Thank you so much for this review. Very informative. I swapped the shell of my pro controller but was too scared to do my joycons. You've convinced me to try the mod.
i know this is 3 years old but i recently installed an extremerate black softtouch case with scarlet red buttons this week(about $95 total for the entire case on amazon) i absolutely love the look and feel!... the only accident i had was when installing the zr button, with the way the button has to be installed i was as careful as i could be but when the button finally clicked it in it pushed the metal bracket and carbon actuator off the board(ordered a new ribbon cable for $5 so no big deal), everything else works but i did have one fitment issue around the vents on the bottom of the backplate where the plastic pushes up and away from the vent and distorts itself by like 1/2 mm causing the kickstand to not sit 100% flush when closed( i took it apart a second time to make sure i didnt do something wrong its still slightly off)... if you arent looking for it its not noticeable... and also realized to make sure you use the screws they provide... for whatever reason not all of nintendos screws catch the plastic and just auto strip out, where as extremerates screws catch 100% perfect everytime and lock in
I wanna say this now in case no one knows yet, but if you break the ribbon cable on the LED/Side Button Board for the joycon's rail, DO NOT WORRY! Extremerate has replacement LED/Side button boards in different colors, so if you absolutely NEED those buttons or want an excuse to swap out the LEDs, go hit up their amazon page for a set!
fun fact: the screws that com ewith the shell are not Y screws like the original and are way more sturdy which makes it easier to disassemble them in the future. And replacement joysticks are really cheap. So actually, repairing them in the future is way more easy since you also already know how to disassemble a Joy Con.
Then you just order a new set of sticks from Amazon for $11 and, since you already have the experience in taking the Joy-Con's apart, you replace them.
I do confirm, it wears down over time. I bought an eXtremerate shell (white), that I used over a year, and the coding wears down and you can with your nails (with very little effort) scratch off the coding. So i would not recomend the white shells.
This helped convince me my purchase of these on Amazon weren't a waste. I prefer the D pad design on the Basstop, but they're pretty hard to get a hold of in my country and their quality control seems sketchy.
I just finished replacing my left one to a glacier blue with color buttons. They look great, the only problem is that maybe the shells do not sit that perfect. It’s like the back plate of the shell is out of place and not smooth. I’m thinking about sanding it or something but I feel like it may ruin it.
It would make a lot more sense then by this sense that all you need to do is get a full set of replacement parts to build the joy cons with, the warranty on new parts would be covered by a clause which means they can only be considered as void once they've been put in the shell if they're then to get the shell replaced so you'll have official joy cons according to law
Good video! I just got two joycons off eBay for 33$ and the Dpad shells off Amazon for 20$. The joycons are supposed to be heavily used but work fine. I hope this works out and I basically have new controllers. Any thoughts on my plan?
I mean certain parts of it are, like software that allows the piracy of new Switch releases. Other than that I do think that some parts are harmless like installing Android or old emulators since a lot of those roms are from companies that either dissolved or got absorbed into something else.
tru but it’s not really the cfw it’s self that is “sketchy” it’s just the programs that people make with it, with the right knowledge it’s 100% safe, just like physical modding

Ummmm, throw out a joycon if you break a ribbon cable..? No, you can replace all of those cables for a fraction of the price.
Extremerate have those same color button, but have embossed lettering instead. So they wouldn't fade out overtime.
Amazing editing work dude, you've earned my subscription!
And may I say, you deserve many more subs!

This channel is under rated
Imagine going threw all the work and your joycons start drifting

It's an easy replacement tbh
Happened to me earlier today, but ordered new sticks from amazon for around 6 bucks

I can confirm the topic of the BASEshell brand being shitty. Mine came all scratched and scuffed to oblivion.
The one dislike is from that strain of hair
"So if you break one of these, you might as well just throw out your entire controller"
Um what? Just buy a replacement rail assembly...
Yeaaaa, I forgot that replacement parts for joycons existed, oops :p

If everything is built right are they going to be able to tell that you took them apart?
Really nice video man! I think I'll get them, I want to give my plain grey/black joy-cons a fancy look

Swap the sticks while you have them open its just 2 more screws and a ribbon cable each.
You have an otamatone?! Amazing!
How is the dpad with fighting games like qcf punch or dragon punches in street fighter?
It’s definitely a little tough since it’s a stiffer d pad, if you’ve ever played any 2d game on a dsi to new 3ds it’s a similar feeling
This helped me out a lot
I broke the ribbon on my ZR button and ordered a new one on Amazon that was close to the OEM one. So no, Dont toss your joycon
Anybody know how eXtremeRate makes their “soft” touch texture?
Great video
Name of fighting game on 4:46 please?
Skullgirls: 2nd Encore! It's a fantastic fighting game btw, it's very reminiscent of Marvel VS Capcom 2
Was that a joke at the end? I think I might be too dumb to get it
homebrew aint sketchy
