I'm a .270WIN hugger. Here's a list for those who don't know of cartridges you can buy made from the .30-06 brass shell cases. These are all exceptional cartridges. .25-06, 270WIN,
      .280 REM, .338-06, .35 WHELEN
And a bunch more that were never available for sale. This is why I without hesitation give top honors to the .30-06 👑🏆🥇
I have to commend our man WHO-TEE-WHO for his honesty!
He made some misses and we all do but could have easily remade the video but uploaded it knowing folks all over the world would view it. Just like his shotgun was jamming after he spoke about its reliability the other day. He could've edited it out but didn't. Don't make it perfect, keep it real. Hats off to an honest citizen of

Jack O Connor favored the .27. Col. Jeff Cooper favored the 30-06. This debate might go on forever. I don’t think there’s a deer alive that’s been shot with either one that could tell the difference.

Jack O’Connor praised the .270, but he was getting paid to do so. He was in Winchester’s pocket and touted whatever they told him to. Don’t get me wrong, I own several .270’s and I think they are the ideal cartridge for deer out west. And then again, what Kack said about the .270 is mostly true. But he said it because he was paid to say it. It was a savvy bit of marketing to use his golden pen to proclaim the .270’s virtues. Remington never ever figured out how to do that. Example: .280Rem; which Jack actually preferred.

He also admired the 30/06, said it was probable even more versatile, the 7X57 and 375. He is why the first rifle I bought was a 270. It’s the most versatile, especially with all the available bullet options! But I had to have my shoulder replaced (old military issue) and I was warned by my surgeon, himself an avid shooter, that 30-06 or even 270 would be too much recoil impulse for the new joint. Bummer! I’ve been shooting 30-06 for 45 years. Now the biggest, fastest I can do is.243 win. or 30-30. I’m looking hard at that ranch rifle in 6.5 Grendel! Inside 300 yards, it’ll do most anything that I need it to do. IF I can find ammunition for it, I have access to my dad’s Marlin 336 in.35 Remington. That’s for hogs and bear or an elk if I get close enough. Not easy in a wheelchair!

Shooting into short side captures the initial energy dump then it's out the back and gone.

When I bought my 30.06 in the late 80's, I was looking at buying a .270 instead. The shop owner told me they were almost identical ballistics wise, but there were so many more options in ammo for the 30.06. That's true. I shot 100 grain plinkers up to 220 grain "cannon balls". They were all so much fun. There were even 50 or 75 grain sabot bullets. I'm surprised I didn't wear the barrel out with all the ammo I shot with that rifle.

I was given my choice of a rifle when I was ten. I went with a 760 in 06. Unlike my mentors who were all “one rifle” men, I’ve managed to accumulate a few.
Still am a firm believer in the 06. Truly a personal preference as the .280 and .270 are in real life applications every bit it’s equal. Of course I would never admit that and I adamantly deny authoring this post!

The .270 I prefer for longer shots in more open areas, the ‘06 for closer range, especially big hogs. 130 gr. in .270, 180 gr. in 30-06. The .270 recoils less, the 30-06 can use heavier bullets for game bigger than deer.

I dont know about grizzly , but black bears are pussies. The cats usually run them off. If you're going to shoot one I'd recommend a hard cast bullet for deep penetration and hydrostatic shock. A 9mm will eventually kill a pissed off bear but not before it eats you. Like I said bears really don't want any trouble and a air horn will run them off provided they aren't use to hearing the sound. I prefer the .45-70 when Im in close proximity to a large animal that's potentially dangerous. The 405 grain bullet hits like a truck and leaves a big wound that causes a rapid loss of blood blood pressure. Of course for deer I'd use the 325 grain semi jacked hollow point if using the .45-70. I hope you have a great day.

Nice. *My Hunter safety instructor gave me his WW2 issue '03 service rifle on his 82nd birthday and died a few weeks later.* I stubbornly shot NRA high power rifle competitions with it in NorCal for a few years in honor of the old goat. It's strong medicine on the feral hogs out here. We have a real genetic box of hog chocolate hereabouts. Plenty of the typical Yorkie or other "feral farm pig" genetics with a stout dash of Russian blue boar semen leftover from the time when Russia effectively owned the west coast. It seems the livestock they left behind STILL hold a collective grudge against humans. I hunt steep terrain with thick chemise and manzanita type cover. Brush gun territory for sure. My model '94 30-30 seemed to fit the bill perfectly until the day I took a 15-20yd snapshot at a hog I had just spooked off it's bed in the shade. I hit it bang on the shoulder. No bueno. Muy malo, mucho calor.
It charged a couple of steps then laid over on the shoulder I had hit and started spinning around biting at the ground, forelegs tucked tight to it's chest, hind legs pumping furiously and SCREAMING in anger the whole time. Everytime it would finish a circle it would see me again and kick and scream even harder, coming a little bit closer every time then *BuhWHOOOOOM!!!!*
      Then a heartbeat later "pink".
Miss Piggy was stretched out on her side, legs pointed front and back like a bacon butted ballerina getting 100,000 kilovolts in a Turkish sauna. I was on my tiptoes moonwalking at 60mph and getting nowhere trying to back away blindly while jacking in another 220gr flatnose. Strictly by chance, my hunting buddy (#1) had the presence of mind to hit her carnitas center-mass with his 30-06. (Thanks again MuhDude)
My bullet made it through the shoulder but got stuck in thick gristle. Hunting buddy #1 put the pig down but she was still squealing like a dry bearing when hunting buddy #2 makes solid contact with the sow's cervical spinal cord literally switching Miss Piggy off with a .22lr.
HB#1's shot was a bit of a mystery until we got her field dressed. No visible entry wound! Turns out my dude skewered her from stern to stem. The bullet entered her ladyparts and traversed the entire body, lengthwise, exiting on the left side of the pigs neck, just below the jawline.
To this day I still can't figure out how she was squealing after that twat shot since it turned both lungs into cherry pie filling.
Anyway, that's why my "brush gun" is a full length '03-A3 that has probably killed more actual Nazi's than deer...

Totally agree. In Texas 90% of all game taken is less than 200yards. You don't need a 1,000 yards 30-06 to get the job done. I have drop game with a 30-30 and 7.62x39mm. It didn't take an ass kickin 30-06 or 270.

You are a very good shot. You impressed me very much by actually showing any “misses”. I’m 56. Canadian. Got my first pellet gun at ten........ Anyway.. Have done lots of hunting, shooting, and reloading over the years. My buddies got me to zero new scopes etc. Not bragging. Consider myself a pretty fair shot. Great job.

300 win mag “Merica”! 🤣 I think they are all great calibers depending on shooters needs. I personally like a good .243, but am also a big bore lover such as yourself. Love that 300 win mag lol

No one of the first few hundred responders here pointed out that the 30-06 actually hit the right side of the block slightly and narrowed the block several times. When you finally hit the block it was "C" shaped in the center and it exploded but I think it was narrowed in the waist by that time FYI.

Thanks for the smile today. Both are great calibers so it's just a matter of opinion. As a kid growing up I became a fan of the 270 early. The rest of the family was and still is 30 caliber crazy. By the way the author is Jack O'Conner. Great video Thanks again 👍

I have been a .270 enthusiast forever. Just a wonderful and versatile caliber. I also don't short second the '06... so many bullet weights available, again extremely versatile. But...more than anything THANKYOU. For having two beautiful classic wooden stock, blued, checkered...classic calibers... classic hunting rifles. Well done.
