@@yarpyarp85Definitely have to second you checking out Darkside playing Exercises in Futility V from the Drummers from Hell PL TH-cam channel. It's a great, pro shot drum cam video of Mgla playing their entire set live, but they have it nicely divided up into individual songs on their TH-cam page for consumption.
I recommended him along with Spencer Prewett and Jon Longstreth when I first found your channel.
Darkside has a very unique approach to black metal drumming; most people familiar with the man claim his unique style is from his classical xylophone and percussion training. His cymbal work really, really shines.

He told me years ago (Destroyers of All-era) that he does trigger the bass drums, but blends the triggers 50/50 with the natural mic sound, and uses samples recorded from his own kit. He mentioned something similar in an interview in the last few years too, IIRC, but he might've dropped them since then.
Man clearly doesn't need them though, just look at the range of motion on those beaters. And you can tell on the albums that the rest of the kit is always 100% organic.

According to Sam bean from the band werewolves on the into the necrosphere podcast this conversation happened on a recent tour, Sam "so Jamie how do you remember all those technical bits for your show" Jamie "I improvise" Sam "you're joking right?" Jamie "no serious, I have a idea what should happen between the two points of a song but it's my responsibility to work out how to get there" Sam "WTF".

@@yarpyarp85 Sam's follow up point is telling "Death metal is the one genre where improvisation doesn't happen, and he's the guy who's doing it". He was then talking about the contrast between his own band where they are having to rehearse and make sure everything is locked in with no room for any movement from what has been composed, as opposed to ulcerate where those guys chase a song for years and also rehearse possible variations in playing the song.

The best thing about this band is that they were/are so underrated, and they just kept going, producing better and better albums. Their last album, Cutting the Throat of God, is one of the best albums I have ever listened to.
Maybe their style is not that pure death metal banger and moshpit style, but their grooves and fills work like a wave that touches your soul. Also, the songs are very well written lyrically.
I don't know how he can remember the notes on earth because they are so complex, and every single note makes sense.
    It's an impressive combination.

That is so well said my friend. Out of all the things I’ve checked out on this little journey I’m on, they stand out the most. It’s such a sophisticated way of approaching death metal. Maybe that’s why they arnt as well known. But as more and more pure musicians start transitioning to metal or at least as the standards continue to rise in the style (musically not physically) they will get recognition, hopefully. Until then I feel like I’m in a little club now. I’m a fan for life of Jamie. 🤘🤘🤘☺️☺️

      @@yarpyarp85 Thanks for the reply,
You need to listen to the whole album and the lyrics of Facing Death and Stay Still, and then jump into the new album coz it's like an upgraded version of the previous one.
Regarding my experience, I saw the band for the first time in 2011 while they were opening for Nile. There were literally no more than 30 people at the venue, and nobody knew who those guys were, but they nailed the show in all aspects.
Later, in 2021, I saw them opening for Mgla, and they put on an impressive show. From that time, I became a big fan of them.
It's also worth mentioning the difficulty of keeping up the rhythm of being from NZ while touring Europe and the rest of the world due to logistic expenses.
Next November, I'm attending their concert in Barcelona, and they are the headliners for the first time. I'm so excited that I finally can play a full set of their music and get the deserved attention.
It's a unique band that needs more attention; you covered them very well.

If You want to melt your mind, You should definitely check out Elliot Hoffman from *Car Bomb,* one of the most unique current metal acts out there (I mean, both Gojira and Meshuggah have expressed the same position, and the former are really close with CB and have helped them reach a wider audience).
My 2 suggestions would be "The Sentinel" and "Antipatterns", and if that tickles your fancy, "Hellfest 22 drumcam" is a real treat as well, but honestly You cant go wrong with any of the available choices, as their entire body of work is insane, and I think You might really appreciate their material and his skill as someone with a jazz background.

I was just about to shill for Lord Marco since he's a great friend of mine! 🤌 Either that one or Hunhau Mitnal - creador y formador are the most definitive picks! If he ever does a drum playthrough of Synaptic by MIM tho... This world will collapse immediately 😂
