  • Today is finally the day that we can upgrade the PS5's internal storage using the Gen 4 NVMe drives along with the beta firmware that Sony has released. I'll be installing a drive along with a third party heatsink to show how it is done and run through the setup on the system itself.

FYI: For those who is getting a heatsink separately to install onto your NVMe M.2 ssd, don’t buy the ones that come with a rubber band because 1.. they’re not good for heat dissipation and 2.. they’ll wear out really quick and snap inside the ssd bay. You’ve been warned! 🤷🏻‍♂️⚠️⚠️⚠️

Sabrent actually made their heatsink in the way you described. You get a thermal pad to stick to the SDD and then the heatsink is literally a replacement of the cover you need to put back on. The reviews I've seen said it works really well. Plus you don't necessarily have to buy the Sabrent SSD as the cover they made is compatible with any M2 that fits [but hast to have no heat sink].

I use a Samsung 1tb 970 evo as the main storage for my PC with no extra heatsink attached to it without any problems. The stickers that come attached to the ssd by default are made of metal and act as mini heatsinks.

Not sure I agree that it would have been a good idea for Sony to install a heatsink option on the M.2 cover. While there are standard form factors for the size of the M.2 drives, not every manufacturer sticks as close to those form factors as Samsung or other high quality brands. Letting the end user handle finding a heatsink option not only allows for those irregularities to be overcome, bit it's also cheaper for Sony, both in manufacturing and design costs. Also, as you mentioned, some drives come with heatsinks already attached, and those obviously wouldn't be usable if Sony preinstalled one.

It might have been worth mentioning the compression tech used in the PS5 which makes games smaller than the competition and causes you to be able to fit more games on the PS5 in comparison.
Because if this I doubt I will be getting an ssd anytime soon.
If you noticed the ssd getting hotter pretty fast with the cover removed, that's because the system uses negative pressure to keep the ssd bay cool and you need the ssd cover and the console side panel on for that to work.

I watched a video that tested a 980 pro without a heat sink, with a small one (cheap, £10/$15) and with one so large (not as cheap £20/$25) you couldn't put the cover on, the conclusion was you need a heat sink (it worked without but it was a lot hotter, would cause deterioration over time) and the results of the small heat sink + cover and large heatsink without the cover where practically the same.
This is due to the negative pressure cooling being in affect for the small one but not the large one, so a small cheap heatsink will be more than enough with the cover on.
