I think people testing the autofocus on the Sony system camera needs to put it into Responsive instead of Standard. Standard has a built-in intentional delay so things coming into the frame by accident doesn't get focused on. This is very true with those 'pop into frame' test. My A7r4 grabs focus on small fast flying rice thrown at brides and grooms at weddings when set to responsive, but doesnt when set to standard, as an example if this behaviour.
I'm trying my best to create a boycott Panasonic movement!. My critisims to follow are not aimed at any context creator and I appreciate they have all got to where they are through hard work etc!. That being said when I first saw videos of this camera an hour ago I thought great ideal camera then I found out Panasonic has allowed all content creators who have made videos like this and all the others released today to keep the camera and lens!! Unlike Sony who required all A7S3 units to be returned by all creators! Out of principal I will now not be buying any Panasonic products ever again. Why should I pay money for their products when they just happily hand out 100s or eve. 1000s for free! No sorry it's anti consumer and an insult to hard working consumers, and that is why don't doesn't do it, I was told that by a sony employee directly, they know it angers and alienates customers so they don't give products for free for reviews! Shame on Panasonic absolutely unacceptable. Just to reinforce good on the content creators I don't blame them at all it's the fault of panasonic, the creators didn't ask for free cameras Panasonic offered it! Anti consumer I'll now wait save my money and invest in a Sony A7S because I'll know my money isn't just used to give free stuff to 1000s of people!

It now appears they are sending select content creators free camera kits which is even worse because they are picking favourites and alienating customers by making them pay and saying oh ya you pay but we're going to throw out tones of free cameras to select people!. Just want to be super clear all my critisim is firmly leveled directly at Panasonic not any creators! Such a bad look for panasonic, Sony just looks more classy and pro consumer!. Giving hard working content creators the opportunity to get early access to the A7S3 to make their videos but then need to return the camera same for canon!. But oh no Panasonic just dishing out free gear to their special favourite people sod all other hard working channels and loyal customers! :). Looks like I'm buying the sony A7S3 then 🤣🤣👍

Sony (and every other brand lol) have people called brand ambassadors ... THOUSANDS of them, that they give free gear to regularly... you know this right? lol my friend is a Sony brand ambassador and hasn't paid for gear since 2018. So if you don't like Panasonic just say that but dont use "giving away product to influencers" as an excuse.
@@TeabaggEditing Not that easy. Greys are magenta while skins are more green/yellow. If you wanna pull back the skin ur greys become even more magenta. If you try to make grey neutral ur skin basically green. Its needs a proper LUT to fix that. Which shouldnt be a problem to get very soon
GREAT JOB! I’m really impressed with the S5 in APS-C mode. If Panasonic can tweak the Autofocus Speed in Full Frame that would be perfect. This was the most informative testing I’ve seen so far. The direct comparison was awesome! Thx 🙏🏾
Wow, really surprised at how well the s5's AF is in APS-C Mode! It was keeping up with Sony and exceeding it most of the time! But the S5 IBIS more than makes up for the sometimes shifty FF AF!

Good question... I mean both have their places, if you want that 4k 120 and a even a bit better af I´d take the a7s3 but for the most part the s5 should do the job just fine and the 1.5 you safe are maybe better invested in glass rather than a lil bit better spec
Exactly. Considering purchasing a wide angle lens and still be at or below the Sony cost. Haven't made my final decision yet...but because of my work and clients, Sony is still in the running :)

What I notice about comparisons with Sony cameras is how much nicer the highlight roll off is on the Panasonic. The image is a just a lot more 'pleasing'. Have a look at the hotpots on your face on the outdoor test. It's one of the reasons I use a GH5, the great image quality. The af for the S5 is better but not reliable which for most equals unusable for when you need it. This camera is not enough to for an expensive crossgrade from a heavy investment in MFT for me personally. Thanks for the video.

Great job on testing the S5 and comparing it to the A7iii camera. I've seen S5 footage with particular AF settings that improved the response time in 24p. As with any AF system, the settings for AF are just as important. As you show, and as I've seen from others, the S5's AF works better at 60fps. As a film maker, I don't rely on autofocus as often as your average vlogger. To be honest, if you're a vlogger and most of your videos are just walk-n-talks where you're a consistent distance from the camera, you really don't need AF that often if at all. Unless you're occasionally holding up an object in front of you as you demonstrate in this video. Personally, I've already ordered the S5. Considering the improvements, and having shot a feature film with the GH5, I think the S5 will serve me well in my films.
What autofocus settings did you have on the Sony. When you constantly mention the speed difference between the two, seems like you should have stated whether the sony was on responsive or normal...etc. Great test effort,, but I can't conclude much from them because of this missing info.
agreed, I have a sony a7iii as well, but the focus setting seem to be set to slow on the sony from the video? not sure, but just my impression! my sony is usually way quicker than what he got on this test!!!!
Come on don't be harsh on him. If he had set sony on responsive mode, he will not recieve any cameras from Panasonic going forward. Watch tony Chelsea video, thats not a sponsored video, they nailed it

@@froznfire9531 If you are testing how fast and good the autofocus system on two cameras are why wouldn't you use the fastest possible setting on both cameras?
AF performance drastically improves at 60fps with DfD because of faster sampling and more frames. With the GH6 they need to give us a native 4K 48fps mode, shoot at 360 degree shutter, and in post drop it into a native 24fps timeline, dropping every other frame. The 360 degree shutter angle will give you 1/48 of a second shutter speed which is perfect for a 24fps video...make it happen Panasonic!
I guess we will see these improvements not in the current cameras, this will be for the new GH6. No one would buy the GH6, if these improvements are in the G9/GH5.
@@ruhri0411 The only benefit of DFD is that it's entirely software based, so if Panasonic wanted, they could probably put these updates into idk a GH1 or something if the processing capabilities are enough. Just hoping for a day Panasonic wakes up and use hybrid AF. Good powerful cameras, but almost impossible to use for solo hybrid shooters doing sports work.
Thanks for a very detailed comparison. Looks like Panasonic have made major improvements with their DFD AF system. I hope it filters down to the M43 line but processing power on those bodies may limit this. We'll find out. The S5 looks like a great hybrid camera.
Which autofocus settings did you use: 1-area (with or without human/animal tracking)? 1-area+(with or without human/animal tracking)? Zone? Vertical/Horizontal? 225-area? Tracking? Human Detect? There are quite a few options! Just curious which one you used in your test.
I almost got a G9 but the full frame system of the S5 changed my mind. Very happy with it. Both are exceptional cameras for video. Came from a sony rx100m4!!
@@georgeanton film makers use manual focus, they want control when and how much is in in focus. Watch the joker movie und you will see what i mean, they used the focus in a very artistic way and the movie would not be the same if they had used af , no matter how good the af system might be . Just watch the movie and see how they did it, you will nver talk about af again.
The IBIS is a big deal and something Sony shooters were always jealous of the GH5. I wish you gave more time to discuss that, but the S5 IBIS looks much better than Sony.
Is there also a panasonic S5 vs Canon R6 video coming? I am in between these 2 atm. Main worry is the overheating on the R6, and if you can do a normal video shoot with it without worrying that it overheats. (also the DR of the R6 )
Hi Max, it would be very interesting to see one of your great resolution tests with the S5 vs other 4K full frame options. I have yet to find info on whether it over samples, etc. for the full frame image. Looking forward to your next vid!
Great job Max! Great job Panasonic. Now imagine Panasonic did this improvement for their initial S1, S1R, SH1. I don't expect the G9 GH5 to get this AF via firmware... but it would be awesome if Panasonic did. The S5 seems to have a magenta tint, compared to a greenish Sony. Not sure which is more accurate on that point. Max, how was the light in the room? Was ir more on the warm or cool side?
Max I was considering purchasing the Sony A7Siii, but the specs looked good on the S5. I want to use a camera only for music videos in the future when I get better. What is the difference between Full Frame and APS-C mode? It seemed like the 4K 24fps was much better for what I would be doing in the APS-C mode? Thank you for the great video!

Dear Max, thank you very much for your very informatif video. I have just one question. Why is the color of the S5 videos so poor, why is the image so red in comparison to the A7? Because the AF is better in APS-C mode on the S5. Would have much preferred more testing in FF. If you want an APS-C camera, you could just buy one and save some money.
Soooooo what im getting is, the AF in the s5 is greatly improved and this is the production model, and to have somewhat of a consistent look with AF APS-C mode (for now) is best..I bought a G95 earlier this year and I love it, Might have to sell it , do some saving and pick this up for the holidays! thanks for the thorough video!!!
Awesome test, Max. The S5 is world's better than before---very good. Awesome even. Do you think this will do well in AF in a talking head video? This camera has so many fantastic features and such a beautiful image, skin tones, and colour. I've already put mine on order. You didn't test this, but the Pani skin tones and color looks a lot better---more complimentary. In the tests that gave the S5 the tougher time---was the S5 shooting 10 bit 422---or were they both matched: 8 bit 420?

@@farren7254 Hey, didn't Sigma even get an update? Because I consider getting the 28-70 or maybe even 24-70 but I am not sure about AF. Will use it for 70% videos (DJ-mixes and talks) and 30% photos.
Thank you for jumping right in the most concerned feature we care about without other unnecessary stuff!! Good to know AFC in apsc crope works well. Hopefully they will bring the same improved algorithms to S1 in the later said firmware updates. Now they just need to unlock the AFC for MC-21 users using EF mount lenses. We need our EF lenses to perform the same via adapters. There is no way i would waste on lenses that i can't use on other systems.
This is my same use case - S1 with MC-21. On DPReview’s S5 video, they mentioned at the end that there’s a firmware update coming for the S1 to give it the same performance as the S5. Very exciting stuff! What I remember reading about at launch, though, is that the L mount by design just doesn’t allow for adapted lenses to have AFC. That has always bugged me because there’s no way I’m giving up my EF lenses.. regardless of how great the L mount lenses are
SEmilio Sigh. I need my canon&sigms EF mount lenses to AFC at that BASIC levels just like when they are mounted on Nikon , Sony and fuji via adapters. I simply cannot afford to invest L-mount lenses as they dont work on other systems. And values of Panny’s s series lenses drop rediculously fast. Good for people who could wait longer. Im glad i got it early this year for 1700 that comes with free mc-21 & v-log. But i know someone he got s1+ 24-105 kit lens for only 1900! Anyway, i believe i would stick around until the firmware comes out as i dont have extra funds to make any system switching. Lol
S5 is looking much better than I thought it would. Shame about the EVF but the GH4 EVF wasn't bad at the same 2.5 Mil so it should suffice. It'll be a dope Christmas gift to myself. Thx for the test Max.
Would love to see this pushed into the GH5 via a firmware update. But I suspect it needs a faster processor. Plus, they need something to entice people to buy the GH6 when/if that comes out. So I doubt we'll see it in the GH5.
Yeah. Pretty sure the S5 will fall apart in real world situations. Such a pity. Powerful camera but only usable in full manual. They should just start packaging these cameras in boxes like the Z-cam and sell it as cinema cameras and give up on developing autofocus. *Before anyone comes in to say "all pro videographers should be shooting manual" yeah, go try shooting sports at f/2.8 or f/1.8 and nail focus manually. With photo lenses. And no I can't buy cine lenses. I'm shooting photos/videos as a 1-man show. Everything needs to happen in 1 body, 1 system.
Honestly, we're comparing a camera that came out years ago with one that came out a few months again. The absolute minimum criteria should be that the S5 is at least 3 years better than the A73. Even parity isnt good enough. It should be an absolute demolition in favour of the S5 for it to be a good result in my humble oppinion.
In those AF tests for example in Vlog, you should try with sunglasses, because many times in vacations you do were them. i noticed lot of change AF while wearing glasses

James Theo you’ll be ok but the Vega 48 definitely speeds up playback and makes it smoother if working with luts and such. I recommended people to buy it but the new 8 core i7 5500XT is a killer value.
This sold me on the S5. I was weighing with the R6, which has better AF (right?) but an overheating problem. This AF is just fine. I am very likely going to buy this next.

Since then firmware has been updated. S5 firmware is on 2.3 now. Not checked Sony yet. Do you have a test planned for new firmware? I know 2.0 improved focus, but 2.3 added Blackmagic Raw and more.
Great video, looks good autofocus especially in aps-c 60fps even 24fps. But how does it work at low lights? the final version of the firmware is much better in full frame? can you publish some examples in low lights and with the new firmware? thanks. Its a nice review, but S5 corners look reddish, is this a camera bug, or something else? What about controls via WiFi or Bluetooth? Is there any lens (upon release) with O.I.S. ?

Or the Sony doesn't look peach like the Panasonic.
The Sony actually looks more natural. It's typically the Sony's color science that is more magenta. But in this case that s5 looks straight up pink.

Dual IS while walking in full frame 24fps was very usable. Sony's footage was totally shaky cam. Hard decision since both are great.
Did you made a decision? I would bet for lumix :P 4k 60FPS, good AF, amaing IBIS, better colors.

I just got an S5 and I was very unhappy with the focus at night. I was thinking of sending it back and getting a7iii but maybe not after seeing this.
You should do a Panasonic S5 update after the firmware to see if the Auto Focus is any better!

We will release a full-frame camera, but it will work well only as a crop (c) Panasonic
Well, you could use it as a full-frame camera for stills and an aps-c camera for video I guess.

Just hoping for a day Panasonic wakes up and use hybrid AF. Good powerful cameras, but almost impossible to use for solo hybrid shooters doing sports work.

Which autofocus settings did you use: 1-area (with or without human/animal tracking)? 1-area+(with or without human/animal tracking)? Zone? Vertical/Horizontal? 225-area? Tracking? Human Detect?

I almost got a G9 but the full frame system of the S5 changed my mind. Very happy with it. Both are exceptional cameras for video. Came from a sony rx100m4!!

Bro, have to use minimum 80mm lens with eye tracking for the test, moving faces with max depth of field AND COMPLICATED BACKGROUNDS

@@georgeanton film makers use manual focus, they want control when and how much is in in focus. Watch the joker movie und you will see what i mean, they used the focus in a very artistic way and the movie would not be the same if they had used af , no matter how good the af system might be . Just watch the movie and see how they did it, you will nver talk about af again.

The IBIS is a big deal and something Sony shooters were always jealous of the GH5. I wish you gave more time to discuss that, but the S5 IBIS looks much better than Sony.

Is there also a panasonic S5 vs Canon R6 video coming? I am in between these 2 atm. Main worry is the overheating on the R6, and if you can do a normal video shoot with it without worrying that it overheats. (also the DR of the R6 )
The R6 will blow the S5 out of the water. You saw that the only reliable AF from this camera was in APS-C crop mode!

Hi Max, it would be very interesting to see one of your great resolution tests with the S5 vs other 4K full frame options. I have yet to find info on whether it over samples, etc. for the full frame image. Looking forward to your next vid!

I don’t get why you used the apsc mode if one of the greates things about the S5 is that it is Full Frame
Because the AF is better in APS-C mode on the S5. Would have much preferred more testing in FF. If you want an APS-C camera, you could just buy one and save some money.

Soooooo what im getting is, the AF in the s5 is greatly improved and this is the production model, and to have somewhat of a consistent look with AF APS-C mode (for now) is best..I bought a G95 earlier this year and I love it, Might have to sell it , do some saving and pick this up for the holidays! thanks for the thorough video!!!

This camera has so many fantastic features and such a beautiful image, skin tones, and colour.
I've already put mine on order.
You didn't test this, but the Pani skin tones and color looks a lot better---more complimentary.
In the tests that gave the S5 the tougher time---was the S5 shooting 10 bit 422---or were they both matched: 8 bit 420?
So in APSC mode, it does a great job with AF because its a 1:1 readout and it doesn't need to do any extra processing for oversampling 6K to 4K ?

That's an excellent test, thank you! I'm curious how well or badly the S5 would perform with Leica or Sigma glass, since they are supposedly not supported for DFD focusing.
They support DFD just as well as native Panasonic lenses.

Thank you for jumping right in the most concerned feature we care about without other unnecessary stuff!! Good to know AFC in apsc crope works well. Hopefully they will bring the same improved algorithms to S1 in the later said firmware updates. Now they just need to unlock the AFC for MC-21 users using EF mount lenses. We need our EF lenses to perform the same via adapters. There is no way i would waste on lenses that i can't use on other systems.
This is my same use case - S1 with MC-21. On DPReview’s S5 video, they mentioned at the end that there’s a firmware update coming for the S1 to give it the same performance as the S5. Very exciting stuff! What I remember reading about at launch, though, is that the L mount by design just doesn’t allow for adapted lenses to have AFC. That has always bugged me because there’s no way I’m giving up my EF lenses.. regardless of how great the L mount lenses are
SEmilio Sigh. I need my canon&sigms EF mount lenses to AFC at that BASIC levels just like when they are mounted on Nikon , Sony and fuji via adapters. I simply cannot afford to invest L-mount lenses as they dont work on other systems. And values of Panny’s s series lenses drop rediculously fast. Good for people who could wait longer. Im glad i got it early this year for 1700 that comes with free mc-21 & v-log. But i know someone he got s1+ 24-105 kit lens for only 1900! Anyway, i believe i would stick around until the firmware comes out as i dont have extra funds to make any system switching. Lol

S5 is looking much better than I thought it would. Shame about the EVF but the GH4 EVF wasn't bad at the same 2.5 Mil so it should suffice. It'll be a dope Christmas gift to myself. Thx for the test Max.

Hey Max, did you manage to get your hands on the S5 recently? Has it improved?
Would love to see this pushed into the GH5 via a firmware update. But I suspect it needs a faster processor. Plus, they need something to entice people to buy the GH6 when/if that comes out. So I doubt we'll see it in the GH5.

Yeah. Pretty sure the S5 will fall apart in real world situations. Such a pity. Powerful camera but only usable in full manual.
They should just start packaging these cameras in boxes like the Z-cam and sell it as cinema cameras and give up on developing autofocus.

yeah, go try shooting sports at f/2.8 or f/1.8 and nail focus manually. With photo lenses.
And no I can't buy cine lenses. I'm shooting photos/videos as a 1-man show. Everything needs to happen in 1 body, 1 system.

Honestly, we're comparing a camera that came out years ago with one that came out a few months again. The absolute minimum criteria should be that the S5 is at least 3 years better than the A73. Even parity isnt good enough. It should be an absolute demolition in favour of the S5 for it to be a good result in my humble oppinion.

In those AF tests for example in Vlog, you should try with sunglasses, because many times in vacations you do were them. i noticed lot of change AF while wearing glasses

James Theo you’ll be ok but the Vega 48 definitely speeds up playback and makes it smoother if working with luts and such. I recommended people to buy it but the new 8 core i7 5500XT is a killer value.
This sold me on the S5. I was weighing with the R6, which has better AF (right?) but an overheating problem. This AF is just fine. I am very likely going to buy this next.

Since then firmware has been updated. S5 firmware is on 2.3 now. Not checked Sony yet. Do you have a test planned for new firmware? I know 2.0 improved focus, but 2.3 added Blackmagic Raw and more.
Great video, looks good autofocus especially in aps-c 60fps even 24fps. But how does it work at low lights? the final version of the firmware is much better in full frame? can you publish some examples in low lights and with the new firmware? thanks. Its a nice review, but S5 corners look reddish, is this a camera bug, or something else? What about controls via WiFi or Bluetooth? Is there any lens (upon release) with O.I.S. ?
