummer just left the band this last week....going to be hard to replace him.
Omg yes near impossible
Good news the are just starting a tour May 31 2024. The Everything is F@cked tour with Aborted, Carcosa, and Alluvial.
Oh damn, might have to make it out for that. It would be unreal to see this live!
Darkside from mgla look up exercises in futility part 5 live drum kit view
Ok sick I’m gonna check it out.
@@yarpyarp85 sweeeeeet
You have to check lord marco on his sonivinos playthrough incomprehensibly evolved.... You will be mind blown
Ok thanks my friend if he’s a Lord he must be insane!
I don't care what anyone says , this man has to be the Greatest drummer on the planet .
Blastbeat switching hands from its creator himself: th-cam.com/users/shortsCgzp5MyX-Sg
Holy crap that was awesome!
Seems like a slightly different technique
do travis orbin - unleash the pwnies
its a rite of passage as a drum reacter
Thank u I’ll check him out!
Switch hands isn’t showing off, you pretty much have to at that speed and higher.
Ya totally dude I’ve been schooled also, I tried to mess with it and realized it’s impossible if u don’t lol. 🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@yarpyarp85 yeah its all good man, i dont expect a jazz drummer to know techniques that are really only used for extreme speed lol
Love it
React to John stainer( formerly helmet) from tomahawk
Dude thanks for the recommendation I’ll add him to the list!
I'm a fan forever and ever, like a forever spinning fidget spinner 🤘 A suggestion as well! Nick Thurl Mavromatis' new song is on a whole other level. You should react to his new song! 🔥
Like forever ever ever?! Haha thank so much my friend and I’ll check it out for sure!!
I don’t think that’s showing off. It’s an endurance technique so you don’t have to hold that blast with one hand.
Ya totally people have been correcting me. Definitely starting to understand just how physically taxing this style is. 💪💪💪
@@yarpyarp85 check out Eugene Ryabchenko from Fleshgod Apocalypse. The Violation, Egoism, or Thru Our Scars would all be good choices. They’re on his TH-cam page.
Please react to Sleep token. ii is a goddamn masterclass it’s mesmerizing
Ok I will for sure, I put it on the list. Thanks! 🤘🤘
Nile the inevitable degradation of flash is a good song I couldn’t find a video of the original drummer playing it but there’s a guy named David Diepold that does it and you should definitely do a reaction to that one! Subscribed!!
Best poster in the back, The Lonio Usmonk
Dude yesss probably the only person that watches these that would recognize the great Thelonious Monk. 🙏🙏🙏🙏✊
need some Austin Archey drum playthroughs of his band Lorna Shore
well worth a watch
Oh ya I did a reaction a while back. Blew my mind.
@@yarpyarp85 cool! off to go watch that!
They kill it live. Always on point. They embody the concept of Tech Death as good as or better than anyone.
I'd only put First Fragment above them. Necrophagist is right there but the two aformentioned have progressed beyond the master.
Aborteeeeddddd, anything from themmm
Eehhh yo I did one but I don’t think it was the best song. What one do I suggest??
@@yarpyarp85 you should listen to their song Shape of hate, the whole albums great but thats the song id recommend
Actually he's not showing off by switching hands with the gravity blasts. He does that to spread it out to both hands.
Ya I was kinda joking but some people schooled me already. Raman’s for watching though!
@@yarpyarp85so one hand doesn’t get tired over the other…
Infant Annihilator - Ov Sanctuary and sincest or Cnt Crusher drum playthrough. Aaron Kitcher is a monster on drums.
Yes dude I’ve heard of this one. Supposed to crazy right! I put it in the list 💪💪🤘
Saw them live last year. Amazing. Stabwound necrophagist
That’s awesome!
i also chief the skrong when listening to Archspire
Try some of Sean Reinert's stuff (from Death and Cynic). One of metal's most elite and groundbreaking drummers; also probably one of the "jazziest" as well if not the most 😁😁
Ya totally I’ve checked him out back in the day cuz other jazz guys were saying he was basically a jazz drummer. I’ll check out more soon and do a reaction for sure.
Yes play bleed
I’m gonna but it’s going to take some time lolol.
@@yarpyarp85 just take plenty of pen rips and it'll be fine 😂
Those shoes are so death metal
I know right! Only thing more metal is Gene Goglan in the combat boots!
Those shoes were brand new before he started the song
React to Dave turncrantz of Russian circles
Wow that’s definitely a name i haven’t heard of thanks for the recommendation. 💪💪
Are you gonna react to more archspire!?
I should right! Probably do one this week. 🤘🤘💪💪
@@yarpyarp85 if you do, please do one from the newest album, perjaps maybe drone corpse aviator ! ;)
john longstreth - saligia obviously
🤜🤛💪💪♥️
Hahahah ur reaction is so cute
TH-cam premium is totally worth it.
I recommend you watching Eugene Ryabchenko's drum cover of the song The Betrayal from Fleshgod Apocalypse. Or actually any other drum cover from that guy, he's insane from my opinion. Great video btw !
Thanks so much! I just did a reaction to him and I’m gonna release it soon! 🥁🥁💪🥁💪 he’s insane!
Try meshuggah - clockworks or bleed
I'm so used to jazz musicians being super dismissive of metal, even though they do similar things. Time changes, key changes, and just super virtuoso difficult stuff.
Anyway, long way of saying thanks for being both open and not a jerk. Cheers
Hahaha ya I’ve definitely come across the jazz snobs. I’m not one my friend, if anything I might be converting to the dark side. 😈👻👻👻🙀🙀
