I've done revivals on both power stroke and idi. Never really much to it. Biggest thing with these is undoing all of the hackwork other people have done in the past, and because these things are so robust people tend to neglect maintenance on them. My personal 95 7.3 f350 cclb 4x4 has about 10 grand worth of engine work done to it, king ranch interior, sound system and a dually swap. It is a absolute hoss. 310,000 miles and still puts in work. Best truck I ever had.
In regards to your question, It has a lift pump in the valley that pulls diesel from the tank, its fwd towards front of engine/under the turbo. Injectors are fired from a HPOP. Your start issue could be just air in the lines still, or bad fuel still in the lines, would need to be driven to clear it all out, or the unfortunate part the hpop is bad you'd need to see your hpop psi while cranking, or your IPR % while cranking, being its low miled it probably isn't the hpop but anything possible, sometimes just changing the oil really smooths the start process out. I have owned tons of 7.3s and none have started that long under normal circumstances.
I have yet to name mine it's a 01 chevy 3500hd truck (the ones with 10 lug wheels and 19.5's) some guy previously rammed a 12v cummins into it and did a poor job of it its got a twin line twin cylinder jerr dan box on it.

"I wish this was a 460 gas" Puts fresh fuel, new batteries and a starter solenoid in it and has a good running Powerstroke, which is superior in every way to the gasser. Some people....
Seriously. I wouldn’t take a 460 for free. That powerstroke gets literally double the mileage, more power and will run a half million miles. The 460 might go high miles but you couldn’t afford the gas to find out.
@@jessepitt you do realize a gas engine that gets 12 mpg cost about the same in fuel as a diesel that gets 18. diesel is about 50 cents more a gallon. i know my ctd is no cheaper than my old 6.0 chevy.
On that truck. It would be more likely to be a bad or sticking IPR on the back of the fuel pump housing. If there were a high pressure oil leak to prevent the engine from running/starting, it would be immediately obvious (as it supplies a couple thousand PSI to the injectors).
Great revival! Fun watch again!! I recommend with any turbo to let it idle for at least a couple minutes after driving to cool down the turbo before shutting it off. Will make it last longer and not burn out the bearings in the turbo.
love the diesel revivals, and the Fsuperduty is basically the F450 of that day, it was only available in a manual transmission too so that is why its a manual in a tow truck. 1994 was when the Powerstroke came out. nice score on 2 7.3 diesels though, great video, junk vehicles are the best to look at by far
Actually, the F-SuperDuty, even it was released in 1994.5 with the Powerstroke, it was available with an E40D automatic. My parents have one that is a tow truck, is a 94.5, and with an automatic.

I just realized.. Mook kinda reminds me of a bit more cheerful Violet from The Incredibles. Is that just me? Love the videos, keep the wrenches turning!
So on the hard starting I'm sure you are getting air in the fuel somewhere and the extended cranking is the mechanical fuel pump trying to expel said air... I'm sure some will argue but a 95 powerstroke had a mechanical fuel pump right behind the filter bowl, I think they went electric in 1998 or 99. Also the powerstroke having the oil operated injectors is very sensitive to the cleanliness of the oil and filter so a service may make it easier to start and if it ever gets more than a gallon low of oil it will not run because the high pressure pump wont build enough pressure to fire the injectors. Also when you replace the glow plugs be warned they are under the valve covers and the wires for the injectors and glow plugs all feed through the gasket surface so make sure you get the gaskets that include the harnesses and pigtails to save yourself some trouble and replace all the glow plugs at the same time with motorcraft ONLY if you cheap out and use autolites the next time you'll be pulling the heads to change them, ask me how I know.
We've put a bunch of Dieselrx plugs in the powerstrokes they seem to be a good brand. Seems like as long as it's quality aftermarket parts they work good.

That fuel bowl has a drain valve. Yes newer diesels are hard. But reliable. Yes the injector pump builds up oil pressure for injector. I think is like 500 psi. Also there is sensor that goes bad on them. Had to replace one to. Is fairly easy to get at. Check fir oil seepidge on connector.

@daniel bean - No need to get snippy. It may have been a bit of an overgeneralization, but with only 2 rear tires they would most likely be overloaded, which is bad enough with know GOOD tires (obviously these aren't). Also SRW 1 ton trucks have a lower rear axle weight rating than duallies.

But to reply to your childish temper tantrum I own a 01 GMC 3500hd the old body style with a Cummins it's a factory wrecker I also own a 08 f350 srw with a 6.4 a 97 ram 3500 hd cummins and several others so yes I have seen the underside of a 3/4 ton vs a 1 ton.
Yes you're right. It cranks till it gets out pressure because the fuel system uses a HPOP, high pressure oil pump, to feed it the pressure necessary to get to fuel flowing, low oil pressure=low fuel pressure
Affirmative! The oil pressure drives the injectors, you have some work to do on that. Good luck! I'm glad you got it running. Let me know if you need a class on how to use that truck, I've been a tow truck driver for 26 years! 😁👍
The injectors themselves are fed pressure from the hpop. (High pressure oil pump) it's fuel pump is "basically" a regular fuel pump. (70 psi) Glow plugs remain ON after starting to aid warm up. Should be a yellow lever on fuel bowl to drain water. Careful injectors fire with like 110volts. Icps (injector pressure control) valves are problems on them.
Yes it is oil pressure driven. You have the low pressure oil pump that brings the oil up out of the oil pan. And the high pressure oil pump that drives the injectors
If its a powerstroke it has HEUI injectors. Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injectors. They require at least 500 psi of oil pressure to operate. The engine has a low pressure engine lube pump and a high pressure pump for the injectors. These engines always take some cranking to start.
They are great trucks and kind of hard to find these days. I have a 97 w/ a 460. The worst part on this truck is the parking brake. they use a ZF unit that is mounts to the transmission. They are a pain to rebuild and have to be completely removed and disassembled to do the simplest fix. If you break a 5 dollar spring, it could cost you 600 to 1000 bucks to get it fixed and most states require parking brake to pass inspection. If you do run into this problem, and as long as they have been sitting I'm sure you will, there is an outfit in Texas that sells complete modernized units at half the cost of OEM ....If you can still find one from Ford. Good luck Diggs
Yeah she reminds me of my late wife. Something about a gal that brings her own auto ramps into the relationship and on those times where you do take it to a shop just standing back and watching when the mechanic tries to pull " women don't know anything about cars " bit and her proving otherwise.
7.3 power strokes injectors are oil driven. They need a certain amount of oil pressure for the injectors to start firing fuel into the cylinders. I would check the high pressure oil pump and see how much pressure it’s making because those motors are very fussy when it comes to oil.
I'm late to the party here, but you got a steal of a deal. Those trucks are both gems in the towing world. Both are equipped with Challenger 4800 wrecker bodies, which are predecessors to the modern day JerrDan bodies. As far as I know, both iterations of the 7.3, the stroker and IDI, are what's known as HEUI engines, (High Energy Unit Injection) and both rely on good oil pressure, supplied by the HPOP(High Pressure Oil Pump) to "fire" the injectors. If the HPOP was bad in either of them, neither would run. Diesels can be intimidating at first, but truthfully, aren't that complicated, and very reliable over the conventional 460 of the same era.
Additionally, you have what's called tunnel boxes ahead of the tow bodies themselves. Great for all kinds of storage of chains, wood blocking, and other misc "tools of the trade" when it comes to towing.
And yes, F-Super Duty was the predecessor to the F450/550 line of trucks. The name change occured when the "roundbody" (99-07) trucks came onto the scene, and the 450/550 badge was adopted for the medium duty chassis by Ford.
And one more tip from a upstate NY Rustbelt wrencher: Brake Clean is your best friend when taking care of any kind of asshole bees. 10x better than any off the shelf bee killer. Can play target practice with the little spray tube atrax8 to the can. They're dead before they hit the ground.

Icp to ipr correlation numbers will tell alot. I bet it's just air in the fuel system and will just have to purge.

Kinda looks like the diesels are easier to get running if you have clean fuel system. Hmmmmmm. 👍
It’s because they run on dirtier fuel.

Over 450,000 on my 01.
I bought a few trucks with high miles and they run pretty much perfect still. A 99 f250 that has 343k and a 03 lb7 duramax of all things with 358k and I even have a 6.5 idi turbo diesel truck with 296k.

Puts fresh fuel, new batteries and a starter solenoid in it and has a good running Powerstroke, which is superior in every way to the gasser.

Seriously. I wouldn’t take a 460 for free. That powerstroke gets literally double the mileage, more power and will run a half million miles. The 460 might go high miles but you couldn’t afford the gas to find out.

Way to go guys stepping out of your comfort zone and finding a way to get her done.
The extended crank is not normal. It either has a high pressure oil leak, or the fuel bowl is leaking down.
Can it be glow plug heat solenoid
I'd say weak glow plugs
On that truck. It would be more likely to be a bad or sticking IPR on the back of the fuel pump housing. If there were a high pressure oil leak to prevent the engine from running/starting, it would be immediately obvious (as it supplies a couple thousand PSI to the injectors).
The high pressure oil reservoir could be leaking back to the pan via its check valve stuck.
I would check that seal you put on top of the filter housing. I needs to go around the lid on the lip at the top of the threads.
Great revival! Fun watch again!! I recommend with any turbo to let it idle for at least a couple minutes after driving to cool down the turbo before shutting it off. Will make it last longer and not burn out the bearings in the turbo.
18:22 Whoever thought of putting smokestacks on it is a freaking genius 🤣👌
love the diesel revivals, and the Fsuperduty is basically the F450 of that day, it was only available in a manual transmission too so that is why its a manual in a tow truck.
@@tonycartland8757 oh okay, i always thought the F-superduty only got the ZF5. ive never seen on with an E4OD before though either. yeah 94 was a crossover year, i would prefer a turbo IDI myself for simplicity and cheaper parts though
He didn't do the neutral wiggle that's why I didn't start
I forget every noun and then and I end up starting in gear a lot ._.
Because the red truck is a dually and it only says “super duty series”, the truck is most likely an f450 or an f550
It's a F450 10 lug of the 90s
Daniel Preston it’s an f350 I know my fords not to be rude
He's right those are 10 lug trucks while the f350 have 8 lugs
I'm talking about the red one the black it a 350
Patrick Saur you're not rude at all, but it is a 10 lug compared to an 8 lug, has more leaves than the black truck, and like I said, it is not marked as a 350, while the other one is marked as a 350. Which makes it either a 450 or 550
As soon as you said the black one has no keys...i hear ol peg leg say in the back of my head saying "you don't have to worry about no keys" lol just need a leatherman
I could use my 87 Thunderbird keys to move my friends 94 escort. He use to get so pissed. The door was tricky had to wiggle it alot but the ignition never fought

You should get ahold of wes from watch wes work. He knows those ford diesels like the back of his hand. He could give you some good info.
Agreed !
Lil tip don’t use starting fluid in a diesel it will eventually become addicted and need it to start and possibly crack a piston
I think he did a few videos taking apart the high pressure oil system used to actuate the injectors. I think those could help.
Steven Allison I believe Wes is in the middle of a F450 diesel ambulance right now. I think he’s in northwestern Illinois
Thus begins the story of Junkyard Digs offshoot channel, "Repo with Angus"

The revivals on these tracks introduced me to your channel. Love them and all your videos.
If its a powerstroke it has HEUI injectors. Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injectors. They require at least 500 psi of oil pressure to operate. The engine has a low pressure engine lube pump and a high pressure pump for the injectors. These engines always take some cranking to start.
The super duty is what a F450. Was called when they came out in 1988. I bought one new.
Man they are some tough old sob's too
They are great trucks and kind of hard to find these days.
