Once upon a time in the little town of Lensville, old Grandpa Jenkins sat on his porch in a creaky rocking chair, sipping ice-cold lemonade, and reminiscing about the three months he spent with his Panasonic S5 II. Bessie, his loyal golden retriever, lay by his side, her soft fur shimmering in the sunlight, as the baby rabbit she had befriended hopped playfully around her.
Grandpa Jenkins, a man of many stories, began to weave a tale that was both funny and profound, like a patchwork quilt sewn with the threads of science and philosophy. The sun cast a warm glow on his weathered face, his eyes twinkling like the stars in the night sky.
"You know, little ones," he started, "back in my days with the Panasonic S5 II, I discovered something quite remarkable. It made me realize that we humans are stuck in the age of the wheel, and we've been there for several thousand years."
Bessie's ears perked up at the sound of her beloved master's voice, her eyes fixed on him with an expression of sheer devotion. The baby rabbit, now resting between Bessie's paws, seemed to listen intently, its tiny nose twitching in anticipation.
Grandpa Jenkins continued, "The S5 II was an amazing hybrid camera, capable of capturing both the beauty of the world and the complexity of life. It boasted a build quality and ergonomics that made it easy to wield, even for these old hands of mine."
He paused, taking a sip of his lemonade, the condensation from the glass trickling down like tiny waterfalls. The baby rabbit seized the opportunity to nuzzle Bessie's soft belly, seeking comfort in her warmth.
"Now, where was I? Ah, yes. The battery life was astounding, and the 5.9K resolution made the world come alive in ways I had never seen before. It was like gazing through a kaleidoscope, where colors danced and shapes shifted in an endless ballet of beauty."
Bessie wagged her tail, a gentle breeze rustling her fur as the baby rabbit clung to her like a small, furry life raft in a sea of grass.
"And it wasn't just the visuals," Grandpa Jenkins went on. "This camera had video assist tools like shutter angle, waveform, and vector-scope. It was like tapping into the very fabric of reality, the hidden patterns that govern the dance of light and shadow."
He leaned back in his rocking chair, the wood creaking softly beneath his weight, as Bessie stretched out on the porch, her golden coat reflecting the colors of the setting sun. The baby rabbit nestled closer, eyes growing heavy with the soothing rhythm of Bessie's breath.
"Live cropping, focus transition, and LUT loading were just a few of the features that made this camera a marvel of human ingenuity. And let's not forget the anamorphic modes, which transformed ordinary scenes into dreamscapes worthy of the greatest poets and painters."
His words flowed like a stream, winding through the minds of his captive audience, as Bessie's eyes flicked between the baby rabbit and her master, content in her role as guardian and friend.
"The S5 II also had stunning autofocus, tracking, and IBIS, which made capturing the world around us feel as natural as breathing. The Panasonic colors and e-stabilization brought an ethereal quality to every image, as if each frame was painted by the hand of a celestial artist."
"But," he added, his voice growing somber, "even the most wondrous inventions have their drawbacks. The S5 II was not perfect, but the lessons it taught me were invaluable."
A cricket's song punctuated the silence, as the baby rabbit yawned, its tiny mouth stretching wide before curling up beside Bessie once more.
"As I explored the world with my trusty Panasonic S5 II, I realized that despite our advancements, we humans are still bound by the wheel - the cyclical nature of our existence, spinning round and round, just like the gears within that incredible camera."
Grandpa Jenkins' eyes grew distant, as if peering into another realm, where the secrets of the universe unfolded like a cosmic flower. "But maybe that's what makes life so beautiful, young ones - our ability to find meaning in the patterns, to create connections between the seemingly unrelated, and to tell stories that bridge the gap between the tangible and the intangible."
Bessie's gentle snores blended with the hushed whispers of the wind, as the baby rabbit's chest rose and fell in sync with her newfound protector. Grandpa Jenkins' words hung in the air, like dewdrops on a spider's web, refracting the fading light of the day.
"And so, my dear little ones," he concluded, "the Panasonic S5 II taught me that while we may be caught in the age of the wheel, it is through our creativity and our relationships with others - whether they be human, canine, or even a baby rabbit - that we can transcend the limitations of our world and glimpse the infinite possibilities beyond."
With that, old Grandpa Jenkins took one last sip of his lemonade, the ice cubes clinking gently against the glass. He watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a symphony of colors across the sky - a fitting backdrop for the story he had just shared. And as the final light faded, Bessie, the baby rabbit, and Grandpa Jenkins were enveloped in the warm embrace of twilight, their hearts bound together by the magic of a tale that would live on in the memories of Lensville for generations to come.

Great review, as always. Right now, the S5iix and the a7iv are about the same in price here in Japan. About. I love that you can change the Panasonic menu system to English, unlike the Japanese version A7iv. I love Panasonic IBIS. I think it encouraging that a full frame camera at this price has good IBIS....and a fan to keep it cool. Maybe the Sony a7v will have those things. The Panasonic autofocus is improved, but I guess it isn't there, yet. I think, over time, the current auto focus would frustrate me. If it is going to be fixed in an update, I hope it will be soon.

I’ve had pretty extensive experience with various Canon cameras and a Nikon D500 and I have to say the controls, menus and the way LUMIX cameras work is the best. Those things are important in shooting sports, a commencement or a fashion show where you have no control over the action and having a camera with efficient and intuitive controls can get you more of those “decisive moments.” I’m speaking as a stills shooter, but I would think that applies for video shooters oftentimes.

Another great video. I'm in the Sony ecosystem. However I think the Lumix S5 Was very tempting for some of it features. Course I was less engulfed in the Sony World when I was debating buying it. With this s5 ii man I really can't afford it so I'm trying to control myself from just eyeing it. seems like I would still want to hold on to my Sony's for some of the better autofocus features but it looks like this would be great to have in my arsenal. I would love to see more about the wide angles.

I bought an S5II and I love it. I'm not comparing it to anything else as the only other camera I own is another Lumix FZ330 bridge camera which I bought as a cheap entry to handheld photography / videography to go with the drones I use for aerial photography / videography. So far I own the Lumix S 18mm, 50mm, 85mm f1.8 lenses, the 20-60mm kit lens, the Lumix S 24-105mm f4 and the Lumix S 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 macro lens. I would love the 24mm and 35mm f1.8 lenses but have to start reigning in my spending plus I can't decide if a Sigma 24mm f1.4 and Sigma 35mm f1.4 might be better for me but either will have to wait. This is all just for me as a personal hobby photographer so none of this kit is making me any money.

Great review. As for me, I just want to buy the S5 because I love the Panasonic ergonomics and colors. But that lack of autofocus reliability kills me and is a deal-breaker for me. So I have decided to step up to the Sony A7RV, which is a big step up in price, but will give me the best photo/video package with the most reliable focus. And that is what I need even if I don't want a Sony. Not to mention that the RV has a better screen for video, better EVF, better battery life, 8K which is fine enough for shooting talking-heads interview videos etc. Plus, when you have a 60mp sensor that allows you save money and weight on the glass you need to buy because you can crop in a lot. So, alas, I will have to shed the money and live with a Sony, not my beloved Panasonic.

    Oh My Pixels!!
This review has sold me on this camera. A quick google search of "6k full frame" and I found this, thanks.
I gather the full sensor record is 6K on a 4:3 sized sensor, if so, that is perfect for my needs.
I want to use 2x Anamorphic, and on a 4:3 sensor is the easiest to work with.
I wanted a 6K camera because 2x Anamorphic is sooooooo wide on a 16:9 sensor and I would crop it to 2.37:1 and resizing that with a 4K loses so much resolution. But at 6K downsampled to 4K is mathematically actually 4K resolution, using a 16:9 sensor, but this 4:3, (haven't done the math yet) surely has to be a better result and less cropping needed.

I dont have any ef-s lenses to go with the adapter you could byu, and with canon not opeing up for 3rd party manufact, Im even more sceptic. So - Im looking at the S5 II (and even the I version), and the Sony a7 III (which feels a bit old for its price). The Nikons of today Im not very familiar with (my last Nikon was the DSLR D7000). So - Im starting fresh. What would you suggest, and is there any point of looking at Fujifilms cropped cameras with cropped sensors (like the X-T5). Im more of a photographer than a video producer. I have also got the small X-T20 for a cpl of years ago. Liked it, but not a fan of the retro styled knobs, even though it looks cool.
What would you advice me to get. Budget? Well.. 2500 euro maybe.
EDIT: So there's still focus issues?

the ability of the lens to focus at different f stops is largely determined by the lens. if the Sony is struggling at f12, it means there’s not enough light. On a bright day if you use f12 outside you should not have any focusing issues.

it really depends - overall, the S5ii is a better camera. better for photos, better video features, no overheating, two card slots, weathersealing, raw recording (in an update), but the ZV-E1 has 4k120 (in an update) is smaller, lighter, better autofocus in all modes and won’t have any warping with wide -angle lenses. so if you’re vlogging, I would do the zv-e1. and serious video and photo work (as long as you don’t need 4k120) I would do the S5ii

Bought the s5ii, back to Sony after a couple weeks. Pretty accurate on the "drawbacks". I think everyone jumping into the system for PDAF gotta manage expectations with regards to AF reliability (Hopefully better with firmware releases). Moving from e mount, the s5ii just felt a generation behind in the AF and software department.
Video for handheld work is amazing above 24mm. Unfortunately, anything wider introduces jello in the corners with ibis on. For what it offers, the s5ii feels like the earlier to mid-cycle Sony a7 systems. Just lacking a touch or two to sharpen it up. A good videocentric camera for enthusiasts who are already in the L mount/ Panasonic ecosystem nonetheless.
