Fran was sitting right next to Bill, constantly looking over at his cards, and I'm guessing she saw that "Do we ever learn..." question coming up, and had that "No" response ready to go.
Except he was later found liable in the civic trial...so in effect he was found not guilty the first time, and found "guilty" the second time, so 1 out of 2 (I quote the word guilty because in a civic trial the legal term is liable). Allen was investigated twice and exonerated twice.
I can’t help but wonder if men now being more religious than women is coincidental or connected to men also now being more conservative and women becoming more liberal.
Very true. You only need to go on most conservative podcasts on TH-cam and read the relentless barrage of "praise Jesus", "God is great" etc etc in the comments section, populated mainly by male commentators. All very bizarre.

Bill’s comment at @1:15 reveals his ignorance of the law. A police investigation that ends without charges is not an “exoneration”, it simply means there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him to secure a conviction on the “beyond reasonable doubt” standard of proof. While an accused benefits from a *legal presumption* of innocence in a prosecution, this does not mean that outside of the courtroom we have to suspend our doubts or pretend that they have been “exonerated” if they are not charged or convicted.
I was kinda in shock at his comments to start Overtime. I dunno about Woody Allen, but it _feels_ creepy. Neil Degrasse Tyson was "exonerated" by fox news Corp who had 3 of his shows on 2 of their networks? Yet the public gave him a pass even tho he's a creep, I'm sure Bill did too. Completely agree with separating the art from the artist, completely disagree with that means they are exonerated.
If they don't have enough evidence, that IS exonerated. THE public can think they are guilty, and they may be, but they can't charge with no evidence, and no evidence means , LEGALLY, they aren't guilty. UT it's always been the accusation that ruins a person. They stay ruined even if they aren't convicted.

Bill, Fran, Noah - much love to you from Ukraine. Btw, remember when the world believed Ukraine would fall a few days or 1-2 weeks after being invaded by russia? Perhaps that’s a good reminder that one’s individual beliefs and even seemingly rational analysis don’t really matter in this particular war. It’s all chaos and black swans here.
Ukraine would have fallen if not for the billions of US taxdollars sent there and never accounted for. Americans know your guy Zelensky is a comic and a clown.
I know you geniuses don’t know what the “Budapest Memorandum” is, but the United States guaranteed Ukraine we would defend them if they gave up their nuclear weapons which they did. They were the 4th most powerful nation on earth. You think Russia would be there if Ukraine had their nukes? I don’t give a shit if the American people are tired of that war. If this country breaks its word as it usually does. My respect for it is gone. Even our Allie’s question our treaty and military agreements because we have a bad habit of not keeping our word.
And Trump further tarnished this already shaky global reputation by backing out of the Iran Nuclear deal and the Paris Accords among many other agreements. America first is America alone.
I guess you don't understand a Democracy. It's the will of the people and nothing is written in stone. We should honor our agreements and we would if the same President or at least the Party was in charge for 50 or 100 or more years but then that is not a democracy except if people say it is. Messy business this democracy.
Ukraine never had Nuclear weapons, it was the nuclear weapons of the Soviet Union. Some stationed in Kazakhstan, Ukraine as well as Belarus and the majority of them were in Russia. All of the Soviet states that wanted independence had to return all their Nuclear weapons to Russia. It is like saying Texas has nuclear weapons because the US military has Nuclear Silos in Texas and if they decide to breakaway today and that they can keep those weapons. NATO also promised not to expand eastwards and now that is no longer the case.

What I underestimate is my fellow humans ability to forget his first four year fustercluck of ineptitude, chaos and broken promises so that voting for him again is even a possibility in their mind.
I think Bill forgets that rich people can and do find their way out of legal trouble. Just because someone isn't found guilty doesn't mean they did not commit the crime (e.g. O.J. Simpson). On the other side there have been many instances where people have been found guilty and they were innocent. The justice system isn't perfect.
I said the exact same thing as soon as Bill said there was no connection between Rome and China. There was an enormous amount of trade between Rome and China and it could even have been considered a precursor to free trade agreements, which are designed to allow countries to do what they’re good at and then to sell their products to other countries without tariffs and without price gouging. Even though the Romans loved their silk they got from China, the Romans were selling their camels, wine, and gold right back to China.
@@WhateverHappenedToHer0331 I had to look it up and found that the Chinese were eating noodles from at least 3000 BC and the Roman Republic from at least 400 BC. @@Dr.TJ1 To be clear it was not a direct connection, especially in the early years, that is a bit of an academic invention. When he said, "either you believe in the rule of law or you don't", and everybody is silent, tells you everything you need to know about the state of this country...
Well, let’s look at a couple of examples of law: 2nd Amendment uses the phrase “well regulated militia”. But, is that the rule? How about “originalists” who will cherrypick in a heartbeat what prescient means when it comes to Roe v. Wade?
Finding someone "not guilty" does not prove they are innocent. It just means the burden to prove them guilty wasn't met according to the jury. Bill was equivocating on the two as if they are the same, and then floating it to the audience as if they must accept that false equivalency or reject "rule of law". Very few people are left who thought OJ was "innocent". But he was found "not guilty". Accepting the jury's verdict of "not guilty" is not the same as accepting that he was indeed innocent.

Most of Ukraine aid is spent on buying munitions from US factories and sending them our older munitions, so it goes right back into the economy. The rest is humanitarian aid, while some is directly monetary.
When she said Pete Buttigieg isn't fit to be prez because he was in charge of a place with less people than her apartment building in NYC, I knew she was full of dog shit.
These were not well thought out answers: USA pulled out of Afghanistan, Vietnam, Iraq, more. Ukraine of course can win, and it could lead to Putin getting ousted. Putin may not get out soon enough and gets himself killed or any number of probabilities that can barely be calculated at this point. One thing is for sure for at least 2 years: there is no quick end to the war by winning overpoweringly, but it can win by one side giving up and it may suit Ukraine to keep going. Ukraine has destroyed months worth of ammo in just the last week, and it's looking likely they will be able to strike Russian cities, as well as take more territory. Russian losses of nearing 700k troops is growing unpopular in Russia, costing their economy, which makes their way even harder to fund let alone fend off rivals. They can't manufacturer fast enough if you've paid any attention, and now that Ukraine has more deep-strike capability through self produced munitions, Ukraine will likely, soon, be able to attack any rus factories. It's not inconceivable that Ukraine could extend it many more years making it worse for Putin, and taking as much or more land than they've lost: they are clearly the better fighting force despite less munitions and men. I doubt Russia wants to give up crimea, but they may give up kursk. That's if Russia can keep crimea. Sure Russia may keep recruiting and putin may avoid a coup for awhile, but how long is anyone's guess, the rumblings grow each day. Taking a personal perspective now: imagine USA getting invaded by China, they have greater numbers, maybe even more equipment at this time.., if you're American, what would you accept by the Chinese? Would you accept anything less than get the fuck out and die? Not easily you wouldn't. I've been to China several times, the people are like any other of the dozens of countries I've been to, the system of government is not. It's the system that matters, which relegated who is in charge. You think democracy is inefficient? Go to Iran, Russia, Malaysia. You think corruption doesn't matter? It's the biggest problem in the world next to bad systems. Russia is the culmination of corruption and inefficiency of managing humanity, and that in itself is worth fighting against, let alone being invaded by them.
Historically Russia doesn't lose. It is nice to think that Russia will retreat or they will oust Putin but based on what history has taught us, it is far more likely that things will drag on, millions will die and the land they're fighting over will be reduced to rubble. The best outcome is a swift and decisive end where Russia probably keeps territories and Ukraine gains more protections in their remaining lands. However if it drags on and Putin dies (he is old) then Ukraine has a chance of getting all their land back. The cost will be high though. As for Crimea, people don't understand, Russia can't give it up. It was the end of the Crimea deal that caused this entire thing. Russia needs that port. It is worth billions to them. Best you could hope for is a splitting of the area. But it may be that Crimea is lost for good.
You seem well versed and present solid argument(s).... that said, 1) no way Ukraine will actually 'defeat' Russia, and 2) they are going to lose some real estate-- a LOT probably. I say all this assuming Putin in power--if he dies, maybe it's different.

I liked the other guest too very much but I never saw his name because they don't put it on the screen like they used to. They used to do it a lot, so people who just popped in knew who they were. I have no idea why they stopped doing that.
I read many of the reports. All we really had was allegations from internal to a family where animosities were running on overdrive. Correlation is not causation. Allegations are not evidence. I actually take Mariel Hemingway's comments more seriously than Ronan Farrow's. "Though she declined his advances, she states she continued to "love him as a friend" and was grateful that they stayed in touch in later years." Perhaps he was a typical film industry d-bag, but it falls a long way short of the Cosby or Weinstein techniques. "Hemingway received Academy and BAFTA Award nominations for her performance in Woody Allen's _Manhattan_ (1979)." That's how the very powerful Woody Allen treated a young woman who spurned his inappropriate (but not illegal) advances. I think that woke has become annoyingly ageist. Anyone can now sleep with anyone, unless there's an age difference. I don't think that Millennials and Gen Z these days think they deserve the full power of consent at age 21, long before they are actually adults. Perhaps they are right. But I guess they are old enough to consent with each other (awfully darn carefully, from what I've read on the subject) because that was going to happen anyway, except for the ones who dropped out of the scene entirely, because the new rules of conduct are too galling (some would rather be celibate, so long as they can play Counter-Strike before they wander off to visit rub hub). The glamorous morality of young people in the age of social media is not matched by an equally glamorous reality in their own bedrooms, so far as anyone has reported. Wikipedia: The findings of the judicial investigation carried out during the custody trial between Farrow and Allen determined that before 1990, Previn and Allen had rarely spoken to each other. According to Previn, her first friendly interaction with Allen took place when she was injured playing soccer during 11th grade and Allen offered to transport her to school. Following her injury, in 1990, Previn began attending New York Knicks basketball games with Allen. Previn graduated from high school and began college in 1991. According to the birthdate the Seoul Family Court assigned her, she turned 21 in October 1991. The judicial investigation during the custody trial between Farrow and Allen concluded that Allen's and Previn's sexual relationship began in December 1991. Mia Farrow's friends have said it might have started in the spring or summer of 1991, before Soon-Yi turned 21. Hmmm. That's where this trail always ends: dark conjecture from Mia's faction. Since then Woody and Previn have stayed together, as if this was an affair of the heart all along. If you are ageist about adult sexuality, this alone is intolerable. But on the other hand, half the celebrities in Hollywood eventually seem to upgrade to younger models. Any why shouldn't they? It's a free country. Bad marriage is the great leveller, and bad remarriage is a second kick to the groin.

He did NOT marry his adopted daughter. What are you even talking about? He married the adopted daughter of Andre Previn. Her name is Previn. Try again.
Then your problem with Woody is obviously based on a LIE. Since he did not marry his adopted daughter. He is married to Soon-Yi PREVIN, an adopted daughter of André PREVIN as her name so clearly indicates. I don't know why people LOVE to maintain this clear falsehood. But I recommend against it.

Having been to Arizona myself, I disagree with her opinion on it, but I don't think they should have let it derail the conversation. They also went on too much about Roman food.
This is where it's great that Scottish juries can return verdicts of Guilty, Not Guilty or Not Proven.
I was kinda in shock at his comments to start Overtime.

So your quite long complaint is basically that he didn't correctly use the precise legal definition of exonerated? Um, ok.
Didn't woody marry his adopted kid ? I would say that should be enough to know he's creepy as hell.

The silk road. Bill.

Exactly
Exactly true. Putin must get the hell out of Ukraine.
Aight you legit changed my perspective on this, thank you and well done
You seem well versed and present solid argument(s).... that said, 1) no way Ukraine will actually 'defeat' Russia, and 2) they are going to lose some real estate-- a LOT probably. I say all this assuming Putin in power--if he dies, maybe it's different.

The rule of law in the US works very well for the rich - Bill doesn't understand - that is why he didn't get tons of claps

If she were a man you would be more tolerant of her brash personality.
Sadly Al Franken was as bad if ot worse last week
I skipped right past her, I knew she has nothing to say, she's not knowledgable about anything. Franken was also terrible - he seems to have passed that Biden line when you're not the same mentally.
Kellyanne Conway is worse.

Why did Bill say, "I'm not Jewish," when his mother was Jewish?
Cause he's a slick, disingenuous li'l creep.
I think he means he’s an atheist, that’s all-he has said plenty of times that his mother is Jewish
Because not everyone follows the religions of their parents. Someone can still be culturally and ethnically Jewish without believing in the god.
Because he was raised Irish Catholic perhaps. I know about the " if the mother is Jewish then the children are " . People make choices.
"Judaism" refers to the religion. Not all Jewish people practice Judaism. "Jewish" refers primarily to ethnic origins, and most Jews I know are proud of their Jewish ethnic origins, whether they practice Judaism or not.
I don't understand all these negative comments re Ms. Lebowitz. I find her refreshing and adorable.

Woody Allen married his ex wife’s daughter. He watched her grow up. Your dismissal of that is expected given your misogyny
Great conversation, thank you.
Ian Bremmer never fails to be intelligent and super interesting to listen to. He always knows his stuff. He has a very strong and passionate way of speaking that never crosses over to ego or arrogance. For me, he is the standard of a great guest. I liked the other guest too very much but I never saw his name because they don't put it on the screen like they used to. They used to do it a lot, so people who just popped in knew who they were. I have no idea why they stopped doing that.

@@SaraShockley Yes, thank you. I finally looked up and saw it in the title. lol He's very smart, grounded and calm. I like combination.
Woody Allen didn’t do anything? 😂 yikes
He didn't.
I read many of the reports. All we really had was allegations from internal to a family where animosities were running on overdrive. Correlation is not causation. Allegations are not evidence.
I actually take Mariel Hemingway's comments more seriously than Ronan Farrow's.
"Though she declined his advances, she states she continued to "love him as a friend" and was grateful that they stayed in touch in later years."
Perhaps he was a typical film industry d-bag, but it falls a long way short of the Cosby or Weinstein techniques.
"Hemingway received Academy and BAFTA Award nominations for her performance in Woody Allen's _Manhattan_ (1979)."
That's how the very powerful Woody Allen treated a young woman who spurned his inappropriate (but not illegal) advances.
Wikipedia:
The findings of the judicial investigation carried out during the custody trial between Farrow and Allen determined that before 1990, Previn and Allen had rarely spoken to each other.

Try again.
He didn’t adopt her.
Then your problem with Woody is obviously based on a LIE.

I have to say Harari is one of the best guests ever on this show. The discussion at about 11:00 is spot on. The associated issue is who controls the technology that “democracy” needs in order to flourish. Today, that’s the oligarchs behind the government. And I suspect that the most powerful ones are names we’ve never heard of, and probably never will.
We are sending billions of dollars worth of equipment to Ukraine. The money stays here to pay the workers to make that equipment. That creates jobs for Americans.
