I’m 26 years old, but I kind of grew up around classic rock. I had never been a big Tom Petty fan though. Then I went to Bonnaroo 2018. It was less than a year since his passing, so a group of musicians performing at the festival got together for the “Tom Petty Superjam”. This included Sheryl Crow, Hayley Williams of Paramore, Matt Schultz of Cage the Elephant, and countless more. They played a bunch of Tom Petty songs, and I fell in love with his music. I will admit I was on a bit of LSD that night, but I haven’t enjoyed his music any less since that night. I’ll never forget getting that joint passed to me during “You Don’t Know How It Feels”. R.I.P. Tom Petty. I wish I had loved your music earlier, but I’m glad I love it now
1979 was a great year in Music, Top selling album in the US, were Supertramp - Breakfast In America, followed by Donna Summer Bad Girls. Then we had the Dobie Brother's Minute By Minute, we also had Pat Benatar's debut In The Heat of the Night, and Damn The Torpedoes by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
I was ten or eleven when this album dropped and I spent the next year listening to it nonstop. I got to see them in concert later that year and it changed my life. They were so good.
So many good tom petty songs to react to. Refugee is my 2nd favorite tom petty song next to breakdown. "Runnin' down a dream" "I wont back down" "Dont come around here no more" "The waiting" "You got lucky" "Into the great wide open" "Yer so bad". So many bangers.
That was just his voice. That's how he sounds on all his songs. That's what makes him so cool. He's different and you know it's Tom Petty when you hear him. He has lots of good songs! Do "American Girl" next!
BEST Tom Petty song of all time! I remember when this song was released.. I was just a kid and we all dug it!! Big time! Such a nostalgic tune for me. :) loved your reaction! Lol esp to his voice 😋. RIP Tom Petty🙏🏼
@@davidadams7989 ,I agree. That's why I was surprised when I bought a "best of" CD a few years back without that song included. The song is at the top of my list.
I love the way Tom sings this hard rocking song. One of my favorites from Tom and the Heartbreakers. I think he’s singing about someone who feels beaten down, and he’s saying you don’t have to BE beaten down. “Everybody’s had to fight to be free”.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have some great ones - he has one of those original voices, like a true rock-n-roll voice. I always liked, "Don't Do Me Like That", "Here Comes My Girl" and "The Waiting is the Hardest Part". His songs have been featured in movies like The Silence of the Lambs ("American Girl") and Jerry McGuire ("Free Falling"). Love your reactions!
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers had a 40-year recording career. Plus his solo stuff, his work with Mudcrutch, the Traveling Wilburys, and guest appearances on other people's albums. There's a LOT to choose from, and his musical style is pretty varied. It's a deep rabbit hole. My all-time favourite artist. This song was from their third album, which propelled them to stardom. For something different from this but really great, try something from the other end of his career - like Fault Lines, from their last album.
His lyrics were meant to be taken in whatever way it fit your world......that's the beauty of his gift for song writing. And his voice....the timber of it for me is magical, touches my soul.
Saw that tour. The band Lone Justice opened for them in Tampa and the unannounced addition to the line up was Roger McGuinn from The Birds. He did an acoustic set.

Brad nailed it. It's Tom Petty listen to his words and it will take you on this incredible journey as he makes all theses hit songs there is no bad song in his catalog.
Vocally he was influenced by Bob Dylan and in fact he even opened for Bob Dylan on at least one tour. But no he sings like this on all his stuff and once you get used to it, it's wonderful it is distinctly him and he has this huge catalog of all great songs. There is a local Tom Petty cover band called Heavy Petty and literally they can play for 2 hours and never repeat a song. I was in high school when this dropped and I can distinctly remember the first time I heard it. It was playing on my clock radio when it woke me up out of a deep sleep to start getting ready for school and I was like, oh man, what the hell is this? This is fascinating. The message to me has always been that we all get kicked around some at some point and some people let it get to them and get trapped in a cycle of whether it's drugs or bad behavior or bad relationships or just not doing what they need to do to get off their feet and make forward progress. Everybody has to fight to be free.
Saw him open for Dylan in L.A. Phenomenal artist and band. Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart walked out to help close the concert…Dylan, Petty & the Eurythmics performing all on one stage was incredible! Later, saw Petty as the headliner in San Antonio with Dylan’s son as the opening act (The Wallflowers). 6 degrees of separation.
This song was my introduction to Petty. The way he sings it with such conviction, hooked me. Then again, what did I know, I was just a child in the backseat of my mom's car. This is still my favorite Tom Petty song & I don't think that will ever change. RIP Tom

Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South Florida! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are so unique. They sound like no one else. Tom Petty does have a kind of quirky voice but it fits this band perfectly. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are good for the soul. This is the song that got me into listening to Tom and the Heartbreakers. Still my favorite song of theirs. Great reaction. Other great songs of theirs Mary Janes Last Dance, Good to be King, Listen to her Heart and I Should Have Known It.
This was the first song that I took to my guitar teacher and he wasn't too happy about it because he was a classical player, lol.Tom Petty had so many great song's and hits, hasn't been too long since he passed away and I miss him and his music.🎶🎵
Oh this is such a great song! I love Tom Petty. Back in the 90s I was nearly kicked out of his concert because I had a backpack full of jello shooters! One of the best concerts I’ve ever seen! He always seemed to be just so cool and laid back. I believe with my whole heart that Tom helped welcome Taylor Hawkins into Rock Heaven Friday night. I’ll believe that always. RIP to Tom and Taylor.
Saw Tom Petty several times. His concerts were "themed fun parks". One concert had a huge tree on stage and he was dressed like the Mad Hatter. (Alice in Wonderland)
His first hit song from 1979 and in my opinion, the best song Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers ever wrote and recorded. That's saying a lot, because they had a ton of great albums and songs over 4 decades. Thanks
I remember first hearing him in the 70s but he really blew up in the 80s. In fact, he's one of those artists that I can safely say helped to make the 80s. Some of his videos were also some of the best in the 80s - "Great Wide Open" with Johnny Depp in it! "Running Down a Dream" with that trippy pencil-style animation! "Don't Come Around Here No More" with the Alice in Wonderland theme! MUST - DO - MORE - PETTY! :D
he wrote this kinda as a metaphor....it is about his experience dealing with record labels: Tom Petty said of this song: "This was a reaction to the pressures of the music business. I wound up in a huge row with the record company when ABC Records tried to sell our contract to MCA Records without us knowing about it, despite a clause in our contract that said they didn't have the right to do that. I was so angry with the whole system that I think that had a lot to do with the tone of the Damn the Torpedoes album. I was in this defiant mood. I wasn't so conscious of it then, but I can look back and see what was happening. I find that's true a lot. It takes some time usually before you fully understand what's going on in a song - or maybe what led up to it."
I bought Tom Petty's Greatest Hits maybe in the late nineties. Probably the best CD I've ever had. Because all the songs on it we're good. He's not my favorite artist but he's up there. Too bad that CD did not have "Stop raggin my heart around" where he duetted and wrote it for Stevie Nicks. You got to react to that one. I used to play that song over and over and over
Brad got it right. He's basically saying to the lover that everyone has baggage and history but you don't have to let it define you or your future relationships. No drug references here--he's not subtle when he references drugs in his music :) I didn't understand why it took so long for you to come around to Tom Petty. He was just an amazing all-around artist and songwriter. He produced a big catalog with lots of great songs all the way from the 70's to the 2000's. His unique voice and style (that's very much his real voice but he does enunciate more clearly on some songs) are what put him in a class of his own that crosses genres from straight rock to pop to country to blues. He was also a groundbreaker when it came to videos. MTV came out shortly after he made it big, and he was actually the first artist to do videos that were more than just a mock live performance. The video for "You Got Lucky" was the beginning of a new era. Other great songs (and this is NOT a complete list): Breakdown, A Woman in Love, Here Comes my Girl, Don't Do Me like That, You Got Lucky, American Girl, Mary Jane's Last Dance, You Wreck Me, Jammin' Me, I Won't Back Down (which you've probably heard or at least a cover), You Don't know How It Feels, Don't Come Around Here No More, Running Down a Dream, Free Falling, It's Good to Be King, Something Good Coming
Saw him in concert back in 79-80and my favorite song was"Here Comes My Girl". He was great in concert was slammed against a wooden barrier in the front and couldn't move the entire time.
You get me high, You wreck me, The waiting, Listen to her heart, Room at the top, Have love will travel...his work with The Traveling Wilburys. Literally dozens of songs were hits or should have been, and only a handful of musicians can say that
I grew up listening to Tom. Many of the songs he wrote were love songs. Raw and emotional. I played A Woman in Love, off his Hard promises album for my junior humanities class, and the music teacher clearly had no appreciation for his talent.
Tom Petty is one of those artists that I feel I ought to have got into earlier in my life. I remember being on holiday on the Isle of Skye in Scotland with my Dad and we played the album Full Moon Fever in the car. I thought it was great! Then just a few weeks after getting into Petty's music, news broke about his death and I was heartbroken. He seemed like such a great guy and very dedicated to his fans. He was also in the supergroup (that I also recommend) The Traveling Wilburys, alongside George Harrison from the Beatles, Jeff Lynn from ELO, plus Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. What a lineup!
Brad and Lex if you liked that sound and singing byTom Petty, he has another great and very, very underrated song called ' A woman in love (and it's not me) ' .....
My long-time love for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers can be traced back to this song I remember it like yesterday I was 16 years old pulling up to the arcade when I first heard this song come on the radio and I sat mesmerised at what I was hearing I never heard anything like it before. I can only describe it as a watershed moment

I think this was the song that made me a fan of Tom Petty. Not long after came The Waiting, Woman In Love, and Something Big on the 1981 album Hard Promises.

You are and will continue to be missed for decades.....if not centuries to come... R.I.P..✌
Damn the Torpedoes, great album! Tom Petty was one of the GOAT. Awesome reaction as usual, you two are the best!! ✌️ 🎶🎼🎵🎸
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South Florida! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are so unique. They sound like no one else. Tom Petty does have a kind of quirky voice but it fits this band perfectly. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
The song that made most of Us Tom Petty fans… check out :” Break down” by Him . And … YES! Brad Nailed it!
One of my favorite musicians and my biggest regret not having seen him in stage.
Tom was one of a kind.
Try American Girl or Listen to her heart.
"Free Falling", great song, and he has so many more
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are good for the soul. This is the song that got me into listening to Tom and the Heartbreakers. Still my favorite song of theirs. Great reaction. Other great songs of theirs Mary Janes Last Dance, Good to be King, Listen to her Heart and I Should Have Known It.
Tom Petty is the king of good old fashion Rock and Roll. And Breakdown is short, sweet, and a masterpiece. If you can't groove to Breakdown your dead
I love him so much. Was lucky enough to see him live.
"That's his swag." Brad nailed it. Tom's unique. Also, you got the meaning right, IMHO.
This was the first song that I took to my guitar teacher and he wasn't too happy about it because he was a classical player, lol.Tom Petty had so many great song's and hits, hasn't been too long since he passed away and I miss him and his music.🎶🎵
Running down a dream and Wont back down are MUST petty songs
Oh this is such a great song! I love Tom Petty. Back in the 90s I was nearly kicked out of his concert because I had a backpack full of jello shooters! One of the best concerts I’ve ever seen! He always seemed to be just so cool and laid back. I believe with my whole heart that Tom helped welcome Taylor Hawkins into Rock Heaven Friday night. I’ll believe that always. RIP to Tom and Taylor.
Tom Petty " Won't Back Down", "American Girl" and "You Wreck Me" would be my choices for next up
"It's Good To Be King" absolute Gem from Tom Petty love the solo
This was the song that introduced me to Tom Petty. I've been a huge fan ever since.
"Breakdown" is maybe my favorite Tom Petty song. "Free Falling" is also a must.
Saw Tom Petty several times. His concerts were "themed fun parks". One concert had a huge tree on stage and he was dressed like the Mad Hatter. (Alice in Wonderland)
Damn the torpedos what a great album fucking classic I love it
His first hit song from 1979 and in my opinion, the best song Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers ever wrote and recorded.
There is a record on this album called " even the lovers " in my top 10 favourite records ever...
I used to play that song over and over and over
Keep listening, I'm surprised you didn't catch his southern roots. He's the real OG to a lot of us. RIP❤Tom
Brad got it right. He's basically saying to the lover that everyone has baggage and history but you don't have to let it define you or your future relationships. No drug references here--he's not subtle when he references drugs in his music :)
I didn't understand why it took so long for you to come around to Tom Petty.
I recently watched the live version of Saving Grace and was impressed with how sharp they still sounded at that age.
Saw him in concert back in 79-80and my favorite song was"Here Comes My Girl". He was great in concert was slammed against a wooden barrier in the front and couldn't move the entire time.
Tom Petty is from Gainesville, Florida. Florida strong
You get me high, You wreck me, The waiting, Listen to her heart, Room at the top, Have love will travel...his work with The Traveling Wilburys. Literally dozens of songs were hits or should have been, and only a handful of musicians can say that
Wildflowers is a top 20 album for me. Tom Petty was an incredible poet.
Oh wow! Brad freaking NAILED this one. Great job, Brad. You picked up what he was laying down.
Saw TP a few years ago with Steve Winwood as opening. A great artist and story teller.
Holy crap! Do ever wish I had gone to That concert!
@@SK-lk3iuwatch the greats while you can. I missed out on Pink Floyd amd Van Halen but was lucky enough to see Rolling Stones in Buffalo. The most recent sbow i saw was Tool. Fckn amazing.
Oh and go see Blues Traveler and Joe Bohnamasa.
So many good songs from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. You will enjoy the journey.
I was still a young teenager when he was doing the damn the torpedos in 79, but my older brother Roger went to that concert.
Tom pettys unique voice and great songs, too many to mention, made him one of my favorite artists of all time. This is a great song but my personal favorite is Mary Jane's Last Dance.
For full understanding of Petty's willingness to push the envelope, they really need to see the video for that one.
I recommend Mary Jane's Last Dance
I think this was the song that made me a fan of Tom Petty. Not long after came The Waiting, Woman In Love, and Something Big on the 1981 album Hard Promises.
