    DJI Osmo Action 2 is another controversial camera that DJI has just released. The other one was their Mavic 3 drone. It's a $519 camera for the Dual Screen, $399 for the Power Combo. Which is quite expensive for a camera that overheats. In this video compare the difference in recording times before and after firmware update V01.02.10.10 to find out if there is any difference.
    In this video, we managed to get the camera as hot as 56 degrees celcius, (133 Fahrenheit) which is pretty damn hot if you ask me.
    We also strapped the OSMO Action 2 on to a DJI FPV to see if it can extend the recording times by exposing it to lots of airflow.. Well the results are quite interesting....
    Thinking of getting an Osmo Action 2?

    Great video. Thanks for posting the results. I was hoping this issue would be fixed or significantly improved. Sadly this issue hurt the versatility of this camera. Imagine using this camera with a waterproof case.

      Thanks for watching. Look I think if you’re intending to take it swimming or scuba diving with the case. I think you’ll be okay shooting at 4K 30… think the cold water will keep the camera sufficiently cooled.

    Just for testing purposes last night, I connected it to a power bank and let it run as long as it would with normal settings that I would use... 4k 30fps /w rocksteady in a smallrig cage.
    It was up to 313 minutes straight before the power bank was about to run out of battery and it was also getting late, so I stopped it. I tried to post this previously and include a screenshot but guessing the external link caught my comment as spam and didn't post it. I have it mentioned in a thread on the DJI Action 2 forum with a screenshot of the time though.
    I could easily handle the camera at any point and felt the front of the camera/back by putting my hand around it and it wasn't hot enough to make me not want to touch it or cause harm to me. It felt just like the GoPro Hero 10 did in regards to heat. I didn't pump the frame rates above 30 myself because for me, it wasn't really something I'd need to test since I wouldn't be doing that myself.
    If I want to get higher frame rates, I'll adjust the settings and take the clips I want and then adjust it back to where I normally would be filming, which is the 4k30fps setting.
    I also know that realistically I wouldn't be having this sit no the floor or a desk with a power bank for hours on end, so the fact that it worked and didn't overheat during that test has me confident that when I'm out on a kayak that this camera will work perfectly for me.

    • @JeremyToh
      @JeremyToh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing this detailed analysis. 4K at 30fps seems to be goldilocks option, I doubt you'll get any overheat warning if your on the Kayak. When I had the Action 2 attached on the drone, it was shooting 4K at 60fps, and I managed well over 18 minutes, I did stop recording to swap the drone batteries and then hit the record button after 3 minutes of stoppage, and it went for another 18 minutes. So technically you could even do 4K at 60fps provided there is sufficient airflow.
      Thank you again, for sharing your analysis, and happy paddling!

    So glad that DJI released the protective case for Action 2 to deal with the overheating issue! I generally like its features more than the others but that was the only thing holding me back.

  • @iftibashir

    Good video ;o)
    4K120 is for capturing short bursts of slow mo for later editing - not for constant filming, especially without any airflow. Also why use EIS when you are not moving the camera at all? - again another way to work the chipset harder and hence increase heat generation.
    Im not sure how anyone could expect a firmware update to prevent heat buildup in the first instance?? You can only reduce heat by reducing your capture settings or adding some airflow. Exactly why GoPro introduced a new mode which basically switches off stabilisation and GPS - hence less heat generation. It doesn't 'fix' overheating at all, just reduces the heat generated by the chipset in the first instance.
    I've been using my Action 2 outdoors as 'normal' and never had it overheat whatsoever.

      The protective case we have in the video is from SmallRig, but yes we've also just heard that DJI is releasing their own case.

    My longest recording time is 42 mins without overheating. Though it's not an issue for me, it's good that DJI responded with a solution through the magnetic case. I'd love to have it for protection.

    • @JeremyToh
      @JeremyToh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure what's the difference between DJI's case with the SmallRig's case. I guess, we'll have to test it when it's released.
      The SmallRig case has saved my Action 2 from a few accidental drops from high places..

    2.7k 60 fps is the Goldie lock zone for this camera. You can use Topaz video enchance ai software on PC to up scale the video to 4k or 8k as long as the video is not being compressed too much.

      @@Ozpeter I get what you're saying, but that's so unfortunate. I really wanted a DJI rather than a GoPro, but I'm looking to mostly shoot cycling videos at 4K60. I live in Toronto, and our summers get pretty hot, so I'm certain overheating would be an issue for me. I wish DJI would have at least released 2 models; one less size restrained and better cooling (and a removable battery, built in SD card slot, etc.)

    • @Ozpeter
      @Ozpeter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NeutralGenericUser Well, I have to say GoPro would probably be more the tool for your particular job, by the sound of it. I shot in 4K 60 for that one, as long as the you are moving and there is airflow the Action 2 will be fine. But if it's stationary then it will get a bit uncomfortable very quickly. I also shot in 2.7K and it didn't get too hot, and kept recording until the battery died, although I didn't like the image from the the 2.7K. So in conclusion 4K 30fps maybe the Goldilocks Option. Hope that helps.
