A little feedback, music is a touch to loud. It's too hard to concentrate on your voice with sudden ups and downs of the music. I do love the smooth jazz tho. ;)
Macho Nacho Productions Hi there just wanted heads up you forgot to put the little dust Cover located in the original joy-con shell, when removing the joystick dust will get inside easier because it’s missing that.
His channel is only a year old... do you have any idea how long it takes the average TH-camr to build a massive following? It's a marathon, not a sprint. Relax.
I was looking for Switch D-pad solutions, and came across this old video. It's clear that over the past three years, you've grown as both a modder and a content creator. You're more confident now, and your production values have noticeably improved.
I don’t have a Switch, don’t intend to buy one, but watched this anyways. 😄 Love the little b-roll interlude of starting up the background music. I tend to comment on your vids because they are just so well done and clear, and you need to know that you are hitting it out of the park each time.
I don't have a switch or any Nintendo products. Actually I have never a Nintendo switch before , still I watched till end I don't know why 🤣. But l liked it . Keep making amazing videos ❤️❤️
Awesome tutorial! Just finished doing this to my joy-cons thanks to this video. I went with the EU SNES colours. Only fiddly bit was swapping out the battery tray as my joy-cons were the red & blue ones. I had to swap out the tray or I'd end up with coloured strips by my triggers. Getting them trigger springs aligned was a bit of a pain. There's also a couple of differences with your kit compared to mine. I didn't get the SL & SR buttons or any triggers. Just thought I'd mention in case anyone reading this wants the PAL colour scheme. My D-pad also makes fairly audible clicking sound compared to the original buttons. It's not a deal breaker or anything though.
man this was so helpful, the quality, the editing, angle and organization. You've made me less anxious about trying this out on my own. I'll definitely highlight this video when I record my installation of my joycons. I got the great wave pattern with the D-pad
Thank you so much Carritube! So glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! The Great Wave is a really cool design. I got the eXtremeRate Great Wave shell for my Game Boy Color and made a video of it. If you run into any issues or have questions about your joy con installation let me know! Cheers!
I'd really like to do something like this but the Joycons are such a pain in the ass to take apart IMO. Maybe it's just the stories of people bricking them when they do shell swaps scaring me. If I ever get Joycon drift I may do this when I have to swap out a stick.
I think I'm going to do it, I feel a lot more confident just leaving the battery tray and Z button alone ... it will be nice not to have to unplug all the ribbons. The tiny bit of red and blue showing at the top will actually be kind of cute if I buy two kits and do pink and pastel blue! And the kits are so cheap I might as well! I'll definitely need some chill jazz when I do it too.
Haha Jazz is a must! That sounds like a really cool color combination that you're going for! I hope it turns out awesome! Let me know if yo have any questions! Cheers!
Great video. I've done several mods in the past, including soldering stuff on other consoles, but I was scared of doing joycon shell replacements, they seem so fragile! Your video gave me the confidence to give it a go, thank you :)
I love the glimpse at you retro stereo reciever & turntable! Your production quality is fantastic. Great mood lighting, music, also the details in the narrative are helpful & this all makes for a pleasurable viewing experience. Thank you for covering the Switch, I know it's not a new console, but it's nice to see mods for it. I wish Boxy Pixel made an aluminum shell for it & the joycons. Keep up the good work Tito.
Thank you aLeKs! So glad you enjoyed the stereo sequence and I'm very happy you found the video helpful! I would love if Boxy Pixel made some metal shells for the Joy Cons! That would be so awesome!! Cheers buddy!
They also have a Soft Touch version that has a kind of a rubbery feeling to it. I've been very satisfied with mine. I've never once used a single joycon as a controller like they intended so the D pad is a much needed upgrade as far as I'm concerned. And even with the slightly thicker rubber coating my Switch still fits in my grip cases (Skull & Co and Satisfye).
I actually forgot to mention that my shells are also Soft Touch, they do feel great! Yeah same here, I've only ever used the joycons as a controller on very few occasions. Thanks for the input Josh, and hope you are enjoying the channel! Cheers buddy!
I just ordered the eXtremerate D-pad Joycon kit, in Super Famicom style. Hope it goes well and will use your video for a assistance guide. Keep up the awesome work with mods
Thats dope! What i actually did was, i bought a Set of WiiU Gamepad Buttons, because i needed the Dpad, i then opened my left Joycon, modded the Shell and put the WiiU Dpad in there. I had to sand alot to make it all fit and then paint it, but it looks pretty legit now and works great! :)
Worth checking your buttons work before closing up the shell. The ribbon cable came loose on my right one, SR didnt work only 3 buttons lit up. I thought I had damaged it, but it turns out that it just came a bit loose while installing everthing. If you dont want to die prematurely from going insane, don’t use the triwing screws to put the shell back on either. Use the black screws in the bag, theyr same size but regular philips.
A lot of eXtremeRate products are soft touch which look nice at first but with time the oils on your skin will start to permanently smudge/stain your joy con, so I would recommend buying their non soft touch products such as the clear purple shell replacements as an example.
Definitely a better method than how extremerate themselves show it, but you will have to use the battery case the shell comes with, if you don't use a pair of gray joy cons (which seem to be the rarest color) for the mod. With all other colors the plastic part between R and ZR / L and LR will most likely not match the color of the new shell... This requires at least one ribbon cable to be removed, plus you need to install ZR and ZL with two springs each and you need to reuse the micro switches from the original joy cons. So yeah, a little more effort may be required, but apart from that it's very much doable the way you show it here. Thank you for the well made instruction video.
Great video. I did the install and it worked out. One problem: on the right joycon one of the ribbon cables connecting the SL and SR button bar thing snapped, but fortunately all that doesn't work are the LEDS that light up (as far as I know). I might buy a broken right joycon and see if I can replace it, but for now the whole kit and kabootle works great.
I did this shell swap with the classic black & red nes style. Very stylish, but without a pivot the play experience in handheld mode is still significantly inferior to the hori left dpad controller. I've been thinking about ataching some sort of custom pivot to the bottom of the silicon pad under the dpad, but I'm worried about the pressure point damaging the board.
love your videos g, only advice (unless it's just an issue on my end) but your audio mixing needs a bit of adjustment from the episode prelude into the intro and after, your voice when using (camera mic?) is a bit quieter, just fyi either way, again, absolutely lovely work and presentation - stay safe out there and take care, thank you for what you do! x
You definitely should Sean! The d-pad is great if you play some 2D games or NES/SNES games on Nintendo Online! As always, great to hear from you! Cheers friend!
Unusual question, not sure if you can answer. Do you think the hori joycon d-pad will fit into any of these reshells? Since that d-pad has a pivot, it might actually feel even better than this d-pad. If that worked, that would 100% be the ultimate way to get a d-pad joycon.
Hi, i loved the video but i sas that you forgot to transfer the joycon dust protector. I hope your joycons didn't encounter any issues related to that❤
I have 4 dpad Joycons & they are awesome. I have an SNES one, an NES version, a white one & a Black one. I wanted one from boxypixel which are $100 & by the time I decided to give in, they sold out.
@Macho Nacho Productions do you happen to have used the Hori Dpad joycons to compare the feel compared to this mod? I have the Hori, but there are some things I don’t like about it like that it’s not quite the same size as an original which feels weird (and they don’t provide a matching right joycon which is frustrating), lack of wireless support, and in general the dpad feels OK but not as good as I would like. I’ve been thinking about doing one of these shell mods since I literally never use the joycons as single controllers, but if the feel isn’t any better than the Hori pad then maybe it’s not worth it...
Hey Ben! Unfortunately I haven’t tried the Hori dpad joy cons. I will say that the implementation of the dpad with the extreme rate kit is very good, it feels like it came from the Nintendo factory with a dpad. I hope that helps a little. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions That's definitely promising... The Hori pad isn't bad, but it's definitely not amazing and the other downsides really suck. What I really wanted to do was buy a set of used joycons and re-shell those while keeping my originals, but jokes on me, used joycons even years later are still stupid expensive haha! I have a second Switch, tablet only, that I bought used a while back for modding purposes to keep my main switch clean, and figured I'd end up picking up used joycons for it eventually, but the prices somehow never came down lol. Anyway thanks for the review and detailed installation guide. I've done a lot of modding and hardware stuff in general, but anything with the Switch still scares me a little with all those tiny ribbon cables and stories of ruined joycons, but maybe I should just suck it up and try it out on my main joycons. The thing that really stings is that the dpads on the official Switch Pro controllers reeeeeally suck (constantly hitting wrong directions ruining my Tetris 99 games by accidentally hitting up haha), so they're not even a good way to use a dpad unfortunately (what happened to you Nintendo!? You literally invented the dpad!!) so I really would love to have a solid performing dpad on my joycon.
Very good content, the guide looks straightforward enough and well explained. But I'm a joycon drift repair veteran and know how much these things can be a pain to open, and how easily some parts will break even being super careful. So I'm gonna pass even if this mod is music to my ears. Why Nintendo doesn't sell official left joycons with d-pads is totally beyond me.
Totally understand dude! Getting these things apart is pretty tricky. Yeah, I think it would have been great if Nintendo gave the option to have a traditional d-pad! Cheers!

@@MachoNachoProductions Nice video bro! what about the paint and plastic? You have almost a few months testing the shell. Do u see any problem with the paint the Super Nintendo details?
To be honest, more than anything, it allows you to hit UP & RIGHT for example, much easier as you would be able to normally, the same way you would on a retro dpad. Unless your sincerely mentally disabled, hitting multiple buttons accidently is not really going to happen. Its like asking “can I accidently hit Z & ZR”. After having installed the black NES classic last night, can say I have absolutely no regrets. Dpad & controller quality is superb.
It sounds like it could be a damaged joystick. You can buy a replacement pretty easily and they are also fairly inexpensive (about $8). Check eBay for a replacement. Replacing the joystick should be easier than swapping the shell. Best of luck! Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions bro i did that ...still didn’t work 🤦🏼♂️ it kept drifting..I put the old one back on and it worked little better but still not working properly... maybe I just bought a defective one
Without a pivot, it does NOT feel like a real, professional, Nintendo brand dpad. Far too easy for wrong imputs when you accidenrally push the whole dpad down, activating all four directional inputs at once, especially when you're trying for diagonal inputs.
great video. I am currently in the middle of editing the same mod video I did myself. there is a program to change the color that your Switch thinks the joycons are. even the buttons and it will show in the switch whatever color you chose. it's great software and it has many other tools in it like testing the IR sensor in the right joy-con like a camera. its free gbatemp.net/threads/tool-joy-con-toolkit.478560/ great channel. nice production value. I just started my channel and I feel discouraged in keeping up with it now LOL
Great question! I haven’t run into any issues, but I’m pretty careful with my switch. They seem to be somewhat durable but I’m sure they can be scratched it one tried hard enough. Hope that was helpful. Cheers Reuben!
These shells are pretty good and are of much better quality than the first batches of dpad shells, but the fact that they are just a bit thicker than OEM shells bug me a bit
I watched your most recent videos and loved them, wanted to watch more but this one is unwatchable for me due to a very high pitched constant noise coming from your mic :(
Dont reuse those effing triwings, use the replacement screws they have regular heads. If you use the triwinh you will shoot yourself in the balls tryinh to tighten them
This is not 'easy' and the relaxing casual music is not reflective of how you feel when a tiny spring flies across the room or one screw ends up behind the couch, the screws lose their heads, making it impossible to get them in or out. I assume that this is sponsored content? It is not impossible but it is a challenging mod. You acknowledge that it is challenging right at the end of the video but I wonder how many people watched the first five minutes of your video and only saw this comment after trying to use the tutorial, and messing up their joycon?
Thank you for the comment. I hope people who try to attempt this mod watch the video in its entirety before attempting it so they can ascertain the difficulty for themselves. Agree someone shouldn’t attempt this mod on a whim.
This completely voids the warranty from Nintendo themselves, and they won''t fix the inherit drift all of their joy sticks suffer from this generation. As cool as this are, would you really want to drop $60 usd on new ones every year?
If your confident in doing this, then your confident enough to stick a 1mm piece of cardboard behind your joycon, on the odd chance you get drift. Problem solved.

Still holding strong! No complaints as of yet! Cheers!
what scrredrivers/tips are you using? have a nice selection but nothing will give at all! any pointers welcome plz!
Ifixit tool kit. I think there’s a link in my video description.
@@MachoNachoProductions have the pro kit, couldn't figure it out though
My origins joycon did not had the rubber thing where the 4 buttons where placed like huh
does the dpad pivot or is it possible to input opposite directions at once?
If I remember correctly it is possible to hit them all at once much like the unmodified joycon
To be honest,
more than anything, it allows you to hit UP & RIGHT for example, much easier as you would be able to normally, the same way you would on a retro dpad.
Unless your sincerely mentally disabled, hitting multiple buttons accidently is not really going to happen. Its like asking “can I accidently hit Z & ZR”.
After having installed the black NES classic last night, can say I have absolutely no regrets. Dpad & controller quality is superb.
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks for the answer after such a long time :)
Name of the classical music in the video?
D-Pad Style
3 Years to late but be careful with the right bumper ! Mine just broke and now i had to buy an new joycon. So be careful with the little switch !
Is the dpad clicky?
Tried to replace my shell , now my left stick doesn’t probably 🙄...it only goes left and right for some reason ...any suggestions??
I wanna do the same but with Famicom buttons
John I agree, that would be awesome! Cheers dude!
Sup dude
Yo yo!
It kills me that you don't remove and reinstall the ring around the analog stick.
great video. I am currently in the middle of editing the same mod video I did myself. there is a program to change the color that your Switch thinks the joycons are. even the buttons and it will show in the switch whatever color you chose. it's great software and it has many other tools in it like testing the IR sensor in the right joy-con like a camera. its free gbatemp.net/threads/tool-joy-con-toolkit.478560/
great channel. nice production value. I just started my channel and I feel discouraged in keeping up with it now LOL
Thank you Vince! Whoa that is some pretty cool software, I'll have to check that out! Cheers buddy!
Does the shell scratch easily?
Great question! I haven’t run into any issues, but I’m pretty careful with my switch. They seem to be somewhat durable but I’m sure they can be scratched it one tried hard enough. Hope that was helpful. Cheers Reuben!
@@MachoNachoProductions alright thanks :D
You’re welcome!
These shells are pretty good and are of much better quality than the first batches of dpad shells, but the fact that they are just a bit thicker than OEM shells bug me a bit
Agree! They're pretty great! I hadn't noticed that they were thicker. I'm gonna check that out. Thanks for the heads up! Cheers!
