I tried this yesterday on my deck and it did not work 2 days before I used a deck card from Ace it did nothing Good video i guess I will try bleach again
This is great, I purchased a “deck cleaner” from Home Depot that cost $20, after looking at the ingredients it is “ Sodium hypochlorite”. Needless to say, I returned and used my wife’s bleach. Thank you! Would this technique work on composite deck planks?
All beach is sodium hypochlorite. So all the same. Difference is the percentage of sodium hypochlorite in it. That percentage is what you need to water down to get the 2-2.5%. Pool sticks is a better value as a gallon of pool shock is 10 or 12% and cost 5 bucks. A gallon of bleach is half that percentage yet cost the same. So pool shock is twice the value.
Hi, I was told you should never use bleach on soft wood (cedar) as it changes the wood. What are your thoughts on cleaning a cedar wood deck. Thanks brother!
Silly question, can i use this method on mold in a basement (some concrete and some sheet rock)??? And then test the air to see if the mold build up has stopped (and was destroyed)?
Amazing video and straight to the point explaination! Visually watching the demo is so helpful for me! I have green on the side of my house and bulkhead. The house is white cedar shingles (now shades of grey and brown after 40 years)....Do you think the bleach mixture would work on the shingles? Or try a small area first? Thoughts/opinions? Really appreciate you, thanks!
@dmonteiro1788 do a test spot first and let it dry after rinsing to see if you like the color it brings it back to. We have a wood house and I did it to mine as well and loved the results. It will remove the grey and light up the wood. Do a test spot first. And you probably only need a 1.5-2% ratio when you water it down for wood siding.
@SamkoWorkShop Hi Sam, Great video! After cleaning a deck with a bleach solution do you feel it is necessary to neutralize the deck before restaining it? I have some areas with mold and mildew and some areas where the stain has worn away to the bare wood. Some bleach based deck cleaning solutions indicate it should be followed by a wood brightener product because bleach based cleaners can increase the pH levels in your wood, causing it to darken. A brightener is suppose to lower the pH level to restore the wood to its natural color and help open the wood’s pores so that the surface is more receptive to stain. Your thoughts? And might you have a DIY wood brightener recipe? Thanks!
Do a test spot to be sure. But painted is rarely a problem. Only time I've had an issue with a painted wood is when it's painted with the organic paint made by Sherman Williams. Bleach kills organics so that paint made with organic dyes.
@SamkoWorkShop no clue , how or what they used to paint . some type of wood paint. however customer wants It wash and repainted . any idea of cost. 15 x 10 deck
My apartment deck looks terrible like this but I don’t have access to a hose. Do you think a handheld sprayer like that would be enough to wash away the bleach (2%) after application?
The beach will eat the stain in many cases. Used to get calls all the time to remove algae from woos stained houses. I always turned them down do to all the variables and complications
absolutely awesome video ! Question about concrete: The foundation of my home has developed a "reddish" stain on it. I'm assuming its a "leeching" of my heavy clay soil here in Pennsylvania. Would your bleach mix take care of removing these stains?? If so, what ratio/percentage would you recommend.....Thanks much, Steve
I would try the beach first as it will kill all the organic staining. I would do a 3% ratio If there is grass and vegetation around it and still water the grass and vegetation through the process. If not worried about greenery that go 5%. Then for the red stains I'd use oxcilac acid or mutaritc acid in a pump up sprayer. Spray on and then if needed agitate with a brush or broom. Remeber to wear gloves and a mask and eye protection with the acid. That's what we use as pros to remove iorn and rust stains.
Yes. Might need to go with a stronger mix. Rather than half bleach half water to make a 2-2.5% mix. Do 3/4 bleach and 1 quarter water to get 3.5% range for the porous brick.
Thank you so much for such and informative, yet simple explanation of soft cleaning! I am renting and have been looking at relatively simple ways to tidy the deck up for when we move. I am wondering, how does one gently remove dark/black grease stains from a deck? It's not stained. But our smoker leaked at one point and I don't want to scrub it and tear up the boards. Would dawn dish soap be enough? Thanks!
We hired someone who pressure washed out black moldy deck. It’s worse than ever now with black mold. Is there a method to smoothe the deck surface back down? And then after doing your method with bleach, should we seal it? With what? Many thanks! Good video!
When he pressure washed it he feathered the surface. Never use a pressure washer on wood unless it's light pressure to rinse. He should of soft washed it like I show here and let the chemicals do the work. Otherwise the feathering will hold dirt, moisture, mold etc and go back to black quickly. Best thing to do now is sand it. Then stain or seal it or paint it. The sanding will remove all the feathering.
Yes. But do a test spot. some paints today that are called "organic" paints use organic pigments and bleach is designed to kill organics and will dull that paint or streak it.
It seems like my white vinyl fence went years without needing to be cleaned then it got some algae on it and I pressure washed it and holy cow now it comes back each year with a vengeance. Is it possible the pressure washer roughed up the vinyl and now gives the algae a better environment to start? Is there a product I could spray on and leave on that would hold off the algae growth to where I can maybe only "need" to clean the fence every couple years and I can spend more time shooting my longbow?
The pressure washer just knocks off the surface alge and doesn't kill it at the spor level. Spores hide in the microscopic lines of the vinyl. Use the same set up I describe in the video but take the raptor down to 1.5-2% mix. Spray it on the fence and then rinse 5 mins later with a hose. It will be spotless clean and all organics killed at the spore level for a fresh factory new fence.
Both are the same but bleach is usually 5 or 6% sodium hypochlorite where as pool shock is 10 or 12%. Both cost the same at Walmart. So you get more with pool shock.
@mongrelbreedhb always do a test spot. The only paints that bleach doesn't work with is the organic paints. Bleach will eat stain so don't use it on stained decks
I personally would not stain a deck as you wont be able to clean it with anything like this again. Paint is fine and can be cleaned this way. I would wait 3 days to let it fully dry.
I have a job cleaning a trex deck next Saturday! Im still not sure what I should use to clean it with. What mixture? Can I use some sort of mix of bleach and water and soap? Thank you in advance! I was going to use like a 1 - 2% bleach and water mix, with some soap, low pressure (below 3,100 psi), and probably a bristled brush with long handle.
You are spot on. But probably won't need the brush. I'd so a 2% mix, no soap and let it sit for 5 mins then pressure wash. So small sections with the bleach so it doesn't dry on you. Like 10x10 area then wash.
I have some old weathered stockade fence around the property and just want to kill the green algae then stain it with used motor oil and Diesel but don't have access to any outdoor water,, what happens if I don't rinse off the bleach? just let it dry and then stain it ?? Thx
You will want to rinse the bleach off the wood, or it will just keep eating and turn it bright white. I have never let bleach dry on wood to see it personally, but that what I hear.
I've seen people in videos use water down pool cleaner to clean a color retore fences I have reservation would you do that to a fence panel.just wondering new home oner so I usually get use the specific marketed products but I know hask exist like cola is a multi purpose cleaner as is white vinegar so I was thinking of trying in my back yard
Off the top of my head. 1 gallon sh and one gallon water would be a 3.75 mix so I'd go about one gallon sh to 1.5 gallons of water. You could look up exact math to get exact ratio. But as pros we balk park it. It's quicker and easier
Bleach is 5% sodium hypochlorite. When you cut that in half with water is becomes 2.5% sodium hypochlorite. It's the sh that is the chemical in Bleach that does the work.
@Letters1to7 chlorox and most bleach is 5 or 6% and pool shock is 10 or 12%. Both are the same thing just different potency. The key is to get the mix down to 2-3% sodium hypochlorite by adding water. As a professional pressure washer I only buy 12% pool shock as it goes much further for me money wise. At lowes etc a gallon of bleach is 5 or 6 bucks and a gallon of pool shock is 8 or 9 but twice the potency. Either way water it down so the sh ratio is about 2-3% for wood. And make sure you soak all vegetation down real well like I show in the video.
How can I clean my wood deck with a pressure washer without removing the stain? If I do the method in the video, will the bleach ruin or remove the stain?
Honestly don't know. Stained decks are very tricky. That's why I did not do them. Some stains will be OK with bleach so will not. And even the pressure washer can destroy the stain if not used right. Best way might be a mild soap and a brush
@icecreamladydriver1606 not sure if I would use this inside. You need to be able to throughly rinse it with water. And you don't want to let this dry on glass windows. You need to be able to rinse this with water.
I watched a video yest where this guy showed how to clean mold & algae off the side of houses. He used 30 seconds cleaner & practically every comment was someone saying they bought some after watching. After watching, I researched the ingredients in the product & learned (just like you said) it's nothing more than watered down bleach!! I went back to that video and left a comment letting everyone know that fact. You're every day bleach is 5.25% sodium hypochlorite & 30 seconds cleaner is 5% sodium hypochlorite. Apparently it also has 1.2% "proprietary ingredients", which is prob SDS, a chemical that aids in the cleaning properties of halogen bleaching agents. The fact that the bottle instructs you not to let the product dry on glass further demonstrates why that's likely the ingredient bc it can leave water spots on glass if it's allowed to dry on it. Glad you're trying to get the truth out!! The "proprietary ingredients" aren't necessary to clean stuff. It's prob only added so they can lawfully market their product. Otherwise, they'd just be bottling up watered down bleach. It's disgusting thinking of all the people paying 15x more, under the impression they're buying a specialized product.
@heatherrhodge2588 glad ypu caught on to this and we're able to save all that money. 90% of all cleaners for siding, cement and even your house hold disinfectant sprays are just watered down bleach (sodium hypochlorite).
@SamkoWorkShop it's so crazy companies are able to get away with marketing products that are practically nothing more than bleach!! Before I looked into the ingredients, I actually wanted to buy stone 30 seconds cleaner. I'm sure most people don't think to research what the stuff is actually made of, or well obviously they don't since all those comments were people saying they bought some. The guy who made the video even said "I'm sure I'm gonna get a ton of comments saying... just use bleach... but this stuff works so much better". He must either be getting paid by the company, own stock in it or something. Anyway, thx again for trying to get the truth out there!
If you are only cleaning organic things like algae, mildew then you are correct. I am a cheapskate like everyone else. And I was using 30 seconds cleaner and really going through a lot of it. I cleaned my fence with regular bleach and then compared it to the 30 seconds cleaner, and the 30 seconds was very noticeably better. Fence had been treated with some kind of stain or deck oil so it wasn't just purely mildew. I think it's 30 Sec has got either TSP in it or something called sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate, depending on which Google results you're reading. In addition to the bleach I mean. I'm not sure that makes it worth the extra money, but if pure bleach isn't doing the job then it's maybe worth the extra dough or trying to figure out what that extra magic ingredient is.
Is there a kind of wood protectant that actually prevents mold? I use Cabot Australian timber oil, but don’t get long term results even though it is supposed to prevent mold. I have green mold. Thank you!
@Jay Weathers might be. But I've not yet seen one. And I make a living killing mold from houses, roofs, etc. The organic based paints from shermin Williams doesn't prevent mold and actually can't be kill the mold that does grow on it without destroying the paint. Best way ro kill mold that I know of is sodium hyperchlorite (bleach).
@yoshis8417 glad you are enjoying the vids. What I always did as a professional was test on an inconspicuous spot like the under side or the deck or some other hidden non visible spot to make sure the stain would not be ruined. Then if all good I would do one deck rail or board to re verify. Then if all good I'd do it all.
My father built a porch using trex and added wooden post. The post were untreated and now have green mold and black mold. Will the bleach solution damage the trex?
Hey, thank you for the quick response. I’m glad I found your video. One of my friends told me to use a pressure washer but I was afraid I would damage the post.
@STAYcaution-uj1sz always do a test spot and shermin Williams sells an organic plant based paint that bleach could fade. But 90% of paints out there are non organic and the bleach won't hurt paint at all.

I tried this yesterday on my deck and it did not work 2 days before I used a deck card from Ace it did nothing
Good video i guess I will try bleach again
Wonderful,thank you
@@mikebetts3573 glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for the video. Will this work on a stained deck with a clear topcoat without stripping the topcoat and stain?
Not sure. I would do a test spot some where not seen to test it and see.
This is great, I purchased a “deck cleaner” from Home Depot that cost $20, after looking at the ingredients it is “ Sodium hypochlorite”. Needless to say, I returned and used my wife’s bleach. Thank you! Would this technique work on composite deck planks?
Yep works great on composite too. But with composite you can water it down even more to about 1-1.5% .
AMAZING, Thanks so much.
@@michaelnelsonsr9624 very welcome
Best ever
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent. Can this work on interior mold?
@@1GoodWoman yes as long as you can rinse it
Does it matter what type of bleach to use? Or will any bleach work thanks for your help!
Was wondering if you could share what soap you're using for sidewalks and driveways.
Sodium hyochlorite
Hi, I was told you should never use bleach on soft wood (cedar) as it changes the wood. What are your thoughts on cleaning a cedar wood deck. Thanks brother!
Do test area in a hidden spot first and let it dry for a day and see if you like the results.
Did you prerinse the door? Just add the chemical
I did not prerinse
Sure wish you were in my area.
Silly question, can i use this method on mold in a basement (some concrete and some sheet rock)??? And then test the air to see if the mold build up has stopped (and was destroyed)?
Yes. It will discolor the raw unpainted dry wall and lighten it. But it will kill the mold. Wear a chemical mask when you do it in an enclosed area.
@@Jason-Samko awesome! Thanks for the tip and for replying!!! 🙏🏾
Thanks for the information, how would this work for vinyl siding?
It's It's best way to clean vinyl. But you can water the solution down to 1-1.5% of sodium hypochlorite rather than the 2-2.5% I showed here for wood.
How long after cleaning should you wait to re-stain or paint a deck?
A few days of sun to make sure it's all dried out well
@@Jason-Samko Thank you, now waiting for the weather to stop changing. Was 80 today, supposed to drop back to the 30s tomorrow night.
Thanks!
Oxalic acid
how would you rinse a t&g ceiling?
with water on a an angle and quickly as possible with a fan tip so you dont over saturate it.
Thank you!!!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Also do you know how to create your own wet and forget??
I do not. Sorry couldn't help there
Thanks!
I have deck to wash , its been painted . I have the dish attachment, would it be safe to use .
I would rinse it with 5 gallon buckets of water poured on the deck. you want to rinse it good to stop the bleaching process.
Will this work if already sealed? My garage is stained with Olympic brand weather ready stain
Once you have cleaned your wood, how long do you wait before sealing or painting the wood?
I'd give it 3 days minimum
Can you apply this on brick as well? My bricks have gone black x
Yes. Might need to go with a stronger mix. Rather than half bleach half water to make a 2-2.5% mix. Do 3/4 bleach and 1 quarter water to get 3.5% range for the porous brick.
@@Jason-Samko thank you soooooo much 🙏
Thank you so much for such and informative, yet simple explanation of soft cleaning!
Thanks!
Check with f9 company and see if they make a degreaser thst works on wood. They are the best degreasers
@@Jason-Samko awesome, thanks so much for the reply! 😁
Will it effect stain on decks?
Yep. It can with certain stains. So water the deck down really good if you think you will get over spray on the stained areas
is it ok for composite decks
Yes
Just keep the ratios low like I show. 2% bleach mix works great on composite as its not very porous
What if you applied this same mixture on to aluminum sundeck railings?
Never did aluminum. I would definitely not let it dry on aluminum or it might oxidize
In the TH-cam video remove mold & mildew stains easily with concobium it says using bleach isn't good on decks.
With a painted deck is ok to do this to?
Yes. But do a test spot. some paints today that are called "organic" paints use organic pigments and bleach is designed to kill organics and will dull that paint or streak it.
@Jason-Samko about to do a test spot now! I'll let ya know how it turns out!
Worked great 👍
It seems like my white vinyl fence went years without needing to be cleaned then it got some algae on it and I pressure washed it and holy cow now it comes back each year with a vengeance.
I bought some sawmill wood and its got some mold on the surface. Is this the best approach for that as well? Thanks.
It's what I would do
Without is one word.
SWS, is it best to use pool bleach, as appose to store bought bleach?
Both are the same but bleach is usually 5 or 6% sodium hypochlorite where as pool shock is 10 or 12%. Both cost the same at Walmart. So you get more with pool shock.
Can I use this mixture on painted or stained surfaces?
@mongrelbreedhb always do a test spot. The only paints that bleach doesn't work with is the organic paints.
Bleach will eat stain so don't use it on stained decks
Do you have to get the deck soaking wet before you start spraying thank you
No. Bit wet down all vegetation around it and anything you doint want this mixture on.
@@Jason-Samko Thank you
How long should you wait to seal or paint over to protect the wood from future growth?
I personally would not stain a deck as you wont be able to clean it with anything like this again. Paint is fine and can be cleaned this way. I would wait 3 days to let it fully dry.
does it remove mold stain?
Yes
@@Jason-Samko Thank you for the reply! I appreciate the knowledge sharing.
hey Jay I just bought 10% pool shock, I got a 2 gallon sprayer for a wood deck, what ratio do I use
A little less than a quarter gallon of bleach and .75 gallons of water per each gallon you are making
So, bleach and water?
yes but watch the video and pay attention to the ratio and plant protection
This is what I always use on wood fences but make sure to rinse really good. can also use oxcilac acid and other cleaners too.
If the SH is 7.5% what would the ratio be to get a 2.5% mixture! Thanks
Off the top of my head. 1 gallon sh and one gallon water would be a 3.75 mix so I'd go about one gallon sh to 1.5 gallons of water. You could look up exact math to get exact ratio. But as pros we balk park it. It's quicker and easier
Thank you!
Am I missing something with that mixing chart? Surly 1/2 gal bleach + 1/2 gal water would be 50%
Bleach is 5% sodium hypochlorite. When you cut that in half with water is becomes 2.5% sodium hypochlorite. It's the sh that is the chemical in Bleach that does the work.
@@Jason-Samko Thank you for your reply! Do we purchase household bleach or sodium hypochlorite from a chemical company? It’s all very new to me
@Letters1to7 chlorox and most bleach is 5 or 6% and pool shock is 10 or 12%.
Thank you for taking the time to reply and to explain
@@Letters1to7farm supply store also carries the stuff specifically labeled sodium hypo if you have trouble finding it
How can I clean my wood deck with a pressure washer without removing the stain? If I do the method in the video, will the bleach ruin or remove the stain?
Honestly don't know. Stained decks are very tricky. That's why I did not do them. Some stains will be OK with bleach so will not. And even the pressure washer can destroy the stain if not used right. Best way might be a mild soap and a brush
Would I use this same process on my windows and in the framing of my basement? It is really bad. How would I rinse off the framing. Thanks.
@icecreamladydriver1606 not sure if I would use this inside. You need to be able to throughly rinse it with water. And you don't want to let this dry on glass windows. You need to be able to rinse this with water.

I just put up a new fence. Should I wash the new wood with your bleach mixture before staining?
You could if it's got some discolor from being outside etc.
What is SH ?
Sodium hypochlorite (bleach)
@@EPeltzer glad you found what works best for you.
Is there a kind of wood protectant that actually prevents mold? I use Cabot Australian timber oil, but don’t get long term results even though it is supposed to prevent mold. I have green mold. Thank you!
I do not believe there is. I don't know of one anyway.
I know there are paints designed to kill organics so I would imagine there is a sealer that would do the same
@Jay Weathers might be.
Try M-1 stain additive
My deck railing is stained with white stain and now has black mold spots everywhere, will your bleach/water mixture work on this ?
It will kill the mold but test it first on a small spot to make sure it doesn't eat the stain. Bleach will eat some stains.
Thank you! It’s worth a try . Love your videos, they’re so well done ! 👍🏼
Will the bleach solution damage the trex?
the bleach will clean the trex perfectly too.
Hey, thank you for the quick response. I’m glad I found your video. One of my friends told me to use a pressure washer but I was afraid I would damage the post.
