Is The Nintendo Switch Worth It (2017)?
Three years later, DoujinDance is still modding and the quality of his work is unparalleled. I just purchased an RGB region modded PC Engine Duo from him a week ago. I now have 177 back ups to test the machine with....
awesome, glad to know that he's keeping up with that. Also damn its really been that long? 🤣
@@N8_THN I found TH-cam videos about DoujinDance and from him going back at least 11 years.
His prices are less or near the same as 3 years ago. I paid $269.99 total for a fully re-capped and region modded PC Engine Duo.
Everyone wants a pvm/ bvm it’s a waste of money, up there with trinitrons. I can take my sharp tv with scart input and slap Sony and trinitron stickers all over it, the world just chasin for the “best” which kills the hobby, when I was 9 I didn’t care about pvm or what was best. Just let me play the game & leave me alone.
I wish i knew about this before getting a pc engine i got the base one😭
Either way, you got a system with a fantastic library of games!
What's the difference with the R vs the other?
Can the pc engine duo play regular pc cd games?
Yep! Should work just fine
@N8_THN okay thanks
I have learned that the best CRT is the one you already own
Change the first word of the title to "Don't". The word "Can't" does some fomo, where that is absolutely out of place. You don't want a PVM. Period. I miss another important option. Just get a SCART TV. You might expect your audience to be in the US, but maybe that isn't the case entirely (check stats), and with all weird shit happening in US politics, maybe it is time to move to Europe anyway... An abundance of RGB CRTs will await you.
Move to Europe and deal with PAL/50hz? Ew. No, I'll take a PVM/BVM any day.
@@bnr32jason All proper CRTs here (roughly 1988 and newer) handle multi-system, including 60Hz NTSC.
I applaud you for showing one of my favourite games of all time @ 5:07, you take me right back to Christmas morning in 1987 when I got my master system. The boss fight with Hawk was always playing in the window of my local computer store, Christmas couldn't come soon enough!
Here in Europe it's so much easier... Scart Cable annnnddd done. RGB mode activated🙃
What I don't like about RGB NES is that you loose original Composite output and instead get re-encoded from RGB version which is not the same due to how NES graphics was made in games. Otherwise what it gives is something I can already get with MISTer FPGA + ability to play with Dendy timings and/or PAL games. As great as Everdrive N8 Pro is with its save states the NES core on MISTer can do the same and even use original gamepads so... RGB NES is kinda pointless expense. I cannot play original carts on MISTer but really if I would have game that wasn't dumped yet I should send it to someone who can dump NES games and not play it myself from rare original cart. Also imho "image quality purist" is not someone who just blindly replaces composite with RGB because pixels look sharper but can assess where and when image is better. To me especially NES games that use NTSC artifacting look just broken in RGB. Instead of having complex patterns that are supposed to simulate looks of something I see that sprite or tile has four colors and at which spot each color is used - this isnt high image quality. Also how can people post videos or images with poorly made Composite grabs and sell it as "this is how bad Composite looks!" with clear conscience. There is like dozen issues with capturing proper Composite and you are supposed to view the image on classic 15KHz CRT. So if anything do proper photo/video of the same CRT screen. Also instead of trying to sell people on the product at least try to be objective - just not pretend you do but actually do by finding examples which might be against your point - even if you think RGB is still better it then shows you are objective in being subjective. As it is you look like just blindly modding another system for the heck of it and being able to call yourself "picture quality snob". It might impress some people but won't impress true image quality nerds who are so nerdy they specifically use Composite and call out RGB lemmings out :) And to be clear: I do like RGB even in NES/Famicom. It just isn't as simple as sharper == better. In fact at places Composite has sharper pixels. Often these effects are unintended and just side-effect of how NES encodes colors but at times it is obvious game developer saw this effect and came up with how to change bug in to a feature. Then you display this game in RGB and given line is just solid color - does it look better? No, it does not and why RGB isn't always an improvement. Also and this is very important: you cannot really capture certain effects you see on CRT by grabbers. And with converting RGB to Composite (like RGB NES does) you can actually break original intent. "Just use composite from encoder chip because we already added it for S-Video output" and no effort comparing original Composite to the one from RGB NES mod does not instill confidence any care or attention was put in to it. Not to mention that you would at the very most need very specific palette and you still would not be able to get to original results. Yeah... this mod breaks original mage quality. I would not be too surprised if the supposed Composite captures were made from RGB NES output and not original - not to mention that if you just use grabber you are doing it wrong anyways.
I'm so happy I accidentally came across your video. You potentially solved a couple issues for me. SCART to component, is exactly what I have been needing, and somehow, Google searches never really helped me. Thank you. I genuinely mean it, Thank you so much.
Boy I am so glad that we have Scart here in Europe. No modding necessary for RGB.
While i appreciate the video, as an owner of a consumer tv with rgb scart input, even that pales in comparison to a pvm or bvm. The line count and resolution are just not there. Consoles on vga crts are said to be close to what pvms offer but i haven't seen this for myself. I hate that pvms have become so expensive, because pvm owners need to have 40 of them, if you're reading this and are one of those people f**k u buddy 😊 Even prices for retro consoles that were produced in the tens of millions are skyrocketing. I'll probably just get the clone of the mister fpga that is releasing shortly and a vga crt with a gbs control and play "backups" that way. I'm not sinking thousands of dollars for retro gaming, especially when that money does to elitists or greedy scalpers. Have a nice f**cking day🫡
I buy my Pvms from Analogattic, the guy in the Ebay picture you showed. His service is fantastic. Every crt he has shipped to me has been in fantastic shape and packaged in a way to ensure it won't break. I don't live close to large cities so finding a crt locally is very difficult.
Those component cables from HD Rertovision do have an AES adapter. That's what I'm using on my Neo Geo AES current. Additionally, there are also cost-effective solutions from retro tink. It doesn't have to be the 5x solutions. The 2x does a good job also. Thanks for sharing about the jungle chip modding method. That new to me.
You can't actually die working on a CRT unless maybe you have a heart condition or something, or are working on it when it's plugged in. High voltage, low current - it can hurt like hell and probably knock you out, but it won't kill you.
Very much this, yes. The actual shock from the tube won't kill you. What makes it dangerous is that it will make you aggressively flinch your arm and jump away, at which point you could trip and split your head open on a table.
After messing about with all these additional extras just buy a retrotink 4K and be done with it. Yeah it’s expensive but you will never need another scaler and the quality of the damn thing is incredible.
I have the RetroTink 4K and love it. But I also have CRT's and love them as well. It's OK to like both.
A crt with component is all I need. I sd and hd crts and it just feels right. I do want a pvm tho to play nintendo while Im in the bathroom.
So many HD tvs still have component. My main tv in my living room is a vizio 60 inch led tv thats only 1080p. Tv is over 14 years old and has performed so well i havent replaced it. It will end up in my gaming room. That tv has component and even has an rgb vga port with audio. I have tested Dreamcast on it directly with no upscaler needed and it outputs perfectly. Same with component no isuess with any systems. Just saying you dont need a crt tv with component. Some HD tvs are compatible like the one I have
For the Dreamcast which outputs 480p to a modern HDTV, you are correct. But connect a Genesis or Saturn or NeoGeo to that same TV via component and it will look terrible and be lag city.
This was very helpful awesome vid
You kids and your fancy RGB, SCART, Component, and S-Video... When I was a kid, all my consoles only had RF or rarely, composite if we were lucky and feeling fancy. But RF was ugly, noisy, and free with the consoles I got 2nd hand.
New to your channel, but have you checked up EMUVR yet?
Very neeto
9:17 wow lightning tv. i think after i cleaned my sony ill just try to put the back case back on tho its a bit stuck at the moment. im planning on getting a PVM soon and ive got a cheap b/w mini 5.5inch tv and ill use a Hdmi to RF yet again im trying to downsize as i may be moving house soon
Yes, warning very much needed to not screw around in a CRT without remembering the can die part. You're probably fine with a good pair rubber gloves that's made for electrical work but be careful. It's no joke.
Nowadays i inherited a toshiba 32" thats pretty nice. Like 8 yrs ago i made the mistake of giving a way a really nice hd crt with a flat screen on front. Not sure the brand, probably sony. Judt gave it away on craigslist. Ouch
Hello, what game is this ?? Thanks in advance 8:00
Cadash on the TG-16/Pc Engine. Its very good!
Thank you! @@N8_THN
Awesome video! Also Xbox 360 supports vga natively as well
I got my PVM from a local collector friend in my town, he gave it away to me because he didn't had the use for it, so I had the task to spend BNC to SCART cables and a Retrotink Comp2RGB bcuz my PVM doesn't have YpBpr, so I'll never sell it and then the white balances are kinda heavyly used... So yeah interesting video there btw
Why there is jazz jackrabbit 2 music in the background 5:23 ?
I figured since I was talking about computer monitors that I'd use some tracks from retro PC games like Jazz. I'm quickly running out of funky genesis tunes so I'm beginning to expand my horizons in terms of game music
@@N8_THN that makes sense but one thing I haven't see any one talking it's if you use PC If someone from same reason want to use CRT what is better to use CRT TV or CRT monitor for computer's? For example I personally play everything in PC and play all kinds of game's on computer for old to New game and yes this includes jazz jackrabbit 2 😅 And I have one adaptor in the order to connect a CRT Tv to be honest I don't have CRT monitor But this TV is about the size off computer CRT and the don't have sound so it's probably the same with PC monitor accepted maby the resolution And yes I know that in the order to connect TV you need adaptor but the same aplay In VGA in most newer graphics card
If you dont have a tv with composite check for s video not as good but better than normal RCA
Just a FYI There is 2 standards for SCART configurations (Europe) & (Japan) also Japan has their own standards for Component call the D-Terminal + LR audio. Way Back I had a Thompson RGB 20" TV from back from Hong Kong to be use purely RGB and a stepdown converter from 220 > 110V
While they look similar, it's not two types of SCART, one is called SCART and one is called JP21.
I got my Sony 2030 a few years ago for $50 CAD and a 14" for $100 USD inc chipping from the states. I reciently got a 9" for $50 CAD and another on FB market place locally for $50 bucks. Alot of people don't want these clunky heavy boxes and happy to have us move them out. I keep them for all my older systems from Game console RGB to Home computers Atari ST, Amiga, Amstrad, Simcoupe all runing on the PVM via Scart
I just don't understand this obsession with best RGB output. Just use consumer TV and composite if you want authentic experience. Had a pvm and sold it. Came back to 14" consumer Trinitron and composite for my PS1. Why? I actually like the way composite blends dithering and colours. For a while I have used official big chunky grey PS1 RGB SCART cable, but the image was actually too sharp for my taste.
You say authentic, but authentic for who? Not everyone grew up the same way. Lots of people in Europe and parts of Asia grew up with RGB. I mean I grew up mostly in Japan and my family got our first TV with RGB in the early 90's, got a Super Famicom at launch, and bought the official RGB cables with it. I enjoy composite as well just fine, but I'm nostalgic for RGB as well.
@ Im from Europe and despite rgb scart being standard on most tv’s back in the day I rarely saw anyone using it with consoles.
Fuck collecting PVMs. We all know these people don't use them all, sell them reasonably or confide it to someone.
I've seen people with as many as 5 to 10 at home. Why the hell do you need so many connected to different consoles when you can just use one or two (if having different sizes) for all the consoles? it makes no sense.
I have three PVM's (20L5, 20M2U, and 14L2) and a BVM (A20F1), each and every one of them gets used at least a couple times a week. Maybe stop making generalizations? I also regularly use and LOVE my Pioneer CRT that only has composite.
@@sonyx5332 I have almost 20 CRT's, and host big retro game nights for my local community at least 4 or 5 times a year. They all get used, it's fun.
I only had CRTs with composite back in the 90’s and I don’t recall anyone gaming in the 90’s using RGB or BVMs & PVMs. Heck, most of my friends played via RF! Play whatever you want however you want but IMO composite on my 13” CRT is fantastic. I seen that the retrotink 4k replicates the CRT look very well and while it’s a little costly it’s nowhere near what I’d have to pay for playing via BVM or PVM. Just my opinion but even with just composite on regular consumer CRTs is a better option than any current LCD/LED flat panel.

Great Video Nate! Keep it up!
Nice video! A few notes: The unshielded boombox is a little close to that TV! HD Retrovision does make different DIN8 adapters for your Master System, Neo Geo, and your RGB-modded Duo-R consoles. Genesis 1 and Neo Geo have different DIN8 cables: 262 vs 270° based on the position of pins 6 and 7 (U vs C-shape). Stock NEC AV was 180° DIN5 (no RGB) so you could replace it with the wrong one for the adapter which is why they don’t sell it everywhere. I forget which arrangement they settled on but the pinout has to be different since the green pin is used for a second audio channel (stereo).
Thanks for the feedback! I'll definitely move the boombox asap.
@@N8_THN you can also just pull the speakers out and shield them yourself, it's not really difficult to do at all. Will cost you a few bucks at the hardware store.
You're in New England?!?! I'm Def subscribing.
Here in Italy we have Mivar CRTs: cheap, good quality and full scart with rgb support. Remember guys: the best CRT is the one that you can play. Don't chase those PVMs too much.
Yes sir! I'm all about showing people alternatives but if you want to stick with what you got, there's nothing wrong with that!
@03:55 - I have a similar Bang & Olufsen TV. Mine is an MX5500 and it is one of the few CRTs in North America with SCART RGB. Another is a Sony KV-2900. The best PVM alternative (especially if you want 27" or larger and you don't want to spend thousands) is a Toshiba A-series. Curved screen + component is bliss
the B&O ones are nice, and the swivel stand gosh
@MrAlan1828 yea I don't use the swivel stand. My MX5500 sits on top of a stand that I got for free which is at a better height then the swivel stand.
Even most VCRs do not have PVM inputs and outputs.
Huh? Most PVM's support composite, which most VCR's support.
@@bnr32jason Well, I am confused because I thought it might be a problem.
The boom happened back in 2011-2012, so the days of being able to find old equipment for cheap are gone. Now it's been over a decade so any units (even normal TV sets now) are only in the hands of people that want them and the ones that aren't are literally tossed into the trash by uncaring people. I find it extremely odd that something was sold in the hundreds of millions are actually getting hard to find, and this HAS to be for the fact that people throw them away. Even flat panel LCD TVs were manufactured in the hundreds of millions in the past 15 years alone, and you don't see that many, why? They get tossed out like any other garbage.
I got lucky enough to have kept my old CRT 21 inch TV. Is nothing special. Just normal CRT(although i like the colours) but it does the work for a few retro consoles and is not like i use it all the time so i am just gonna stick with that instead of going in a wild ghost hunt for PVM's or whatever. The good old days i used to play and having fun on even worst CRT that this one(the one i have i bought it in 1996 so is not very old for a CRT) so i think is fine enough for that retro experience fun without the need for PVM etc. Many of us seem to forget that in the end is about playing and having fun not about chasing some imaginary perfection. I tried some emulation and FPGA on my newer flat screen TV's and screen and honestly you can enjoy your old games just fine with them as well. You don't really need all this trouble of trying to get the perfect retro experience. The fact that you can play just fine on the as well if you do a few good settings is also another reason i don't feel the need to go chasing for old TV's. i know the one i have will probably die one day anyway but i don't care looking for an extra one as a back-up because i think in the end using a modern TV is fine enough. You may need an upscaler or something for your old consoles but it is still much easier to get that than chasing old Tv's.
Im lucky I got a 22 inch trinitron monitor that runs at 2560x1920 a secondary for emulation, a 35inch 240p diamondtron, a 27 inch Toshiba flat crt 240p and a couple of 17 inch crts tvs, 30 inch Panasonic tv and the piece of resistance the 31 inch grand wega 1080i/720p hd crt if i had more space i would have crt projection tvs everywhere too
It's harder to find but definitely not to hard to find a regular set. I have a lot of free ones from family or just the street.
Yeah it sucks that people do that
A lot are also dying. Nothing is built to last forever. I used to have a CRT but with a the Retrotink 4K I just ended up selling it as we are now close enough on 4k tvs
The composite is still better on the Genesis and the Saturn on the CRT due to the dithering...
after RGB you'll never want to go back to composite ;)
@@MrAlan1828 But the RGB will lose all the dithering....
@@MrAlan1828This. Dithering is such a small part of the graphics (depending on the game) that it isn’t worth having everything else be inferior just to keep nice waterfalls in Sonic😂
@@RedRanger2001 yes, you don't get dithering effects when using RGB, but I'll take the improved quality 100% of the time over the occasional missed dithering effect.
After seeing this video I can say I don’t think I need anything better than my S-video 27inch. Glad you showed me what I wanted to see here. I don’t see much of a difference between svideo and rgb and feel it has its own charm.
As long as you enjoy the games you play that's all that matters!
@@N8_THN yes sir!
It is the sweet spot my opinion using S-video. Bigger CRTs is not better and using RGB changes the colors so not like what we saw/played back in the day.
@@CAPCOM784 yeah also I noticed it’s better for games with dithering also.
I've gone the same SCART to component solution, though using AliExpress converters instead of the one you mentioned. I've bought 3 of them for my systems that don't have component options, such as the Saturn. I'm happy with it so far, though I have not tried hooking up my Dreamcast yet since the SCART cable just came in. This was much cheaper than buying the HD Retrovision cable. Now I have a cart with a bunch of my 6-7th gen systems with 1 video component out I have to worry about, and 2 switchers I can select what system I want on. I am pretty happy with this setup.
I would have just gone with an S-Video based setup if there was actually switchers for them. That probably would have been the quickest and cheapest route if I wanted to deal with all of the cables.
nice, any HDMI to VGA adapter recommendations?
The one I used in this video is one of those cheap ones on Amazon that are under dozens of different brands. Looking back, I probably should have used a usb powered one like this one ( a.co/d/3MpalzU ) so I don't have to worry about the loss of signal quality or additional lag. Hope this helps!
Bro tried to get a PVM or BGM since 2016, no luck yet
I been using a SCART to component adapter on my Toshiba CRT for awhile now. Definitely recommended for videophile retro gamer on a budget!
I was confused when i saw SCART on TV in Half Life: Alyx
