    Everyone, both of these rifles have plenty of power to take a wide variety of animals. Instead of arguing which is better, get out to the range and improve your accuracy. At the end of the day shot placement is more important than whether you are using a 270 or 30-06

      Definitely agree, but let's not pretend that the .270 isn't a ballistically superior cartridge. To argue otherwise is as foolish as denying that the 30-06 is capable of lobbing heavier bullets.

      I think shot placement on the steel may have influenced the hole punching. It is hanging like a pendulum and with almost equal energy , velocity , and cross sectional area the resistance to the steel moving maybe the deciding factor. A longer lever is easier to move so striking the plate near the top would potentially increase its resistance to moving allowing the energy to be more concentrated at the point of impact instead of moving the plate? Just thinking about potential reasons the 06 didn’t make holes. The area is only about.013 square inches more on the 06 and with more energy it had to be close... what is the rate of twist on the rifling? Could that also be a factor?

      on a day like today I could hit a quarter at 150 yards, cold bore. that takes practice with what you are using, which makes you best with what you are using, which makes what you are using best for you at that moment so all debate is senseless..... wow. now my head hurts and I want a nap....

    270 has greater sectional density, so this accounts for the penetration. The 270 will generally have less wind drift, and shoot flatter too.

      The gravity is the same but the drag is not. The slim .270 will have less of a decrease in velocity because of a better drag coef. and therefore it will drop less as it's exposed to the gravity for a shorter timespan even if they have the same initial speed.
      The wind drift will probably be less too but the bullet must be longer so I don't know how much. When talking penetration of steel the slim bullet will deform less steel and therefore penetrate easier.
      For practical hunting, both are fine and very similar

      There are very few bullets available in 277 cal, but the options for 308 cal is huge. There are almost no high BC bullets for 277. You can get 308 cal bullets with over 500bc at about 175gr. The 175 smk is one and the 178 eldx is another. The most aerodynamic bullet I've shot for 270 is a 145gr eldx by hornady. Because of the 1:10 twist rate, some rifles don't like the 145eldx. Most 270's shoot 130gr class of hunting bullets best. That's what it was designed for. The 270 is not a long range cartridge. It was designed to be fast and flat out to about 300 yards. It does it well. It's not a very good long range target shooter though. The 3006 with a 178eldx and 24 inch barrel will shoot out to 1000 yards.

I knew a guy that shot a deer with one in the front with a .243 and it exited the rear end . I also know people who take deer every year with 220 Swift's, and 22-250s and they drop where they stand.

    When you hit the plate between the chains you have a target with more reason not to move and not absorb the energy through movement, therefore a higher tendency to leave a hole. Between chains it's held in place better and with more weight (chains) to help hold & keep it in place better.

      So once again the key to success is placement over power. In simplest terms yes I agree. There will always be those annoying x factors like barrel length, powder type, grain weight, polymer tip vs monolithic core vs lead vs accu-bond vs hollow point etc, in the end the best advice is to get out there and test for yourself what works.

    The amount of energy expended by the 30-06 shows that if you had equal barrel lengths you would most likely have had all three of the 30-06 bullets penetrate. The longer barrel does help in things like a penetration test as you do not start losing energy as soon as a shorter barrel.

I had started reloading and realized that companies like Sierra offered .308 diameter bullets from 110 grains to 240 grains. They still list 40 different .308 bullets. It turns out I've only ever shot 125 gr, 150, 165 and 180. I still have that Ruger M77 with the tang safety and have never thought I needed another rifle. If I had chosen a 270 I'm sure I would think the same. Both are excellent choices.

SPEED is what you want.. the 140 gr. although being 10 grains lighter,still has superior "sectional density".. compared to the 30 cal..the weight is "behind"..the point of the bullet,rather than " around " it..GREAT VIDEO!

    No surprise. The 270 and 30-06 loaded with the same bullet weight or close to the same bullet weight the 270's smaller diameter bullet makes it a longer bullet than the 30/06 and that gives the 270 greater sectional density which gives the 270 greater penetration. If you try it with the same barrel length it will be the same results. The 264 win mag which is a 6.5 caliber has an even longer bullet with the same 140gr. Weight bullet and will penetrate deeper than the 270 with the same bullet weight. Greater sectional density means greater penetration.

    • @biggun6658
      @biggun6658 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jason Simone yes & no. On game yes , but steel is different. Steel is mostly about speed & surface area , but weight & sectional density plays a role . Ballistics is a really full on subject with lots of things going on in a very short amount of time. Like we've seen on some of whotee's other vids like the hard cast 45/70 ones. Hard , heavy & slow usually will out penetrate on water & game . & I have found the 45 Colt from a carbine with 250gr rnfp hard cast @ 1100fps over penetrates & punches nice holes that pump out lots blood . But steel = small calibers, light to medium weight & as fast as you can push them seems to work. The 257 Weatherby magnum using burger 115 - 120 gr with full power loads has been the most impressive I've seen to date from a normal weight hunting rife @. 400 yards. Try it you will be amazed.

      Wrong. The 6.5 don't have the velocity, and 2800 fps is pushing it. If you want to hit something hard you need to swing it faster.

      @@ScreamingReel500 Wrong SD coeficient is the main thing for penetration ,not speed.Slow and long 9x39 Vintorez rounds have great steel penetration.Also nato Uranium armor piercing bullets have great penetration because big weight of uranium incrase SD coefficient .

    • @ScreamingReel500
      @ScreamingReel500 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      SD-SD-SD: You can't compare "sectional density" of copper to steel or uranium because each has different weigh, the heaviest will have smallest bullet. SD is comparing between calibers. Bullet has to be fitted into certain size at the neck of the cartridge that is where you calculate SD. If "Who_Tee_Who" do the test with that same bullet weigh of a 6.5 Creedmoor, I doubt it will go thru the steel plate due to it slower speed. You need the weigh and the speed to penetrate the steel, in this case 150 grains, and the 6.5 has the least power. Steel bullet still requires certain speed to punch to something hard. That's why velocity equates to energy.

    • @ciro79
      @ciro79 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ScreamingReel500 Speed,speed,speed....im telling you.SD is matter not speed.Big weight,long bullet, and small caliber ,small surface of inpact......that penetrate steel.Speed is matter ,but SD is more important.

    I personally use a .270 as my full-power rifle because it's what I have. Living out West, a flatter trajectory is desirable but I'd be happy with a .30-06 as well. My Remington 7600 likes 130-grain Federal PowerShok, 1-2" groups at 100 with a 1.5-4x Leupold. The trajectory advantage .270 has over .30-06 only shows up with 130-grain projectiles.

    The problem I see with this test is you will get different results depending on where you hit it because the plate moves at different resistance levels depending on where the strike is. If you hit it lower the plate acts more like sloping armor. That is why all the holes are up by the chain.

    Couple points I see just after the 1st 06 round, on the very first shot you had a chunk of wood backed up to the plate that was not in place for the 06 shot, also the further down the plate you go from the chain attachment points the more the bleeding off of energy will be apparent. The 06 round definitely had a deeper sharper dent in the plate, but it was closer to the line between the two chain bolts. I think if you were to chrono both rounds you will find the velocity is different than what the box says. I have been told by steel shooters that velocity is what puts the hole in the steel more so than bullet size.

It could be piece of wood or even sack of sand that gives a resistance of coming bullet and strenths an impact. Objects hanging in the air it bounces the bullet away and stopping from penetration.Try that way.

    This test is meaningless. You need to secure the metal plate so that it cannot swing. When you hit the lower section of the plate it just wings away. When you shoot the upper part of the plate it cannot swing as much, and as a result the round penetrates the plate.

    • @WHOTEEWHO

If the round whether. 270 or the 30-06,whichever one fulfils its duty for you,it's the greatest. I like them both. The 30-06 is a little more versatile but only on bigger animals especially if you reload. Not sure what you expected shooting the same bullet weights. Someone below already mentioned sectional density so I won't rehash that. Kinda put the 06 at a disadvantage (not to mention hitting it low made the target flip rather than penetrate.) Some 180 grain bullets would have been interesting to see. That's all I shoot out of my 06. You can get 220 grain 06 if you look. Fact is though, I have both and think they are 2 of the best cartridges ever produced.

    I've never fired a .270, but I own a Savage 111 in 30-06. I took a 180lb. hog in Central FL last August. 125 yds. just behind the left shoulder. The shot was clean, and removed both of its lungs (they were hanging out the right side of its ribcage) on the exit. That hog ran 20 yds. and dropped. I waited about a Marlboro before I approached it. Here's the hilarious part. When I approached, I had my 9mm pistol out, it got up and charged me. It dropped again about 5 ft. in front of me, as I'm screaming at it to get on the ground and show me your hands, at the top of my lungs. (Can you guess what I do for a living?")

      @@stevenwalters5352 I defiinitely agree the 30-06 seems to drop animals a bit quicker than the 270 on shots other than the high shoulder... When I decided to try out another rifle cartridge a couple years ago I took an interest in the 280 Remington. Factory ammo offerings are not nearly as good as the 30-06 or the 270 but it shoots flat and hits hard and if you enjoy reloading, its a wonderful cartridge that I enjoy more than any other cartridge i've ever shot. But If I had to pick just one do all cartridge I'm going with the 30-06...

    Both awesome calibers! Sweet video, I’m a fan of .270 rifles as that’s what I’m building for long range, but I love both guns

    I love the .30-06, but I chose the .270 for my needs. It shoots very flat and it is a potent caliber. Nearly achieving magnum ballistics if loaded hot. I usually shoot the Hornady Super Performance 130 & 140 gr rounds and they both have a muzzle velocity over 3,000 fps. The .270 is one of my favorite calibers and if it is too small I have the .444 Marlin and .45-70 as well for the larger game.

      Wise choice. A .22LR, a .270, and a 375 H&H are all you need for any game on Earth. A 30-06 is what you choose if you can have only one rifle that is overpowered for woodland deer hunting, and ballistically inferior for plains hunting.

    That means all of the energy was expended in the steel plate with the 30-06: not a bad idea, better knockdown power on a steel plate! 🙂
