      .308 performed better at that range due to it being slower. The 30-06 was moving faster, therefore penetrated faster, resulting in less energy dumped into the target... both will drop a deer dead, that’s all that matters

      @Driveitsideways 1 the 308 is only about 100 fps slower than an 06 with 150gn bullets. 308 is a much more efficient cartridge, and the 06 only pulls away for rounds over 190gn, which most aren't shooting. Both are great rounds, and have nearly identical performance... 308 just does it with about 40% less recoil

    Absolutely love my Ruger American .308. I shot a nice 10 point with the first round I had made in .308. Anyway, I have both .308 and 30-06 and what I like the most is that I can use the same projectiles for both. To be honest, I waste more powder to pretty much get the same results when loading a 30-06 round. I’m sure several will argue that point, but really is there that much difference to argue a difference. If your limited on powder than I’m sure you’ll do what you can to ration what is in your available supply. Keep the great videos coming WTW. You always have the best videos and shoot things I would like to shoot without throwing money down the barrel. Both are effective out to 900 yards. USMC scout snipers had rifles chambered in .308 while the US Army chose 30-06. The only reason the army chose 30-06 was because it was easier to covert the long action 30-06 to .300 magnum if they wanted to extend the range. Most important thing to consider is at longer ranges velocity and bullet weight retention is what creates unrecoverable injuries. That’s why most “small bore” sniper rifles are now.338 lapua magnum and then you have the final word .50 bmg for excessive range

    There’s probably more differences between the two blocks of clay than the two projectiles used in this video in terms of velocity etc. I’d have to give the 308 the win in this video, but we all know the 30-06 is no slouch.

    Practixally speaking as an avid reloader for over 45 years, the 30-06 for a given bullet weight delivers about 100 - 200 fps higher muzzle velocity over the 308. The 30-06 also accommodates heavier 200-220 grain bullets better due to it's increased case capacity this is less apparent when comparing 150 - 165 grain bullets. The 308 being a short action cartridge is slightly more efficient in faster burning powders and light for caliber orijectiles.
    No doubt the availability of cartridges on the shelf slightly favors the 308 but as for me as a hunter the 30-06 is more versitile, powerful round especially with bullets in excess of 165 grains for larger dangerous game.

    • @richarddoucet7661
      @richarddoucet7661 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Frostbight118 correct....but faster IS more energy. A 308 bullet going 2900 feet per second will transfer more energy to the clay than a 308 (both cartridges shoot 308 cal bullets) going 2800 feet per second. The amount of clay in contact with the bullet as it passes through is the same in both cases. What you call energy is the speed at which the clay is pushed away by the bullet. That's kinetic energy. So if the bullet is hitting the clay harder than it gives the clay more energy. There is no going around that. Mark is incorrect to assume a bullet transfers more energy because it "spends more time" in the clay. That's simply not how it works. Sorry Mark =/

    If the bullet weights are the same with the same .308" diameter, with 150 grain bullets the ballistics will be very similar due to the effecient case of the 308, thus giving it a lower weight powder charge vs the 30-06. The slight edge to the 30-06 with 165 grain load.
    But the 30-06 will give higher velocities with bullets of 165 grain and higher weights.
    The overall maximum case lengths of that 308 forces heavier bullets to be seated deeper into the smaller cases volume, limiting it's powder charges with heavier bullets. In those cases the 30-06 is superior in both velocity and versatility.

    The .308 (or 7.62x51 NATO) was designed to give almost identical performance to the 30-06 in military loadings. This was possible because by the 1950s - when the .308 was developed - propellants had improved significantly. The 30-06 is capable of (potentially) much greater performance than the .308, because of greater case capacity, in custom or hand loads. When using factory ammo, you won't usually notice much of a difference between the two.

    According to the Hornady web site, the .308 is moving at 2820 fps muzzle, 24' barrel, vs 2910 for the .30-06, a difference of 90 fps or 3%.
    Your experiment demonstrates the reason why the .308/7.62x51 was developed. Same basic ballistics as the .30-06 in a short action cartridge.
    There is no difference of any significance between those impressive blocks of clay. I am a retired gas passer and I have taken care of thousands of GSW's most of them handguns, a few shotguns, and very few high velocity rifle rounds. They just don't make it to the OR, they go from ER to morgue.
