Building the Best Damn GMC Motorhome Ever E.14 - Fixing the Steering

  • What was supposed to be a straight forward bolt in job turn a lot more complicated when I realized how many of the seals were damaged. As I keep finding out these parts were either impossible to get or prohibitively expensive. Thankfully I have a 3D printer, and some CAD software.

    I’ve had my steering box rebuilt three times! Finally, I removed the culprit; I disconnected the wipers. The filter or the wiper mechanism itself gets clogged and puts back pressure on the steering box blowing out the top seal. It’s cool, but if you’re going to keep it, you might be able to rebuild it by printing some of the plastic parts inside that there are no replacement parts for.

    I love these GMCs, I love watching your videos, and I love that you seem to jump right in and get the job done. It worries me a bit that you’re not sure what you’re doing while working on the steering though. Those pinch bolts slide into a groove that’s machined into the shafts. Safety features....

    I know the last thing you need is another projected added onto the work load of the motorhome, but..... When you start doing the interior at least consider for a moment a raspberry pi android auto setup. Many have used a raspberry pi + touch screen to give them a modern car setup. For less than a hundred bucks one can setup navigation, stereo and backup camera with a raspberry pi project. Granted we all see projects through the eyes of what in our proverbial tool belt and of course I'm pretty slick with electrical and computers so this is why I suggest such. So although it might not be something you're interested in doing at least let it rattle around in your mind for a moment.

    Very informative. Well produced. With regard to steering box, did GMC's service procedure (centering, etc.) determine you needed to have it rebuilt or did you have it rebuilt for another reason? Wondering if I may need to do the same. Again, very helpful.

      It's not like the news would have you believe. All that crap happens in like 9 city blocks. The rest of the place is business as usual. I wouldn't even know what's going on there except that I watch the news same as you. They want us to believe that a civil war is imminent when both sides of the skirmishes are probably paid homeless HS dropouts there to make it look like our society is falling apart. The problem with the world is that Autocracy is winning over Democracy. Belarus, China, Putin, and even our own president has a very small cabinet. This is the single greatest video I've ever seen on the subject. th-cam.com/video/rStL7niR7gs/w-d-xo.html Go Democracy! Go Capitalism! (Not this cheating quasi capitalism of the CCP in China).

    If you ever need to separate that shaft, pull the bolt out fully... the shaft probably has a notch cut in it for the bolt to partially trap it, so it can loosen a bit before falling out.

    Unless I missed it...did you find that the steering was loser then comfortable? So when you put in the steering did you tighten it up? And if so does it cause the steering not to over react. I’m new to all this and a very much Neophyte to all of this. I find in the wind I am oversteering.

    Yes that flange area you zip tied probably is not as vital to be totally tight as a CV boot would be but still you can just squeeze clear silicone over the bottom flange zip tie holes, The flexible durable inexpensive type of silicone I use for that kind of thing is for windows and it is also the least expensive on amazon, but also any rtv gasket maker silicone can be used.

    Seriously - I really appreciate your videos. I have a ‘77 GMC Kingsley. Have you considered putting up a store to sell the 3D printed components you’ve made? I would buy the mirror mounts for example.

    • @IndustriousPursuits
      @IndustriousPursuits  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm drowning in things to do. I can't justify the time making a 3D printed parts store. The mirrors to go along with the mounts are no longer available, but if you do find the mirrors and want to get those printed, I'm sure you can find someone to print them for you. The geometry is linked in the description of that video.

    Applied GMC (Jim K) has that filter listed. Also, if after you get that going you find the splined shaft is still too loose, there is a great replacement setup you can get parts for from a company called Borgeson. Check out this older youtube from someone who did it: th-cam.com/video/dxgtqSMwjgQ/w-d-xo.html , I did this and it worked fantastic and cheaper than a rebuilt original.

    so, I did about 5 minutes of googling for you. I found this site ( www.bdub.net/manuals/PartsInterchange.pdf ) which apparently has equivalent parts to your filter. One of those parts was a Delco PF-883. Then, I found this forum to go find a Delco PF-883 ( www.pirate4x4.com/threads/who-what-sells-power-steering-oil-filter.253406/ ) and someone on there said they had some luck at Lee Power Steering, but that was 16 years ago ( leepowersteering.com/collections/all-products ) Good luck! Hope this helps.
