Owner operator of a PNW home softwash, roof moss treatments and pressure washing company with 8 years experience.
Black streaks on the roof is from a bacteria called Gloeocapsa magma, not algae. As for the roof treatment solution - bleach - go to your local spa/pool supply and get 12.5% which means you carry less home for a lower price than the grocery store so you can double what you bought with cheaper water at home.
As for the surfactant you can purchase concentrate from softwash suppliers online and store it because you will treat the roof every 3-5 years depending on your local conditions.
Steps - Blow the roof off of debris, clean gutters out with the blower too, confirm downspouts flow are good to go and manage runoff away from your plants below.
Safety first because one fall will change your life so consider purchasing roof boots called Cougar Paws. Lastly the reason most people hire a professional is because a 1,500 square foot house with established moss on 80% of the roof will take a minimum of 35 gallons(depending on your roof pitch), so a pump sprayer would take a couple days and arms like Popeye - soaking the roof is a wet it and forget it situation. While your at it dilute the roof solution in half 2.5% bleach and use a soft brush/bucket to clean the gutter exteriors so you don't end up with clean streaks on the gutter exteriors from roof treatment overspray.
Word to the wise gutter guards must still be removed at least every 5 years max if you live in an area where moss can grow in the now shaded gutters like a very long planter box.
Don't waste thousands of dollars if you refuse to maintain your gutters because they are a pain to remove and re-attach - potential water damage and the weight pulling gutters away from the fascia boards combined with the debris(dirt, shingle granuals, etc) left inside is not indefinitely sealed to the point you never have to look under the gutter guards.
    -Good luck

I'm in Seattle and we had the Interlock Roof System installed. This is the aluminum tiles with the Alunar Roof Coating. I chose the Slate tiles, looks great. I won't let anybody on the roof since it's been installed and I will be cleaning the roof myself and I'm wondering if the cold weather of the December month prohibits the use of these chemicals. I will say the new interlock metal roof and it's alunar coatingthat I have does detour the formation of the moss /algae more considerably than the composite shingles I previously had.

After years of struggling to clean my gutters by hand (moving the ladder around, gloves, gross, etc). One day I see my 70 year old neighbor walking around on his roof with his blower.
    MIND.BLOWN.
Yeah, the blower is the only way to go.

I almost slid off my cedar shake roof when I stepped on the wet area I just blew a pile of leaves off of. Luckily I caught the corner of a skylight with a hand. Wet wood is like wet ice. I'm going to hire this out from now on. Should have learned when my uncle fell off his roof and was screwed up for a very long time.

Had to laugh when I read your comment. I will be 70 in January and have been walking on my roof with a backpack blower yearround for 30 years. For this season alone I have been on the roof five times. Granted, my roof is composition and not a steep pitch, so it is not that difficult. (Because part of it is two-story I suppose it would be unnerving for folks with a fear of heights.) For what it’s worth here is what I have learned in three decades:
      1. While fall requires the most intense work, because I have firs and oaks next to my house (only on the south side at that) there are times even in the rest of the year that I clean gutters.
      2. Leaf guards do not work. Some sort of crap ALWAYS gets through. Had them. Took them off, all 300-some lineal feet.
      3. The long snout on my 1990s Stihl works better than the short, fat one on my much newer Stihl, even though the newer machine is more powerful. (The older Stihl is also much lighter.)
      4. I wish they made blowers with the snout system on the left, as there are places on my roof where I have to walk backwards and bent over to clear the gutters,
      5. Stay off the gin. You are on a roof, after all. And, yeah, being in shape and not overweight helps you not fall off.

You can virtually eliminate having to do the job again if you use Zinc coated flashing and nail it under the top course of roofing. Just put the zinc flashing about an inch under the top course of roofing to hide the nails while exposing as much of the flashing as possible after nailing. The zinc will kill mold and mildew for several years. I live in Oregon and I did this to my first house and the mold and mildew never can back.

Perfect Timing for this video. I live in Southern California, and not up in the mountains, so I don't have to deal with the mold/moss that other places do. But my insurance company just did a visual audit of my roof. They really only did a google earth audit of my roof. They are saying that it is extremely damaged and I will need to deal with it or they are canceling my policy in Feb of 2025. Trust me, my roof doesn't look like a barn in the Midwest from the 1800s. I have been told to get a certified roofer to come in an inspect it. It is only a simple asphalt shingle roof and there isn't any real problems with it. I think it is just shadows that they saw from the satellite in the same fame as the fallacy of the face on Mars. I think that before we take pictures of the roof, a good cleaning like this should show that it isn't ready to be replaced. Thanks again for the perfect timing and I am glad that the pitch isn't anything like Rad's house.

We had the same thing happen but after we went to a new insurance company. After they cashed our check and took our money and we canceled with prev insurance company. Should have fought it or tried to go back but ended up getting a new roof three to five or more years early. Never again. Our roofing company said there was nothing wrong with our roof but some algae and some streak runs. Found out later we could have had a grace period to replace than for them to drop us. -John's wife

Same thing happened to my neighbor. Asphalt type shingles on 20 yrs, but it very good condition. Lots of moss/ algae/ green stuff as seen (or maybe assessed by AI ?) by aerial or satellite photo by insurance company. The cleaning saved them from reroofing for at least a few years.

@@Btu555 We used a insurance broker. I should have called them when we received the cancellation letter. Or call your insurance company to say if you did an arial it's just a shadow or alage discoloration. Have a roofing company take a look at it so when you talk with your insurance agency you can ask if they need a letter saying its ok... they may send some camera toting office guy from your insurance agency like ours did. Anyways, you can ask for a grace period until you get it cleaned. We didn't know that. It could havd been within two or three years were told. Best wishes to you. This is no fun.

Great video. And much respect for anyone able to "walk" on such a steep roof. I wish I would have known sooner.
I live in the Northwest and want to emphasize the importance of moss control. I have a lower pitched roof...I think 4-12. On the side of my home which is shaded for majority of the day...I had moss (sometimes forming "billows" on the edge of my comp shingles. In hind sight I wish that I would have done better and more frequent roof moss treatments. I believe moss was keeping the roof moist for months at a time...and because of being moist, plus limited sunlight...the natural convection that should ventilate the attic was much less than what is needed. Also, staying wet all the time led to leaks through the actual sheathing. Really bad news. I wish I would have know sooner, as doing this annually would likely have prolonged my roof life.

9:32 I used to do DirecTv for 10 years and it is still a very viable option for tv. Often times internet speeds are not fast enough for a smooth streaming experience. People are always coming back to hard wired TV. As for the mounts, taking the bolts out removing the bracket and putting the bolts back, the holes will never be the same and could potentially leak. Also the reason there are 2 mounts 1 on the second floor and 1 on the first floor roof is because as of 2021 we are no longer allowed to step foot on the roof. We have to be able to reach everything from our ladder no getting off our ladder and stepping on to the roof for any reason hence why you have 2 mounts. The technician could not reach the second story dish from his ladder so he had to install a new dish where it can be reached from the ladder in the future. Your repair should suffice. Great video✌️

Sodium lauryl sulfate is a surfactant that breaks down water's surface tension enabling it to spread better and enables water and oil to mix. Lots of plants have an oil they create to protect themselves from outside substances. It is why water will bead up on leaves rather than spread out evenly, like wax on a car surface. Sodium lauryl sulfate, or other food grade surfactant, is sometime, to a very limited amount, used in foods to enable the oil used in it to mix with water and stay in suspension rather than separate.

Fun to see pics from our corner of the Pac NW. Roof care is NO JOKE here - and failing to care for your roof, is deciding to let the whole structure rot.

I always used Mr Clean as the surfactant when pressure washing. A nice foaming attachment and a cup of the concentrate with 6-8% Sodium Hypochlorite then rinse off after 15-20 minutes. Worked wonders and without the need for such high pressure that you're risking damage or blowing under windows.

What's the PSI of your pressure washer. I am planning to wash mine with the gas pressure washer but I am afraid it's too strong. I have a concrete red roof and I don't want the color to fade away since my insurance company doesn't want to renew my policy citing roof wear I am guess it's because I some moss on the North side from an arial picture.

Health and safety would go mad if they saw anyone climbing roofs like Rad here in the UK. I wouldn't recommend anyone try some of these roof walks. It would have looked better with the dish mount left on rather than the mess afterwards. Great job in the end, just be careful anyone trying to copy the roof walking.

Don’t use “the pros don’t want you to know…” in your titles ever again it is a truly lame tag and is largely un true. You know as well as any one that any pro worth his salt knows there is enough work to share and would love homeowners to learn a few more secrets/helpful hints.

Blower combined with a shop vac for the gutters ftw. Save some of the gutter granules for the roof repairs. Spread some roofing cement onto the antenna repair flashing, the some shingle granules from the gutter clean out. Or if you have some old matching shingles cut a patch out and roof cement it onto the patch. If you’re the of a steep pitched roof, add a permanent roof anchor point for a safety harness. Despite what others have said, falling off roofs is overrated, and should probably be avoided.

Yes I’ve gotten rid of that pollen on solar panels by spraying the bleach mix, waiting 5 minutes, and using a light pressure washer. If you still see some pollen afterward, spray on the chemical and wait a little longer and use a stronger pressure wash tip. Hope this helps!

That flashing should 100% be on top of the 2nd shingle. But more importantly the way they fasten the top layer of shingle is more important. If they shot a nail in and just caulked the top the water can get onto that flashing find the nail hole and go right into the house. I like to squirt a little roof cement and shoot my nails into that spot. But also add flashing on top of the last row

Funny story, my landlord called me 1 day at work asking if I used the old tv dish on the roof. She had roofers over and they wanted to remove it to make their job easier. I didn't even know there was a dish up there so I said sure go ahead. Well I get home later and my internet isn't working. Turns out the cable coming into my basement apartment made a detour on the roof over to the old dish and the roofers took down the dish and cable both. Fortunately they left the cable coiled up farther down and after the cable company failed to show up 3 times in a row I ended up splicing it back together myself. Still works great though 😊
