DJI Action 2 Magnetic Case Tested (with unexpected results)

    The shipping time for my free magnetic case from DJI is more than a month, so I bought one from Amazon to do these tests. I tested the run times without the case, with the case, and with the magnet trick (or magnet hack) and compared the recording times and temperatures. Along this 2 day journey I learned how this case actually works, discovered some problems and got some unexpected results.

    Appreciate your tests thanks 🙏 i use my camera on motorcycle helmet so i don’t have a heat issue, saying that i have just ordered a second one. I wish dji had made it the way you said but also I’m sure they could trim a little to allow ND filters to be used. One thing i have noticed on my camera is the white balance does shift slightly sometimes giving a cooler temp then back again briefly. I’m sure the up coming firmware fixes it. Cheers Nick

  • @Ozpeter

    Congratulations on being the only reviewer who actually gets to the heart of the matter - and who makes one or two others look a bit silly in the process. One posted a 25 minute review "explaining the science being the cage", even claiming that the slightly rough exterior of it was due to that adding to the the heat dissipation that the cage provides to lengthen recording times... Anyway, let me not be catty about it. (Too late, I was).
    Big questions remain. Why was that magnetic switch there in the first place? Did DJI originally intend to sell or include the case from the outset, but manufacturing and distribution constraints meant that it's only now available? Did they deliberately wait to see what the market would tolerate in the way of overheating? Did that switch have some other original purpose? We will never know... Of course it's now open to 3rd party manufacturers to sell cages which incorporate the magic magnet, but which would be made of metal to help actually dissipate the extra heat, thus improving on the DJI freebie. I use a Ulanzi cage, and I must get around to seeing whether it does actually make a difference to running times anyway, without relying on the magnet. Or I could try to find a magnet which would work with the case fitted, and see how my times compare with yours. All interesting stuff but time consuming. So far the time consumed has largely been yours - thanks for that!
    [Edit - someone has commented in another video and explained why that sensor is in the camera in the first place. "The detector is for the macro lens. Turn on macro lens detection, and when you put on the case, it will switch to macro recording instead of detecting the case. Correction: the magnetic case should have reverse polarity compared to the macro lens, as now I can turn on either notification based on which side of the magnet I push to the camera." Now this discovery would enable someone with a heat measuring device - Roo perhaps?! - to fit the case with the macro feature turned on, thus avoiding the camera being set to run hotter, and see whether the case on its own does reduce the running temperature or actually increase it.]

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Peter, such a great comment! I was looking forward to hearing your thoughts about these test results.
      You know, when I first heard about the magnetic switch I immediately wondered the same thing; why was it there to begin with? Do they have some special, super cool accessory planned for release that the switch will activate and was it just pure luck that they were able to utilise it for this emergency fix instead?
      And now you have put forth the theory that it's there to detect the macro lens and I'm thinking "ahhh, that makes sense", until, I looked at images of the macro lens and saw that it sticks to the front. And that no part of it touches the top area where the little magnetic switch is located, just beside the power button.
      So how does the macro lens trigger that switch? Wouldn't the switch need to be behind the front face rather than behind the top surface? I think the origin story of that switch may be the final piece of this puzzle.
      I think the camera module case does help cool it when the camera module is on its own, because in my tests I got an extra minute of run time with the case than with the magnet alone. But unfortunately when the two modules are connected the bottom of the case reduces heat transfer to the lower module and the heat sink effect of that module is reduced quite dramatically.
      I watched the video you speak of. I think he presented it well and made some great points, but I didn't agree with all of them. For example, the textured surface creating more surface area which improves cooling. He's absolutely right that the rougher a surface is the larger the surface area it has, but in my opinion at the scale we are talking about with this, the effect would be impossible to detect without precise scientific temperature measuring tools. The ever so slightly textured finish on this case will not extend the run times in any meaningful way. It's too slight a texture. If it had big grooves cut into it then maybe we would have something.
      I also don't think the heat sink effect is as significant as some people think it is. An extra minute is wonderful but the temp limit increase of the firmware is doing the real trick, in my opinion. Of course I'm not an expert in this stuff, but I did do the tests so I could put some data out there with my theories.
      It has been an enjoyable journey. I was quite disappointed with this camera at first, but I have come to love it now that the heat issue is essentially solved, at least for how I use it. It's been my daily carry for the past week.

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forgot to add that I think to reverse the polarity of the magnet in the case would mean cutting it out and glueing it back in upside down. When I try the magnet trick with the magnet flipped nothing happens. I don't get any macro confirmation on the display.

    • @Ozpeter
      @Ozpeter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Roos-Reviews

      Good catch. I turned that on and now that same switch activates macro mode when the magnet's polarity is reversed. It also triggers when placing the magnet on the front face near the top.

    I just got the 128gb version and I'm getting a power drain when the camera is connected to the power module even when it's off. Say both are at 100% before I go to bed, when I wake up the camera stays at 100% but the module is at 80%.
    Do you have this issue as well? I can't tell if it's a firmware issue or is there's something wrong with either the camera or the power module.

  • @LostTravellers
    @LostTravellers ปีที่แล้ว

    Is it maybe possible that when the module is attached, due to the fact that it charges the battery in the camera at the same time, it makes it more difficult to reduce the heat from the camera (cause charging creates extra heat)? I don't think the case really helps, but just adds a higher overheat limit softwarewise, since the camera needs to recognize 'the case' before it 'works'. You said it yourself that without the case, the camera overheats at 10 degrees lower.

    Thanks for doing this review Roo! Really well put together as usual!
    So, as we expected, it's mainly a software solution with a finger protector.
    I do wonder if the image has been downgraded/reduced as part of that firmware upgrade.
    Unfortunately, I won't get the free case as I've been told by D1-Store Brunswick that you only get the free case if you purchased it originally from DJI directly :(
    But I do have a magnet I'm not afraid to use it ;-)

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Scotty,
      Haha "I have a magnet and I'm not afraid to use it".
      I was thinking, since the case is a poor fit for the power combo, as is the Smallrig polymer case, maybe that's a market gap you could fill. I really wish there was a case similar to this, but that properly hugs the power module and protects that front face too. If you made such a solution I'd be happy to buy one. I wonder if others would too.

      That's pretty piss poor service from DJI not to send out a free case. Doesn't matter where one buys it from, should be free for all, permanently. well .... first off, thank you for those throurogh tests!
    however, they show that the camera can run hotter without a problem. We know that the shutoff temps are determined by compliance, not technical limitations (in EU they had to take away the option for the higher limit because of regulations).
    This case allows them to work around that by basically removing the chance for skin to touch those hot spots, therefore they dont apply = longer recording times for the user + additional revenue for selling the case.
    so yes, its a bit weird, but i d still consider it a win-win.

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's a pity our friends in the EU will get nowhere near these run times with the new case. It seems they will only get an extra minute or two, while elsewhere we are getting double the run times.
      I think that while the aluminium now gets a lot hotter, the internal components should still be staying within safe operating limits.

    • @Ozpeter
      @Ozpeter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Roos-Reviews Emphasis on "should...". Personally I won't use the case unless I have to (I don't have any overheating issues so far with my use of the camera). Will running the camera hotter improve its lifespan or reduce it? Intuition says it could reduce it. DJI might be gambling on reduction in life not being encountered for a year or two, and then it would be quite hard to demonstrate that people using the case were definitely getting shorter life than those not using the case, because it there would be all sorts of other variables in play. We shall see...

    Did you have the temperature cutoff setting on high or normal? Does having the case just allow the camera to switch to the high temperature setting for the countries that did not allow it or does the case activate a further higher temperature. I just got my action 2 yesterday so I didn't test that rigorously but with the temp cutoff setting set to normal I actually got 1 minute less recording at 4K 30fps with the case on compared with the case off in an indoor test.

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The case doesn't help much with European models, unfortunately, because they are not allowed to go above a certain temperature. I've seen people say they only get about an extra minute. Where as on the North American models the times are massively increased because of how the case activates an even higher temp limit in the firmware (I explained how it works in a series of videos about this case).

    j'ai les cases, le problème est que si tu laisse celle-ci, pas de chargement de la batterie, si tu mets la batterei dessous, avec l'écran, cela vient des plots je pense que ça ne va pas une fois enlevé les cases, ça recharge normalement, cela ne sert à rien de mettre les cases pour recharger, c'est pas top d'enlever et de remettre d'autant plus que la durée dce la batterie de la caméra ne dure pas longtemps, déçu, pourtant cette caméra à du potentiel, mais la conception est à revoir de fonte en comble....

    Yes massive fail on their part not making the lower housing fit. I remember when GoPro cases shipped with multiple backdoors depending on what setup you ran with the camera. Come on DJI get it together and make a case that fits

      Yep, the top part is perfect, but I'm hoping for a better bottom part alternative, maybe from a third party.

    You have nice results. I expect that you use High temperature threshold. I am allowed to use only the standard threshold, but magnet or case does not make any difference compared to the naked camera. :(

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it is unfortunate. In standard temp mode the case only extends 4K60 run time by about 1 minute.

    • @RelakS__
      @RelakS__ ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol? Yesterday while I used the camera with the magnetic case on my bicycle, the camera overheated in 6 minutes. I removed the case, continued to shoot without waiting, and it made another 11 minutes. I arrived at home maybe in 9 minutes and put the camera down. In this experiment I used 4K 60fps, HorizonBalancing mode. So, it looks like that any kind of case is a no go for me, even the dji magnetic case :(

      @@Roos-Reviews I guess. I bought it in a hungarian Media Markt.
      One strange thing: I should be able to set it only to standard temperature limit. Now, that I play around with the camera, it allowed to set Hight limit. I am curious if it will stay, and does it anything with the recording lenght

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can set it to the high limit you should find that with the DJI case installed it records for much longer. The extended recording time only works when the case is detected and the high temp limit is on high. The firmware then allows the recording to go for longer.

    I find it very interesting that they intentionally built in a switch in the first place. Seems to me like a "Create a problem - provide a solution"-tactic

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One suggestion I heard is that the switch was intended for the magnetic macro lens adapter and they just dual purposed it for this overheating solution.

    The issue is that you need to do the test outside your home. The heating issues arise when the camera is static and not in the move this is action camera.

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've answered this a few times in the comments. If you take a read you'll see my explanation. But basically it comes down to the importance of doing controlled, consistent tests. That's not possible outside. When I compared the overheating speed of 4 action cameras side by side it had to be done in a controlled environment to be fair.

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was just for doing the tests. It's not really practical to have a magnet on there when using the camera. You can buy the magnets in hardware stores and Amazon, AliExpress.

      @@Roos-Reviews Why isn't it practical? Is it a temperature issue? I'm planning to superglue the magnet onto the body.

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It gets so hot that it's uncomfortable to hold. If you have air moving over it though, and you aren't holding it I suppose it could work. But there are better ways to do it than glueing the camera. For example, you could just put the case on it. For maximum run time you could connect the two modules and cut off the bottom part of the top module's case so that the two modules are connected metal to metal.

    I’d recommend anyone who is interested in the Action 2 to simply get the Osmo Action instead.
    It’s a much better reliable action camera, doesn’t overheat after a short duration, removable lens, removable battery etc

    the magnet "hack" is destructive to the internal components! DO NOT USE that magnet use the function in the proper way with the cooling case. Yes the case does help transfer heat and cool the unit because of the substrate material used for the case and surface area. Simple thermodynamics here im no expert but this is the general consensus among the "pros"

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I wasn't aware there was a consensus opinion for this already. Who are the "pros" you're getting this consensus from? I have only seen one guy on TH-cam say it damages the camera, but he didn't do any tests or show any evidence for that. I've taken lots of measurements and determined that doing the magnet trick for the purpose of carrying out these tests does not break the camera.
      I am not advising anyone to glue a magnet to the camera and use it like that instead of using the case.
      The magnet in the case activates a higher temp shutdown limit which adds an extra 8 minutes. The case itself adds about an extra minute on top of that.
