My husband is a proud Teamster member. He is living a very good life on Teamster's retirement, after a 37 year career with UPS. He/we had NO IDEA that the Biden administration bailed out the Teamster's retirement fund!!! And, we are somewhat consistent followers of accurate/real news media coverage. So, our experience absolutely proves Mr. Buttigieg's assertion that people are unaware of where their 'good' originates. Keep spreading the word, Pete!

It’s so frustrating to hear because it seems like so much day to day things that get done don’t break through in the news. Accomplishing real things for real people just doesn’t drive clicks so it doesn’t get covered

Indeed, very little national coverage of this. The only reason I knew about was because of having a retired UPS employee as an extended family member.

Klein painfully avoids the obvious...the 4-year Biden bashing campaign by national media (most especially the NYT)...coupled by the 8 years of sane-washing of Trump by same national media (especially the NYT).
A real "mystery" why the public is unaware of Biden's accomplishments and Trump's immovable base.
A masterclass in failure by legacy media, and one we'll all pay the price for.

Frankly it shouldn't be the main issue.
A pension shouldn't override basic ethics of not supporting the fascism and bigotry of Trump.
I perceive that Far Right radio has poisoned the minds of many who drive for a living. (See the documentary "The Brainwashing Of My Dad")

At 70, I can get lost in political interviews. The one man in the last several years that has caught my heart & respect is Pete B. He speaks, and I learn. Learning about politics from Pete has given me confidence to talk to others... especially maga.its! 😊 In knowledge comes wisdom. In wisdom comes strength. My physical body is in the end-stages of being destroyed by disease. I'm sure with that in my mind, any strength is good at this point. Wisdom from knowledge makes me feel tall. Indeed, the Democrats are fortunate to have Pete Buttigieg.
But I would like to add that the Democrats have such a deep bench of intelligent, articulate and thoughtful people. I was never worried about who Kamala Harris would pick as her VP once the short list appeared. Every person of the list was a good person, with differing pros and cons attached to each personally. But I never doubted that every person listed in Kamala Harris' short list would put intelligent. That every person on that short list would be intelligent, thoughtful, articulate, and principled.
I would like to think that the Democratic Party in this iteration, attracts principled people because it's hard to win on principles in the short term.
If you are unprincipled, you would join the GOPs who are filled with "Get-Power-Quick" people who will repudiate their wives, (Ted Cruz I'm looking at you), their friends (Lindsay Graham), their mentors (Josh Hawley, to get power quickly. All you have to do in the GOP is to lick trump's boots.

Voted for Mayor Pete in WA state 2019 Presidential primary. Disillusioned since his political career was managed by the Democratic Party elites. He is woefully superficial these days in my opinion, less rigorous intellectually and more opportunistically woke. When a professional elected is bitten by the presidential bug it is often fatal ... see the case of Senator Joseph Biden clinging to fading faculties and power, ignoring the best interests of the country he professed to serve. Same I fear for Mayor Pete, using his brilliance to serve his political ambitions. Trump is a sociopath and demonstrable flawed human being. This has never mattered. Trump is a placeholder for anger directed at all political elites: Republicans and Democrats ... the enemy of my enemy is my friend. MAGA sees the woke moving America over a cliff and I agree with this assessment.
Noticed that Mayor Pete did not answer Ezra's question about the Dem Party elites (ending Glass/Steigel etc) taking Wall Street campaign bribes leading to the 2008 financial crash and then protecting every bankster from prosecution for egregious fraud. Pete needs money from Wall Street to fuel his career, same as Hillary, Bill and Barack, so he will never be honest again - full stop. He should read Rory Stewart's book: "Politics on the Edge", who failed to become Prime Minister, but regained his honor after a life of genuine service in British politics, while Mayor Pete's soul is lost into the abyss.
Mayor Pete is just the next Dem elite inline, smarter and more polished, but willing to lie, perhaps to himself about RFK-jr's positions. I was a Michael Dukakis volunteer and yet will be casting a protest vote for RFK-jr if he is still on the ballot in Nov. Totally disheartening. Will reread "Listen Liberal" by Thomas Frank and see Mayor Pete in a truer but darker light.

For the question how did we get here, I don’t think Trump’s base thought much about the Iraq war. It seems to me that the main reason is the degradation of the public education system. Ignorance is a great breeding-ground for support for a demagogue.

I watched this in the New York Times app - what an interesting, thought provoking and enlightening interview. It's so important to have these discussions and to not back away from answering the tough questions with integrity, honesty and humility. None of us get it right all the time, but together we can learn and grow. I have so much respect and admiration for Pete Buttigieg and a new found respect for Ezra Klein. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Gosh, a long form political interview / conversation that isn't all about soundbites and gotchas, but seeks to understand the subject's positions more deeply. PB is an interesting and thoughtful man, and not just the Democrat's attack dog for dealing with the right. He's awesome at that, of course, but it was good to hear him relax and breathe in an interview.

His talent would be wasted in the senate or House. He’d be excellent, of course, but so much more effective in a position of authority because he consults, listens, and learns well before pursuing results for the present and the future.

Re: the housing issue - ban corporations from owning residential property. If neither party is even allowed to talk about that, then neither party can be trusted on the issue. Pete is absolutely right about the trust feedback loop, but so long as neither party is willing to even raise the issue that we all see as the root of all our problems, the corporate control of critical needs - housing, food, healthcare, water, climate, then neither party will ever gain real trust. Both parties continue to sell us out for corporate funding, and people of all political dispositions see it.
