Nice video mate, loving the production quality in such early stages of your channel! I was surprised to see you were a smaller channel. You'll go far! I've got the s5 and I absolutely love it. I always wanted a Sony A7s4 or something but right now I'm very happy with the s5.
Thank you! I’ve been super happy with the S5. It does everything I need and I’m sure it’ll be a trusted tool for a long time. You can’t beat the price either.
Nice video, Zack, and I think you made some good points. I would also suggest that people look in to the Panasonic S1 (original model, just in case Panasonic comes out with a MK II of the S1 in the future). While the S1 is bigger and heavier than the S5, and only has a tilt-up / tilt-down screen, it does have a few benefits over the S5. Namely, the S1 has unlimited record time in 4K 10-bit at 24 amd 30fps. It also has 6K at 24 and 30fps, but with a 15-minute time limit. (The S5 has 5K at 30fps using the "6K photo mode", I think with the same 15-minute time limit, but I don't want to swear by that). The S1 has a full-size HDMI port, a better LCD and a better EVF, and slightly better IBIS. Unfortunately, the S1 still has the poor autofocus found in the original S5, as well as the bad HDMI lag. IIRC, the S1 doesn't have the vectorscope and might be lacking that luminance spot meter. Oh, almost forgot: The S1 requires the paid firmware upgrade to unlock things like V-LOG and such. If you are buying used, there might be a good chance that it has it installed already. But doulbe check before buying, as if the camera doesn't have that firmware upgrade, it costs like $200.
I wouldn’t disagree actually. Especially when compared to what a comparable A7IV goes for the S5ii/x is a steal. Although I could still see a case for the S5 if you did more narrative-focused work or needed a b-cam for the S5ii/x.
Dont forget the smaller size of S5...its amazing how much functionality it has. Auto Focus is fine, even in low light. But required setting tweaks as per photo or video guides.
This debate was a tough one for me at a point in time. I needed to upgrade multiple cameras for Event Shooting and coming from multiple GH5 and one Atomos Ninja V. My time to consider upgrading came right before the release of the S5 II. The AF in the S5 II, the consideration that I really needed to buy a few more Ninja V for my workflow alongside with buying the S5 for the cheaper cost. I ended up with 3 - S5 II, 1 - S5 IIX ( and recently bought the S9 for EDC but now also use it also for long form with my Ninja V that was now sitting around 😅). The S5 is a phenomenal Camera and the S5 II is just the icing on the cake.
It's hard to go wrong with any of these cameras. I recently picked up an S5 ii more for my TH-cam stuff and to use as a B-cam to my S5 for multicam shoots. The only thing I dislike about the S5 ii is that the Raw output is a paid upgrade even though it came standard with the original.
For manual vintage lenses ( and not only ) wouldn’t a PD movie auto focus system solve the problem ? I have rigged my S5 with an Atomos Ninja V on top of it, but the auto focus problem isn’t solved yet. Can’t make up my mind between the DJI ( LIDAR ? ) auto focus system or the newest PD Movie system 🤦🏻♂️🤔 Great content! Keep it up 👍🏻
Is it worth shooting in Prores Raw vs shooting h265? I dont see a major difference in quality. I once troed the ninja v with my s5 and the colors in post looked different, after converting to rec 709. Too much saturation and the contrast curve looke weird (i used the same rec 709 lut as usual and tried CST). So i decided its maybe not worth the hussle. But what do you say is it worth for the image quality and did i do something wrong?
Hello nice review, shot in raw 12 bits is better than ALL Intra like the S5IIX ? I have that question , thanks I will buy a used S5 over the S5IIX if the blackmagic raw 12 bits is better than ALL Intra thanks a lot!
Just keep it because the S5 is $1k and the Ninja V is $600. This way makes more sense if you already have the S5 and already need a recording monitor. I have the S5 and went the monitor route and now am staring at the same deal wondering if I sell the S5 + Ninja V now.
by influence like these videos, I brought S5 + 20-60mm + 50mm lens from amazon. But I really failed to understand why there is so much hype? The image quality was bad, grainy, not good color sign. Autofocus is shit, I checked many videos of AF settings but nothing seems worked. I do mobile photography, the quality of S5 is bad compared to my honor Magic 5 Pro. I am confused, Full Frame, super hype but this s5 felted like I was cheated. I returned back and planning to get Sony A7C M2.
If you're planning on buying something else, it probably won't help you anyway if you're able to compare a mobile phone to the Panasonic S5. If you've watched as many videos as you write, you could have noticed before buying that the autofocus is not good in the S5. The rest of what you write are just the words of someone who doesn't understand the settings and relies on auto mode. That's what it sounds like to me.
@@tomefilms3438 There is no rule that we should not compare mobile photography with Full Frame. I am investing money for content creation. I have used pro mode in mobile, aware of aperture, shutter, ISO, etc. I have tried this S5 on both AF and MF, have tried all settings explained on the YT. In my opinion its not worth, the image were bad, I used both 20-60mm and 50mm kit lens. When yo take a picture on normal condition the output should put a smile on your face not forwnie. Hopw you understand.
Since a 600 dollar atomos seems mandatory, you need to factor that into its price. With the worthless af and terrible internal codec options, this needs to be 500 bucks. Add the 600 dollar atomos and you get a 1100 dollar cinema camera that can’t af worth shit but will give you great footage with a little extra work.
Yes if you have very tight budget I would advice to anyone to go s5 ( used ) but otherwise Old AF Panasonic is so chaotic. As long time gh5/s5 shooter. I mastered their chaotic AF even with my skills about it I manage to miss some shots because I was on gimbal etc and sometimes even in good lighting condition, you have no idea why the af just goes retard** mode. I have MF lenses/fd lenses , but When im on gimbal I have to rely on a good AF. I even bought the 85 1.8 lumix instead of 85 1.4 sigma because it was said that lumix 85 1.8 had a better af . All being said I saved to pick the s5II but even if the new AF is finally usable and great , the fact that it still 4k60 crop. made me wait a bit. on maybe a s1h II. Even if , If I saw a S9 used at a good price , I might jump into.
Good AF is definitely very useful for gimbal work. I would probably reconsider going with the S5 if I used gimbals more often. Also, the S35 crop in 4K 60 can definitely be a deal breaker for some. Thanks for your comment!
@@ZacktheFilm right, but saying it’s only 8 bit in the video is a massive difference than 10 bit. 420 and 422 isn’t as big of difference for 90% of people
The s5 has a recording limit only for certain recording modes, specifically h.265. The rest will be unlimited
I didn't realize there was no recording limit in 8 bit. Although since I exclusively shoot 10bit, it's kind of a non-factor for me.
GOOD TO KNOW!!

Totally agree!

Thanks for the info! I would honestly love to pick up an S1 and compare it to the S5. The higher video resolution is compelling to me.
Well Yes, for the right price. Maybe more for photography. But since the s5II/X are pretty cheap (for Full-frame) i would go for the updated camera.
I wouldn’t disagree actually. Especially when compared to what a comparable A7IV goes for the S5ii/x is a steal. Although I could still see a case for the S5 if you did more narrative-focused work or needed a b-cam for the S5ii/x.

90-degree micro HDMI cable?
Smallrig do a microHDMI to full size adapter that you clamp onto the cage. Works well and it's super cheap. "SMALLRIG 4K Cable Adapter 4K@60Hz"
