I'd LOVE to see you play A Dark Horizontal or Human Murmuration. Especially Human Murmuration, the part where you go into a ride/snare blast with the guitars tapping away is great :)

Spenser if a fucking athlete! It really stuck with me what he said in some interview: he said that the songs are so intense that his breaths are all calculated (there are exact places when he needs to inhale and when he needs to exhale) and if he messes up and just one inhale or exhale is at the wrong place, he might not be able to complete the song as intended, because he runs out of stamina because of lack of oxygen. Now that's pushing drumming to the very extreme! Also live he has a very commanding presence behind the drums. He looks like he could take out the entire crowd by himself, haha. Overall big respect, great musician!
from what i understand a gravity blast is like a double stroke, using the rim as a fulcrum point. you get one hit on the way down, and when your hand comes up, the stick pivots around the lip of the rim for the 2nd hit.

According to a video Spencer Prewett put out, he does the "crossing over" so blood can flow back into the hi-hat arm/hand and keep him from tiring out as quickly. It's a single hit on the hi-hat and a 4 stroke roll on the snare and he alternates what hand is doing what. He calls it a "switch blast"
A thought on the kick beaters being close to the head: they'll be using triggers as opposed to mics to record to bass drum sounds. Once you get to a certain speed you just can't get the power behind each hit for it to be at a consistent volume compared to slower points in the song so instead of micing up the kicks they feed the notes in through a sensor connected to an electric drum brain instead, it's still note-for-note but not the organic sound of the drum. That's why they're stuffed chock-full of padding as well; to try keep the original sound from picking up on other mics in the mix. The beaters are so far forward because if you don't have to worry about delivering with power at all you might as well adjust totally for speed.

I saw these blokes when they came to Melbourne in 2018. Its honestly one of the most eyepopping shows off musicianship I have ever seen. These guys just did a phenomenal job
He has tutorial videos on his techniques, why he switches hands on blasts to save stamina. Metal drummers use "triggers" on the kick pedals, weights on the heads so smaller strokes are louder, yet this makes it so you need to be more precise, since each kick becomes way more noticeable

I just recommended the same Ne O song, haha! Dan Presland is a damn machine. May not be the fastest or most brutal, but his style is super unique and his coordination between all 4 limbs is next level. His feet also go for days... My band opened for them 4 times now, and I got to watch him play from the side of the stage and damn. My feet and legs hurt just watching him.
The Clint Commander that's awesome! Yeah his stamina is insane. Seeing the Night Verses reaction would be cool too, Aric Improta is probably the most innovative drummer out there right now
When he moves his feet back he is basically doing his version of a heel-toe. He's getting double strokes..... And yes switch hand blast beats are not easy, at least for me! Badass drummer!!

Concerning the gravity blasts: I practiced them at school with pens on the edge of school books. Once you get the feeling for the tipping motion right, the adaptation to the kit is trivial. The limiting factor concerning speed is obviously how fast you can move your hand, i.e., moeller with the respective hand. Therefore, I did not especially train the gravity blast for faster tempos. Instead, the tempo of my gravity blasts is essentially the same as the tempo at which I can do the Moeller technique. I have no better explanation; hope this helps. Great content, keep it up. Cheers!

I used to share a jam space with this band. He runs triggers on the kicks. But he would legit practice like 3 hours a day god knows how many times a week. I'd be there 4 times a week and he was almost always there when I was. He treated it like a job. He wouldn't just show up to band practice, he'd put in hours on his own.
Spencer is actually a very intelligent and creative super athlete who’s into drums. :) Riccardo Merlini talks all about muscle twitch in his course. Fascinating how far you can develop yourself hey. Johnny Rabb has great creative use of the freehand technique too.
The thing that really impresses me about extreme metal drumming is how efficient their movements are. It's hypnotic. To play THAT many notes at those speeds for any length of time, you can't waste a single millisecond or ounce of effort moving from one note to the next or between parts of the kit. And they employ so much physics to pull it off, like the rim fulcrum gravity blast and sliding back on the pedals. All to push the limits of human precision. I think this would be better understood if there were more drum cams/play-throughs.

The gravity blast uses the rim of the snare to act as the pivot point. It starts with sort of a rim shot, uses the rim to catch the stick, and follows up with a stroke again. I modify my grip a bit when I do them and let the rim act as the fulcrum. It didn't take me more than a couple of weeks or so to learn it with my right hand, but I've had more trouble with my left. I think it's because I use möller for my right hand and fingers for my left hand. I use my wrists a lot less with my left.
Crazy stuff, my man. I saw Archspire back in whenever when they toured with Fleshgod Apocalypse. Knew nothing about them but needless to say, they nailed it. The entire venue (small as it was - everything is small in Denmark compared to other countries) was in awe. Chill dudes, too, spoke to Dean Lamb outside the venue afterwards while we were trying to pick ourselves up. Many a jaw saw the floor that night. Imagine how difficult it is to replicate such technical music live. Crazy shit, man.

2:35 As someone with a pretty good gravity blast, most of the difficulty comes from getting the very basics down, as once you do you can gravity blast about as fast as your single stroke using a very similar technique, so once you understamd how to gravity blast you don't have to dedicate much time to it specifically.

Once you get the feel for gravity blast it's very easy. The trick is you hit the head and the rim at the same time which lifts the stick and gives a hit on moving your hand up so you get 2 hits per stroke. It's more of a "hand shaking" motion. I bet if you tried it you'd have it in an hour tops.

Fyi- that crossover alternating hand 4note blast bursts move he does is known as the "Dirk Blast," as it was developed by drummer Dirk Verbeuren. Spencer just takes it to an absurd level and Archspire is one of the most relentlessly punishing tech death bands!!

As far as gravity blasts. They're not super difficult to pick up, more time is dedicated to making them consistent. Essentially you position the drumstick so that as your hand moves downward the tip strikes the drumhead (DOWNSTROKE 1). However, instead of moving your hand back up, you continue to bring the stick down so the that stick pivots on the lip of the drum ( bringing the tip up again: UPSTROKE 1). Then you bring your hand back up and the stick reverses its pivot and strikes the drum again (DOWNSTROKE 2). You continue to raise your hand pulling the stick completely off the drum (UPSTROKE 2). Repeat and refine until you have a relatively small and consistent movement, making an even double-stroke, single-hand roll. I basically learned with a pencil on the edge of a desk. Drums are even easier since the head is springy.
yep bouncing off the rim shortening the travel distance for a faster roll same as the double peddle Technique, that,s why on faster sections his foot is further back
You should check out a drummer called Lille Grueber from a band called defeated sanity if you haven’t. He has a completely different style of drumming for death metal. I think the cat is a jazz instructor/composer. You would dig it.
Christ alive this is intense. I wish it was recorded a little clearer, but that would probably defeat the point I guess. Seeing those really quick gravity blasts instead of a whole section of it is pretty impressive.
Regarding how close his kick batters are to the heads, he uses electronic triggers on the bass drums, so he doesn't have to hit them hard. This is the norm in death metal drumming.
Once you get the technique down for gravity blasts personally I don't think it requires too much practice for upkeep.... but then again I can't blast like Spencer Prewett so maybe that's where I'm going wrong
I've just stumbled on these vids but to answer the question regarding left handed gravity blast, I haven't commonly seen it other than this guy, I can do it as well but that is because I am primarily left handed I can switch my hands during blast beats with no issue, I have my kit set up in a right handed set up, so that I can be as technical as possible all around
For me. Ive spent 2 years on just the push pull technique. 789 hours per hand so far. The gravity blast is much easier to me. It definitely takes dedication!
I think the very fast bass drum part is played like the mühle roll on the snare, 2 beats each, alternately left and right, like a mühle roll on the snare rr,ll,rr,ll ..etc..isn't it ?
I don't know anything about equipment or how shows are setup but, when you mentioned "in person".. I saw these guys a few years ago and of the dozens and dozens of bands ive watched live, the thing I remember most about archspire was it seemed the impact/setup/amplification kicked you in the chest with a size 17 foot at the entry door to the venue.
Gravity Blast is kinda like the heal toe for double bass strokes except it’s rim head. I started practicing it in 2021 and still not 100% happy with it. 😂

I saw Archspire in concert . Not only can he do everything live , he did it on Beyond Creation's drumkit! Astounding.

What most metal drummers do in order to play loud without having a huge stick angle is just using heavy sticks. Helps with the rebound too

Yep, just open your hand, let the thumb and forefinger act as a hinge and rock your hand a bit. It's actually the easiest of the blasts to play.

Lol you're correct, Prewitt is distinctly inhuman! Can't get enough of his stuff. Fyi- that crossover alternating hand 4note blast bursts move he does is known as the "Dirk Blast," as it was developed by drummer Dirk Verbeuren. Spencer just takes it to an absurd level and Archspire is one of the most relentlessly punishing tech death bands!!

As far as gravity blasts. They're not super difficult to pick up, more time is dedicated to making them consistent. Essentially you position the drumstick so that as your hand moves downward the tip strikes the drumhead (DOWNSTROKE 1). However, instead of moving your hand back up, you continue to bring the stick down so the that stick pivots on the lip of the drum ( bringing the tip up again: UPSTROKE 1). Then you bring your hand back up and the stick reverses its pivot and strikes the drum again (DOWNSTROKE 2). You continue to raise your hand pulling the stick completely off the drum (UPSTROKE 2). Repeat and refine until you have a relatively small and consistent movement, making an even double-stroke, single-hand roll. I basically learned with a pencil on the edge of a desk. Drums are even easier since the head is springy.

yep bouncing off the rim shortening the travel distance for a faster roll same as the double peddle Technique, that,s why on faster sections his foot is further back

You use the rim as a fulcrum point for a gravity blast....gotta get the re bound just right

You should check out a drummer called Lille Grueber from a band called defeated sanity if you haven’t. He has a completely different style of drumming for death metal. I think the cat is a jazz instructor/composer. You would dig it.

Regarding how close his kick batters are to the heads, he uses electronic triggers on the bass drums, so he doesn't have to hit them hard. This is the norm in death metal drumming.

At those speeds, you almost HAVE to use triggers or else it becomes a hum instead of individual notes.
Once you get the technique down for gravity blasts personally I don't think it requires too much practice for upkeep.... but then again I can't blast like Spencer Prewett so maybe that's where I'm going wrong
I've just stumbled on these vids but to answer the question regarding left handed gravity blast, I haven't commonly seen it other than this guy, I can do it as well but that is because I am primarily left handed I can switch my hands during blast beats with no issue, I have my kit set up in a right handed set up, so that I can be as technical as possible all around
He's probably left handed as well and that's probably why he can switch his hands fast

For me. Ive spent 2 years on just the push pull technique. 789 hours per hand so far. The gravity blast is much easier to me. It definitely takes dedication!

I don't know anything about equipment or how shows are setup but, when you mentioned "in person".. I saw these guys a few years ago and of the dozens and dozens of bands ive watched live, the thing I remember most about archspire was it seemed the impact/setup/amplification kicked you in the chest with a size 17 foot at the entry door to the venue.
For me the gravity blast or "freehand" blast isn't something I've practiced much. But I've got it down well enough to use it in songwriting.

Gravity Blast is kinda like the heal toe for double bass strokes except it’s rim head. I started practicing it in 2021 and still not 100% happy with it. 😂
