Making a BJD alpaca wig with a fringe

  • I got a bunch of alpaca fiber for my birthday, but I'm just now getting around to cleaning it to use. I asked for this color intending to use it for Vahn, but it's both longer and darker than expected based on the listing and photos, so I'm using the darker and longer pieces for Sophie! What do you think?
Also - I'm not happy about doing it, but I will be dropping back to posting videos every other week for a while. When I started my channel, I planned to do one every other week, but I was so inspired and able to work so fast that I kept up videos every week for over a year!
I went into 2017 with a full month of videos ready ahead of time, but this year has been difficult so far and my buffer is all used up. Cutting back for a couple weeks will give me time to rebuild my buffer and my creativity levels, as well as giving me time to rest and recover and come back at 100%! With luck, I will be back full force in May. Otherwise, you'll just see me only as often as my channel's about page still says. XD

One way you can reduce the bulkiness of the fringe is to snip vertically into the ends of the fringe, it thins it out so you have less of a blunt look and it'll appear a little more natural.

The wig is so adorable, it really suits her 😊 I haven't successfully used alpaca fibre in the past and have some unprocessed in a bag somewhere. I might have to dig it out and try again. Practice makes perfect after all. Thanks for the inspiration 😊

Now that I've gotten to use it a bit more I think alpaca is one of my favorite materials, so I'd definitely encourage you to give it another try! It gets easier as you get familiar with the texture. When made into wefts I find it a lot more pleasant to work with than synthetics, though there are some looks you get with both that just can't be replicated with the other.

The fringe looks a bit bulky I tend to not put too many wefts where the fringe will be.

Mmm yeah, I can see how some people wouldn't like the bulk. :) For this particular doll I was going for the really thick, long bangs you saw a lot in the 60s, since I might try kind of a flower child look for her, but I know that's definitely not for everyone.

Great video, helps a lot! thank you for sharing! and by the way, what did you do before you glue the alpaca on? How did you make the alpaca stay together group by group? I couldn't find a video on it. i cant click link in the video

Sorry about that! I used to have annotations to link my related videos together, but when TH-cam stopped supporting annotations, many disappeared. :( The alpaca fiber is all together because it has been glued into wefts! I show how to do it in this video: th-cam.com/video/ZpOqoQDYXXA/w-d-xo.html

May I ask how do you hold the doll in place??

For the really tiny dolls, I use a little doll stand from the craft store that keeps them upright. For this one and the larger dolls I just sit them in a toy chair :) They do a pretty good job of sitting on their own, and that way I can turn them or move their head as I need to make a wig.

How do you get the Alpaca hair not to stink so badly? Do you treat it with something first? I had two bags of it and my God!! The stench was so badly I had to throw it out! How can this be resolved...same thing happens to goat hair.

Wow, I'm sorry you've had that issue! I haven't had any problems with odors at all, even when I buy the fiber raw/unwashed. It has a slight outdoorsy/dusty fragrance, but I wash it by hand with normal shampoo for humans and then it doesn't smell like anything.
