I took 3 hours to do the first one and 30 minutes on the second. This is such a cool skill to learn, especially for when the stick starts drifting. Thank you so much man. I honestly wanna do it again because it was so satisfying to get it right.
If it starts to drift you probably wont need to Open the Joy con at all. You need to buy cleaning spray for electronics. Make sure the Joy con is turned off and you spray on joystick under the little Shell of rubber. Turn the stick around in all directions to make sure the spray goes everywhere it needs to go. Then wait for 2 hours. After that you can calibrate the joycon in the settings and it Probably works perfect again👍🏼 try that first before you buy a new joystick I bought a joystick totally unnecessarily.
Same, I wish my friends had broken joycons so I could do extreme home makeovers for their controllers. I don't want to buy any 2nd hand because they're only like 20 dollars less than brand new.
@@yuiop271 sometimes the issue is within the hardware inside the controller though. My flex cable for the joystick was touching the pcb underneath, which meant that the drift didn't stop no matter how much I cleaned it.
Yea anything like this is really just about being patient and careful. But you really dont have to be as crazy people think just dont go rippingthings apart beast mode style. All about practice.
A tip for those who don't want their springs going missing! Put the whole part with the trigger into a ziplock bag and when it's in the bag, pry the triggers off so they burst out and remain in the bag.

The fact that you took all this time to make a high quality video with genuinely good advice and don't charge a dime for it is truly spectacular. Keep up the good work friend, and I wish you the best.
Okay this tutorial is seriously the best out there. I just finished replacing the shells on my brand new joycons and it went perfectly!! Was scary at first but as I followed along with the video, it got much less intimidating. It's tedious and you need patience but it's not hard to do! Thank you soooooo much for this!!! :D I feel like a pro at it now!
Great tutorial! I was very intimidated at first because I've never done anything like this before, but it was a lot easier than I expected! Took me around 2 hours total
Im so sorry for my comment I didnt know how to replace my shells but once I started to watch your video I followed every step on my left anr gray joycons and I did it perfect without any screw left behind thank you so much. I subscribed!
I’m buying shells in a couple weeks for the first time, I’ll keep this video in my watch later for reference. Will update you on how it goes when I get them!
i suffer from a tremor. and you dont understand how much this tutorial helped me. all the other ones went too fast even with pausing. it gave me time to watch and follow along even if i had to redo steps 30 times 😂 thank you man. highly appreciated.
Thank you for the tutorial, helped me a lot! Word of advice to anyone who uses this kit: I did a test where I used aftermarket springs in the left, and the original springs in the right joycons. They do make a little bit of a difference and I'd recommend using the aftermarket spring! Hope that helps!
Took around 3 hours of redoing and finally finished up my shell replacement! Thank you for the in-depth tutorial, really appreciate it! It was a hassle but still do-able for anyone who wants to replace their shells but are new to all of this :) I'd honestly have a go at it again in the future.

thank you for this tutorial! was putting off replacing my shells for a long time because another tutorial i watched a year ago fiddled with the ribbons and motherboard and i'm not really confident with that. found your tutorial and finally replaced mine successfully!
Excellent video. Got these for my son thinking it would be a slip on kinda thing. No instructions or guidance in the box. Other videos were trying to do it fast, had no words, or no close ups. This saved the day! Clear, pleasant, and easy to follow. Thanks!
I feel a lot more confident doing this now. Thankyou. I'll see how well I do when my parts arrive. I'm changing a lot more then just the joycons so hopefully everything works out!
What else are you doing? Ive done a video on the backplate, but thats as confident as i can be lol. Good luck if you do more. Let me know if you have any issues
I'm doing the joycons and back plate (white). Buttons chrome purple. D-brand skin (white) for the front of the console. The fan grates broken and I don't know how to get the faceplate off or where to get a new one. So I'm thinking of either attempting resin or 3D print at my friend's house, but I'm not really confident I can fix that part. might be worth just saving some money and buying a new one and giving the other one to my partner. I'm modding the dock using d-brand skins and a few weird ideas I had with the LED dock attachment. But won't know if it will work until I've tried it.
Yo man thanks so much. Watched your video countless times before I purchased my shell and buttons. And then watched it countless times again on its way here. Got it all done time shot and all buttons work good 👍🏻
I bought a switch for 60$ everything works well except for the joycon shells that are cracked thanks to you i now have a perfect switch cost less than 100$
I truly appreciate this video. I was following a guide and the person was taking EVERYTHING apart. I am so glad I came across your video, saved me a headache.
Just successfully completed this tutorial last night. Probably the best tutorial on TH-cam currently and doesn't require disconnecting power or anything - making it really easy to do. Thanks a bunch! :)
It took me two days to do this since I stripped the screw on my first controller and by the time I got that out I only had the energy to do the one. However to anyone hesitating, do it!! Do it!! Do it!! It’s so so so so so worth it! Just be careful with the screws. This tutorial is a godsend and honestly it’s so so fulfilling to take apart and then put back together the joycons. I’ve got zero experience in this but this tutorial walked me through everything perfectly and it’s the only one you need!! 10/10 would do again

Had a 100% success my first time changing shells thanks to this video. Been recommending this video to my friends who want to try this out after seeing mine :D
Amazing video! Finally plucked up the nerves to sit down and change the shells on my controllers and this video made it almost easy hahah. I can't understand how you managed to change the shells, talk through all the steps AND keep it perfectly centered in frame!
Excellent guide! There's a lot of components on the motherboard that are easier to move to another shell without disconnecting them and I'm glad this video guide tells me what you should/shouldn't do.
This is hands down the best guide to changing joycon shells! I've managed to do mine with no trouble and I've never done anything with electronics before. Sadly my left joycon still drifts, so I'll probably be taking it apart again soon to fit a replacement. Thank you for this! :D
I followed this entire video to a tee, honestly guys if your looking for the proper way to do it then this video is the one. Couldn't thank you enough for going slow and being an amazing teacher in changing joy cons. 10/10 👏🏽👍🏽❤️😊

I wish I could give a mega like or something, this was such a great tutorial. I was able to swap my joy ones to clear and it looks epic. Thanks so much!
Thank you. Instead of a “mega like” I’d appreciate it if you shared my channel around, help out us small channels loads. Thanks for the comment and take care.
my stepdaughter is looking at new casings for hers, so I looked up a vid to make sure i could do it without mucking it up. Did the right one on my own switch, just disassembly and reassembly, worked like a charm. Now i'm kinda looking forward to when she gets hers so i can do it for real, lol
Awesome tutorial, thank you! It took me just over an hour to do both, although for anyone looking to follow along, some things that aren't very clear in the video : - The outside shells use tri-wing screws, while all inside screws are phillips - At around 8:50, he doesn't seem to transfer it over but there is a plastic sheet that you can put around the joystick hole to block off the view of certain metallic components from the outside, once assembly is completed. He transfers this same piece on the other joycon at 32:00 if you'd like to see what it looks like. I left them out for my see-through purple set. - At 28:45, before you reassemble the side buttons piece, make sure you swap the ZL and ZR buttons (He seems to forget to do his on this joycon)
just successfully finished mine, thank you so much! This helped a ton :) Also, for those also doing this, there's adhesive on some parts so it won't pop off as easily as it looks in the video, take your time and carefully remove it
Great tutorial! Followed all of your instructions and the change over went without any issues. Definitely agree with swapping out the factory Y screws for the X patterned ones. Thanks for this!
Thank you so so much! Just finished with the joy cons, needed to clean the left one because I spilled some orange juice and it wouldn't connect to the switch anymore 😕 Your step by step tutorial helped a lot, never did something like that before and now it works again and looks nice too!
your guide helped a lot! unfortunately one of my screws got stripped so i couldn’t complete the shell swap but thank you for putting out such a professional video that was easy to follow 😄
This video is brilliant, my brother really wants purple joy-cons so I'm buying some and giving them to him as a Christmas gift. Never seen a video so perfectly explained thank you so much.
Omg i just did it and it turned out perfectly! Thank you so much for the help! I even got the same brand as you, but they werent the same shells. The ones i got were pastel pink
I just did mines , you did it in a different way but honestly , the way you did it was far better I trusted you while doing mine, and everything went good ! Thanks man I appreciate it !
watched this video twice and managed to do both in about an hour and a half. Ive never done something like this but this video is the most helpful one I've seen.
I was scared that I was biting more than I can chew when I realized that it wasn't just a "pop-out/pop-in" situation but your tutorial made it so easy! Thank you!!!
The best vid available so far and learn from your mistakes. My springs didn't went everywhere And find a wey no to mix the screws and install them exactly in the same hole
You made this whole process a lot easier. Thank you so much. I got the green chameleon shell replacements for my switch and I absolutely love it and it works perfectly.
Did the joycon swap without pulling out ANY ribbon cables. I didn’t trust myself to be able to put them back in. It was easy to work with the parts still attached. You just have to be sure to give the ribbons some slack but I made the swap successfully. Great product! I swapped the SNES color scheme over my gray ones & will be snagging the Atomic purple today!
Took me so long and a fair load of stress but I’ve never done this stuff before so that’s on me and it’s expected; but the way you did this video is genuinely so helpful. I think in future you’ll want to label what type of nail; I understand it’s a rlly small harmless thing but it did stress me out forgetting what I used and not being told what type. I’d try look but obviously they’re so small I couldn’t. But genuinely I absolutely praise this video. Tysm!!!
Thank you so much for posting this tutorial. I was hesitant on starting this project and I doubted myself, but following your instructions helped me achieved this. Thank you so much!!!
man thank you so much. i haven't even done the right joycon yet, but the left and also the backplate went perfectly. i was so scared at first but this was such a big help!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Did it perfectly, heads up everyone on the left joycon around 34:16 !! WAIT ON THE SCREWS !! He ends up having to re-screw some stuff and I almost stripped a few because I had to un-screw and re-screw! Other than that, made it through all the way with minimal problems, took about 2.5 hours to do both! Super awesome outcome so I highly recommend! Just be patient and really slow with the screws!
This tutorial has been helpful in every step I took to replace my Joycon cases. The right controller was much easier to work on. Thank you very much for the tutorial, man, I really appreciate it.
Thanks for the video! Made replacing the shells and swapping out new joysticks a breeze! Took a couple hours, but definitely so much easier with your closeups. Kept the blue/red theme, and have the clear glacier blue and clear cherry pink. :)
Thanks so much for your videos! I like how you are chill and the camera is close and clear enough that you can see exactly what is going on. Thank you for helping me make my standard red and blue joycons into awesome clear Atomic Purple!!!
This was such a huge help changing my joycon shells, I’ve been wanting to do it for a few years now but was too worried I’d break something. Such an easy swap, well explained so thank you 🙏
I did it and it went perfectly! I really wanted the skyward sword limited edition joycons but they were sold out, being sold by scalpers for over $150 on eBay, and not coming out for another 2 months. So I went to eBay and found the shells of the joycons so I bought them and did this tutorial and I never had one moment of frustration or stress. Also this is the only one I found that showed how to changed the rail side buttons. Other tutorials are good but it ends up just looking like a skin when they don’t change the side buttons
Thank you so much for this! I was nervous when I ordered my shells because I didn’t realize I’d have to perform surgery on my joycons, but I followed along with you and got it done! Took me almost 3 hours but was so worth it!
this tut is better than ExtremeRate's own video, thanks, had a heart attack doing the right joycon when z-r connector broke, but was able to salvage it with a shim from the packaging the shells came in :P now to the left one, watching your videeo at x0.25 speed
Thank you so much! I had to order new joycons previously when I watched another persons video! RIGHT after I found your channel! So I had gotten the joycons and I put the new joycons on and I am so happy with the outcome! THANKS ☺️🙏🏾
i have been searching for ages for my "perfect" third-party switch controller and it just doesn't seem to exist, so i'm sort of considering customizing a pair of my joycons instead...i have never in my life done hardware repair/DIY because all the little fiddly things have always terrified me, but this video is making me feel like maybe i could pull it off?! thanks for making this!!!
@@lordrevan9788 for me I didn't use the gray joycons for well over a year since on joystick didnt work. (I replaced that joystick with a new one) and after I did that all the buttons worked perfectly fine after i updated the controllers in the settings
@@lordrevan9788 just a little pro tip. be careful when unscrewing the 'y' shaped nails because they can easily wear out and you would have trouble taking off the old shell

I just swapped my joy con shells and followed along with your video which made it so much easier than I thought it would be. Thank you very much for this detailed video. I had a bit of trouble getting the original screws off but bought a kit from amazon that did the trick :)
Thanks for this I tried to follow the official video and managed to break a ribbon cable clamp on my right joycon following your video was way easier and saved me anymore stress so I didn't f up another joycon motherboard
You do it much easier than other people I’ve seen. You don’t take everything apart just for the heck of it. This will help me a lot when my housings come in. Thankyou. 🙏
Darn, so even if you want to replace only the shells themselves and not any of the buttons, you still need to take the entire thing apart including the buttons, huh? That looks..terrifying, lol! It's not that big of a deal to me what they look like but I saw some really cool custom shells so I started wondering how you would go about replacing them and if I should buy some..but I'd be too afraid to mess something up / lose parts and cause them to stop working so I'll stick with what they look like now, lol! But very much appreciate the very clear, detailed video nonetheless!
Watched your vid several times before buying the extremerate shells.. then replaced my joy cons as i was watching your video. Super helpful and easy to do.. I now have snes looking joycons. 👌👌 Keep up the good work!!!

I’m at minute 6:35 and so far this s really the best video of these kinds I’ve seen since everyone else takes every cable out of the joycon and honestly I am to scared to take all the cables out because I think it might rip something I’m not supposed to . Really I am currently just watching this so I can kinda prepare myself because my replacements will only come in two days
A bit late to the party, but I just did mine. I'm never doing it again! OMG I'm so tired from the stress of the entire process... Thanks for the detailed guide though! Great job!
This was such a fun diy!! Even though I broke off the trigger-thing for the ZR-Button (and even tried to to order a replacement, but that would have taken 3 weeks to arrive - so...) I'd just secured it with some tape and it works again. I learned so much about controllers and due to the fixing I really got into it and tried several things to make it work. The best feeling is to push the ZR button and see the joycon lighten up again! Thanks for the tutorial

my stepdaughter is looking at new casings for hers, so I looked up a vid to make sure i could do it without mucking it up. Did the right one on my own switch, just disassembly and reassembly, worked like a charm. Now i'm kinda looking forward to when she gets hers so i can do it for real, lol
Awesome tutorial, thank you! It took me just over an hour to do both, although for anyone looking to follow along, some things that aren't very clear in the video :
- The outside shells use tri-wing screws, while all inside screws are phillips
- At around 8:50, he doesn't seem to transfer it over but there is a plastic sheet that you can put around the joystick hole to block off the view of certain metallic components from the outside, once assembly is completed.
I was absolutely terrified going into this process, but this tutorial seriously helped. Thank you so much!
Thank you so so much! Just finished with the joy cons, needed to clean the left one because I spilled some orange juice and it wouldn't connect to the switch anymore 😕
Your step by step tutorial helped a lot, never did something like that before and now it works again and looks nice too!
Nice one. Well, not nice you spoilt OJ on it, nice one you fixed it 👍🏻
your guide helped a lot! unfortunately one of my screws got stripped so i couldn’t complete the shell swap but thank you for putting out such a professional video that was easy to follow 😄
How do you get a stripped screw out. Having trouble with this rn
This video is brilliant, my brother really wants purple joy-cons so I'm buying some and giving them to him as a Christmas gift. Never seen a video so perfectly explained thank you so much.
Thank you for the comment. Means a lot. Appreciate it.
Out of all the videos I've seen this is by far the best! Never did this before but this video made it easy
Glad it helped 👍🏻
Omg i just did it and it turned out perfectly! Thank you so much for the help! I even got the same brand as you, but they werent the same shells. The ones i got were pastel pink
Perfect! Glad it helped. 👍🏻
Glad it helped 👍🏻
I was scared that I was biting more than I can chew when I realized that it wasn't just a "pop-out/pop-in" situation but your tutorial made it so easy! Thank you!!!
TYSM!! This was unbelievably helpful. Especially considering the extremeRate kit I got off Amazon didn’t come with any instructions. Lifesaver
10 months after you posted this I still use this video to this day to customize my joycons 😁 only video I ever needed in my life!
I’m so pleased it helps. 👍🏻
The best vid available so far and learn from your mistakes.
My springs didn't went everywhere
And find a wey no to mix the screws and install them exactly in the same hole
Glad it helped in some way 👍🏻
You made this whole process a lot easier.
That’s good to know. Nice one 👍🏻
@@CTAtechdesk holy cow thanks for the reply! Thank YOU!
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the video! Made replacing the shells and swapping out new joysticks a breeze! Took a couple hours, but definitely so much easier with your closeups.
Kept the blue/red theme, and have the clear glacier blue and clear cherry pink. :)
Nice 👍🏻 Glad it helped
Thanks so much for your videos! I like how you are chill and the camera is close and clear enough that you can see exactly what is going on. Thank you for helping me make my standard red and blue joycons into awesome clear Atomic Purple!!!
This was such a huge help changing my joycon shells, I’ve been wanting to do it for a few years now but was too worried I’d break something. Such an easy swap, well explained so thank you 🙏
Followed this guide as I worked on mine. Really was not as bad as I thought it would be. Thanks for the guide!
Glad you did it ok 👍🏻. What colours did you go for ?
I love this video, but can you add intense surgery music in the background?
this tut is better than ExtremeRate's own video, thanks, had a heart attack doing the right joycon when z-r connector broke, but was able to salvage it with a shim from the packaging the shells came in :P now to the left one, watching your videeo at x0.25 speed
Thank you so much. So happy with my sakura pink switch. :)
I spoke to extremerate about Sakura pink. They said it’s one of their most popular. 👍🏻 good choice.
Such a wonderful guide, so clear and thorough.
I would highly suggest the tweezers, I can't imagine doing the right joy con without a pair
Going to do this, this weekend. You make it look easy 😂
Ha. Well it’s not too hard, just go slowly. Good luck 👍🏻
KYL0 REX how did it go m8? I’m doing mine next weekend.
Dustin Sin Very easy. Take it slow and watch the video, pausing it when you need too. 👍🏻
Console Accessories Hi I’ve recently place my order at extremerate may I know how you’ve paid them? Did you use paypal?
PayPal is always a good option for buyers. But I/we bought them off amazon. 👍🏻
I'm 16 years old and I just finished changing my joycon shells from gray to white. honestly super happy it came out so perfect
Does it still work fine?
@@lordrevan9788 for me I didn't use the gray joycons for well over a year since on joystick didnt work. (I replaced that joystick with a new one) and after I did that all the buttons worked perfectly fine after i updated the controllers in the settings
@@lordrevan9788 in short, yes. yes, they work perfectly fine. it only took me about an hour to do both. it's really not hard at all
@@lordrevan9788 just a little pro tip. be careful when unscrewing the 'y' shaped nails because they can easily wear out and you would have trouble taking off the old shell
@@notjesuss120 I'm also thinking about changing mine to white. How is it after months of usage? Does it get dirty easily?
I was terrified of doing this becuase it looked so complicated but after watching this vid and finishing the first one,, I pretty much managed to do the second one on my own and quickly. it was a lot of fun and almost felt like building with legos. TYSMM!!
I'm also terrified. Idk if I should do it..
I just swapped my joy con shells and followed along with your video which made it so much easier than I thought it would be.
Thank you very much for this detailed video.
I had a bit of trouble getting the original screws off but bought a kit from amazon that did the trick :)
Glad it helped. What colours did you go for ?
Thanks for this I tried to follow the official video and managed to break a ribbon cable clamp on my right joycon following your video was way easier and saved me anymore stress so I didn't f up another joycon motherboard
Just used your tutorial to change my joycons to light pink with pastel buttons and it looks awesome! thanks so much for this
You do it much easier than other people I’ve seen. You don’t take everything apart just for the heck of it. This will help me a lot when my housings come in. Thankyou. 🙏
Yeah. It’s why I made the video. I tried it first using a guide and thought “I don’t need to do that, I don’t need to do that”. Glad it helped.
Best video on TH-cam mate. Well done for doing it... The others I looked at only did half the job!... Thanks!!!
Keep up the good work!!!
Glad it helped 👍🏻
Back again.. 3 year later.. just changed my BRAND NEW OLED neon joycons for a set of all black extreme rate shell's.. now my new switxh is looking stealthy ❤
This guide helped so much man. Just did it myself in around an hour or so. Thanks again!
A bit late to the party, but I just did mine. I'm never doing it again! OMG I'm so tired from the stress of the entire process...
Thanks for the detailed guide though! Great job!
Yeah. It’s a tough one isn’t it.
Thank you very much, it is my first time changing the shells of my Nintendo and they have been perfect, it is very well explained, it helped me a lot
Thank you so much!! this Video saved me. The walkthrough was very helpful and I completed it in under two hours with no problems.
