Evolution of a Jazzdrummer on TH-cam: First Video: WHat?! HUH? Is he using Triggers? WHA? Newest Video: It's like a Dirk-Blast, but 4s instead of 3s. Nice Gravblast m8.
Also the "four blasts" as you call it: he's done some interviews and it actually makes a lot of sense: it is blast beast but since he is going so fast he tried switching his hand each 4 like that since basically it would give his muscles time to relax and thus able to keep the same pace a lot longer than being super tense all of the time if he wasn't switching hands. Kind of like the same principle that George Kollias uses with the swivel feet from side to side: vary the movement a bit so you can push it way faster for longer by giving your muscles a tiny bit of time to recover. So yeah guys like Kollias or Prewett here are getting scientific and shit to push things further and further. Best definition of "extreme metal" by far.
I've honestly always thought he was flamadiddle blasting until i read this comment and had a closer look. It's a similar concept, but somehow more impressive the way Spencer does it
Always thought the swivel foot was to help with counting. Practically, it divides tempo by two. Instead of down, down at #bpm it becomes left-right, left-right at #/2 bpm
Hannes grossmann as well. I believe he is THE BEST at blastbeats. Y'all should watch hannes explain his hybrid technique, it's awesome. The height of his sticks when blasting is unparalleled. And he doesn't use any kind of gravity technique either
I love how when Garrett first started doing these he didn’t know what a gravity blast was. Now he can identify different types of blasts, like the Dirk blast.
Kevin M I was just thinking in my head “why does he switch hands? Why not just stay on the same hand? Is it just for show?” Thanks for the insight brother
@@fullcircle8564 Yeah, it gives your hand muscles that fraction of a fraction of a second to recover between sets of four. It's kind of like how double rolls (not multiple bounce rolls, but open double rolls) are significantly easier to do extremely fast than an extremely fast single roll. Same logic, only it's sets of four instead of sets of two.
I'd totally recommend Ken Bedene from Aborted playing "bit by bit". Dude has SERIOUS speed but his blasts are really controlled and strong at the same time.
hey bud nice to see you safe during these times. Don't be afraid to express yourself more, fuck those dudes who said you talk to much! We love to see you react and I personally have loved this journey in the past year of you learning and seeing more metal and stuff Stay safe and be easy from Miami!
My band and Archspire played a few shows together years ago, all the drummers were blown away by how clean this dude is live! No trigger on the snare just straight practice
Can you react to Vitek (R.I.P), the original drummer of Decapitated? There are some old drumming videos of him on youtube. On their first album, Winds of Creation, he was only 15 and the album is a Technical Death Metal milestone!
You NEED to react to Flo Mounier rehearsing Phobophile Edit: Or you can react to Lille Gruber from Defeated Sanity playing Consumed By Repungance. Lille is a brutal death metal drummer with alot of jazz influences
The switch blast, or "dirk blast in 4", is basically a paradiddle with both hands unison on the 1 and 3; one hand of course then being on a cymbal of choice.
For the 4 blasts, when I play them I use a flam paradiddle instead of four straight notes on one hand. With the accent hand play your cymbal of choice and leave the grace note on the snare and double stroke with the lead hand but match the stroke heights with the left. This lets you play them with alot more power and speed.
I seen these guys in Greensboro a couple years ago, I remember being in a daze watching him, as well as getting a hold on my ribcage tickling from the amount of amplification they used at a small venue.
MIKE IS THE MEAN MACHINE ! Guy have the best tone of all drummers out there. His channel is pure gold. Can't wait to see proper reaction for Mike on this channel. Bleed
These "switch blasts" are based on flam rudiments but the flams are played as flat flams aka unison strokes. Flam tap, flam accent and flam paradiddle are all viable ways to play them. They just have the accents (cymbals) on different places. The Dirk blast is the flam accent variation so the sticking is FLR FRL (F stands for flam) and it has a triplet feel.
I was supposed to see this guys a few days back b4 it got canceled due to all this shit going down right now. Saw them last year and they absolutely killed it. One of the best shows I've ever been to. Had a blast.
I love the fact that @ 2:40 in , as a knowledgeable as you are at drums, you are just as dumbfounded as me who knows nothing about them, but their my favorite!!!!!
Check out Ray Hearnes playthrough of Hakens 1985. Lots of funny time signatures and a part in 7/8,6/8,5/8 all the way to 1/8. Great prog rock/metal band!
@@xedgeforeverx Nah, it isn't. They play this song live all the time and even faster stuff off their newer record. I've seen them live at least half a dozen times over the years, they aren't depending on recording techniques to hit the speeds they do.
I would like to see you react to some great jazz drummers. I havnt really explored the genre. Maybe you could open some eyes and ears and spread the appreciation for the art. Love the channel man, keep at it.
I have seen live Archspire two times and the drummer killed it these two shows, he got all my attention everytime, he's so talented, technical and rapid ! You should react to Witold "Vitek" Kiełtyka (Decapited) he was freaking great drummer and react to Hannes Grossman, he has played with a lot of technical/prog bands like Necrophagist, Obscura, Alkaloid, Blotted Science, Hate Eternal
my husband and I saw Archspire open up for Beyond Creation and Obscura . Spencer Prewett is a force of nature . He has to be the most technically proficient drummer on the planet .
Only a drummer would say " I didn't want to re record it then and there, but wait months later.... so it's fresh in my mind" Lol! Also, I would love to see some reaction videos on stuff that YOU love. Like jazz drummers, and throughout the videos explain why you dig them. A couple recs, Peter Ereskine and Joey Baron.( if ya dig em, dig?)
Speaking of Dirk blast, why haven't you done the man himself, Dirk Verbeuren! He's one of my favourite metal drummers, now with Megadeth, but I love his stuff with Soilwork. He's not as extreme or super technical as many you have done, but I love his playing. th-cam.com/video/PSrmsu7uQYM/w-d-xo.html Soilwork - Long Live the Misanthrope
YES! He really is good... and whatever technicality he may lack in comparison to other drummers featured here, he makes up for with true Style and Feeling. I mean, he could groove in a funk, R&B, or any other heavily "groovy" band as easily as he could blast your face off at a \m/etal show. Definitely should do a feature for him, here, @garrettmillerdrums
So many good drummers still to react to... Hellhammer, Simon Schilling, Nicholas Barker, Richard Christy, Frost, Proscriptor McGovern, Flo Mounier, Steve Flynn, Steve Shelton, Inferno, David Diepold, Dirk Verburen, Pete Sandoval, Tony Laureno, Max Kolsne...
Damn, it's cool that you looked at this, this guy is great, but you should look at something from their newest album because he certainly hasn't slowed down and the production is a lot cleaner.
Just like how this was apparently recorded once and then revisited a few months later for a fresher reaction, apparently I've watched this video before... I remember the comment about "How do you do this? You PRACTICE pfssht." Still fresh doe. 5/5 the second time around for me too.
Ayy I was gonna say to react to some Archspire but didn’t think it would get through so I didn’t bother. They are form my city, met one of their guitarists a few weeks ago.
It's just called "Switch Blast" :) seen a few other drummers do it. You should react to 66Samus doing a playthrough of the song "Hear Me" he recorded for Devin Townsend. He does a bit of Switch Blasting in that
Please check out Chris Turner again, except Hansha or Hikari. Another drummer is Berlin Truman from Kingdom of Giants, probably haven't heard of them as they are small but he is amazing.
look for KEVIN PARADIS, he's a french death/tech death drummer, he play in a lot of band though, one of his most famous video is the one which he plays the song : permitting the noble dead to descend into the underworld: from NILE, nobody, at least, i've seen nobody on youtube been able to play that cursed song

"all these bells man... all you need is a whistle" LMFAO
😂
I'm a huge tech death fan, and a drum teacher since 1994, and there is no more precise, nor intense drummer out there than Spencer. Absolute monster.
Switching hands on those really fast blast beats is to conserve energy and to split the snare load between both hands
Kevin M I was just thinking in my head “why does he switch hands? Why not just stay on the same hand? Is it just for show?” Thanks for the insight brother
That's what she said....

Archspire is one of the most impressive bands I’ve heard everyone is insanely talented.
My first time playing in Canada this dude came in we said hi to him and he goes “I just took acid.” One of the highlights of my career lol
I'd totally recommend Ken Bedene from Aborted playing "bit by bit". Dude has SERIOUS speed but his blasts are really controlled and strong at the same time.
And he doesn't make a single face lmao
I prefer the video of him playing Termination Redux live from Drummers From Hell, but that's just me. Ken is THE MAN.
Oh yes.
Haven't found one, but a drumcam video from "A Whore D'oeuvre Macabre" would probably get quite a reaction lol
He's a complete bastard..jaw dropping

I’ve seen these guys so many times (hometown band/friends). They never cease to amaze.
I envy you so much. My European ass only found them earlier this year, but man did their music just blow my head off. I fkin love them now
Hes not even human 😳
I smile every time I watch your videos. You love this shit so much, it makes me happy
New shirt design idea:
How do you do that?!

Were they nice dudes? Because I know some people that have met their drummer and he was a world class douchebag.
I was one of those who was requesting this since day 1, haha. Glad to finally see your "re-reaction" of it. :D

SLAM POLICE I would kill to hear him react to that drum solo at the end of Consumed. It blows my mind every time.
Yesss been waiting for this one
Finally! I knew you'd love this. I don't really like listening to this album, but I'll watch this video over and over.
2:38 - 2:52 I can't get enough of this when part, especially his right arm!
The switch blast, or "dirk blast in 4", is basically a paradiddle with both hands unison on the 1 and 3; one hand of course then being on a cymbal of choice.

The 4s you mention are what he calls a switch blast. He switches to improve circulation and go longer and faster.
"all you need is a whistle" lol that made me giggle
I saw them live three years ago at a tiny venue. I was 6 feet from slender. It’s even more amazing live. He’s untouchable speed wise
Honestly I hope one day I end up on this channel. Love these videos dude
that moment is near Mike! your videos with Rings of Saturn are pure slaughter, love it. Greeting from Chile 🇨🇱
haha i'll bug him each upload for you

Adam Bjork does a wicked cover of one of their songs which is around 340bpm I think...
man. is a god.... more spencer. every song. is a new mindblowinf experience

I always look forward to your videos, but especially now.
