Agreed, all three were way above average on their instruments, and they were/are all excellent singers. Emmett wouldn't have had an FX on his voice other than maybe a teeny bit of reverb. As for the positivity, I believe that was a credo of the band's. They wanted to show that rock could be really cool while still delivering a positive, supporting life-affirming messages. That meant use less time to record and that also meant rely on computer software to make the corrections. Rock music (overall musicians) in turn sought to become more mature, sophisticated both in lyric and musicality, harmony, scales, structures - far more experimental musically.
I can't tell you what an impact Triumph had on my life, giving me endless amounts of joy over the years. They are without a doubt my favorite band. The guys are all talented, but the guitarist Rik Emmett, who is also one of the two singers is, without question, a once in a generation talent. Rik is a guitar savant who can play any style at virtuoso levels, with a God given voice to boot. Also one of the best live rock shows I've ever seen.
One of the best songs of that genre/era. It's sort of an anthem really. So underrated as a player and singer is Rik Emmett. He's a better singer than Geddy Lee, and just as good if not better guitar player as Alex Lifeson. And Lex is right about Rush + Zeppelin.
The best one being Trooper, right? ;-) We do have a few contenders though - Rush is probably the one you're thinking of but there are a lot who would give the nod to Guess Who, BTO, or the Tragically Hip. A few might even cast a vote for April Wine.
Well said Keith. There's a Massive amount of talent in the bands you mentioned. Just a matter of age and musical preference, I guess. They're all great!!!
My second favorite group ever. This band just kills it! Their lyrics are beautiful. And Rik Emmitt is the best guitarist ever. He has a PhD with the guitar! Let that sink in! A doctor of the guitar! He has a great voice. He is so humble. I have total respect for him and the band. And that is riks voice. No dubbing or autotune
This song is part of what I call my musical Bible, it is one of many that helped reinforce my traditional upbringing and kept me grounded through years of challenges!
Any song that can help keep you grounded I'm all in for. They've always had a very positive message. Thank you very much for listening to a Canadian band !.
I love watching Lex's face when she hears a great crunchy guitar lick...and her commentary is so prescient, so right on with describing the era she feels the song came from...love u guys.
Triumph is my favorite band, but you REALLY need to see them live. That is where they really shine. They have several live videos from the Halifax concert. You should grab those. Start with 'Lay It On The Line'. th-cam.com/video/jkx47Zsyicc/w-d-xo.html
You made me realize how much I miss Triumph! I love that band! I’ve seen them a couple of times in concert, and I must say that Rik Emmett’s voice songs even better live! It’s hard to believe that they can make that much sound come out of three guys, so in that respect, they are like Rush, Lex!
I'm so glad you reviewed this song - such an under-rated band. Rik Emmitt is such an amazing guitarist / vocalist / songwriter. This song was written about someone near him who was battling cancer. That is his natural vocal range - check out the live version if easier "Triumph live at the US festival"
Triumph is one of my favorite bands. They are soooo underappreciated here in the U.S. One of my favorite things about them is how many of their songs have a positive and encouraging message. I recommend "Magic Power", "Follow Your Heart", "Lay It On The Line", "Never Surrender", and "Spellbound".
"Magic Power" is certainly one of the most beautiful and catchy tunes you will ever hear, and I love that their video was from the US Festival, where you could see countless people grooving to and just *loving* their sound.
First time genuinely hearing this song. Its a mix between Rush and Led Zeppelin with mix of Boston energy. Holy crap, she just said Led Zeppelin and Rush mix !!!!!!whaaat!
No effects on the vocals, guys! Rik Emmett was just that amazing. He's also playing lead guitar, and the acoustic guitar. Please do more Triumph!! Lex, you will get your rock on!! Magic Power Hold On Lay it On the Line Never Surrender Allied Forces Rock n Roll Machine and more... ...also really cool acoustic guitar instrumentals.
I love Triumph and this song is the top of my list. Very personal message for me. Rik Emmett is a great vocalist. The drummer is a kick as vocalist as well. To answer Brad's question. The effect you are hearing is called a chorus. The sound is subtly shifted slightly in and out of tune higher and lower to the musical note. It is used on guitars alot. It makes the sound fuller. I am a former pro musician and I am a recording and mixing engineer as well as a a producer. I use it mostly on guitars and background vocals. BTW there was no such thing as autotune in those days. This a song from 1981. They were still recording to tape at that time. Autotune is a product of digital processing. It was first used in the Late 1990's.
"Hold On" should be your next Triumph song. Especially for you too. It's about holding on to your dreams and not letting others get you down or get in your way.
Finally! Triumph is awesome! They are very normal! Rik is a great singer/guitar player. Lay It On the Line is well known, but two of their best songs are Never Surrender and Time Goes By.
Everyone always makes the Rush comparison and their main reason is they're a three piece from Canada. I get and understand the comparison's to Rush and Zeppelin, but a I hear a major Kansas influence. Either way, Triumph is one of the greats.
They were huge. From their first show on, they never once played a show that wasn't sold out. That's incredible. For some reason, they didn't continue to get much airplay after that era, even though Rush did, but they always had a big, loyal following
Lex hit the nail on the head with the date guess. This was from 1981, in the time when pure arena rock was dwindling to just a few remaining supergroups. You can still hear all the glory of 70s rock mixed with some guitar aggression from the growing metal movement.
Love watching Lex's reactions when she gets into something. The music really goes through her. Brad on the other hand - let's just say that music seems to baffle him - no connection to it, especially if he can't relate to the lyrics.
Excellent observation, Lex. Triumph, like Rush, was a Canadian power trio, so it’s likely there was some influence there and virtually EVERY heavy band then (and now) has been influenced by the mighty Led Zeppelin…
This warms my heart. To watch and hear young people experiencing the music of my youth... Go back and read the lyrics. Very empowering. And most of their music is positive. Another 3 man Canadian prog/metal band.
Simply put Triumph is one of the greatest bands that has ever existed and they do not get the recognition that they deserve one of the greatest imports from Canada along with Rush and The Guess Who
Glad you finally did some Triumph. Magic Power is a must, but after the original you need to hear the lead singer Rik Emmett do it acoustic at Live From Daryl's House.
One of my top songs of all time. Great lyrics along with rock! Rik Emmitt!! Incredible! Only wish you guys had done live. Either from US festival or Nova Scotia
Triumph is another great trio from Canada Saw them at the US Festival in 83 great love show. React to more music like magic power you will not be disappointed
Glad you finally got into some of the best music from my highschool days. Rik really sings at that register (back then anyhow). Check out a live performance, you'll see. He sounded that good when I saw them live.
SUCH a great album and band! I had this album and Scorpions Breakout on the same Maxell cassette - saw them open for Journey at the Rose Bowl. #foodfight
A lot of positive messages in Triumph songs about having faith and inner strength to push through life's challenges. They were a very clean living band and all very welled schooled musicians.
Second time a song I recommended got on a poll and actually won. I may be on a roll! 🙂 I'm not hearing what Brad is hearing... maybe it's the way the mix comes through on headphones. That's why I usually don't like listening to music on headphones. If the mix is weird or unbalanced, as many are, headphones can make it worse. I especially hate it unbalanced between channels. I want to hear all the instruments and vocals in both ears at the same time, as nature intended. Some more subtle movement between channels is cool, but not hearing guitars and drums in one ear and vocals in the other, or anything like that. It's just annoying and distracting. It may work better with speakers, especially when not too separated, but not so much with headphones, imo.
One of the best concerts Ive ever seen was Triumph and Ive been to a hell of a lot of concerts in my 57 years. They ROCKED the house in Omni in Atlanta back in the day. Killer light show too. Ill never forget that show!
Thank you for this one. The soundtrack to my early teens. You'll really enjoy Triumph. Another power trio from Canada like RUSH. Love you guys, happy subscriber as always.
The effect on Rik's voice is called "chorus", or a "chorusing effect". It's more commonly used on guitars. It's a sort of swishing effect is the best I can describe it without giving an actual demo, (I'm a guitarist and I use it quite a lot).
Gil Moore is one of my favorite drummers of all time. I love his mix of raw drumming and technicality. Puts me in mind of an old school 70's drummer living out of his van. So, so good.

The guys are all talented, but the guitarist Rik Emmett, who is also one of the two singers is, without question, a once in a generation talent. Rik is a guitar savant who can play any style at virtuoso levels, with a God given voice to boot. Also one of the best live rock shows I've ever seen.
Triumph's "Allied Forces" album is one of rocks greatest. Every track is great. Try Ordinary Man next.
Rik Emmet could hold his own with any of his peers. What a great player. Especially his 12 string Acoustic work.... Impeccable!!!!!!
One of the best songs of that genre/era. It's sort of an anthem really. So underrated as a player and singer is Rik Emmett. He's a better singer than Geddy Lee, and just as good if not better guitar player as Alex Lifeson. And Lex is right about Rush + Zeppelin.
Lay it on the Line, and Magic Power are absolute musts as in Rock n Roll Machine!
Try a live version of Hold On" ... an epic piece that is Triumph to the core, great band.
The 2nd best rock trio to ever come out of Canada. They've written some great tunes. 'Follow Your Heart is a certified 'banger'.
Love watching your reactions…. I never thought I’d get into reaction videos, but I did. You guys keep listening to music and enjoy yourselves 👍🏻🤘🏼
“Never Surrender” Such an unappreciated request . Great song.
There's another Canadian group April Wine April Wine the song is called high roller High Roller by April Wine alright alright go Canada I ride now
Must do Never Surrender next. Thats his voice. Amazing band with a positive message. Another good one is Magic Power.
Killer vocals on that tune! 🤘
I swear Lex is my sister from another mister. She loves all the parts I do in all these 70’s & 80’s bands ! 💯👏👍
Musical Bible. I like it!
Yes! A world of fantasy is a killer song too. Or never surrender. You cant go wrong with these guys.
YES !! 2 very underrated songs my fellow Triumph fan . was lucky enough to see them 3 times , awesome !
@@davidbordonaro1631 saw them 3 times as well. Twice in one week. Dayton Ohio then Cincinnati Ohio.
I love watching Lex's face when she hears a great crunchy guitar lick...and her commentary is so prescient, so right on with describing the era she feels the song came from...love u guys.
Lay it on the Line, is a must from Triumph, awesome tune.
They’re so great in concert 🤘🤪🤘🍄🍻🇺🇸
Triumph is my favorite band, but you REALLY need to see them live. That is where they really shine. They have several live videos from the Halifax concert. You should grab those. Start with 'Lay It On The Line'. th-cam.com/video/jkx47Zsyicc/w-d-xo.html
You made me realize how much I miss Triumph! I love that band! I’ve seen them a couple of times in concert, and I must say that Rik Emmett’s voice songs even better live! It’s hard to believe that they can make that much sound come out of three guys, so in that respect, they are like Rush, Lex!
One of my secret loves is this song. LOOOOOOOVE THIS SONG...such a good message everyone should hear!
The band YES produced a song titled Close To The Edge in 1972 that is still blowing people’s minds today. I DARE you to react to it!
I'm so glad you reviewed this song - such an under-rated band. Rik Emmitt is such an amazing guitarist / vocalist / songwriter. This song was written about someone near him who was battling cancer. That is his natural vocal range - check out the live version if easier "Triumph live at the US festival"
I was there!!! 😎
Brad, you were mesmerized listening to this song, stop trying to not like it! Different is good, butter is good!
People in Buffalo always loved them.!
It’s all in the name “Triumph”, you can get much more positive than that. Cheers from the severely frigid north.
My favorite is Ordinary man
"Lay it on the line", is the next best song from them. This is a three man band from Canada that was very popular late 70's into the early 80's.
"Magic Power" is certainly one of the most beautiful and catchy tunes you will ever hear, and I love that their video was from the US Festival, where you could see countless people grooving to and just *loving* their sound.
Triumph is a very underrated band.
Was there some kind of vocal effect? Lol You guys always crack me up. Just watch them perform live. Insane vocals. Keep em coming 🤘
First time genuinely hearing this song. Its a mix between Rush and Led Zeppelin with mix of Boston energy. Holy crap, she just said Led Zeppelin and Rush mix !!!!!!whaaat!
Magic power magic power that's triumphs alright alright
No effects on the vocals, guys! Rik Emmett was just that amazing. He's also playing lead guitar, and the acoustic guitar.
Please do more Triumph!! Lex, you will get your rock on!!
Magic Power
Hold On
Lay it On the Line
Never Surrender
Allied Forces
Rock n Roll Machine
and more...
...also really cool acoustic guitar instrumentals.
Lex nailed it with the Rush/Zeppelin comparison. Nice going.
So glad you guys are finally reacting to Triumph, they have a whole greatest hits album.
Canada is renowned for power trios - BTO, Rush, Triumph, Platinum blond....
Lex is spot on about influences. I hear it as well. Great message in the song. Fight the good fight.
Cheers to those who requested this. Banger! As others have stated, Rik Emmett was an underrated guitarist.
How about another Canadian--Pat Travers--Snortin' Whiskey!
Everyone always makes the Rush comparison and their main reason is they're a three piece from Canada. I get and understand the comparison's to Rush and Zeppelin, but a I hear a major Kansas influence. Either way, Triumph is one of the greats.
Another one of my favorites from back in the day. These guys should have been Waaay bigger than they were.
They were huge. From their first show on, they never once played a show that wasn't sold out. That's incredible. For some reason, they didn't continue to get much airplay after that era, even though Rush did, but they always had a big, loyal following
@@hmpz36911 I didn't say they weren't huge. I said they should have been waaay bigger than they were.
Lex hit the nail on the head with the date guess. This was from 1981, in the time when pure arena rock was dwindling to just a few remaining supergroups. You can still hear all the glory of 70s rock mixed with some guitar aggression from the growing metal movement.
One great thing about this 3 man band from Canada is they have 2 singers. The other singer is the drummer. FOLLOW YOUR HEART is a great one!!!
These guys were an awesome power trio. Very talented to fill up that much space musically with just 3 guys.
Love watching Lex's reactions when she gets into something. The music really goes through her. Brad on the other hand - let's just say that music seems to baffle him - no connection to it, especially if he can't relate to the lyrics.
That's top shelf high quality rock and roll.
"Lay it on the line"
Brad your killing me. Just let go and rock and roll. Let the music move you.
Rik Emmett- one of the best voices in rock that most are not aware of. Just sayin'.
Excellent observation, Lex. Triumph, like Rush, was a Canadian power trio, so it’s likely there was some influence there and virtually EVERY heavy band then (and now) has been influenced by the mighty Led Zeppelin…
Lay It On the Line and Hold On are my favorites by this “other” trio from Canada. But you can’t go wrong with anything Triumph.
This warms my heart. To watch and hear young people experiencing the music of my youth... Go back and read the lyrics. Very empowering. And most of their music is positive. Another 3 man Canadian prog/metal band.
Magic power
Simply put Triumph is one of the greatest bands that has ever existed and they do not get the recognition that they deserve one of the greatest imports from Canada along with Rush and The Guess Who
Glad you finally did some Triumph. Magic Power is a must, but after the original you need to hear the lead singer Rik Emmett do it acoustic at Live From Daryl's House.
One of my top songs of all time. Great lyrics along with rock! Rik Emmitt!! Incredible! Only wish you guys had done live. Either from US festival or Nova Scotia
Probably my favorite classic rock song, this and "Last Chance" by Shooting Star. Thanks for the reaction.
😊SHOOTING STAR👍
Great song: "Last Chance" - love the tom sound!
hes singing perfectly in key to the song thats why it blends so well
It’s an absolute jam! Not confusing to me.
You really need to see these guys live. They seriously kick some rock and roll ass.
they are BETTER LIVE
Triumph is another great trio from Canada
Saw them at the US Festival in 83 great love show. React to more music like magic power you will not be disappointed
I was there, good times
I was there, too. Helluva day, helluva weekend. 🤘
#foodfight
The positivity in this song is food for the soul!
Keep your magic in your heart!❤️
They have an instrumental called Little Boy Blues that Lex would get off on !
Triumph is an amazing band! Rik Emmett a brilliant guitar player and singer. So many great albums. Check "Magic Power"
FINALLY. Such a powerful message from a very underrated band. And Brad... you missed it ENTIRELY.
Yeah, but Lexi saved the day with the Zep and Rush connection and she definitely felt those lyrics too!
A lot of positive messages in Triumph songs about having faith and inner strength to push through life's challenges. They were a very clean living band and all very welled schooled musicians.
Second time a song I recommended got on a poll and actually won. I may be on a roll! 🙂
I'm not hearing what Brad is hearing... maybe it's the way the mix comes through on headphones.
I like Magic Power best.
Gil Moore is one of my favorite drummers of all time. I love his mix of raw drumming and technicality. Puts me in mind of an old school 70's drummer living out of his van. So, so good.
Another great Canadian band to give a listen to is April Wine
THAT WAS HIS VOICE, NO EFFECTS BEHIND IT. That's how they did alot of there songs. Rick Emmit ,the lead singer has an amazing voice.
