I love how this "easy" video got way more complicated, but you were willing to do it and not just say, "Whelp, that's all, folks." That is really interesting about that case for the DJI Action 2, though.

@@DavidManningvlog I'm glad you stuck it through. I think it turned out great. Now, which battery did you run in the GoPro, the regular or the endurobattery? Wonder if that would have any effect? I know it's more a firmware thing, still something to ponder as well.

Note that the Action 2 will last longer in both Standard and High modes if ONLY the camera module has the cover installed (e.g. keeping the screen or battery module uncovered), as the additional module (without the cover) helps dissipate heat (and avoids the issue of the camera just popping off that you mentioned!)

I had no idea the plastic case helped with heat! I bought it for mine when they launched it and I loved it for extra protection. Lol.
Just finished the rest of the video and I didn’t even test how easily that bottom piece comes out of the case. The top part is secure as hell though. I had a hell of a time popping that thing out the first time.

Both cameras are amazing in what they accomplish. Image quality, stabilization and functionality. I don’t do high frame rate stuff so I never have problem with my hero10. Like you said at the beginning, and I wish you would have repeated in the summary: using them as action cams and just getting short shots of 2-4 minutes at a pop, they work fine even with higher frame rates.

Hi David, well done on this comprehensive test. Being a DJI lover I considered bying the DJI Action 2. Had the chance to test it as well against the GoPro10. For my use the GoPro10 had my preference. The magnetic system was not my piece of cake as I use the cam in bumpy conditions. I did not trust it to stick. I had overheating issues with th GoPro10 but after de latest firmware update not anymore.
I tested the GoPro 10 as a dashcam, so long recording and yes it heats up, but after a recording time I never use. So GoPro10 it is for me.

Gopro is covered in a durable plastic/rubber blanket, totally waterproof without a case. I have my night lapse issues with GP cameras but Im just happy to have the worlds best consumer priced in my pocket. Naturally I would prefer power off and protect damaged components over blowing up near my privets. The possibility of you reviewing a camera this time next year that can truly see in the dark and shutting down after 17:47 recording is very near my friend. NY

Hey David, great video (actually never seen anything approaching a bad video from you). I don’t own a DJI camera, but was curious if you could just use the case on the top part and not the bottom to get the “overheat protection” but not have the mounting issue…and if possible, would it effect your overheat time…and you thought you were done with these tests…

  • @nomad0714

    Hey Dave,
Ah man, had my msg completed and YT wigged out and retying now.
Basically said I use both. GP10 for extreme sports as you only need extra batteries and some accessories such as tripods and mounts.
A2 for vlogging and family videos.
Both are great and easy gear to film.
For overheating, I’ve shared this on other posts that when you shoot long form and studio style, you cannot avoid thermal physics. Designing small form factor + weatherproof/waterproof + shooting high frames rates with stabilization, bluetooth, gps, etc will overheat at some point. Heat is trapped and cannot release.
In these use cases, I use a hack and attached with a velco + Blackshark Fun Cooler 2 Pro Magnetic version (smaller) + Volta or some battery bank tripod and you can shoot to your heart content without worrying about overheating.
As for the magnetic case, DJI uses the trigger from the Macro lens that recognizes that it is on and so you can push temps above the 53degC which is above Canada/UK/EU consumer handheld safety allowed.
Sony did this years ago, standard mode for handheld use and high mode for tripod use.
The magnetic case doesn’t disperse any heat, just ensures if you use handheld, you have a layer to not burn your hand or drop the A2 and sue DJI.
All these action cams should get into the practice to do user guide videos on their products and intended design. Otherwise YT community uses it wrongly or it’s a user error and then the bashing narrative comes. I love it because I got basically 2 A2 for the price of 1 on Ebay as people were dumping theirs.
I shoot short form as you said in this video and don’t encounter overheating but if and when I do shoot long form or on tripod, I turn off stabilization, bluetooth, gps, etc like when using airplane mode or with GP or Sony, I use tripod mode and it last a long time. And if I want to shoot over the 1hr+ mark, then strap a velcro with an active cooling fan used by gamers on smartphones and shoot all day with no restrictions.

Do you happen to use filter lenses with the action 2? I've found that the magnet is not strong enough to use on the outside with the case on and the case is not big enough to allow space for it to be attached and still fit within the case - for reference I am using Telesin ND filters, but I would imagine freewells have the same issue?

I own both and I prefer the Action 2. I live in the U.S. and I do not prefer the magnetic case. One other issue with the magnetic case is it "wobbles" around and you can hear a clicking sound in the audio which makes the case not usable unless you have an external mic IMO. I agree it is a software trick to allow for DJI to turn up the heat. There are aftermarket aluminum cases that can also help with the heat as they act as a heat sink while also giving you quarter twenty threads and cold shoe mounts. At the end of the day I just prefer the quality and software experience of DJI. GoPros are plagued with issues and I have way more problems with GoPro products versus DJI products. I also prefer the footage from DJI vs GoPro. They are both good cameras, but or me DJI is the clear winner.

@@matt_pang It’s good but I didn’t have any issues with the quality of the H10 so I may not be the best person to ask, overall I feel the Action 2 is just a more premium product in every way. But I also feel the action 2 is not a replacement for a GoPro, the Action 2 is in its own category IMO.

Hi David, I recently bought the GoPro Hero 10 to film my TH-cam channel, Bradd's Boredom Busters a textile art channel. I have only had it for a short time and only used it on a couple of videos, which means for my channel I use it stationary and indoors. I have found that it does heat up but it's never heated up enough to shut its self off. I do monitor it because of watching videos like yours that makes me aware that it get very hot. My experience is though, it's not the camera that's getting hot but actually the battery itself that heats up which heats up the camera, so when it gets hot I take out the hot battery and put in a fresh cool battery, that allows me to video for a longer length of time. You might bring this up solution in one of your future videos to make your viewers aware that it's the batterys getting hot and simply change it out to keep the camera from getting overheated. Thank you for your videos.
    Yours truly Bradd C.

My hero 9 overheats. So does my hero 8. But I was filming in 4K in 99+ degree weather. In Az. Run my cameras for 4-8 hours at a time. Using pass through power helped, but my hero 9 seems to freeze up doing that.

Tough! It's going to be hard for any camera to stay cool in that situation. On the GoPro, when doing externally powered, have you tried it without the battery inside? It allows some airflow to get to the inner bits and seems to help a ton!

  • @HajongLee

It's really hard to say which is better because GoPro could be doing the same software tweaks to let it run hotter, especially with the test you did at 4K120 in "Standard Heat" mode for the DJI. The results for 4K60 with the DJI even in "Standard Heat" mode shows that still DJI is superior but this could just mean DJI chooses not to let it run hotter at 120 whereas GoPro ups the threshold a bit. I think what would really help sort of "standardize" which is better is to see what the actual temperature the cameras are running at in all the settings up to the point before they shut off (of course this would be a crazy video). Especially with the DJI case, it would be easy to see if there's actual thermal dissipation going on by using a thermal camera or if it's really just a software tweak.

Another note that someone else commented on: High heat will damage the batteries your'e using. On the Action 2, the cam mod has a non-replaceable internal battery and the battery/screen mod are super expensive. Having your Action 2 overheat could be really bad for long term battery life, compared to the GoPro where you can just swap it out👍

  • @jeremyk2740
    @jeremyk2740 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The one thing that would make the Action 2 much more useable for me would be a waterproof battery mod with micro SD card. Exactly the same as the current battery mod but waterproof. That would be a game changer for the use-ability of the Action 2! I have the waterproof case on order but I suspect you won't be able to use the touch screen when in the case so it will end up being a bit of a pain.

true that.. I hope DJI makes one. also if or when the built in battery loses it's capacity over time, these battery modules can be purchased and used as a removable battery, if anyone is planning to keep this camera for such a long time.

I was looking at the DJI as a wearable (like the Go2) but with the overheating, not sure that is a good idea.
I currently switch between the Go2 & Hero10 as one wearable & the other on top of my camera. The GoPro is a little large for both purposes.
Maybe I will just wait for a third option. It's all just for fun.

Nice video, i'm in europe and have had a lot of overheating issues. Best way to get rid of them is recording in 30fps which is not ideal for me.
But would also metion that you didn't test the dji action 2 without power/screen combo, with and without a case. It makes the results even weirder.
The thermal case for dji sucks. The case reduces the magnet strength, making the pendant use more dangerous.
To be honest both DJI and Gopro should not advertise 4k 60 if they can't maintain it for the whole recording duration. Its like if you got a computer that can run windows 11 Crashes every 20 minutes, BUT HEY see it runs(for 20 minutes).
I do not regret purchasing dji action 2 but i do find its shortcommings to be a deal breaker for many people. As for go pro, I was dissapointed in it even more when i saw a comparison I thought it was better in terms of thermals, but i guess i was wrong.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s a tough comparison to make really. Sort of apples and oranges, ya know? These are going to have better image quality, but limited perspective. While with the Insta360, you have slightly lower image quality, but unlimited perspective. For action sports where I’m trying to film myself, I go for the Insta360 100% of the time, but if I’m trying to film someone else or get more “cinematic” of a look, then I’ll grab the GoPro. The GoPro is also less work on the back end because you don’t have to reframe the footage. But while I’ll miss shots with the GoPro, you literally cant’ miss a shot with the Insta360. So pros and cons both ways🤷‍♂️

I just bought the Action 2 from Amazon for $299 with the screen combo. Much better deal than GoPro and their stupid subscription! I’m sick of these companies nickel & diming customers with subscriptions! I’m not worried about the heat because I would never leave the camera running for 30+ minutes! That’s why I have my EOS R! GoPro had their chance…I have the Hero 3 Black and the 4 Silver and the Session…quite old….but their company greed stopped me from buy from them again!!!

On RC cars models there are some heatsink made out of aluminum and they have a fan build in and the are normally used to dissipate the heat from the ESC of the RC car, plane, boat, etc.... you can get them from Amazon or AliExpress.
I saw another video and this guy just place a magnet somewhere over the case of the camera and made the camera believe that the plastic case was placed on and it activates that middle range temp tolerance you mention, so the is a way to help the camera to cool down.
However we are talking about an action camera and if it is used as intended, then when you are in sports, in a bicycle, etc the wind should help to cool down.
I'm thinking on buy it, it is 12/10/22 and on Amazon the price just drop down to $239 and $269 with the power module and screen module....

  • @schlingelgen
    @schlingelgen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I saw a few videos where people from europe showed that the high temp option is available for them too
Regarding the results of the dji - i wouldnt say that the 5 mins in 4K/120 are a dealbreaker, because when are you filming sequences that long while needing a framerate this high? Considering that the best price for the gopro is currently at 370€ and for the action 2 240€ (Germany), its even easier to let those flaws slip.

Tbh, I'm not sure how you got that much recording time from the DJI Action 2. I tried filming with the Action 2 using 4k 120fps and I got around 3-ish close to 4 minutes of recording lol. The case was attached, and the firmware was up-to-date, so no idea. I tried turning it back on and I managed to squeeze in 2 more minutes before I couldn't record anything anymore. Sadly I returned it after that experience. :(

I use it in a smallring cage when cycling so it os more protected and just normal case in holiday. So it can be mounted in more pmces easy like POV on my kids or on head of my kids.

As someone who lives in a tropical Country, these results got me really worried!
If 21~22ºC is a hot summer day in the US and the cameras overheat that quick, I think they would be unusable on a 30~36ºC day under sun!
21ºC is considered a chilly day here.

WITHOUT Magnetic Case + Power Module: 6 min 09 sec
