- How to Install an SSD into a PS5. Sony have unlocked the PS5’s internal SSD, which allows you to install an additional SSD into the PlayStation 5. Since the Public Beta released I’ve tested different SSDs on the internal bay and installed them with and without a heatsink. This is my quick guide for installing an M.2 NVMe SSD (2TB) into the PlayStation 5. Plus how to use a heatsink if you buy an SSD without one.

I'll run through the different options (250GB - 4TB), installation, new menu settings and gaming tests. Although it might seem complicated at first, this process will only take 5-15 minutes with one screwdriver.

UPDATE: The next PS5 system software update is tomorrow - 15th September 2021 - You'll be able to install your M.2 SSDs without the beta from then.
Just heard the news. Came back to watch the video again to see what im about to get myself into. Lol.
Can you do a video explaining how and where the heat is going from the SSD? I see those two little notches on the long side of the SSD bay next to the fan, does heat dissipate through those little notches and then get pulled into the fan? Or is negative pressure pulling cool air into those notches and pushing it through another slot inside the bay?
How’s your WD M.2 holding up? Which M.2 would you get?

I agree! Now a days, it feels like TH-camrs will spend 10 minutes talking about the history of why it took so long for Sony to release these specs, then 10 minutes talking about their history of opening console systems and how the PS5 differs from them, then 10 minutes talking about the advantages/disadvantages of Sony and Microsoft's way of upgrading their machines. Usually I already left in a few minutes looking for another video or do an internet search.
@@beartackle they do that because the longer the video, the more adds they can pump in so they make an access of money when they don't need to because they are greedy.
I'm surprised one of those videos didn't steal footage from that awful Fantastic Four movie, with a team of scientists sent on a search to another dimension for an impossible-to-find compatible NVME, only for everything to go horrendously wrong.
They're always trying to make simple things look difficult to fuel the console war and get clicks.

I was waiting too until I started seeing the drives go out of stock everywhere and with the chip shortage still going on I said screw it and got one early I can already see these prices skyrocketing on ebay and the manufacturer saying "sorry can't make them fast enough not enough chips"

@@painsenpai01 for sure man. Some kids are out there just wanting to play games and they are sitting on a boat load of ps5s.
Replacing that metal cover after installing the SSD is very important as there are holes underneath in that SSD area that the PS5 fan will suck the heat out from the SSD keeping it cooler. I see many are purposely leaving the metal cover off thinking it will keep the SSD cooler this way... but that's a mistake. Sony has a system in place to keep the SSD cooler by removing the SSD heat but the metal cover needs to be on for this process to work properly.
It's not a mistake -_- leaving the cover off WILL make it run cooler obviously as heat rises and the fan will still take heat away from the unit. The lid is only to prevent it from collecting a ton of dust and nothing else. Many things are designed for aesthetics on Sonys consoles and not for performance, been that since the ps3 and this is no different.
@@Ardonn Right about the SSD cover keeping the dust out... but Wrong about leaving the cover off to keep cooler. Sony says to put the silver cover plate back on to create negative pressure to help with the air flow for better cooling. And aesthetics is something done to see on the OUTSIDE... not on the Inside of something. But believe whatever makes you happy. It's your PS5 that is at risk for getting bricked. Good Luck

A nice addition to this is the performance boost. The larger your SSD the more it will take to fill it and the faster your ps5 will run if it’s not close to full.

Ppl on Twitter made it seem like you have to have a PHD in Engineering to install these ssds and from what you've shown it actually looks easier than installing a Hard drive on Ps4 or Ps3 where you had to also download the latest firmware.

Yeah, I mean it's definitely harder than just plugging something in the back but not by much. I think the biggest thing is to have a list of compatible drives but I expect that to drop with the actual release.

Yes. I ordered a 2tb with heat sink before watching this. And watched this so I know what to do when it arrives. Wish I would’ve bought heat sink separate but very glad I bought it still. This looks as easy as doing my baluga extension and 3tb on my ps4. Thanks very much.

Just upgraded my PS5 today with the heat sink version, no problems so far, seemed simple enough and had no problems so far

To anyone thinking of leaving the metal housing plate off to accommodate heatsinks that come with certain SSDs, don't. Check the dimensions and order a custom heatsink that allows for the plate to be put back after installation of any SSD. SONY officialy states that this plate is there for a very good reason, and must be left on whether you use a SSD or not. Anyone that doesn't, is risking the integrity of their console and the SSD installed.

Great video mate. Not planning to upgrade my digital though. The on board storage is more than enough for me, at least for now. I usually delete games that i finish so, overall, no need an extra storage boost
I saw a sale today so I've been going through these videos and this is the first one that's doing a actual comparison on console instead of PC and doing a load time comparison.
Just installed my SSD today. Thank you so much. One thing to mention, removing that screw can be a pain due to being easily stripped. So make sure to have a 3.5mm screwdriver to remove the screw with spacer. Amazon has em for cheap. Thanks SpawnPoiint!! You’re the man!!
Your amazing, thanks for informative video. The most "complicated" aspect of the entire process is simply buying the right product, but even then it's easy to just ask around for the best ssd that work fine

Seriously. The SN850 2TB is crazy expensive in the USA without the heatsink but the speed is glorious. They should hook you up with a 4TB version in the future.

Technically its external storage thats inside, so its a little more difficult than last gen consoles but its nice that it is stored within

Great video. Really well detailed. Appreciate the installation. Am happy with my main storage for now but I do have an external hard drive of 4TB which I bought like 9 or 10 months ago, way before they release that software update allowing us to install another internal SSD.
I have been looking for an internal SSD in the sale. Am most likely to buy a Seagate FireCuda 530 or a Samsung 980 Pro with heatsink, either one with 2TB.

it is quite a differenece in price if you buy it with or without heatsink. Just bought the same one in Germany for about 100 € without the heatsink. For heatsink I had to pay about 8 €. However for the ssd with integrated heatsink I would have payed 60 € more.

NAND prices are going up, not falling. Drives will either stay where they are or go up when prices catch up.
the longer you wait the higher the price, I suggest you to buy the SSD asap and just wait until the final software is released.

Since there's really not that many PS5 games readily available right now, I think I'll wait to do this, but I will absolutely upgrade the storage in the next year or so when I start to run out of space. :)
The issue is really more so if you've been getting all of the plus games, and if you've been buying/already own PS4 games with PS5 upgrades, and if you've been renting PS5 games then you'll run out of space pretty quickly. Plus capture gallery stuff.
In my case I'd like to get one now, but I'd rather move games back and forth from a $110 5TB drive then pay over $200 to barely get 2 TB.
Yea I’ll wait too since I don’t play a lot of games at once and if I do then I can download them really fast because I have a great internet connection!

Happy to see how easy it is (as usual on PS). Reading stuff lately indeed made it look like this would be incredibly complicated, but that just refers to Sony refusing to make a list of makers/models that do work and not promising anything about any drive. Not the actual installation process itself. Given that it's still in beta I don't really get that aggressive critique.
