As a native Floridan I've always felt like our political scene is particularly corrupt, reactionary and completely hostile towards the working poor and marginalized. We have some of the lowest wages and stingiest , most restrictive benefits in the nation - one of the states to not expand medicaid which means they bar low income people without small kids from getting health coverage.
It’s really difficult to get any help with getting money for food/EBT, with most needing to be working at least 30 hours a week, regardless of pay, just to qualify at all.
Then one’s income still needs to be so low, that it’s barely livable, just to get the max $200/month.
Gaetz is a perfect example of Nepotism left unchecked. Matt ran as a clone of his father, then has either went furthe, or opposite, depending on Trump.
I have a lot of family who are conservative Republicans, and they all hate the guy, but he gets nearly all the votes of the populous, over a certain age, who followed his father. Why they loved Don Gaetz, could be another entire video by Renegade Cut.
The military base is one reason a lot of money flows through the area after tourist season is over, and many folks vacation or retire in the area.
I’m this district, as in many other ultra-red ones, many officials run unopposed, or someone who is naive to how difficult it is for a non-republican to win gets annihilated.
There’s a lot of old money in real estate(the richest folks), banking, insurance and medical supplies.
The owners of the big real estate offices, banks and insurance companies all are buddies who golf together, or have underlings golf with one another, which is one way they collude right in people’s faces.
If you piss off the wrong family’s kids, one may find they just lost the best supplier they have.
It’s very much like the town in Road House, except there’s no Brad Wesley, not really.
Another fun factoid about the area: not too many years ago in Crestview, Florida, the police chief had such a huge money laundering operation going, that over 90% of the police force were arrested, fired, and/or quit before all was said and done. That’s over 90% of everyone employed by the Sheriff’s Office, including every receptionist, phone operator, accountant, etc. and all the on duty officers, some even in retirement.
Most have went on to work somewhere else after turning state’s witness, or negotiating bargains.

I'm from Brevard County and we have Sherriff Wayne Ivey, one of the worst, most showboating racist reactionaries in the country- the guy is straight out of central casting for Dukes of Hazzard. And so many people love him! He ran against a Black defense attorney and wouldn't even show up to debate him. He also covered up the wrongful death of a veteran in his jail and staged a surprised photo op at the widow's home.
In my area of FL even the most moderate democrats are considered 'radical' and there's this recalcitrant attitude to keep most of FL very conservative. We have huge numbers of working poor and the opioid crisis is still raging here- thats on of the frustrating reasons why Medicaid expansion is so important here because certain medication assisted treatments for opioid dependency are only covered by Medicaid- no private insurance will touch them.

Same issues here in Okaloosa County. There are younger folks who are democrats, but as you said, they get labeled radical no matter their actual politics.
Even the more centrist republicans or third party folks, usually get slandered as being against the working man, anti-religious, etc.
I really don’t like stating how ignorant, or easily manipulated the people are where I grew up, but it’s the truth.
The majority of people over 50 years old,(maybe even 40 now) are very religious, and practice in refusing to even learn who is running against the incumbents, so long as they are told the incumbent is a pro-life Christian, with values just like there’s.
Entire City Councils run unopposed many times, so I’m not sure what would happen if we had a surge of younger people run, starting there. In the smaller sister city to Niceville, called Valparaiso(where Al Capone once had his own hotel, that burned down) a friend of mine’s mom challenged someone who had run unopposed for over a decade and has now kept the seat for 4 or 5 years. She got more done in one year than the woman before her did in ten of them.
People get lulled into a state in which they don’t think anything can change, or that anything is wrong, because they aren’t effected.
Even those who aren’t extremist by any measure, are still hypnotized by the church and feel pressured from friends, because of the constant propaganda of once they take our rifles, the “Marxist Commie Socialism” going to take over the country by day, well...whatever new day Qanon, or some evangelical pulls from their behind next.

They don’t have to buy the politicians. Bank, Real Estate and Insurance Agency owners all are buddies, and they either have children, like Gaetz, or other family members, friends or associates who run for office.
Each do favors for one another, and trade information. This keeps the older money families perpetually in control of all these small towns, and the republican voter base sways with whomever their local religious leaders tell them is best.
The churches really control the majority of the voting base in SouthWest Florida, where Gaetz is from. I grew up in the same town.

Wanted to throw in re: him claiming Nestor was his son- when confronted with the fact that he had never adopted Nestor in any kind of capacity, Gaetz would make some grand statement about "family isn't defined by bloodlines or the proper paperwork"- as if he didn't demonize undocumented immigrants for "not having the proper paperwork". Hell, sometimes he'd even use Nestor as an example of "someone who came in the right way, not like those other immigrants".

He, joke's on us: in Argentina, a "liberal" is the same as a "libertarian" in the US, but they have appropiated of both terms and they refere to themselves as "libertarian liberals". And the press, both right and center refer to them as "libertarians". And most folk in the left protest about that incorrect use of the term "libertarian". I think it's sad, especially for the few anarchists left in the country.
