Why did you keep the carbon contacts? To insert the PCB way advertisement 🙂? Scrape away some of the mask above the original lines that go to the carbon contacts and solder new lines so it. Trim of the old contacts and there you go. Nice project!
@@ronny332 I don't understand what you mean exactly. No, nothing to do with the PCB Way Ad, they aren't related. When you say "scrape away some of the mask above the original lines", do you mean scrape away on the original motherboard, or the carbon contacts? "Trim off the old contacts" Off what? The motherboard or the carbon flex contacts? The carbon contacts can't be soldered to. The only way to connect the carbon contacts to the motherboard (or anything) is by terminating them at a circuit board with carbon pads.
@@RestoreTechnique Timestamp 5:02 You are clamping the contacts instead of soldering them. You can easily scrape away some of the mask from the flex cable and solder to it 🙂would reduce the whole step from clamping and fixating it with tape to a few solder points. Anyway, the result of the whole project is awesome. Jaw dropping 🙂
@@ronny332You can't solder to the carbon traces. They are not wires. They are not copper. They are carbon traces made with carbon particles and glue, deposited onto the plastic film. The traces run to the carbon contact buttons, which are the same material as the traces. Hence the elaborate work around. Cheers! 😊 👍
@@RestoreTechnique the flex cable itself. It works. I did it multiple times. They are the same as flex cables in mobile phones. Scrape away the plastic mask to get to the metal part, put flux on it and solder carefully without too much heat to it. Even when you scape away the carbon you can solder so the metal beneath it. The only issue is the melting plastic.

Wait, hang on... You went to PCBWay in order to print pieces that would withstand heat... But then you went back and printed internal parts yourself? 🤔 Are we sure that's not what caused the cracking
@@raphaeltoast No the cracking of the plastic was from the thread locker. It destroys ABS plastic. Yeah, I printed the main internal part myself cause the material I chose was too flexible.
