  • Cleaning mold mildew and algae from decks and fences seems simple, but it's important to learn about what's on your dirty fence and deck before you start. We help you understand the difference between cleaners and algaecides as well. We test and review for both simple cleaning as well as pressure washing pre-treatments. I'm a 21 year old, staying with family during this pandemic. Our deck hasn't been cleaned since I was 7 so I'm looking into different ways to do that for my family, staying busy. I never thought I'd be here on this video but I'm enjoying it.

If you use Wet&Forget and follow the directions, you will get really good results after a period of time to let the product kill the nasty stuff and keep it from coming back for at least a year. I've used both the type Doc likes (w/gas pressure washer and turbo nozzle for a wood fence like his) which cleans that day and the Wet&Forget type which is super easy to apply and it DOES WORK. I've used it on my vinyl siding and gutters. Works really great and caused the nasty stuff to disappear in about two-three weeks. stayed gone for over a year. Depends on what you want to accomplish, tools available and time to spend doing it. My pick of the litter is the Wet&Forget product. Really good advice about the 40° fan vs. the turbo nozzle.

30 second cleaner worked like MAGIC ON MY 2 year old never stained cedar fence. No pressure washer needed, no brushing and the stuff doesn’t hurt my grass/plants. Price at Lowe’s is the cheapest as Amazon was almost twice the price. Thanks again Doc!

I've always used regular Jo-Max with a combination of Outdoor Clorox and water. The 1 gallon of Jo-Max has mix ratios on the back of the container depending on how much you want to make. Always let sit at least 10 minutes and never use in direct sunlight due to rapid evaporation. Always thoroughly rinse when using Clorox because it can leave residue if you don't. Pressure washer is definitely recommended. This is the go-to system for most painters doing exterior repaints. Use a bug sprayer for application because if you use the injector on the pressure washer, it dilutes the product and doesn't work as effectively.

Based on this video I purchased the winner.... and WOW it was a winner! Thank you so much for making this video. My fence was covered in green and black stuff and is quite old. I think our fence is 10+ years and never been cleaned or stained. WELL- OMG. This product was IMMEDIATE results. I needed much more product than I anticipated (had to make a run back out to the store), but it was well worth it. Some areas were in really bad shape and I had to do a second coat- but it worked... and there is NO scrubbing needed. It was quick, easy and now it looks like we have a new fence! I read other reviews (on other sites) that said it was the same as bleach- so I did a test. Let me say, it is not. Bleach did nothing ( I tried it in 1/3 ratio and 1/2 ratio with water). My investment was well worth it. My only feedback for the manufacturer is to make it available in much larger containers. Thank you again!!

Thank you for your honest side by side comparison, Doc! Nothing means more than an unbiased review, and your test is wonderfully thorough. We would offer to send you some thank you product, but you already said you refuse free samples. A man of morals, too! We've been making the same cleaner for over 40 years and are the original on the market. Thank you for sharing us with your fans and showing people why 30 SECONDS is the original and still the best since 1977!

I’ve been using that product for about 3-4 years now and it’s great for cleaning anything outdoors . I use it in a 4 gallon backpack pump up sprayer, then power wash off , typically with a 20 degree for farther reaching in high areas . The trick is to apply it to a dry surface and really saturate the area . Put on as much ahead as long as it doesn’t completely dry before you rinse . Start at the bottom and work up to reduce chance of streaking . Also , you need to control the overspray somewhat if you don’t want clean speckles on unintended objects like mailboxes or lawn furniture . Im a painting contractor for 20 years and about 1/4 of my summer work is washing . I first found it at sherwin williams for $20 a gallon , but then saw the same thing at Lowe’s in a different style jug for $10 . The difference I see is the cling value between the two , the sherwin stuff held a little better on vertical surfaces - but for $10 difference my customers don’t care . I only use this product except for when things really need old paint and everything removed then I use M-1 and mix it 50-50 and you better watch out because it will eat a hole through your skin !
And doc - you like to talk as much as I like to type .... apparently . 👍

Really loved how you walked us through your thorough & objective reviews of those products. And your tone was just perfect for the presentation; volume was not too high or low...tone was mellow.
A few years ago, I discovered 30 Seconds Outdoor Cleaner & began using it on my backyard fence and concrete deck. It did wonders for both. Since then, the original fence, which was really showing signs of deterioration after at least 15 years, was replaced due to it having been destroyed by a hurricane, so now I just use this product on the concrete deck and front porch.

Hey Doc, Thanks for the Video. I will say that I don't like cleaning my siding and fences with Bleach products either so I used the "Wet and Forget." I bought the one that came with an attached hose sprayer. I read the instructions and it does say up to 6 months and I thought that was a bunch of BS, but since I already bought it, I figured I would go ahead and use it. I used it on my Siding and neighbor's white fence that was facing my yard. I have lots of tall evergreens growing against my siding and throughout the yard so they keep constant shade which is a perfect environment for Mold, Mildew and Algae to grow and my surfaces had PLENTY. As far as ease to use, I'd give it a 8 since all you have to do is attach it to a hose and turn it on but it says it has "Extreme Reach" and not to use on a windy day. The day I used it wasn't windy but even the slight breeze did diminish the reach and barely reached my 2nd floor without back-spraying me in the face. It also left a smell that lingered for about 3-4 days and was considerably worse on the 2nd day but got better as the days progressed and was completely gone before the following weekend.. However despite all the "negatives", just on the 2nd day, all of the mold, mildew and algae were gone and now it's been 3 weeks and my siding actually looks cleaner than when I power washed last year (I left a few "streaks" as my overlapping technique was south of perfect and the pressure was less than ideal for cleaning the 2nd level siding). I really wish you would have left the Wet and Forget on your fence for a few days to see the results. Maybe next year after the mold returns, you can spray it on and wait a week.

Thanks Doc, i'm about to get to work on the metal roof of my house and I too have been researching and seeing all the various products out there. I started off washing the house (Hardi Plank Siding) and used the Armor Guard. Granted i was trying to get off some REALLY bad stuff in a shaded alcove where my dryer vent exhausts too. I know, not my brightest idea when designing the house! It didn't touch it so i ended up just using good ole bleach cut 20:1. I took the Armor Guard back with intentions to get Wet and Forget but i really wasn't excited about taking so long to work. On my way to the isle I passed by 30second cleaner. The price was right (1/3 cost of wet and forget) and i figured i would give it a try. I'm headed to get my 50' lift i rented for the weekend and i can tell you watching your video and seeing your results i feel that much better about my decision. Thanks again...i'm a subscriber now and look forward to future projects. 2 THUMBS UP!

I have a friend who has a remote cabin in Highlands, NC. He visits maybe 4 times a year and never wants to spend his time upkeeping stuff but he hated all the algae and mildew on the cabin sides. He sprayed Wet & Forget on everything right before heading back to Atlanta one time. To his amazement, the next visit showed a completely different cabin that was clean and bright, except for areas he missed. He's now a believer but I agree that product is not instant - it takes weeks.

Nice explanation and comparison of the different product and methods. It does take time for the algicides to produce results, but they are long lasting. Great video, thanks for taking the time to show all these options.
Watched this video after power washing most of my 12 year old fence with acceptable results. Power washing left some minor areas with "leftover" mold/mildew/algae so I went and bought the 30 seconds cleaner. It worked pretty well on the areas that had been power washed but not so well on a section that wasn't. 30 seconds cleaner lighten up that section of the fence but still left large green/black areas.
I ran out of the 30 seconds cleaner and since it smelled like bleach, decided to use Clorox on the last two sections of the fence. I got the same results I got with the 30 seconds cleaner.
Based on my experience, power wash is a must and then bleach is as good as any cleaner... and cheaper.

So i did not have the fantastic results you did but i will say it is better than the rest. I used a pressure washer. Applied it twice. At this point it is good enough. Prior to this i had used Scotts Deck Cleaner and it was useless. Did three cleanings. So this deck is as good as it is gonna be. After 5 attempts between Scotts and 30 second all in one week under perfect conditions. It was not nearly as bad as yours dirt wise. I am appreciative but .....mine did not come out as good as yours. Not even close but better than rest. Have green and dark spots still!

Good video, I think people’s expectations differ, my idea of a good product is at both ends. At one end I want the best cleaner, which is bleach, at the other end I want the stuff that you spray on and it kills the Algae and Mould over time.. so after I clean the house, I can leave something on that keeps the Algae and Mould away. Now I might be wrong but I believe “wet and forget” sticks around for a few years but I want to bleach first to get it clean. Apparently Bleach only lasts 24hrs once it’s been sprayed, so maybe a week later, I could spray and wet and forget to keep it looking great, probably look even better as time goes by.

This spring I used the concentrate 30 seconds cleaner on some outdoor chairs that I used to power wash every spring. I could never get all of the black stains off. By the time I sprayed the second chair the first one looked new. I wish I had know about this stuff years ago. Best product ever for removing mold and mildew stains!

Great video. I have been cleaning my deck for several years and it takes hours of scrubbing with a brush. I watched the video and went with the recommendation to use 30 second cleaner. The results were amazing.

What a fantastic comparison and the 30 Second outdoor cleaner and the Mold Armour........they work absolutely perfect.........and the deck attachment for the power washer is unbelievable, I've used the 40 degree spray for ever, this was so fast and did the best cleaning I've seen and with just plain water......Thanks again

Great info on the set and forget stuff. I'm an idiot who bought it and then read the 6-12 month wait time. I'm returning it and getting the 30 second stuff. Thank you for this thorough review. Very helpful!

Lots of work you did - hats off to you! I avoid the use of bleach products, since I don't want to rinse anything or cover foliage and the superficial results tend be short-lived. Roto-tips come in different pressure ranges - looks like that one needed more PSI+GPM to spin right. I use a 40* careful overlap one pass and done or let the wet and forget do it's thing - it's a good product on moss and green slimes. Best results (3 weeks dead moss) when sprayed calm overcast weather

Hey Doc, I recently found some of your informative videos and love them. I had a huge amount of pressure treated and composite around my home and I have been cleaning them for over 30 years. I saw this video and really enjoyed it. I tried the 30 Second cleaner today and had great results. Thanks again! The results were close to what I’ve refined over many years. For the past 10 years I’ve been using a mix of regular bleach with a small amount of degreaser (purple stuff) mixed with water. The ratio can be varied depending on how badly molded the area to be treated is. I didn’t do a side by side comparison but would be curious to see that. I think that the cost of the bleach and degreaser may be a little less per mixed gallon with similar results. I can honestly say the 30 Cleaner would give my 10 year old concoction a run for its money. Both yield fantastic results.
Great videos so keep them coming. You do a fantastic job and I am impressed with the content. Right down to the video camera and editing software video. You certainly give us all the tools to share some of our knowledge. I may have to try my hand at a TH-cam video sometime in the future 😃

I use this 30 Second cleaner stuff on the kids inflatable pool, and it's a life saver. It removes all the slime and dirt with a simple spray, 5 minute wait, and rinse. And it doesn't damage the pool at all. I have some back fence that needs cleaning, and I'll now give it a try there. Thanks!

OMG! I am so appreciative of your experimentation with the various products. Your WINNER - is the same exact product which i purchased yesterday from Lowes. I used the product on the decorative painted white wood and masonite on our house which was covered with black mold and some algae and pollen for good measure. I sprayed the product with a pump sprayer and let it sit for fifteen minutes and then rinsed with the misting setting on the garden hose. SPOTLESS CLEAN WHITE!! The naysayers about this product are negative because of concerns that the product is not healthy for the PH balance of the wood, as it changes the PH, and is corrosive to the aluminum nails and screws used, and in time is more damaging to the wood. I figured my situation was slightly difference since my wood is painted, and the paint has an element of protecting the wood. But I'm not a scientist and have no way of self testing if the Winning Product damages the wood.

I used 30 Second cleaner on my concrete pool deck with some mixed results. In an algae area around multiple pool boxes it did really well and no powerwashing was needed. In a few areas where there was black mildew, it softened the mildew somewhat but I still needed to pressure wash those areas to get the black off. I did multiple applications on the mildew. Have not tried it on wood yet.

Thanks Doc, I followed your recommendation & found the 30 Second Outdoor Cleaner. Wow , it was amazing how well it worked. I tried it on a section of my privacy fence and the results were amazing. Going to finish the rest of my privacy fence this weekend & then re- stain it.
