I absolutely love how rad is able to just explain certain things , how he’s able to jump around with that camera in his mouth , and just how he is getting better in front of the camera.
You can virtually eliminate having to do the job again if you use Zinc coated flashing and nail it under the top course of roofing. Just put the zinc flashing about an inch under the top course of roofing to hide the nails while exposing as much of the flashing as possible after nailing. The zinc will kill mold and mildew for several years. I live in Oregon and I did this to my first house and the mold and mildew never can back.
I applied 2 gallons of Wet and Forget. Followed package application instructions. Was a total waste of money, and that stuff isn’t cheap. Did absolutely nothing on the black streaks and stains on my roof.
Wet n forget works great on The North side alage on our vinyl siding. Last two to three years before we have to redo. It takes a little time to work but works great. We use the concetrate one. We got alot of applications from the one bottle. Costco's usually sells it in the spring.
Good music throughout the video, great job filming, excellent commentary, simple inexpensive roof patch, safety requirements repeated and a subject we all have in common. Nicely done covering so much in a short video.
9:32 I used to do DirecTv for 10 years and it is still a very viable option for tv. Often times internet speeds are not fast enough for a smooth streaming experience. People are always coming back to hard wired TV. As for the mounts, taking the bolts out removing the bracket and putting the bolts back, the holes will never be the same and could potentially leak. Also the reason there are 2 mounts 1 on the second floor and 1 on the first floor roof is because as of 2021 we are no longer allowed to step foot on the roof. We have to be able to reach everything from our ladder no getting off our ladder and stepping on to the roof for any reason hence why you have 2 mounts. The technician could not reach the second story dish from his ladder so he had to install a new dish where it can be reached from the ladder in the future. Your repair should suffice. Great video✌️
As a professional roof cleaner, I want you to know that this is the exact method we use to clean off moss. Only difference is the equipment we use. However in the PNW, moss will fall off within 3-6 months depending on severity.
Perfect Timing for this video. I live in Southern California, and not up in the mountains, so I don't have to deal with the mold/moss that other places do. But my insurance company just did a visual audit of my roof. They really only did a google earth audit of my roof. They are saying that it is extremely damaged and I will need to deal with it or they are canceling my policy in Feb of 2025. Trust me, my roof doesn't look like a barn in the Midwest from the 1800s. I have been told to get a certified roofer to come in an inspect it. It is only a simple asphalt shingle roof and there isn't any real problems with it. I think it is just shadows that they saw from the satellite in the same fame as the fallacy of the face on Mars. I think that before we take pictures of the roof, a good cleaning like this should show that it isn't ready to be replaced. Thanks again for the perfect timing and I am glad that the pitch isn't anything like Rad's house.
We had the same thing happen but after we went to a new insurance company. After they cashed our check and took our money and we canceled with prev insurance company. Should have fought it or tried to go back but ended up getting a new roof three to five or more years early. Never again. Our roofing company said there was nothing wrong with our roof but some algae and some streak runs. Found out later we could have had a grace period to replace than for them to drop us. -John's wife
Same thing happened to my neighbor. Asphalt type shingles on 20 yrs, but it very good condition. Lots of moss/ algae/ green stuff as seen (or maybe assessed by AI ?) by aerial or satellite photo by insurance company. The cleaning saved them from reroofing for at least a few years.
@@somaday2595 We should have did the same and cleaned the streaks off. The cancelation letter from the new insurance company within 30 days of inaction and the fact we already cancelled our old policy, we were just in crisis mode and got the new roof. We have learned since then. Just not right. An expensive education we paid for. sigh.
I have the same issue with Safeco in 92503 zipcode on a red concrete tile. Did you have to have to roofer come out with some letter to your insurance company? I have some algae in the North side and some dead pine leaves on the alumawood patio that looks gray/black from an aerial image it looks different from the top light color.
@@Btu555 We used a insurance broker. I should have called them when we received the cancellation letter. Or call your insurance company to say if you did an arial it's just a shadow or alage discoloration. Have a roofing company take a look at it so when you talk with your insurance agency you can ask if they need a letter saying its ok... they may send some camera toting office guy from your insurance agency like ours did. Anyways, you can ask for a grace period until you get it cleaned. We didn't know that. It could havd been within two or three years were told. Best wishes to you. This is no fun.
Fun to see pics from our corner of the Pac NW. Roof care is NO JOKE here - and failing to care for your roof, is deciding to let the whole structure rot. I grew up in AK (not so dissimilar to an upbringing to HI!) where XtraTuf boots are everywhere, from logging camps to fishing boats to everyday DIY life. Totally relate to athletic teams letting you travel!
Sorry you went to all that trouble removing the satellite dish and mount. I left the mount and post, attaching a very small outdoor antenna and used the satellite cable to my TV, over 60 broadcast channels in my neighborhood. Took less time because I left the mount and the screws.
If we could, we'd undo the elbows at the drain pipe or pipes then plug the out-let, Next flood the gutter with water. When filled, release the plug and back pressure the draining water with the water hose full blast. We called it the gravity flush. Worked most times.
Really awesome information. I have a 10ish year old roof so I could easily benefit from doing a cleaning. This was great to see how easy it can be done. Thank you for the tips! And Rad you were great being the video host!!!
I'm in NW Washington. I've been using Moss Out in September and March since I got a new roof in 2021 and haven't had any issues. There's one part that's right below a big tree that's a little discolored, though. My main problem is getting sap off. Stuff is like super glue. Might have to get a pair of those boots. Expensive, but buy once, cry once. Don't forget to clean the faces of your gutters. That's one of my pet peeves; beautiful house but the face of the gutters is covered in algae.
My wife and I both have family living across the Sound from Seattle and boy, howdy do they ever get tons of moss and algae growing on pretty much ev-er-y-thing! Oh, and Rad needs to turn that second-story downspout 90 degrees counterclockwise. It shouldn't be aimed at the sides of the shingles like that.
For any sprayer needs, get a Smith Performance Sprayers R200 (or bigger tank if you need it). they put out a lot more water and last longer. They cost a little more, but the frustration and time savings are worth it
I'm in Portland, OR. Our roof cleaner uses baking soda for people who have organic gardens that could be affected by chemicals. Works great. Does need the roof to be wet to stick to the roof. But at least 24 hours before the next big rain. September, early October is the best timing.
Timely video for me. I have been wanting to soft wash my roof the past couple of years. I mostly have moss at one end of my rancher that needs to be gone! Thanks!
the relevance your guys' videos have in my immediate life is nuts. I've been trying to figure out the best way to get the moss off my roof for a year now. I've tried "over the counter" chemicals and they didn't cut it
I just ran into some moss on a roof and my buddy who did tree work happened to be with me. He recommended a plastic leaf rake so we went right at it. It worked well for the bulk and definitely broke up some of the more stuck parts. I'm sure it would lighten the load quite a bit for you to follow up with some chemicals.
Owned a business doing this in oregon for many years I fish a lot so have xtratuffs like crazy but never tried on a roof I'll have to when I restart my business in next couple months. Generally use a waterproof soft sole tennis shoe a felt sole korkers or on wood a mild spiked rocking korker
I love you guys and really appreciate that you guys are real. You don’t fake it. At least not after you make it. I have watched almost all of your videos and only have one complaint. Don’t use “the pros don’t want you to know…” in your titles ever again it is a truly lame tag and is largely un true. You know as well as any one that any pro worth his salt knows there is enough work to share and would love homeowners to learn a few more secrets/helpful hints.
Blower combined with a shop vac for the gutters ftw. Save some of the gutter granules for the roof repairs. Spread some roofing cement onto the antenna repair flashing, the some shingle granules from the gutter clean out. Or if you have some old matching shingles cut a patch out and roof cement it onto the patch. If you’re the of a steep pitched roof, add a permanent roof anchor point for a safety harness. Despite what others have said, falling off roofs is overrated, and should probably be avoided.
Off the subject of Roof Cleaning => Blowing embers causing structure fires If the structure has gutters, plug the downspouts and fill the gutters with water.
So you made your own less-concentrated "30 Seconds - Outdoor Cleaner" which is just bleach and a little bit of cleaner. Those mesh gutter guards take more effort than not here in western WA. Would be solid moss before too long. I just use a downspout guard on our units (that aren't directly under any trees).
Nice work. Looks pretty easy with them boots. I went up on my roof in sneakers for the first time to sweep off some moss and sprinkle Moss B Ware and was later petrified of falling.
That was very informative! I was going to do mine but I sold my house and I’m out 10/15, I’m sitting and watching this on my porch and of all things I just put to the curb for trash tomorrow is three of those pump sprayers, what timing, haha.
Health and safety would go mad if they saw anyone climbing roofs like Rad here in the UK. I wouldn't recommend anyone try some of these roof walks. It would have looked better with the dish mount left on rather than the mess afterwards. Great job in the end, just be careful anyone trying to copy the roof walking.
I'm not sure who picked the music for the "gearing up" scenes, but now I want to hear it every single time they put on safety gear. Awesome throwback feels.
to me Dawn is too soapy. It's great for cleaning most things, but I wouldn't use it where I need to leave anything without rinsing. Clorox makes a soap that's not as sudsy.
Love the 2nd channel! Keep up the great work! Saw that downspout pointed the wrong direction and all the flashing underneath (rather than on top) of the shingles ~5:50… my first thought was, “How far into the video before Paul points those out?” 😂🤣 The only thing I expected to hear (but didn’t) was why they (the DIYers) should never step on the ridge caps. 😬
I always used Mr Clean as the surfactant when pressure washing. A nice foaming attachment and a cup of the concentrate with 6-8% Sodium Hypochlorite then rinse off after 15-20 minutes. Worked wonders and without the need for such high pressure that you're risking damage or blowing under windows.
What's the PSI of your pressure washer. I am planning to wash mine with the gas pressure washer but I am afraid it's too strong. I have a concrete red roof and I don't want the color to fade away since my insurance company doesn't want to renew my policy citing roof wear I am guess it's because I some moss on the North side from an arial picture.
@@Btu555 I rarely use the high pressure nozzles on structures. Buy or build a foaming attachment. You're only using the pressure washer to get the foam onto the otherwise hard to reach area.
@@matthewellisor5835 thank you for your reply, this youtube th-cam.com/video/BKdm8Qd2uBo/w-d-xo.html states not to use over 1200 PSI in case anyone is interested to know.
I suspect he mentioned it bc of that exact reason. Which is to say the concrete that comes in contact with the solution may end up a slightly different shade than the part that doesn’t when you’re done. And that could bother some people to don’t necessarily want to clean the rest of/power wash the concrete
This was a great video for home owners to take on and save some $$! Thank you! I have wonder about the products to use for this purpose. Would love to see a video on cleaning the under side of the gutters!
They make colored flashing. Brown is actually very common. I'd say slide some brown up so it doesn't stick out so much. I imagine you can break the lexel seal from aluminum with a putty knife. Obviously small potatoes, just throwing it out there.
Sodium lauryl sulfate is a surfactant that breaks down water's surface tension enabling it to spread better and enables water and oil to mix. Lots of plants have an oil they create to protect themselves from outside substances. It is why water will bead up on leaves rather than spread out evenly, like wax on a car surface. Sodium lauryl sulfate, or other food grade surfactant, is sometime, to a very limited amount, used in foods to enable the oil used in it to mix with water and stay in suspension rather than separate.
A nice liquid roof moss mixture does a nice job of cleaning and removing the moss from the roof. Hey Rad, ask your friend if he has a liquid mixture for ground weeds.
You might want to consider using a foam canon, the kind used to wash cars to apply the soft wash mixture. Depending on how much soap you put in the mixture, it could make the roof look lide it is covered in shampoo!
That flashing should 100% be on top of the 2nd shingle. But more importantly the way they fasten the top layer of shingle is more important. If they shot a nail in and just caulked the top the water can get onto that flashing find the nail hole and go right into the house. I like to squirt a little roof cement and shoot my nails into that spot. But also add flashing on top of the last row
This is great, I have a Porch roof that really needs this! I wonder if a car wash foam cannon and pressure washer would do a great job of spreading the material?
Thanks for the solution formula Rad. I’ve seen some power washer guys also clean vinyl and didn’t need to pressure wash after solution. They wouldn’t tell me what they used so could have been this? Anyway, looking forward to how to clean the gutters since I know a couple of family members who could use it.
As a professional roof cleaner, I don't mind if you know anything and everything there is to know about roof cleaning. We aren't hired because we know some secret sauce that homeowners don't know. We're hired so they can choose someone else to go up on their steep roofs and risk their lives. BTW, the average home takes anywhere from 25-40 gallons of solution sprayed, (typically 2-6% bleach by volume), which is why it's completely impractical to use little pump up sprayers.
good video guys funny fact i actuly live in northwest washington haha :) i had to stop the video and wind back to make sure i herd it right' lol Thanks for sharing the video with us!💖👍😎JP
Is there a need to do this? I mean will it help with longevity of the roof or is it just looks? I rather something living on my roof if it will not hurt the roof but I know most growing things can destroy their platform.
I have algae growing on a shaded spot of vinyl siding on the house. Is your softwash method effective for that? Or are there negative affects on vinyl? Edit: I looked up that mystery ingredient and see that its just a surfactant. I think I'm good to go.
best sticking on shingle roofs, VANS sneakers. Tennis shoes grip better due to the softer rubber yet don't last. You can use a zinc strips 2-3 courses below the ridgeline to prevent black staining. Mostly, there's a counter-flashing which is usually aluminium and looks like hell so a shingle strip covers it, preferably installed with 'tar' or silicone. Gutters? depends where you live. It's easier here in New England to blow them out 2x a year than to fight gutter guards . Can also use a gutter flow system which is a rod connected to the hose to power wash them out using a U shaped connector. Power washing is not proper on shingles as it degrades it's life. BTW a 30 year shingle's life is approximately 17 years. pressure washing it kills years of life but hey, it does get the moss off if used from a distance
This was great, guys. Is there another product you might recommend for those of us who are very allergic to bleach? I can't even be around the diluted stuff.

I'm not sure who picked the music for the "gearing up" scenes, but now I want to hear it every single time they put on safety gear. Awesome throwback feels.
1:00 Michigan is kinda like that, with the lower and upper peninsulas...
Good thing Rad is a stuntman; I'd be putting in permanent fall restraint anchors on that kind of slope.
I use a mixture of pool essentials, dawn liquid soap and water. Works great and less expensive.
to me Dawn is too soapy. It's great for cleaning most things, but I wouldn't use it where I need to leave anything without rinsing. Clorox makes a soap that's not as sudsy.
Love the 2nd channel! Keep up the great work!
Saw that downspout pointed the wrong direction and all the flashing underneath (rather than on top) of the shingles ~5:50… my first thought was, “How far into the video before Paul points those out?” 😂🤣
The only thing I expected to hear (but didn’t) was why they (the DIYers) should never step on the ridge caps.
The bleach solution won't damage the concrete, in fact it's typically used for a pretreatment and post-treatment when power washing the sidewalk.
@8:18 Living in NW Washington, I have to agree with Paul: I don't see any cedar trees in Rad's yard.
In Texas roofs rarely last long enough to get moss and stain on them due to hail storms. We're on our 3rd roof in 24 years.
LOVE me some Stud Pack!!
Great for a shed roof. I don't want to die from a fall off a slicked up house roof.
They make colored flashing. Brown is actually very common. I'd say slide some brown up so it doesn't stick out so much. I imagine you can break the lexel seal from aluminum with a putty knife. Obviously small potatoes, just throwing it out there.
Thanks Rad! I had no idea that those black streaks were mold/algae.
Also used in some toothpastes.
I'd watch 100 studpack channels
A nice liquid roof moss mixture does a nice job of cleaning and removing the moss from the roof. Hey Rad, ask your friend if he has a liquid mixture for ground weeds.
You might want to consider using a foam canon, the kind used to wash cars to apply the soft wash mixture. Depending on how much soap you put in the mixture, it could make the roof look lide it is covered in shampoo!
Any tips on cleaning the stains on the gutter, almond colored gutters always get that blackish stain from the aluminum oxidation
I think I like the new channel more than the old one :-D
Great video, helpful information ! Keep up the great work
Secret Service would never climb such a steep roof :)
😂😂😂
I’m more than certain they would climb anything to kiss some democrats arse.
😂😂😂
summer is the new camera girl ..
Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Rad had concepts of a flashing detail when he pieced that repair together 😂
Thanks Rad
So very interested in the gutter/siding cleaning tips...
I really enjoy the island of Kaui !!
Great job and info Rad!
This is great, I have a Porch roof that really needs this! I wonder if a car wash foam cannon and pressure washer would do a great job of spreading the material?
very very useful content! Thanks
Great job and info Rad.
Paul you forgot to suggest smashing the like bottom. 🙂 Nice job
Good lord Rad - stay safe gang - missed Jordan
Thanks for the solution formula Rad. I’ve seen some power washer guys also clean vinyl and didn’t need to pressure wash after solution. They wouldn’t tell me what they used so could have been this? Anyway, looking forward to how to clean the gutters since I know a couple of family members who could use it.
Another great product I use is 30 Second House Wash.
Man this guy is not afraid of fhe roof. I dont like heights but i will do it if necessary
Is there a need to do this? I mean will it help with longevity of the roof or is it just looks? I rather something living on my roof if it will not hurt the roof but I know most growing things can destroy their platform.
How old is Rad actually? He seems to have 20 years of job experience at the age of 25
Some people just learn faster than others lol
Some people just live a strange life and get constantly thrown into new situations and jobs.
Looks like he's in his 30s I would say
He's probably 33
@@body98755 in the Perkins collaboration video he said he was 29
I have algae growing on a shaded spot of vinyl siding on the house.
Hot water, salt and baking soda, shake well. ')
This was great, guys. Is there another product you might recommend for those of us who are very allergic to bleach? I can't even be around the diluted stuff.
Your neighbor behind Paul at the end needs a good wash. Lol
