  • Best foods to include in your hysterectomy recovery diet for optimising healing and bowel management with Physical Therapist Michelle from www.pelvicexercises.com.au These foods help you recover from abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy and reduce the risk of gas pain, bloating and constipation after hysterectomy.
    Hysterectomy Recovery Diet Timestamps
1:02 Protein sources to promote healing
3:05 Prebiotic foods to restore the gut microbiome
5:01 Foods that cause painful gas and bloating
    6:59 Diet for hysterectomy constipation
    Hysterectomy Recovery Diet for Healing
The body uses protein from the diet for healing. After hysterectomy, protein requirements are increased. The body doesn’t store protein so it’s important to consume protein every day during hysterectomy recovery to optimize tissue healing
Most women require 2.5-3 daily servings of protein during hysterectomy recovery.
1 single serving of lean protein includes:
    2 eggs
1 serve of low fat dairy eg ¾ cup yogurt, 1 cup of milk
65g or 2.2oz cooked lean red meat (e.g. beef, lamb, veal or pork)
100g or 3.5 oz cooked fish or small can tinned fish (tuna or salmon)
80g or 2.8oz lean (skinless) chicken or turkey
    170g or 6oz tofu
    Protein supplement drinks
Hysterectomy Recovery Diet to Restore the Gut Microbiome
Some women develop long-term bowel problems after hysterectomy which may be related to an altered microbiome. The microbiome consists of trillions of bacteria, viruses and fungi (microorganisms) that live in the bowel.
After hysterectomy the stress of surgery (2) and antibiotics can disturb the gut microbiome causing bloating and abdominal pain. Research suggests probiotics after antibiotics may not restore the original microbiome (3).
Prebiotic foods feed beneficial gut bacteria that should be included in the hysterectomy recovery diet:
    Asparagus
    Bananas
    Jerusalem artichoke
    Root vegetables
    Rice
    Yogurt (Greek or homemade yogurt)
    Kombucha or Kefir
Prebiotic foods that can cause gas and bloating include:
    Legumes
    Onions
    Garlic
    Leeks
Diet to Reduce Gas and Bloating After Hysterectomy
Gas pain and bloating is a painful side effect after hysterectomy. If you’re suffering from gas and bloating then you may choose to temporarily reduce or eliminate gas producing foods including:
Brassica family vegetables e.g. cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower
    Peas and beans
    Onions
    Pears
Dried fruits e.g. figs, pears, apricots and prunes
    Gas producing fluids include:
    Caffeine
    Soft drinks
    Beer
    Hysterectomy Recovery Diet for Constipation
Constipation is a common problem after hysterectomy.
The first step for overcoming constipation after hysterectomy is to soften the stool. Having a soft, well formed stool makes bowel emptying less painful and reduces the need to strain.
Hysterectomy recovery diet to soften the stool:
Fruit - peaches, plums, kiwi fruit, apricots
Vegetables - squash, capsicum, spinach, leafy greens
Cereals - oats, wholemeal bread, multigrain cereals
Fibre supplements - psyllium* husks (Metamucil)
    Hysterectomy Constipation and High Fibre
Avoid the mistake of increasing high fibre intake when constipated after a hysterectomy which can worsen constipation.
When constipated reduce fibre and clear the bowel with appropriate laxatives advised by your doctor. This is usually an osmotic laxative (eg Miralax, Osmolax, Movicol) that act gently on the bowel and can usually be taken for at least 6 weeks post op.
Gradually reintroduce higher fibre foods as tolerated after bowel emptying into your hysterectomy recovery diet.

I had my hysterectomy on September 26 and 10 days post I had no appetite and was basically surviving on biscuits and porridge. However after all those days I kept feeling less of myself and always tired, as there had been nights I had not slept a wink. I know I had to do something about this as I should have been feeling better daily but it was not happening. I came across this video on Friday October 07 and started the meal plan as stated. That first night I slept the entire night and today Sunday October 09 I have more energy, walking much better with less pain on the incision and have drastically improved within 2-3 days. A million kudos goes out to you because I really felt like life was over for me but you brought me back to life. Honestly your gynecologist fails to address these follow up instructions which is just as important as the surgery itself. Thanks for bringing my life back into perspective! Your breathing and pelvic exercise videos are also helpful.Keep up the great work! 👍

Each woman’s body is different so what works for some may not work for others. 🙂I’m optimistic & positive w zero nervousness or fear!
I had no options because I’m 54 with normal periods w no sign of menopause any time soon.
But I have two huge fibroids that’s caused heavy bleeding but never any pain whatsoever.
my ovaries will be preserved but here’s the thing, I was already having night sweats & hot flashes waaay before the surgery. I’ve managed it very well with herbal supplements but if I go without the supplements for more than 3 days I start feeling the symptoms.
to be honest my hormones are just all out of wack! lol
I’d live with the fibroids if they were small & didn’t cause flooding but I just can’t live like this anymore, plus they’ve enlarged the uterus as well so I need my body back, sick of looking pregnant

I'm lactose intolerant and was getting B12 injections monthly before surgery. I don't eat red meat. 🤷‍♀️I get up and walk around the house, and my body has been absorbing all the gas and my stomach swelling has gone almost completely back to normal. Spices seem to help with pain and constipation, but I wonder if it makes bloating worse. Love yoghurt and milk, but could not eat/drink I it without causing more bloating in the first 2 weeks.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@Val P. yes and yes Val, spices can help with bowel motility however they are also potential causes of gas and bloating. You will find that MirLAX will keep the stool soft without the bloating, it's an excellent stool softener and promotes gut motility without causing dependency. Just check with your pharmacist first, many women are routinely placed on an osmotic laxative post op for at least 6 weeks. You may have had some temporary lactose intolerance post op, lactose free milk and yogurt can help with this in the early stages too. Hope this info helps and all the best for your recovery

      @michellephysio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Jake Nikiforidis yes this is a problem and I understand what you’re saying. There are a number of things to do to manage fissure and bowel emptying 1. Stool softeners are critical and for a good 3 months while the fissure heals 2. Use a topical rectal cream/ointment usually containing glyceryl trinitrate can relieve pain and promote healing (speak with the pharmacist) as these can provide pain relief during emptying and finally use the moo to poo technique focusing on the abdo bulge forward during emptying as doing this relaxes the anal sphincter see here th-cam.com/video/QDk93cvZAuk/w-d-xo.html hope all this helps you understand the way forward to manage Jake, all the best 🙏

@Yie Notme yes oats GF or not can be really very helpful for stool softening as they are high in dissolvable soluble fibre. With gluten intolerance yes the GF option can be a good one. Note of caution with GF oats - ensure they are entirely GF as some brands are processed with wheat, barley & rye. I’ve had mixed success with different brands of GF oats as a result so check on the manufacturing/processing if you are gluten intolerant. All the best!
