Yes it's excellent for painful cracks around nails as well. I use disposable gloves & heavy duty hand cream. Some people prefer cotton gloves. Once in bed for the night, smear your hands with product, really rubbing in around each nail cuticle. Put on the gloves & sleep! In the morning I remove the gloves & rub in the remaining lotion. You'll be AMAZED with how much better your hands feel!
Combination skin , acne prone and sensitive skin girly here i love slugging it helps my skin barrier so much and calm my skin i dont do it often only when i feel my skin is getting irritated i go with pure petroleum jelly on a clean wet skin with a pea size amount leave it for an hour before bed and then i go to sleep i mostly do it for three days in a row when i see any irritation works great never broke me out , love it
Dry skin combined with cold Canadian winter…definitely slug in the winter months and I slug on top of a thick moisturizer AND an overnight sleeping mask! I’ve been using the prequel ointment (picked it up while in the US over the holidays along with other awesome prequel goodies) - very elegant formula! But I do use cerave and aquaphor too…I’ve actually never tried straight up Vaseline! Slugging rocks. Prequel rocks. Slugging WITH prequel is amazing! Thanks Dr Ellis!
I've been using Egyptian Magic healing ointment for years! bee's wax, honey, olive oil, royal jelly, etc based. is very emollient like vaseline and Aquifer is great too! both of these are multi-functional for facial and healing applications!
My skin is extremely dry that I slug every night and when I wake up it looks like I never did anything. I never knew not to do it over retinols. Thanks for the tip.
use alovera gel from any store and seal with cerave healing oibtment also use all cerave lotion ans cetaphil lotion abd u will see the dufference all cerave hailuronic acid remember
I have dry sensitive skin and I live in warm climate. I slug about once a week or whenever my skin is not feeling good. After cleansing I will apply at least two hydrating serums, my plain regular moisturizer on top, and follow up with bioderma intensive baume(contains petrolatum) or the biossance omega rich cream(contains loads of squalane) or the Cerave healing ointment(in winters). The results next morning are supple and comfortable skin ❤
I really like the prequel ointment. I find it so much more comfortable than any product you’ve mentioned in this video. It also gives my lips a nice sheen. It feels so good.
My favorite slugging product is the Vanicream Moisturizing Ointment. It's way lighter and more breathable than Vaseline or Aquaphor, but it's still an occlusive ointment. And it gets bonus points for being great for sensitive skin!
I have acne prone and lean more towards the oily side so I don’t think slugging would be for me. But I still thoroughly enjoyed this video, you explained it so well! Thank you 😊
I’m new into my self care journey and I’ve been focusing on my skincare as my first priority. I’ve actually been slugging and didn’t know it ! I’ve been putting Vaseline on my face only around my nose and under my eyes because my skin is so dry in these areas. I’ll change up a few steps from watching your video. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us, I so much appreciate you.
I’ve been slugging (but I didn’t know there was a name for it) 😂. I use Tretinoin and sometimes if I’m out in the cold and wind, my face will become sensitive and irritated. I will use the CereVe healing ointment on top of my skin care at night and the irritation usually goes away within a night or two of use. I do use it over the Tretinoin and it doesn’t seem to increase any irritation. Thank you for all the valuable information.❤
I have rosacea and my skin is super dry. I’m currently slugging with your utility ointment after I apply my gentle nighttime products. I really like that my face can still breathe with your ointment. Thank you for creating! 😊
Absolutely LOVE the Prequel Skin Utility Ointment. I like that it feels very nourishing but it's not thick or heavy. What I don't love about Vaseline or Aquaphor is how heavy and thick it feels on the skin, it makes my skin feel like it can't breathe. However, The Skin Utility Ointment from Prequel is thinner and spreads on the skin really easily. I love to use the Skin Utility Ointment on my lips but I might try to Slug with it as well. :)
I fight in a Filipino Muay Thai league and they put Vaseline on my face cuts when I’m fighting! It heals my cuts and makes my skin what girls say “glow”😂
Hello Dr. Ellis, the timing of this video couldn't have been any better because I am doing a microneedling process today and it seems like doing a slugging on the face will be beneficial. I can't wait to try it. Thank you!
I have been using a light layer of Vaseline long after my skin care routine. Especially now in the winter. After I apply it, I do my facial massage as last step.
I’ve done slugging before it was even a thing lol i have super sensitive skin and multiple allergies and I was tired of my skin feeling dry around my eyes, nose, and lips specifically, so I just started putting it all over my face and lips and now I do it probably once a month. The best thing I’ve ever tried.
I have extremely dry skin. I flake, itch, and shed dust. I just started watching your videos. Thank you. i never heard of slugging but will definitely try it.
I am 41 and use the CeraVe Healing Ointment for slugging WITH my tretinoin. I have eczema and get irritated when I don't use it with it 🤷🏼♀️ I use your Prequel Barrier Therapy Cream to seal in my OTC retinol for my chest and ABSOLUTELY love it. Such a great product. ❤ All the items I've tried so far! The Gleanser is the only cleanser I have used since I discovered it and I just started using the mineral sunscreen. Keep up the fantastic work, prequel team!
How do you feel about body serums like necessaire the body serum (HA/niacinamide), paula’s choice 5% niacinamide body serum (5% panthenol), good molecules b5 hydrating body serum (4% panthenol, polyglutamic acid, beta glucan) as part of a skincare routine?
Have been doing this for years, just never knew it had a name hahah. I have eczema on my hands so they get super dry a lot, especially living in this Texas heat. I pair it with a staple of mine - Cerave moisturizing cream first then vaseline/aquafor on days I'm not using my prescribed ointment. I still use the Cerave before my ointment, I think it helps to reach the inner skin barriers more but not sure about that? It definitely helps to have a moisturizing night then one where the ointment breaks down the eczema. It has worked well for me. Good to know it has a name also haha.
I needed this video!! I’ve been using Aquaphor on my sensitive dehydrated, acne-prone skin and it has been game-changing. I use a thin layer, and it’s the only way my skin doesn’t feel dry in the morning in the winter. Also, it has improved the texture of my skin and reduced wrinkles. We use petrolatum on my son’s eczema. We tried all the things, and petrolatum is the only thing that helped - he reacted to everything, and needed something inert. I’ve been converted from thinking it was bad!
I have done it few times now and I did notice the heat you mentioned. I suffer from melasma so we all know that heat is not our friend. I did it due to have a damage barrier due to glycolic pads I used on my face. Now I know it was a huge mistake for my skin with melasma. I will definitely stop slugging as I now know it causes heat. Ty
I do use slugging over my tretinoin ointment. I have used tretinoin for so many years (3 decades!) that my skin never burns or becomes irritated. Just flakey as you would expect. After cleansing my skin, I use a good eye-specific cream such as Cereve with caffeine, put on my tretinoin and let it absorb for a few minutes while I brush my teeth, and then slug with vaseline. My skin is gorgeous in the morning!
Aquaphor would give me an itchy rash. If you're allergic to wool, skip that one and check that your vitamin d 3 supplement is derived from lichen otherwise you could be allergic to that too
Slugging definitely has helped me in the past with flaking, Dr. Dray spoke about the soak and smear method after soaking in the bath and although I have done it only a couple times (bit uncomfortable to have all over and covered with pajamas) it really does help lock in the moisture. I use just pure Vaseline
I slug around my eyes using the CeraVe healing ointment. I also use the Neutrogena Norwegian hand cream on my LIPS, then slug on top of that as an intense lip mask at night.
I slug my nails because I have nail Psoriasis and it really helps for a better appearance. I don't know if it does anything for the psoriasis but at least it looks better.
I have already been watching a few dermatologists on youtube and I happened upon your channel which was a happy surprise for me. I've seen a handful of your videos and find them to be helpful so I've also subscribed to your channel. I really like the video you did about growing healthy nails and applying jojoba oil to the cuticle after each hand wash. I'm definitely going to do that because I have brittle nails, onychorhexis (don't know how to spell it ha ha). So I have slugged and I don't have oily or acne prone skin so I actually liked the feeling of locking in my moisturizer. I did know that I shouldn't slug over retinoids but I didn't know that I shouldn't slug over glycolic acid. I exfoliate Mon, Wed, and Fri ideally then use tretinoin the other days (not always super consistent). So I guess in order to slug I would just not use a retinoid. Very good to know! :)
Combo skin here, and I’ve been slugging around my eyes only for a while now. I can’t sleep with my whole face greased up, but just around my eye area doesn’t bother me and I feel like it made a difference.
I only slug over my skincare and just small areas as I could never handle the sticky feeling of an ointment all over my face. That said, my new slugging ointment of choice has become the prequel skin utility ointment. Spreads nice and it just doesn't feel as sticky or gross. I slug the under eye area, my forehead area between my eyebrows, my eyelids, over my lip sleep mask, and the area under my nose.
Great information as always, and is always helpful! I normally use petroleum jelly to slug, but last night I tried Eucerin healing cream. It was amazing! I struggle with very sensitive skin, rosacea and dermatitis, and the Petroleum never really did anything. There was no really difference in the redness, but wow the Eucerin I couldn’t believe it when I woke up in the morning and looked in the mirror. amazing definitely will be sticking with that.
I tried slugging but my skin doesn't like it. I have sensitive, dehydrated but mixed skin type. My skin didn't get more hydrated with slugging over night. It worked on my lips though.
When I was growing up in the high desert, waaaay back in the '60's, my mom's hands were very dry and cracked. We didn't call it slugging then, but her dermatologist recommend vaseline under cotton gloves. It was a miracle. I'm curious what you think of castor oil?
Thank you for this video and all the information. I usually slug with Avene Cicalfate, I love this brand since I was a teenager due to my sensitive and dry skin.
I'm here because at 71 years of age I had no idea what slugging was. Odd word for just smearing your skin with Vaseline, but ok, I'm in the 21st century so I'll roll with it. Thank you for explaining that and I just got finished doing my first 'slug'. My skin was oily all my life but now it's combination. I am worried about milia, because I am prone to that but I'm going to give it a try since apparently Aquaphor shouldn't cause it. My radiation oncologist told me to use the Aquaphor on my neck (39 hits of radiation for head and neck cancer) and I had the Aquaphor for that already so that's what I'm using. Thanks for the detail and showing us how to do it. I learn by watching and I admit, I was 'this can't be all there is to it' but apparently it is. Thumbs up, new subbie.
Funny story- I really don't know where I got it from because my mom has never really been into skincare, but at least once when I was under 2, I put Vaseline all over my face. Apparently I was way ahead of beauty trends as a toddler 😛
Hi I did try the slugging and did Luke the feeling. I shared with a few friends that I consider healthy in many ways. Their question to my “ how does a dermatologist tell you to put petroleum on your skin?” They consider it toxic.
Love your videos and your content Dr Ellis. A friend just purchased Peaches Skincare and I was wondering if those natural products and essential oils could cause her more issues with her skin? She is 50 and has dry, sensitive skin prone to hormonal breakouts and some roseca
I swear slugging with CeraVe healing ointment on my belly every night of my 3 pregnancies has prevented me from having stretch marks. Someone has told me it’s just genetics but my mom had 3 kids and still had stretch marks. Not sure but I wholeheartedly want to believe this is true. It stains my sheets and clothes but it goes away after a few washes! 33weeks pregnant and plan to have a 4th baby so I will be doing it with my 4th as well!
My daughters and I all have severe eczema in the winter months and the only thing that has helped has been slugging with pure lanolin. We’ve tried all the prescriptions, eczema creams, and I have used Vaseline in the past, but nothing came close to lanolin (which I discovered after having cracked nipple breastfeeding my first). Seriously my holy grail and I even slugged my face for awhile with very nice effects…..too bad it stains the pillowcases and sheets and is a husband repellent 😂
I have tried it. I did it all throughout the fall last yr but hated how it felt. I live in the deep south, so I skipped it during the late spring and throughout early fall. Temps and the air are something else down here 😅! This winter though, I started using Cetephil or CereVe over my skin care routine, I mostly focus on hyperpigmentation ingredients, and they do not bother me! I especially prefer CereVe
I found La Roche Posay Cicaplast light enough but still working for me when I'm adding this slug layer. Pure petrolatum ointments were to heavy for my prone skin
So if my face gets hot and flushes at night maybe the Avene Cicafate is trapping the heat in my cheeks? I’ve been using it at night because my face was super dry and it always calms my redness and irritation but I can see that it might be trapping the heat in my face at night. I normally wake up in the middle of the night with my face hot and pulsating.
I live in such a dry climate but I’m prone to milia so Vaseline isn’t for me but using laneige cica sleeping mask and then the cerave moisturising cream is amazing.
Ok I am searching for an answer for what and why I had a reaction to Vaseline….100% pure petroleum jelly…woke with swollen lips that felt like your foot feels when it has fallen asleep….they were sooo dry and peeling. I have the most sensitive skin…had perioral dermatitis in the past and currently deal with eczema and rosacea. I can only use bottled water and a gentle washcloth and cerave moisturizer. The only thing I could think that was bothering me would be the Vaseline. I scheduled an appoint with my dermatologist and by the time I went in two days later I had stopped using Vaseline and switched to Aquaphor and the symptoms went away. Doesn’t make any sense because obviously aquaphore has petroleum jelly in it plus other things but I am really trying to wrap my head around why I had an issue with 100% petroleum jelly….anybody have any similar experience?? Thank you!!!!
I did slugging with Aquaphor spray almost everyday for a week to help me heal after a CO2 laser treatment, and I think it helped, recovery was so fast! But, two-three weeks after I did get a lot of pimples, some quite angry/inflamed ones, which have not happened for a long time. I do not know if it was because of the slugging. the laser itself, or because I had to be off tretinoin for a long time (3 weeks), or a combination of all of it. But I am a bit afraid of slugging again now :/
I'm allergic to topically applied mineral oil and petrolatum, it gives me swollen, inflamed skin and a hive-like skin texture, and it really hurts for days, even if I take a strong antihistamine. (We'll skip over what happened with petrolatum suppositories, just say I was a miserable bunny for a week.) France considers petrolatum to be level ll carcinogenic, but I still have to read the fine print on every cosmetic and lotion.
Do I have to wash off the slug in the morning if I am really dry?? Ive been loving it lately and am shocked its actually improving all my skin issues each day i do it. However, ive been washing my face in the morning after and am still struggling with dry skin half way through the day
Okay, so my dermatologist told me I should swap between differin gel (adapelene) on one night and the next night acnattack (tetrinoin). He advised me I should wash it off with water 2 hours after I’ve applied either the adapelene or the tetrinoin. Is it okay if I slug after taking off the tetrinoin gel/adapelene gel, or can it increase irritation? Please, answer!!!
I have very dry skin and now have psoriasis on my face…..my doctor gave me a mild steroid cream…..this hasn’t helped much and I could only use it for a week…..would you recommend slugging for me…thanks Dr Sam….
Vaseline is second best: Aquaphor is number one. Doctors agree, the best moisturizer. I use Aquaphor for babies, in a tube in the baby aisle. While in that aisle: Honest co baby shampoo. Try it before you say no!
My skin looks dull and im starting to get noticable wrinkles and im only 28 going on 29. Should i slug to see if it will improve my skin? Imma be honest i think my issues have a lot to do with the fact that i was drinking a lot when i would go out and i went out a lot
Does castor oil fall under “slugging”? I’ve been doing my usual nighttime routine and lastly pressing castor oil/frankencense/rosehip oil onto my skin. It’s felt absolutely amazing, but I’ve been nervous to layer it over retinA or glycolic acids.
My bf’s mom recommended to apply Vaseline on his face when he started getting pimples and now his face look like a pizza 🍕😿 turned out he got rosacea and slugging made it worst imo :( now he is taking antibiotics in pill form and topically 💔
In the winter I have the worse nails, they chip, peel and break. I started slugging my nails every night and I now have the best nails ever.
Wow i never thought to do that... genius! Im in the same boat as you my nails are brutal in the winter.. i will try this thanks for sharing 😊
Yes, thanks for sharing!!!😊
Great to hear this. Thanks
How do you slug bails?
Yes it's excellent for painful cracks around nails as well. I use disposable gloves & heavy duty hand cream. Some people prefer cotton gloves. I have the same skin issues! Which petrolatum do you use?
Oh my goodness I did not realize slugging on top of my adapalene gel was making my skin irritation worse! Thank you for this video❤
Can you make a video on how you put on foundation and what kind you use..your complexion is beautiful..🥰
I’m slugging with Triple Paste and it works pretty well with my dehydrated and very sensitive skin ! 👌🏻🤩
I heard only good things about this Triple Paste, too bad I live in Europe, the taxes are ....
I've only just started doing this and it seems to be working amazingly well!
I’ll have to try this. I have combination skin but my face gets really dehydrated in the winter months… Thank you😊
My skin is extremely dry that I slug every night and when I wake up it looks like I never did anything. I never knew not to do it over retinols. Thanks for the tip.
use alovera gel from any store and seal with cerave healing oibtment also use all cerave lotion ans cetaphil lotion abd u will see the dufference all cerave hailuronic acid remember

I only like to slug around my eyes! Thanks for the tips❤️
everytime i look at her it makes me want to get healthier
Absolutely LOVE the Prequel Skin Utility Ointment. I like that it feels very nourishing but it's not thick or heavy. What I don't love about Vaseline or Aquaphor is how heavy and thick it feels on the skin, it makes my skin feel like it can't breathe. However, The Skin Utility Ointment from Prequel is thinner and spreads on the skin really easily. I love to use the Skin Utility Ointment on my lips but I might try to Slug with it as well. :)
Best slugging products are Dr Jart Cicapair Sleeping Mask and Abib rice and probiotics sleeping mask. Amazing creams that really have helped me ❤
I’ve been using your prequel ointment for slugging. I love it.
I’m an ER nurse and we use petroleum jelly instead of topical antibiotics on wounds.
I fight in a Filipino Muay Thai league and they put Vaseline on my face cuts when I’m fighting! It heals my cuts and makes my skin what girls say “glow”😂
I have done slugging and highly recommend it. I’m going to send this video to my sister who insists that petroleum is carcinogenic.

Hands down the best daytime slug is the CeraVe Skin Renewing Gel Oil! It’s the only thing that helps when I get flaky from Tretinoin
Where do u buy it from
@ I know Ulta has it!

Thanks for the detail and showing us how to do it. I learn by watching and I admit, I was 'this can't be all there is to it' but apparently it is. Thumbs up, new subbie.
I like to use either Vaseline or Weleda Skin Food, and BloomEffects Royal Tulip Nectar is Great to use, but it's pricey, so not often.
I use diaper rash cream. Triple paste. Works great
Funny story- I really don't know where I got it from because my mom has never really been into skincare, but at least once when I was under 2, I put Vaseline all over my face.
Thank you, Dr Ellis. Very informative!
Good info. Dr. Ellis, thank you 😊
Dr sam ellis thank you for your very informative video ❤ xx
I have tried it. I did it all throughout the fall last yr but hated how it felt. I live in the deep south, so I skipped it during the late spring and throughout early fall. Temps and the air are something else down here 😅! This winter though, I started using Cetephil or CereVe over my skin care routine, I mostly focus on hyperpigmentation ingredients, and they do not bother me! I especially prefer CereVe
I found La Roche Posay Cicaplast light enough but still working for me when I'm adding this slug layer. Pure petrolatum ointments were to heavy for my prone skin
thank you so much for this video! can you do a video on sugaring soon :)
Should the Vaseline be washed off in the morning or just rinse face and go with serum, vi t. C , ect. Thanks Dr. ❤
Could I use Castor oil?
Great question!!
Thank you for this very informative video!!
I just love you! Beauty and brains! I love my Prequel cleanser and my vitamin C serum btw! Great!!
(We'll skip over what happened with petrolatum suppositories, just say I was a miserable bunny for a week.)
France considers petrolatum to be level ll carcinogenic, but I still have to read the fine print on every cosmetic and lotion.
is it okay to slug when your skin is purging?
Why does every TH-cam video say “ let me know down in the comments”. The like 99% of the time there are zero responses?
is it safe to apply cerave healing ointment on my eczema wound overnight?
Can you please make a video about ingredients soothing for sensitive skin ?
And… what the heck is slugging?!?!
Do I have to wash off the slug in the morning if I am really dry??
Ive been loving it lately and am shocked its actually improving all my skin issues each day i do it. However, ive been washing my face in the morning after and am still struggling with dry skin half way through the day
I’ve used Bio Oil. Is that considered slugging? My very dry skin seems to thrive and I can tell when I don’t use it.
What to you think of skin basting with with diaper rash cream?? Have heard lots of mixed reviews.
Does Prequel ship to Canada? I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't seem to find it..
Thanks for the info
Would you recommend slugging for psoriasis?
A cosmeticsl girl at the pharmacie said that slugging deshydrate ??
What about normal basic Vaseline is that carcinogenic?
Slugging for the neck?????
Thank you!
Does castor oil fall under “slugging”? I’ve been doing my usual nighttime routine and lastly pressing castor oil/frankencense/rosehip oil onto my skin. It’s felt absolutely amazing, but I’ve been nervous to layer it over retinA or glycolic acids.
Shouldn’t be an issue when it comes to irritation since it’s not very occlusive!
hi doc, can I use tretinoin on a 6w old scar?
You look like Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy
how do you feel about zinc oxide...i mix it with aquafor and find it soothing

My bf’s mom recommended to apply Vaseline on his face when he started getting pimples and now his face look like a pizza 🍕😿 turned out he got rosacea and slugging made it worst imo :( now he is taking antibiotics in pill form and topically 💔
