➡️ Is there a tighter, faster, heavier band than @Archspiremetal? After seeing this, I'm skeptical. Like, I looked away for one second and missed about 500 notes. I was aware of this band for awhile but didn't know the absolute monster player Jared Smith joined this band awhile back. In this video, I take on "Drone Corpse Aviator" from the latest Archspire record "Bleed the Future" and witness an absolute rampage of precision, technicality, and an absolute masterclass on many bass techniques such as two-handed tapping, double-thump, three-finger plucking, and more. I breakdown Jared's bass tapping parts, tips on executing them, his use of the floating-thumb technique, fast plucking, and more. I didn't want this video to end!!! Lastly, his Dingwall 6-string sounds MONSTROUS! 🥵

I would recommend a reaction at a bass playthrough from Eugene of Jinjer (Vortex for example). And I would say Simen Borven from Leprous (I Lose Hope bass playthrough), and Amos Williams from Tesseract (who has also a lot of bass playthrough on youtube)
Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse but whilst playing for Blotted Science (can't find a video of him playing it but check out the track "Synaptic Plasticity"). Some of the playing is similar to what Jared's putting out IMO. Even the playthrough video of Corpses "Frantic Disembowelment" is mental. Jared is amazing though, love Archspire
Archspire is the only band I know where every musician, including the singer, are top-tier technical peak level. AND has a great sense of melody.
And sense of humor. When youre this technical, its easy to get all up your own ass. They dont fall into that trap by acknowledging hiw silly what they do is.

Fun fact about Jared, he didn't even play bass until he auditioned for the band. He was a guitar player, and went to school for music.

I've seen Archspire live a few times, most recently last week in Seattle, and I confirm that they NAIL it live. Beyond belief.

You definitely need to react to Beyond Creation, they play technical death metal. Their first bassist was Forest Lapointe and he has quite some bass walkthroughs for the band. However, now the bassist is Hugo Doyon-Karout and he's doing an extremely awesome job so far. Here are a few songs to listen to:
Omnipresent Perception (Arguably the most well-known song by them, with Forest)
Earthborn Evolution (Forest has a bass walkthrough video but the official video is with Hugo)
Theatrical Delirium (It has a very complicated bass section, played by Hugo in the official video)
Binomial Structures (Instrumental, and my personal favorite out of their last album. It doesn't have an official video)

This is one of those bands that the reactions channels love because no matter if you're a vocal coach, bass coach, guitair or drum coach, there is sooooooo much to delve into with Archspire. G.O.A.T. of Tech Death
About pure insanity:
- Dominic 'Forest’ Lapointe - for me the most insane fretless bass player. He played in Beyond Creation (I recommend this band), then he went to the First Fragment which is even more technical
- Mike Flores - each time I see his right hand technique it blows me away (origin band) - he is hitting up and down string with his finger(s) - easy 16ths in +200bpm
- "InsaneDeathMachine" channel - probably the most technical bassist which I ever found. He makes Rings of Saturns songs even harder - check 'RINGS OF SATURN - "Shards Of Scorched Flesh" on bass'
- Scott Plummer - [*] he played in Viraemia band (not my style, too extreme) on 10-string bass. One big shred + tapping guy
- Linus Klausenitzer - I'm sure you know him from Obscura
There are some technical bands like Brain Drill, Nile, Cryptopsy, Dying Fetus, The faceless, Necrophagist, Cannibal Corpse. I respect the music, but I'm not a fan of these bands
Honourable mention
- CannibalisticZombie - thanks to his covers I discovered technical death metal scene. He made tons of technical death metal covers.
I also like Bryan Beller - I recommend to check the virtual (made for animation) death metal band "dethklok" for fun and enjoyment (pretty good music) and his second project "The Aristocrats" - jazz-fusion (?) with Guthrie Govan and Marco Minnemann each of these musicians is incredibly good
I love Jared Smith and Archspire.
From what I've gathered from their tab book is that most of the fast parts are in triplets or sextuplets so it's easier with the 3 finger technique.
Thanks Roy! This makes sense, and I threw it out there in my commentary because I suspected as much. Fast camera cuts made it harder to tell on some parts, but this would surely lend itself to 3-note groupings. I love when a fast passage is in 3's, ha!
I think it's tough to top Archspire in terms of speed, complexity, and beautiful compositions. Sure there's faster but it starts to feel like too much at a certain point. I think Archspire strikes that perfect balance of insane technical speed with catch rhythms and melodies.
Nah, Origin, Henker, Viraemia and that type of stuff is where it's at, brutal as hell, technical as hell and did such weird stuff. Archspire to me is the stuff that those who don't actually like death metal listens to, but to each their own. They're great musicians but not enough brutal involved.

I love Archspire. They do that thing that a lot of other tech death bands forget which is actually right interesting songs rather than just 4 minutes of wankery.
I love seeing the local boys getting more attention lately, or at least I'm seeing them get more of it at least. This album even won them a Juno award for best heavy metal/hard rock album I believe. For those that don't know, the Juno's are like the Grammy's, but exclusively for Canadian artists and bands. Another major plus about these guys, they are really awesome people to just chill with and talk to. I've had the pleasure of meeting them after some local gigs and they are just really great human beings.
In regards to crazy bass playing, recently watched the band playthrough of Cattle Decapitation's Scourge of the Offspring, and their bassist blew me away. Would love to see you watch and react to Olivier Pinard's crazy style. Also Ryan Martinie, the man behind the br br DENG meme xD Mudvayne's music almost feels like it's built around his basslines. He's also in Soften the Glare, an instrumental group that definitely is focused around him. Obviously any Mudvayne song or Soften the Glare is good, but doing Mudvayne Dig for the meme would be wonderful.
All of archspire's songs are short, even at though their albums are 30 minutes there's enough notes for 2 full 1 hour albums, and the vocalist has like 3000 words to remember in a 30 minute record haha.
That is definitely accurate, although if you think about it, it's not really as many words as it seems, with Oli using lots of long, tongue-twisting, multi-syllable words like "involuntary" and "doppelganger". The ridiculously high number of complexly arranged syllables Oli seamlessly spits out like a fully automatic shotgun makes it seem like more words are being used.
If you haven't heard of Beyond Creation than you gotta check them out, the base work is always fantastic. It's always a 6 string fretless and it's just *chef's kiss*. Just great stuff, and their first bass player Dominic "Forest" Lapointe has some bass playthroughs. Highly recommended.
saw these guys live with psycroptic in march, an absolute clinic in tech playing from both bands, as a bass player it was a treat.
The thing that is really cool about that dude, is that even with his insane talent, he is really a nice guy to talk to, he will take all his time to talk to you, he's really humble.
This is one of my favourite songs, I never really realized until now how well written this was.
Jared and archspire are awesome. watching his videos made me start working on the three finger technique. not great at it, but working on it...

I've seen them live twice and they are just AMAZING live, my favorite death metal band right now.
You should definitely watch Jared's playthrough for Relentless Mutation - he really showcases his ability to write music to the song's parts, rather than writing doing crazy shit just cos he can.
I also met him at their show in Nottingham, UK - he's so down to earth and chill (I'm sure the rest of the guys are too)

Drain of Incarnation by Archspire also have a bass video and have great parts. Anything from Dominic Forest in Beyond Creation or lately in First Fragment is great stuff
Bleed The Future, which this is off of, is amazing. But my favorite album is still Relentless Mutation. Songs like Involuntary Doppelgänger, Remote Tumour Seeker, and Human Murmuration, just so good!

I’m sure you have tons of recommendations but one of my favorite bassists is Amos of Tesseract. They’re an extremely talented band that plays with polyrhythms. Even though they’re all talented, they play what’s needed for the song.
If you’re curious I’d recommend the Eden 2.0, dystopia, Juno or King playthrough.

Jared is an amazing player. If you like the tech death bassists you should check out Scott Plummer (RIP) ex bassist of the band Viraemia. Dude was on an entirely different level.

two you should DEFINITELY check out, though finding great videos like this one of Jared will be difficult:
1) Mike Flores of Origin, arguably the "originator" of this kind of superfast and technical death metal. i think it's faster more often, particularly on earlier albums, but arguably less varied and definitely less melodic
2) Jacob Schmidt of Defeated Sanity. basically death metal jazz. or jazz death metal. not as fast (on average) and definitely not melodic [other than "part 2" of their 2-parter album from 2016, which is a tribute to the jazzy tech death from the early 90ies], but the the complexity is mind melting. probably THE most underappreciated bassist (and likewise Lille, the even more insane drummer) in all of metal
edit: hah! there's actually a great playthrough video of Propelled Into Sacrilege on Willowtip's channel, and a good Stoned then Defiled on Jacob's own channel

This is the first vid of yours I've seen. I saw you have a video from 1 year ago on sweeping on bass, so my recommendation for next bass player video to watch would be from the band Born of Osiris. The song Machine has some sweeping arpeggios.. If you want to get crazy, check out some songs by the band Rings of Saturn, it's just very hard to hear the bass on their songs without watching a cover or playthrough.
I know you have checked out Dominic forest lapointe, but you should see him play beyond creation omnipresent perception! It is an incredible bass line!!
