    I've shot deer with both calibers this year. The internal damage was bigger with the 6.5 Creedmoor. But the 270 had more recoil and bigger hole on the exit side. But at the end of the day. No matter which caliber you shoot. Shoot the caliber your most comfortable with. Dead deer is dead deer. Thanks for the video. Your awesome bro.

      270 winchester is a cartridge, not a caliber, and the rifle will have a chamber reamed to saami specs to shoot it. . It's a 277/6.8 caliber though. 6.5 isn't a new caliber. The 6.5 swede was first built in about 1895. There are far far more cartridges designed to shoot 6.5mm/264 caliber for a reason.

    I shoot multiple calibers and deer hunt with many of them. While the 6.5CM is indeed a nice round, I still prefer the .270win in a direct showdown. Strangely, this past gun deer season, you couldn't find either one on a shelf so .308 became the most popular choice. I watched guys buy new rifles simply over ammunition availability. Even .30-06 became scarce! Fortunately, the shortages didn't affect me, but I think, ultimately, the best rounds to have are the ones manufacturers assemble and compete with. A gun without ammo serves no purpose. In general, the .270win is still greater in availability, it really doesn't suffer in performance, and the recoil argument is marginal if you have half a brain, between load options, updated recoil pads, suppressors/muzzle brakes, and so on. I haven't found any advantage in acquiring a 6.5CM. I have learned that sometimes less is better, so I've given it a try, but I haven't found anything in my deer woods that has made me feel like the 6.5CM is the better tool. Deer still die, but not any faster. Shock damage is equal. For myself, the .270win will keep its place at the deer cabin.

  • @carterthiessen2664
    @carterthiessen2664 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    I have both
    When I'm going after deer, the 270 comes with. When I go out to ring steel at 500 plus yards, the 6.5 comes along. A little less recoil and a little less wind drift. 270 actually drops less but drop is constant, I can calculate that easily. Wind is much harder to judge and the high BC of the 6.5 bullets makes it pull away at distances past 500. However, simply due to bullet flight time I will not shoot an animal much past 450. Even the world's best shooter with the world's most accurate rifle won't help if the animal takes a sudden step as the trigger is pulled.

    I bought my .270 as a deer rifle that could be capable of taking moose as well (moose licences are by draw only and I got my first draw in 14 years- so no desire to buy a .300 winmag for a “once in a decade” hunt).
    I thought about the 6.5 CM, but when I did my own research similar to this, I chose the .270. Any round from a .270 will absolutely crush a whitetail. For my moose hunt, I just made sure I had a quality bullet. I went with a 140 grain Federal premium trophy bonded tip. It did the trick easily! (There’s also some 150gr AccuBond options for the .270- but they were unavailable when I needed them). Both calibres are pretty close to each other though; you can’t go wrong with ANY new rifle you’re putting in your safe!

    Another cartridge that will do everything a 6.5 CreedM. will do and more is the good ole 260 Rem.
    Both work in a short action, Both have .264/6.5mm boolot, but the 260 Rem has a tad larger case capacity and sends the same weight boolot dow range at high velocity than the CreedM.

    • @TexanUSMC8089
      @TexanUSMC8089 ปีที่แล้ว

      The larger capacity in the 260 remington is used up because the bullet has to be seated deeper to fit in the magazine. That's why Hornady designed the 6.5 Creedmoor with a slightly shorter case. If you load the 260 Remington with a 140gr bullet at max OAL, the bullet has to be seated down below the shoulder taking up powder capacity. They're both good cartridges though.

    I agree whole heartedly.The 270 is a far more versatile caliber.The availability of ammo speaks for itself.The flatter trajectory and the harder hitting power.
    Jack OConnor, rest his soul,proved that the 270 winchester can effectively take deer,elk,moose,sheep and goats.He also used big calibers like the 338 win mag,the 375 H&H,and the 300 H&H.
    So he wasnt an advocate of standard rounds,he used it all,even the 416 Rigby in Africa.
    Jack was using rifles and hand loads from the 1940s to the late 1960s
    The rifles weren't as accurate and the selection of bullets wasnt there in those days.He made a point that with proper bullets and good bullet placement that any big game animal in North America and quite a few in Africa would die just as quick.

    (Speaking AS one, for many years)
    Any western, old school, actual cowboy/rancher/farmer or, anyone regularly hunting *on* "the devide" or west thereof (and a few, wide open places east but, particularly west) has *7,* "count'em," seven things in his life he'd never change (wives got "reloaded" all the time 😉) and, in no particular order of preference...
    1. His hat
    2. His favorite pair/brand of boots
    3. His horse
    4. His dog
    5. His (usually old) truck
    And, last but *not* least by "a long shot..." His .270 and .30-06 rifles (flavors may vary).
    Depending upon locale and game/ pests, the .270 and .243 may be interchanged as determined by "the need for speed" but, the .270 is the more popular, by far.
    With those two calibers, the .270 often being lighter and capable of faster, "lighter" shooting loads than the .30-06 (or, in a pinch and depending upon the need for just one rifle in a saddle scabbard in the Idaho/Montana/Wyoming mtns., just the .30-06 if you reeeally push the loading envelopes) can cover anything from a prairie dog to a moose/brown bear and at ranges from 50 to 500 yds.
    Tried and true, sometimes the flashier, sleeker, newer "trucks and bullets" might get the glory (and the younger, dumber girls) but, they just can't replace that old, familiar, ever so loyal and dependable friend.
    It's true that the 6.5 "whatever" has become the new darling of a number of long range target shooters (over a .30-06/.308) but... The rational, "real life" hunting shots taken with "the old standbys" fall *well* within the range of the .270/.30-06 and the wide variety of readily available ammo for those old, war horses in any nook and crook of those back woods supply/hardware/outfitter stores makes them viable choices, still to this day.
    Thanks for this video and the memories of frosty, Montana mountain mornings...
    Oh, yeah, the black and white checkered shoes are "Vans." 😉
    "The old guy has spoken." Any trolls or other arguments about why my Belgian Browning .30-06 or .270 rifles suck just "don't float" and will fall upon deaf ears.

      The only reason the 6.5 CM has better ballistic coefficients is because manufacturers are making barrels with higher twist rates. Those twist rates are hard to find for a .270 Win

    • @MtnBadger

      @@nerdyengineer7943 They're also not needed for a .270. 😉 Iy out performs it the whole way. Wind variance at very long distance is where a 6.5 takes a slight advantage because of bullet shape but, that's it.

    • @nerdyengineer7943
      @nerdyengineer7943 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MtnBadger Right, but the bullet shape is due to being long for caliber, which is only stabilized with a fast twist, which you can't get in a .270. If I could just get a fast twist barrel, I could load 180 gn loads with a super high bc, and it would outperform 6.5CM with every shot, at every range.

    • @MtnBadger
      @MtnBadger ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nerdyengineer7943 The point is, .270 already does out perform 6.5 right now. Only at about 1k yds does the 6.5 have an advantage in trying to hitapiece of steel and no rational person hunts at that range.(that's a whole different apple to bite).
      Watch Whoo-T-Woo's video comparison and you'll see. Absolutely a faster twist barrel would make the .270 better at longer ranges but... Why?? It's already 95% more efficient for 99% more hunters now. Just watch that video. That's all I got about this. Thanks.

    Cool comparison thanks. Please include wind drift tables. My argument would be that gravity is constant and therefore drop can be accounted for, whereas wind reading is much more difficult and wind changes often. The 6.5 CM is also a short action and 270 is long action which is also relevant to some people. Especially for a reloader I would recommend 6.5CM.

The .270 is a devastating calibre, more than enough power. I have 6.5 Creedmoor that I haven't hunted with yet. The lighter recoil and shoot ability is fantastic. Both will work with the right shot placement.

  • @christopherquinn7858

    A couple points here…first is that the advantage of the 6.5 is with the heavy, high bc loads like Hornady’s 143 eldx or Nosler’s 142 ablr. Their bc is quite a bit higher than what you used here.
    Second, I don’t think the 6.5s purpose is to outperform all of the bigger long action cartridges in the first place. It just has good performance on deer sized game out to ethical hunting ranges, and does it with low recoil and without burning a ton of powder.
    I think it’s so popular because people realize that they don’t need to shoot the big boys for most whitetail hunting situations. That being said, I like my 300win mag.

    It’s less about drop it’s about wind drift. Long range shooters can easily account for drop wind is much much hard to account for. For hunting I agree the 270 probably has the advantage. The chamber for 270 has a larger margin of error in it so they are usually less accurate than a 6.5 creed.

    Just to be a voice of dissent: I've never seen a deer or pronghorn hit with any caliber that ended up deader than one shot with a 6.5 CM, I don't know many folks who can shoot well enough under field conditions to notice a few inches less drop at any reasonable hunting distance, and a foot-pound never killed anything. I'm 53, bald, carry a 1911, and wear boot-cut Wranglers and Lowa Zephyr boots...nothing trendy about me, but I prefer the 6.5 over the 270 here in northern Wyoming, and feel whatever you shoot well and have confidence in is the "best" caliber.

My 270 is older, and does not have a bug pad and it kicks a lot, leading to flinches sometimes, especially when standing. I try to shoot it often to practice in order to get rid of the flinch, but I may get a new stick to help with the recoil.

But I got to tell you, three years ago I broke down and bought a 6.5 cm Remington 700 Varmint, put it in an MDT stock, lightened the trigger, Leupold base and rings, and Vortex Viper 6-20x scope. It is an amazing tack driver and the recoil is very minimal. It’s a dream to shoot.

  • @jbradley500
    @jbradley500 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I think some of what is missed is the 6.5 is a short action cartridge with 25 percent less powder capacity yet it is still hanging with the 270 with similar weight bullets. If energy is the measure, 1500 ft lbs for elk and 1000 for deer, your chart makes it look like a wash between the two. Now the 6.5 has less recoil, faster twist, a better Sami chamber design for accuracy, and a shorter/lighter rifle. Unless you want just pure velocity (copper bullets) I don't really see 270 as better. Lastly, do 6.5 and 7 PRC vs 270 too. I think those will be interesting.

    That makes sense because the 270 has the same case as a 30-06 except choke down to 27 calibers. I never cared to much for the 270 because the 30-06 had so many more factory bullet weights available Fromm 55 grain 22 cal with a sabot to a 220 grain round nose for over a decade it was the fastest factory loaded cartridge in the world at 4011 ft. per second if my memories serve me right . 6.5 Creemore uses less powder and shoots a smaller diameter bullet it makes sense it can almost keep up with the 270. I do own a 6.5 CM and enjoy shooting it but have not taken any deer with it because I can't hunt any more. Another GREAT video my friend.

  • @trentonjennings9105

    .270 inches is 6.9 mm, so slight difference to 6.5. Given the same/similar bullet diameter, if you have same/similar muzzle velocity and bullet weight then the main remaining variable is aerodynamics of the bullet. Barrel length and powder charge would impact the muzzle velocity. Muzzle velocity and bullet weight determine available energy which is degraded by drag along the bullet path. Another difference, possibly important to some bolt-action rifle shooters, is the shorter bolt throw for the shorter 6.5 cartridge compared to 270.
    btw, the boat-tail Spitzer bullet was a very important development for improved accuracy and range in The Great War.

In a creedmoore working your way through accuracy nodes. & getting close to max capacity. With reloader 17 in a 24 inch barrel I push a 130 gr pill 3000- 3050 fps @ the muzzle. In a short action platform that’s not bad. Actually that’s what you’ll find in most factory loading in a 270. Just thought id share. I like them all for what they are. & it’s pretty cool that we have so much to choose from. Having said that I’ve never worked up a load for a 270.
