GMC Motorhome LED Turn Signals

- I have been replacing all the lights with LEDs and I saved the turn signals for last because I wasn't sure what to do about the flashers. It turns out it wasn't very hard to figure out and they work great. I'm very happy with the results of this upgrade and I think the bright LED lights improve visibility and safety too!

Thanks for posting this very useful video. I ordered the parts that you found to work the best.
I had already installed an OPT7 LED brake light, reversing light, and turn signal light strip to the back of the blinds in the rear window of our 1973 GMC Motorhome, but replacing the old incandescents with. LEDs as you did here, will make stopping, turning, and reversing a whole lot safer.
I'm posting a quick video of the LED lightstrip in action plus how I wired it into the existing harness in a month or so when I have some time -- and good weather!
Good luck with the project, I've been very happy with the LED lights, much better visibility. I like the idea of a middle brake light.

I'm glad you found it useful. I put this project off for a long time because I wasn't sure how to do it. I'm really happy with the results!
In my experience, renewing the reflective surface with adhesive aluminum tape is a better solution than "chrome" paint.
I guess that will be my back up plan if the paint doesn't work :-)
@@MrGMCMotorhome Paint is ok, but metal foil tape is a whole lot more reflective. It does however require a touch of geometrical ingenuity to place it correctly! Nothing you couldn't handle I'm sure ha ha
You did not mention anything about the front parking/flasher lamps and the front side marker lights, but you showed the front flashers at the end of the video. How did you handle the front side marker lights? They should flash alternately with the front flashers. GMC used the current flow differences between the front parking and flashing filaments and the lower current side marker lamps to make them flash alternately. The side marker lamps must be Dual Polarity LED lamps. You will likely have to add resistors to the front lamps to make it work properly. I cheated and just left the front parking/flasher lamps as incandescent bulbs and all works fine. Someday I will address the current requirements to make LEDs work on the fronts as well.
Hi Bruce, Thanks for the great question. I saw other comments like this when I was trying to figure out how to do the LED turn signals and hazard lights. I had installed LED (194) bulbs on the side markers a while ago and they were working normally before I got into this project. After installing the LED parking/turn signal bulbs and flashers, I tested them and they worked normally without any other modifications. The front markers and turn signals do flash in an alternating pattern. I'm not sure why mine work when others seem to have problems with this. If I have problems in the future, I'll be sure to do an update.
When I hook the flasher relay the way you showed on your video both of my turn signal lights on the dash came on any ideas what it might be
Hmm, good question and I’m not sure of the cause. It sounds like the flasher relay is stuck closed. Did you get the same flasher relay that I used? It may also be something different with your wiring. I never know if my coach to truly stock has been changed over the years. There may be a circuit drawing on the old and new relays that you can match up to get the right wires on the correct terminals. I also saw that you posed in one the Facebook groups, maybe we will get ideas there.
