  • The term "slugging" refers to using a petrolatum-based product as the last step in your skin care routine to "seal-in" all the moisture from your skincare products. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jenny Liu goes over the popular skin care trend, as well as what products she recommends.

    I am 72 years of age.
    Have been using vaseline since the age of 18.
    It was the only product that I could afford.
    I don't have 1 wrinkle.

      Every night, I apply under the eyes and on lips. Faithfully.
      During our Canadian winters, when skin is prone to drying out, I apply vaseline to face and neck. Faithfully
      Sunscreen is important as well.
      I have developed cold urticaria (sensitivity to cold). In order to go outside, my allergy specialist suggests smearing vaseline all over my body and proceeding to put woolley underclothing on.
      I kayak, so I use vaseline on my hands. It's natural protective properties against the elements, keeps my hands looking younger.
      Thank you for reaching out.
      Stay well

    I always loved Vaseline for the longest time due to having atopic dermatitis/eczema, and this is despite really hating the greasy feeling of most of the thicccccc moisturizers typically recommended for dry skin (Nivea creme, Bioderma atoderm creme or baume, etc). I always felt protected when using it and it felt like my skin was finally getting a chance to rest and relax when I applied Vaseline. Now I never really slugged, only used it on dry patches and the lips, but recently I started slugging using either baby mineral oil or generic white petrolatum, and my skin feels a lot at ease and far more soft and supple now.

    Eczema-prone, acne-prone, sensitive and dry skin here. After my second eczema flare and seborrhea this year due to the trigger of contact dermatitis due to a popular gentle cleanser, I'm able to slug safely. I just need to make sure that my skin is clean/ washed with cleanser prior slugging. And I use the cerave moisturizing cream, aveeno eczema itchy balm and vaseline. I only slug opposite of my adapalene routine during off days. I can no longer tolerate salicylic acid wash even 0.5 percent and glycolic toner 7% (using those few times a week for one to two years). I can only use cerave benzoly peroxide wash in AM and adapalene in PM.

    Thank you for this informative video! I love to use the slugging technique to heal my dry hands. Overuse of hand sanitizer and harsh soaps can impair the skin barrier on our hands, the winter dry and cold conditions can exacerbate this condition. I apply a thicker Aveeno cream on my hands at night, apply Aquaphor healing ointment on top, and cover my hands with thin cotton gloves for the night. In the morning, my hands feel and look healthy again. I also apply Aquaphor to my lips and around my eyes prior to using my Adaplene at night.

I used to use up until two weeks ago my tretinoin around my eyes followed by moisturizer then 20-30 min later Vaseline or aquaphor. I never had any irritation. Available studies don't appear to support that idea. If you want to research, start with Googling "review of data on the dermal penetration of mineral oils and waxes used in cosmetic application," then go from there.
      Doctors can be wrong. They can misunderstand available information. They can hold biases and cling to ideas that fit their pre-conceived notions just like the rest of us. As a group, their potential for collecting useful, accurate info is high, but individually, they can be just as problematic as the average Joe -- that's why second opinions are a thing.
      And I'm not sure why you seem to believe that some other organic product being potentially absorbed into the liver is a good thing. Why would jojoba work better in the liver than petrolatum?
      Regardless, studies show petrolatum does NOT end up in the liver. And further, petrolatum (and petroleum products in general) are literally both organic in the classical sense and completely natural. Of course, crude oil can carry compounds you wouldn't want anywhere near your skin, but after adequate processing, that's no longer a concern. You see, ANY natural (I.e. not synthetic) product has the potential to harm. Think of clays: something we consider perfectly neutral and beneficial in cosmetic applications still has to be refined and tested to ensure that what we've dug out of the ground to slather on our skin doesn't contain harmful ingredients. Petroleum products are no different.

    Maybe I missed it but what’s the difference between 100% petroleum jelly and Petrolatum ?

    • @AMcDub0708
      @AMcDub0708 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Petrolatum and petroleum jelly are actually the same thing. They are both semisolid mixtures of hydrocarbons. The term "petrolatum" is actually a more technical term for petroleum jelly, which is often used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. So, in terms of their chemical composition, petrolatum and petroleum jelly are identical.

    Can you use hyaluronic acid before slugging?
    What about peptide serum?

    • @joyduncan9434
      @joyduncan9434 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not a dermatologist but the rule is the more liquid a product is the order it should be put on your sin and hyaluronic acid is liquid so that would be first then a moisturizer , being creamy, and ending with slugging product ( I use petroleum jelly on some of my face ).

    Isn't Petrolatum bad for health in general?...our skin absorb everything and it goes directly to our blood...

      No it isn't you put your regular moisturiser on your face first then add a thin layer of vaseline which then keeps mpisture locked in.

    • @dr.jennyliu

      The concept or use of petrolatum itself doesn’t but everyone’s skin is different

    • @msk-qp6fn
      @msk-qp6fn ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am milia and acne prone. From my experience, it generally really depends on my skin's state and stress level. It's why I general prefer to use vaseline during the night when I am able to relax and my body temperature does not fluctuate much from external reasons.

    I’m just so confused how a petroleum a byproduct from the oil industry just blows my mind. Please help me understand when we have healing healthy butters. Not that Korean women don’t have a beautiful edge

    • @candycottrell6469

      Vaseline sits on the skin as an occlusive, it provides an irritant free barrier for your skin. Hospitals have been using it for burn patients and as she said it is a good ointment for cuts etc. Butters do not provide that. Think of it as a shield for your skin keeping moisture in and environmental irritants out.

    • @dr.jennyliu
      @dr.jennyliu  ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Pimples take on the orders of few weeks to develop. What you see the next day is merely ones that is ready to erupt and not from slugging. Now if you’ve been slugging for fee weeks and then see increased in pimples then that could be more of a possibility

      They are two different words for two potentially different products. Not all petroleum jelly is cosmetic grade and appropriate for skin, but all petrolatum is.
