Easily Lumix... but I am defiantly a fanboy. Sony's have overheated on me in the past and it really screwed me. Scared for life. That's the biggest advantage of the S52 over the A74. The Fan. The A74 WILL over heat on you at some point. You won't know when or where... it will just happen. The Lumix fan will save your A$$.
How is the Sony good in the low light 3:40 when it is so dark? Looks to me as though the Lumix wiped the floor with the Sony in all the low light test.
It is so refreshing to watch a review video with someone acting like a real human being and saying things that make so much sense as well as staying precise and clear. Love your natural vibe! Thanks so much Sam
I have the Sony A7iv and I have recorded up to 70 minutes without stopping and with no over heating problem. I did went into the setting menu and bypass the over heating to high. I am not going to lie, the camera did feel hot but it did great.
I wouldn't mind a camera feeling warm, but hot makes me insecure! Have you ever seen a battery ignite? Not to mention how all the components in the camera are actually scalding hot and not designed for that! the Mark II has a cooling fan. 👍
I have both cameras, and I must say that A7iv has disappointed me many times, even when set to high temperature settings. 1080p 60fps… no problem… but switch that to 4K 60fps and after 17 minutes it’s running super hot… by 22 minutes it can shut down outdoor wedding ceremony during summer you can kiss 4K recording good bye… 8 minutes maybe. My 2nd shooter on monopod using his A7iv … crying during ceremony and speeches, over heating and shutting down during mid ceremony.
Great video Sam. The S5II seems like a great option in the under $2K market. I've been shooting with the A7IV until battery runs out of juice and never got an overheating warning. I live in Miami FL. Although, setting the "bypass high temp warning menu option" is the first thing I do when I unbox any Sony camera for the first time.
Not only is the S5ii the best bang for your buck, it's over all just a superb camera for filmmakers and photographers, top notch quality through and through. Last year I had to decide between Lumix / Sony / Canon, I went with the S5 for V-log and the stabilization and it has completely changed the game for me, I ended up buying 2 of them, such an insane camera. The S5ii will be my wedding film camera, especially for the gimbal work with that beautiful autofocusing system. Amazing review!
Lumix has a great lineup of lenses and sigma also have some lenses for it. Plus, plenty of cinema lenses are now incorporating L Mount. There are plenty of lenses for L Mount.
TRUE !!! The BIGGEST PROBLEM with my SONY A7 IV was that OVERHEATING ISSUES i paid for this camera for a gear that i can count on Not to make me feel worry everytime that i need to bring it to the jobs 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻
Lumix S5II FTW! I'm definitely getting one👌🏻 I'm still using the old G7, and I absolutely love the fact that button and dial layout is identical on these two cameras.
I love the hype Panasonic is getting and glad to hear from all these videos that they’re a company who listens. Really excited for the s5iix i preordered mine and cannot wait to use it. Super helpful thank you for making this!
Open the menu, go to (Setup) → [Auto Pwr OFF Temp.] →[High]. Voila, your issue with the Sony is fixed!! Bro you are really engaging. I watch all your stuff. But they really finna get you about the overheating claim lol. Other than that, keep up the good work. Subscribed
@@chadstarbucks5719 most likely new-to-sony shooters, or people who don't shoot video routinely. a7iv is wildly popular and people are switching systems because of it. Everyone who's been in the sony system for a while knows the first thing you do when you get the camera is set the auto shut off temp to high. This isn't the first video that will have sony users eyes rolling and it wont be the last. Just tryna help.
I have both but concerning the colours me and m photographer buddies find we always have to dial back the greens on the S series (a lot sometimes) Edit: i find some parts of this video slightly biased. As I own both cameras, the overheating on the Sony is a myth. I’ve used it all summer in scorching heat and humidity without a single overheating issue. I once forgot it in my tightly sealed sling bag still recording, went to see a movie and pulled it out of the oven-like bag still running. It’s a simple menu setting. And so far the AF on the Sony is still more reliable and has the extremely good point tracking feature that is immensely useful in hybrid shooting. I love my S5 mark I and ii, but credit where it’s due. Also, the A7iv is awesome for photos. Not saying the S5 ii isn’t good, but the extra pixels do show (also in video). And the Sony does have higher bitrates available (eg 400 mbps in all Intra). It does show in scenes with a lot of movements or particles (but maybe not on TH-cam). That said, if video is your mainstay, the S5 mark ii (I’d wait for the IIx) is better because of its tools and better value as well. However, lens selection is what brought me to go Sony in addition to my s5s.
Enjoyed the video. Have owned Panasonic cameras in the past and if the S5ii came out a year or so ago I probably would have bought it. Having said that, I have owned the Sony A7IV since release and not once has it overheated on me. The time that your camera took to overheat doesn't sound right at all unless if maybe you never changed your heat setting limit to high. It's the first thing I changed when I got the camera and it's been great in that sense.
You're right. That's probably what happened. I have a Sony A7iv, set on high, and has not overheated, but I bought it in December 2022, and it hasn't had the Texas summer heat treatment. Plus, I'm sick of shooting only in 16x9. I want all those Panasonic assist features for video, features like waveforms, spot meter, shutter angle, V-log, vector scope, etc; features that don't even seem to be on Sony's radar all these years. Plus, the S5 is built so, so, so much better than the Sony.
@@avarmadillo Majority of issues you are mentioning are fixable by using an external monitor with all professional tools at your hand on the much better and bigger screen than the integrated one. Shutter angle is just an interpretation of time in the constant manner regardless of the aperture setting and doing it in your mind becomes a second nature once you get used to this workflow.
The video was very unbiased. How can you be so unbiased? I have watched the video many times and it is almost impossible for anyone to guess which camera you are a fan of, especially the conclusion of your video was the most unbiased judgment in the history of camera reviews.
I’ve filmed numerous videos of over an hour continuously with the A7IV, using 4K 10 bit recording to two sd cards simultaneously, and I’ve never had any overheating issues. Having said that, I hope I didn’t jinx myself.
Same experience here. I use mine for wedding speeches and have never had a warning. It’s important to keep the screen flipped out to allow airflow on the back of the camera. That said, I’ve just preordered my S5ii. I started out on Panasonic, and there’s just so much to love about the user experience.
Just an FYI, the a 7IV has two overheat settings. The default setting will shut the camera down just looking at the menus for a few minutes, the other can record video for hours. It’s a known issue, lots of big TH-cams shoot with the A7IV for their main YT camera, like Gerald Undone for example.
I do believe like you mention that you can extract more performance out of the A7IV, but I'm pretty sure that Gerald Undone is using AI's as his A) camera and the A7IV as B). But in reality it doesn't matter, the fact is that you can use either camera today if you know what you're doing and work around their limitations, if anything makes me happy about the whole situation is that Panasonic has listened and is now back in the game. This is great news for everybody, if they keep offering the tools they're offering with that aggressive pricing strategy it'll force other manufacturers to start bringing more to the table because now, they can't use that "oh but Panasonic has terrible AF" excuse any longer. It's great news for the industry and for ourselves :)
I have been using the Sony A7iv for more than 6 months, it doesn’t overheat! I have shot wedding videos on it too. Maybe there is something wrong with the Sony you picked my man
If you set Temperature High in the menu the camera did not overheat more... fore sure also in 4k 60p... I film many speeches under the sun in hot summer season and never had problem. You can also check many others video that show this! I'm agree with you about all the instrument of the lumix in general, good camera, but about over overheating you were not objective! Peace!
Great video! But how do they fare against the moire effect? The A7IV is said to have an AA filter, while the S5IIX does not, which can be a problem for shooting weddings and fashion shows.
Awesome video Sam! Love the Lumix cameras, got the S5 II as my second cam! I would like to say with the over heating, it's not that big of an issue anymore as long as you know what precautions to take. One being the thermal setting on High & Two keeping the back screen open. I've been using the A7 IV for all my weddings in 2023 and it's not over heated once. One wedding in July 2023 was in a conservatory and outside was already 40C. The camera was in front of the window under the sun, filmed in 4K 24fps for just over 30 minutes and no warnings or overheating.
I switched from Panasonic (GH5's) to Sony a year ago (because I wanted decent autofocus and full frame) and I've had the A7iv for most of that time. Never had an overheating issue but I did set the camera to high temp mode straight away. I've made loads of videos I love with the A7iv, all handheld (except the interview bits). Don't regret the move but if the Lumix S5ii had been available when I made the switch I may have stayed with Panasonic. Too late now though. Too heavily into Sony with an A1 on the way. Another great video Sam. Thanks & keep em coming :-).
Good luck being stuck with 16x9 all the time. I hate that on my A74. That's why I'm going back to the S5II, with C4k (DCI) and all those video centric features missing in my Sony. And I don't have to pay a king's ransom for the camera, the lenses, and the media. And no more Slog 3--Yaaaa!!!
My video team has used the IV for a lot of professional work and we have not had any issues. Just set the overheating setting to high and you are good to go. It's not getting as hot (if hot at all) as it was with the III and older crop versions. And I'm talking about capturing an interview for 1,5h in 4k10bit. But nevertheless if my main thing was only video, the new Lumix would be very lucrative to switch. Colours, usability - it's all great. Thank you for the review!
Awesome review. I agree on real world tests and unexpected lighting condition when testing color rendering. Also, the S5 Mark I not having a cooling fan is one of the reasons why it was a nonstarter for me. A camera with a fan can still have problems unrelated to overheating so adding the possibility of overheating into the mix for me is a “no go” situation. I’m glad to see that the Mark II has a cooling fan. 👍
I thought the lumix looked better unfer low light, but im a novice tbf. Really toying with the sony, but id want to record for long periods of time and the over heating seems like it will happen if im recording for long periods. Very frustrating. I was sold on sony getting the iv until now.
What needs to be said and said STRONGLY is that Panasonic / Lumix are a tremendous team of people who listen, improve and are easy to contact. The issues I have with all Sony , from the big ones to little ones is that theres a massive political divide in the company and they're great at new products but hard to get a human to talk to. If the product is good , remember the service and aftercare is wonderful.
I'm not a Sony shooter but I hear this criticism enough that it makes me wary of switching (which I've strongly considered). Not enough support, which does not pair well with their less durable bodies. I hear Panasonic has great service, but I wouldn't know as I've never needed it because their cameras are built like tanks :)

I completely agree. It's still ridiculous that it doesn't record in PAL at 25fps with H265 and the silly answers they give for it... 😪
So you're saying it took 5 years for the message to be delivered to them? People have been complaining about the focus in their cameras since 2018 when the A7III came out. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say "they listen". I think it was more, they were forced to change or they would go out of business b/c they are the lowest market share of all camera producers out there.
We all win. No matter what brand you choose. A competitive market will bring better products to consumers. That technology will eventually trickle down to the cheap shooters like me 🙈 in the end everyone is happy.
Great video - but I still don't understand how people get their a7iv's to overheat that easily using regular framerates. I shoot with an a7iv and a7Siii and both perform just fine in professional settings: Recording TH-cam videos, Speeches at weddings, Livestreaming for businesses. Set the Overheat setting un the menu to high, flip out the screen and that seems to do the trick for me.
Same! I've had the A7iv for over a year now, shooting TH-cam videos multiple times a week, all in 4K, 30+ mins of recording for every video and it NEVER overheated even once!
One my second shoot with the A7IV I was shooting in HVC-S 4K 25p and it gave me an overheating warning only 17 minutes in. It was indoor but I live in a cold country so I was very surprised. Later turned the warning to high and haven't gottten it yet..
@@jakubdudaweddings Depending on the type of work you do, I completely understand. Personally I don't need to record for more than 1 hour in 4k and any super long form content I record in HD to save on file size.
I love that you were very diplomatic… and the Lumix killed it every step of the way. I can confirm the Sony’s overheat terribly for weddings, I’m in many many groups and every other post is “my Sony overheated what do I do” lol
I was an owner of the sony a7iv and it does overheat at the hour mark and shuts down… and this is at 23c room temperature… that’s why i sold it and pre ordering lumix.
In my opinion, as a wedding filmmaker I was a little bit disappointed with the crop in the 4k60. i preferred the 4k60 without crop instead of the 6k30 by far. And people may argue that slow motion is not essential but in some weddings it is essential, and we all know it.
A7IV Sold! Picking up my S5II tomorrow, have been this excited since I get my first mirrorless (G7) 6 years ago. Shot Sony for about 3 years, and I never felt inspired to just grab my camera and create, great image quality, but the experience never felt “fun”.
The last year I used the sony a7iv for wedding I'm very happy! But 1 wedding the second camera guy used the gh5 the dinamic range was ok but the color straight of the camera was so nice! Great skin tones .Maybe in the future I have to try panasonic.
It's not about which one is best for u in this contests (if u don't have either camera at all) its about which is best and that's the lumix hands down. The value and the fine noise got me
Showed my age with the Sonic the hedgehog reference, all jokes aside I have learned so much from your channel and appreciate all you do. I'm new so I am just filming darn near everything to learn as much as I can. I have negative followers on my channel, if that is even possible .🤣
Was the a7iv on Temperature High in the settings? This solved it for many people with the overheating. Either way I’m switching from Sony to Panasonic, I really love the colors from the s5ii. They look so much more natural 😊
Agree 100%, plus all the other features for video that don't seem to exist on any Sony radar, no matter how expensive the camera may be. Plus, V-log!!! The easiest to grade log file of any I know. Maybe Fuji Flog is close.
I don't really agree, I've had the Sony A7IV for a year now and I've also made a 2 hour movie of a theater piece where the camera was shooting continuously with an external power supply. And no overheating from the moment we put the right settings. But it's true that the stabilization of the Lumix has an effect on me.
Tell me you didn’t turn the auto power off temp setting to high without telling me you didn’t turn the auto power off temp setting to high. Also might want to check your firmware version. There have been a couple new ones to come out in the last year for the sony.
Yeah, you nailed the point. I switched from Sony to Fuji because of overheating issues - IN THE STUDIO. The A1 could not record more than about 25min of 8k. The Fuji X-H2 does 2 hours with no problem, and the qualitiy is about 98% there. Almost Nobody talks about that! Just got the Lumix as well to have at least one fullframe cam. Great review!
Been using the S5 for a while now and i'm loving it, minus some tiny issues with focus. But with S5ii now, can't wait to get my hands on one. Was a very good comparison between the Sony and Lumix :)
Same! I love my S5, and currently have a lot of vintage glass where AF isn't an issue... although the EVF in the new body will also be welcomed for manual focus! I find the S5 EVF is difficult sometimes if not using the manual focus zoom in.
Sam.. we would love to watch some videos about the lens selection to get the advantage of the AF. That’s really a thing when comparing to Sony. Please make a video, if possible. Btw I heard sigma 24-70 f/2.8 is a good one. I am a videographer using Fujifilm XT4.
Lumix for the win! - But you Should update with the Lumix S5iiX because it's geared more for video than this one. Plus there has been firmware updates which are staggeringly good
Great video. Thank you. I noticed when you were sliding the RODE box around the screen for the tracking, the rolling shutter was terrible. That was just a box. I really want to grab the Panasonic, but I shoot a lot of kids parties and quite often the kids are moving through the frame rather quickly. I think this was an oversight of your review and should be noted. Just my opinion.
Great review again! I just miss some stills comparasion. Since we're talking about hybrid cameras I assume it's also important spect of a camera. As a lumix user, I really miss the fast switch between videos and photos. I also dont like colors in terms of color grading science on Lumix system. I wish someone could just include a stills part into the comparasion. Maybe also some side by side color grading in lightroom ect.
this was fascinating, and finally a comparison video that well, where you don't just sit on the fence! that's refreshing! yeah i've been shooting with my S5 for over a year now, still love it, i will be getting the S5IIx when that ships later this spring. I think you are spot on with the colors. I just don't have to do much with the S5 when i get in the neighborhood of the correct exposure.
If you go into the settings menu on the Sony A7IV, you can switch on the high setting so the camera won't shut off and keep on recording! You could do the same thing on the A7III, but it did have a 30 minutes record limit. It is still pretty awesome that the S5ii works straight out of the box!!
I have the a7iv, filmed a wedding with it in the hot summer and it didn't overheat. It was uncomfortably hot but didn't stop. That being said, I'll buy an s5ii to pair with it. The Sony will be primary for stills, the Panny primary for video, because I'm constantly anxious about the heat. It will still be cheaper than an a7rv even with a nice lens (the a7siii doesn't have enough megapixels for my needs) and I much prefer the APSC crop instead of pixel binning in 60p which is still cropped lmao.
I borrowed my friends lumix camera and shot continuous 4k video and was pleasantly pleased that even with a mid value SD card the camera captured everything without freezing
Two things: - Lumix have better 1080p. For some reason Sony 1080p doesn't look well - The S5II have a reddish magenta look to human skin color. That's a problem
Very informative video! I've been deciding between these two cameras for videography work. I currently use a Black magic 6k pro (BMPCC6KPro) and i cant deal with not having Auto-Focus anymore in the "Run and Gun" situations I've found myself in so often nowadays. the lumix being directed towards video on top of being a good chunk cheaper than my current camera is really making me consider it for trade in. plus i could work with the lumix on a gimbal with way less hassle.
I knew it!!! Panasonic S5 M2 is greater!!! Last two years this is what I am saying about S5 m1... best FF camera price/value... now with S5M2 it is undeniable!!
Thank you for your video Sam - I just came across it in a search. Been looking at the S52 for a while now.. mostly a stills shooter but looking to expand my videography. Right now it looks like the S52 is one of the only true hybrid's on the market today - and I'm sure firmware updates will make it even better!
Shame about the rolling shutter. ☹️ The only camera that offers it all at a reasonable price for hybrid video is the Fujifilm X-H2S. It runs rings around cameras within its price range.
Just stumbled on your channel and dig your content. But saying the Sony isn’t capable of being a professional camera is a mistake. I work for a Fortune 500 company tasked with filming the President of the company. I elect to use my own gear and have been filming long form content for him with an A7III and then the A7IV when I upgrade. I’m literally a video professional shooting 4k 10bit with the A7IV without any issue. Day one I switched the temp setting to high and have never had my camera shut off on me. Not once. Keep up the good work though! Really enjoyed your video overall.
Got my S5iix (upgraded from A7iii) and I am so much relieved about the colors not being correct! Sony always had weird color science and hence had to get rid of all my sony gear and got my self lumix. The color science is very similar to nikon, which I love the most.
Great comparison Sam! Clear to me from watching countless videos over the last few days the S5II seems to be the better package. I don't want to deal with workarounds and potential heat issues whilst filming weddings. Especially after the 40° days we had this year! I'll be getting an S5II this year I reckon!
then buy an FX3, problem solved. Here is the thing, if you have been using Panasonic the whole time, you are looking for validation, and this is giving it to you, but if your invested in Sony glass already then it makes zero sense to switch to the Panasonic. My bet is you are already invested in the Panasonic eco-system.
@@PrestonGladd Not sure its validation because Panasonic's best autofocus is now on its cheapest cinema camera. On one hand, It can frustrating for GH6, SH1, users. On the other hand if you are in Panasonic you are already used to the focus limitations.
This is an honest review I soon found out myself, Always this one question how long can I film until it fails me? And then it turns out with the Sony A7IV you don't know when, but it will definitely fail even with the dust caps open! And then my second question, how long after overheating is it ready again! I've been lucky enough to be mistrustful and not, like my Nikon, stuck with a bunch of lenses and cameras that no one wants anymore. I'm definitely going for the Panasonic.
I know this is an older video now, but I just shot a short film in Sweden with the S5 II, in the middle of summer... and a lot of it was in 4k 60 or 6K open gate, and I never even thought about the overheating thing... and yeah I know people are going to say "Yeah but Sweden is cold" - well, it wasn't that day, the sun never sets and it was like 28° air temperature the whole time... I'd have been livid if a $5000 Sony set up (camera and lens) failed, which it sounds like it would have.
nobody's talking about the fact that LOG is a compressed format that tries to squish more dynamic range into same bandwidth (same bitrate video) - So there are bound to be trade-offs, like noise, less color resolution, etc compared to if you just recorded in standard profile and used ALL bandwidth to encode just those colors! With 10-bit log footage I can see that some guys manage to eek out a decently colorful image, but with most it will be inferior for clarity of colors, subtle nuances of color (color tone resolution), etc - the only plus is retained dynamic range
Years back everyone used to say the same thing about 8-bit and 10-bit was the solution at the time. Now what? Let's all shoot only 12-bit raw to anyways get compressed when uploading to any platform and seen in a 6inch screen.
So glad to see that I am not the only one thinking that the Sony A7 IV has a weird color for the blue skies. I own the A7 IV and the S5 and color wise is a clear win for the Lumix.
@@ahamedriyaz8657 now I use Slog3 and generally I apply the Leeming LUTs so the colors look better. I used to shoot in Hlg3 but I was not happy with the results, mostly the sky color.
In a comparison from The Hybrid Shooter, the Lumix image has a more teal sky and the Sony looks better: th-cam.com/video/PMYEC1v2sBw/w-d-xo.html Maybe it's a matter of profiles and conversion (from RAW or LOG) and not the cameras themselves?
It’s bad experience for me about overheat and then my Sony camera shutdown while shooting 4k video. In my case, I use Sony ZV-E10 to shoot video 4K 24fps outdoor just only 16-17 minutes like your case. Finally, thanks for your clip. This is one of best comparison between A7iv and S5ii.
After watching and reading a lot of sony a7IV reviews, I notice the overheating really is difference between all a7IV camera's. I've heard people having it overheat after 10 minutes, and some never overheated after 2 hours continuous filming. Even in studio sessions.
Which do you think is best for shooting bird and wildlife videos (no photos) with a telephoto lens: (1) Sony FX30, (2) Sony A7IV or (3) Lumix S5ii? Thanks!
LUMIX looks great it really does but I think you may of had it in for the A7IV in this video. On high my A7IV has never overheated even when recording for an hour. I’m tempted by the SIIX myself but some of these lumix vs sony videos are a little misleading.
You need to turn on the over heat warning in the menu, Turin it to high. I have 2 a7iv and a fx3 for my wedding business, and the a7ivs have been out in the mid day Australian sun (35 + degrees) recording 10 bit slog 3 25fps 4K and for over 50mins and no issues, I do open all of the battery doors and sd card doors ect,
I"ve read that to solve sony's overheating issue you have to change shut off temp AND use fast SD card V90 standard complient or CFast. That solves overheating. I have mine on the way so I'll check
Sam hey, before I watch your video I already know the A7IV is a superior camera but you are going to spend more. That does not mean at all the S5ii is not a good camera because it is a VERY GOOD camera especially for video (nice to see Panasonic is crawling its way back in the video area, who know they might become KING again - an updated better version S5ii is scheduled for release this year) and in terms of the price I am quite sure the S5ii beats down all cameras in it class in terms of price and the lens cost less than Sony full-frame lenses. I think a good comparison would vs FUJI if you have not done that yet. Nice JOB!!!
Which is your favourite??? Let us know :)

Subscribed
Did you see the screen shots in the video? Seems not just this person having the issue. Even Patrick Tomasso A74 overheated in the video with Tyler
Thanks David 🙏🏻🎥
I have both but concerning the colours me and m photographer buddies find we always have to dial back the greens on the S series (a lot sometimes)
Edit: i find some parts of this video slightly biased.
You're not always in a position to use lighting so having a camera with great iso performance is a nice addition just like ibis is a great tool.
The video was very unbiased.
How can you be so unbiased?
I have watched the video many times and it is almost impossible for anyone to guess which camera you are a fan of, especially the conclusion of your video was the most unbiased judgment in the history of camera reviews.
Because it’s an educational video, you are the one who decides which camera is for you.
I have had overheating one time with the A7IV and it was in direct sunlight with temps around 80f.
Overheating is a problem on set when using remote Wi-Fi control for the director's booth.
Your S5II videos have been killer so far, the focus transition video was great too!
Thank you 🤩🎥
Just an FYI, the a 7IV has two overheat settings.
@@avarmadillo Panasonic now looks like a great choice having caught up with autofocus. Enjoy the S5II.
@@avarmadillo what's wrong with 16x9? plenty of room for framing when recording in 4K
Not to mention the DCI, and all those framing and video assist features, like a REAL video camera provides.
This is the type of video I have been looking for. Everyone else skates around the issues. I’m sold on the Panasonic. I will deal with the crop.
I got an a6600 and looking for a new camera. This is a very interesting video for me. Thanks for creating it!
Like the other A7 IV owners here, I've never ever had an overheating issue here either...Just saying..Keep up the good work..
We all win. No matter what brand you choose. A competitive market will bring better products to consumers. That technology will eventually trickle down to the cheap shooters like me 🙈 in the end everyone is happy.
Well said, Nick! (:
@@Aviciiz And thos Lumix camera even has the same setting in the menu that you turn on to avoid overheating.
@@hiawrj I’d be very very surprised if that warning ever came up even with the warning set to low
Agree with everything you said mate, well put!
I love that you were very diplomatic… and the Lumix killed it every step of the way.
I can confirm the Sony’s overheat terribly for weddings, I’m in many many groups and every other post is “my Sony overheated what do I do” lol
Thanks Em. I wish everyone believed that 😂 thanks for watching
Amazing. Stay tuned for the full S5ii setup guide coming tomorrow 🤩🎉🎥
I have the S5, the S5II, and now the S5IIX. So, I can say without a doubt that I am a fan of these cameras!
The last year I used the sony a7iv for wedding I'm very happy! But 1 wedding the second camera guy used the gh5 the dinamic range was ok but the color straight of the camera was so nice! Great skin tones .Maybe in the future I have to try panasonic.
I always said, there is something about Sony color I just don’t like… your video explained why..thank you.
Wow s5 is preordered ! Now what lens!
Thinking 24-105 used at MBP. Then maybe a 35 1.8 😜
Well dang I was fully expecting the S5 II to be slated but that’s interesting! Great video man
Thank you 🙏🏻🎥
It's not about which one is best for u in this contests (if u don't have either camera at all) its about which is best and that's the lumix hands down. The value and the fine noise got me
The Sony A7IV just lost all of its Sonic Rings with just one blow. 😲
😂 sonic rings!!!!!!
I can hear the noise now

Super happy to pick up a discounted S5. I'm feeling confident in investing in the L mount system, as there is a way for an upgrade.
One of the best comparisons I've seen. Fab channel👍👍👍👍
Glad I found this video. I almost bought the Sony a7IV, but now I know how great the Lumix is compared to it. Thanks man.
🙏🏻🎥
I don't really agree, I've had the Sony A7IV for a year now and I've also made a 2 hour movie of a theater piece where the camera was shooting continuously with an external power supply. And no overheating from the moment we put the right settings. But it's true that the stabilization of the Lumix has an effect on me.
Wow, the IBIS on the Lumix with the 24mm looks amazing. Would love to see a comparison of the S5 II and the FX30. Thanks!
Not talking about you Sam, but TH-camrs praised the hell out of the a7 iv when it first came out and now it’s the Panasonic praising days. Arrgggg.
Was the Sony on 4k recording when it overheated after 17 minutes?
Been using the S5 for a while now and i'm loving it, minus some tiny issues with focus. But with S5ii now, can't wait to get my hands on one. Was a very good comparison between the Sony and Lumix :)
Same! I love my S5, and currently have a lot of vintage glass where AF isn't an issue... although the EVF in the new body will also be welcomed for manual focus! I find the S5 EVF is difficult sometimes if not using the manual focus zoom in.
Most filmmakers use manual focus anyways. People need to stop relying on AI
Which lenses do u use with s5
Sam.. we would love to watch some videos about the lens selection to get the advantage of the AF.
Plus there has been firmware updates which are staggeringly good
Already made my mind up getting the S5. Just wish it had bigger lens line up :(
Great review, amazing comparison, I'm blown away about how good Lumix did for their first attempt 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
if you overheat on the sony a7IV just puto the tempo on HIGH, use it with the screen flipped, bought 3 months ago and it is an amazing camera
Turn the Sony overheat temp to High. I’ve filmed 2+ hr interviews with zero issues.
It is still pretty awesome that the S5ii works straight out of the box!!
wont't shut off but my a7iv freeze while taking photo, only 400 photo and freeze, take out battery and put it back shoot about 4-5 photo freeze again.
Two things:
- Lumix have better 1080p. For some reason Sony 1080p doesn't look well
- The S5II have a reddish magenta look to human skin color. That's a problem
The stabilization is absolutely absurd. Definitely interesting 🤔
Just go ahead and listen to your heart. Lumix produces things of beauty.
Right now it looks like the S52 is one of the only true hybrid's on the market today - and I'm sure firmware updates will make it even better!
s5ii win !
i have the s5.. almost perfect.
S5II is the new GH5 of fullframe. absolute banger.
Exactly
Shame about the rolling shutter. ☹️
The only camera that offers it all at a reasonable price for hybrid video is the Fujifilm X-H2S.
🙏🏻
Got my S5iix (upgraded from A7iii) and I am so much relieved about the colors not being correct! Sony always had weird color science and hence had to get rid of all my sony gear and got my self lumix. The color science is very similar to nikon, which I love the most.
Great comparison Sam!
Clear to me from watching countless videos over the last few days the S5II seems to be the better package. I don't want to deal with workarounds and potential heat issues whilst filming weddings. Especially after the 40° days we had this year!
I'll be getting an S5II this year I reckon!
Mostly undercover ads
If you turn temperature on high on the a7iv settings it will have no problem with overheating. Either way the s5ii is the best bang for it's buck
then buy an FX3, problem solved.

Thankyou!!!!! Overheating is a deal breaker.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE INFO ON THE SONY OVERHEATING AT 17 MINUTES!
THAT INFO IS EXTREMELY HELPFUL TO ME AS A CINEMATOGRAPHER.
I saw you in the Lumix USA commercial!
🤩 I’m famous! 😂🎥
If I want to take picture should I choose lumix s5 mark ii ? it color looks better than a74😢😢please give me some advise😅😅
nobody's talking about the fact that LOG is a compressed format that tries to squish more dynamic range into same bandwidth (same bitrate video) - So there are bound to be trade-offs, like noise, less color resolution, etc compared to if you just recorded in standard profile and used ALL bandwidth to encode just those colors!
What profile do you shoot in?
@@ahamedriyaz8657 now I use Slog3 and generally I apply the Leeming LUTs so the colors look better. I used to shoot in Hlg3 but I was not happy with the results, mostly the sky color.
In a comparison from The Hybrid Shooter, the Lumix image has a more teal sky and the Sony looks better: th-cam.com/video/PMYEC1v2sBw/w-d-xo.html
Maybe it's a matter of profiles and conversion (from RAW or LOG) and not the cameras themselves?
Thanks!
This is exactly the video I needed
Thank you I have been looking for this
I hate losing money but yes....gotta sell the 7IV. I've always been a Panny fan boy anyway. I've been waiting for this.
Wow, hot take! But helpful to hear your opinion! Thanks Sam
Thank you very very very much!!! This is what I needed to hear/see. Thank you!
LUMIX looks great it really does but I think you may of had it in for the A7IV in this video. On high my A7IV has never overheated even when recording for an hour. I’m tempted by the SIIX myself but some of these lumix vs sony videos are a little misleading.
Great presentation and style, subscribed!
Great Video.... any possibility of giving your thoughts (or maybe even a video) against the FX30?
You need to turn on the over heat warning in the menu, Turin it to high. I have 2 a7iv and a fx3 for my wedding business, and the a7ivs have been out in the mid day Australian sun (35 + degrees) recording 10 bit slog 3 25fps 4K and for over 50mins and no issues, I do open all of the battery doors and sd card doors ect,
awesome review man! very practical. thanks!
I"ve read that to solve sony's overheating issue you have to change shut off temp AND use fast SD card V90 standard complient or CFast. That solves overheating. I have mine on the way so I'll check
Thanks Sam, I think I will buy the S5ii in a few months time, seems like a cracking all rounder for my needs
great 10mins with good question still keen on S5 mk II for 6K purposes. Thanks Sam.
Thank you for such a pragmatic, rational comparison 👍
🙏🏻 thank you! 🎥
Nice JOB!!!
