Building the Best Damn GMC Motorhome Ever E.22 - LED Light Wiring + Power Washing

  • I prioritized getting the front lighting situation finalized so that the GMC stays road legal in case I need to move it or drive ti somewhere to get work done on it. Because of the amber halo on the new headlight assemblies the stock amber turn signals/running lights were redundant, weak, and an eyesore. I replaced them with 4 fog lights. Physical installation was the easy part. Wiring was a trick.

    Use solid state relays... don't need to use the old slow science with coils and magnets. No latency, no delay.

      I forgot to mention in the video that all the NC (normally closed) SSRs that I could find cost $29-$58 meaning at least $100 to be spent just to get the running lights to blink. It's not worth it. There is a perfectly good blinker right above on the mirror which costs me nothing to wire up.

    This chanel is very important to our household as we are renovating a gmc motorhome....and no one j las vegas wants to work on it so we are going 95% ourselves.

    All drains need a vent to drain properly. And the tank needs its own vent. It’s the only way that atmospheric pressure can get to the ‘vent side’ of the column of water. And as that slug of sink drain water heads to the tank, you have to vent the tank too to make room. You might think you could tee the two vents together above the sink drain tee, but air flow would be required in both directions simultaneously. Hope that makes sense.

    I follow A Life Of Lind and he has recently bought a 70s Barth RV and a bus. I think people love unusual and older stuff as modern cars and super cars are boring and predictable. Many channels that are predominantly about older cars from the 60s to the 90s are hugely popular such as Furious Driving, HubNut and Idriveaclassic here in the UK and Aging Wheels, Big Al’s Bike & Auto and Mustie1 over there are great examples of this. This stuff is so much more unpredictable and interesting - it really appeals to so many in a nostalgic way too. Looking forward to your continuing projects and love the LED upgrades. Using modern tech on retro vehicles but in a sympathetic way is brilliant!

    I’ll give you this tip! During these cvid times, people are looking for videos to get into a hobby, learn something, or be persuaded into doing something. Many people were persuaded to buy sprinter vans and convert them into tiny homes. Many people bought 3D printers because of how cheap they’ve gotten and are learning how to use them. And others have got their new hobbies. I think your video of this restoration may persuade people to do the same or similar.

    Don’t know how I missed this video…you do a really great job putting something together that is interesting and informative. I’m in the middle of fixing all the mechanical issues on my GMC. It’s been up on jack stands for a year now, like a can of worms…I start a project and find more stuff to be done. These motor homes are great and a forward design, I love it ! I really like the design you came up with for your front lighting, you are correct it does look much meaner. I may copy your idea. Thanks for all the work you are doing to put these videos out.

    I think you should continue doing both 3D printing tutorials as well as GMC motorhome videos, 2 interesting subjects to watch. I’ve been interested on how to 3D print items as well as trying to make a decision on whether to get involved with a GMC motor home. I’ve always liked them, and now the nostalgia old school simplicity of them attracts me more. Good luck on your videos. 👍🍀

    I definitely think the top should be white. You could paint it all white and then put stripes, as wide as you want and almost any color or pattern. on the sides/front/back with vinyl wrap. They claim that the vehicle wraps last 3-6 years. You can DIY it or pay someone.

    Leave it to GM to devise a wiring system that breaks all of the rules! A typical relay of the size you would be using operates in about 100ms (1/10 of a second) so relays will not adversely the operation of your blinkers.

  • @JoeHenry734

    Could you get a housing with two LED's for the side marker? Have them wired in parallel with opposite polarity, then one or the other would light at the right time.

    • @gadi70
      @gadi70 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leds don't usually like reversed polarity, altough the current wouldn't be too high on that case.

  • @blackhat4968
    @blackhat4968 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wondered about getting 2 lights for each side markers, one for Running lights and a second for the turn signal. So they are wired separately. (I did not look at your wiring diagram to see if that's possible, but it would seem to be.)

  • @JohnDStrand
    @JohnDStrand 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another great video! Thanks!
    I'm no plumber, but that extra vent pipe might be needed for regulations that don't let you vent waste and kitchen off the same pipe? It would be interesting to go down that rabbit hole.

    • @gadi70
      @gadi70 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is huge possibility to a vacuum inside the RV while driving with window or another hatch open. You certainly wouldn't want all of the waste fumes filling the cabin.

  • @freman

    If you're happy for the running lights to run dimmer, you could run your side lights one leg to ground, the other leg goes to both the turn signal and the running light switch, just put a diode and resistor (optional but recommended) in line from the running light and a diode in line from the indicator
    go to www.falstad.com/circuit/
    go file
    import from text
    Paste the contents of this pastebin 0paste.com/255496

    Could you use a bridge rectifier for the turn signal? This converts "alternating voltage" (in your case alternating polarity) to single polarity voltage. The bridge rectifier has 4 terminals, 2 for the input and 2 for the output. The input doesn't care about the polarity but the output is always the same single polarity and would only drop around 2V which should not matter for yuor LED lights Much simpler than relays..

    • @TheDirty360
      @TheDirty360 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a hobbiest and haven't thought about it too hard, but ya, seems like a full bridge rectifier would work fine.

    • @gadi70
      @gadi70 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      YES! Use bridge rectifiers (or combination of four diodes). Just check that the wattage is enough for those small led blinkers. They'll cost around $0.10-$1.00 per piece and will be thousands of times more durable than relays. Simply wire plus and minus leads to the leds correctly, and the two AC (~) leads for the input, then you have a LED without the need for correct polarity. Works also with AC-powered systems (older motorcycles etc).

    The answer to the side marker/turn signal repeater problem is Daniel Stern's DRL-1 module, wired in reverse. I am not connected to him, just a satisfied customer (installed this on my UltraVan #500). www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/markerflash/markerflash.html

  • @leifgiering
    @leifgiering 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't find a clear answer online, but I think those turn signals may be blinking a bit too slow to be legal. A quick google search claims that the minimum is 60 blinks per minute, although I couldn't tell if that was specific to a certain state, or even the US at all. Might be a good idea to check with the state just in case.

    • @IndustriousPursuits
      @IndustriousPursuits  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good catch! The battery was almost dead when I filmed this. On older vehicles with mechanical blinkers low battery causes slower on/off cycles. They actually function with a 1 second period 500ms on then 500ms off. I'm going to talk about it in the video this week.

    I’m not understanding this part. You were spending lots and lots of time to use a new and somewhat hokey light system.
    I don’t understand why. I would just use the old style bulbs rather than going through all this time and energy.

    I hope you got through it. And I’m sorry if my opinion is wrong or upsetting.

    Here's a question for you. Are these channels your primary source of income? If not then do what you like and don't let the viewers direct you on what they want to see. If you start to do things for them and not yourself then you might not be happy and the channel will suffer.
