It might be a little overboard but when I go see a movie at the theater it doesn't excite me any more than it use to before I got this system.
I have updated my Sonos system (ARC+ 2 One-SL and 1 sub gen3) and added a second sub. The Sonos sub brings a great update to the whole listening experience. I did notice that the sub is somewhat directional. You always notice where the sub is in the room. By adding the second sub, this phenomenon has completely disappeared, and I experience a more homogeneous baseline.
So in setting up my Sub for my traditional 5.1 Setup in my living room that uses a receiver and a bunch of speakers, I learned that it’s best to configure the Sub where it blends in very well. I have the Sonos Arc, one Gen 3 sub and two SL's for surround. Believe me, this suffices in an awesome manner. It is a beast. It far surpasses my Bose system of 30 years (still in use elsewhere in the house) which includes two subs and surrounds.
I have the Arc, 1 Sub Gen 3 and 2 Play 5s in the living room. In the bedroom I have a Beam Gen 2, 2 One SLs and a Sub-Mini. I like both set ups but the living room set up sounds amazing for both music and movies. Having both systems allows me to contrast the two in real time. I initially had the One SLs in the living room then decided to buy a second play 5 and pair it with the one I already owned and the difference was remarkable. I set the surrounds to full mode as opposed to ambient for music playback so that they’re on equal footing with the Arc and fully utilize their great sound stage.
I have the arc, gen3 sub and two sonos ones it sounds great. May have to upgrade to the fives. My neighbor's already get upset with one sub so two would get me evicted. Thanks for the great review.
I have the arc, 2 subs, and 2 fives!! And it’s a must get! If you have the space and want to upgrade your SL ones to a bigger sound!! Think of it this way you want have to ever wonder “do I have enough sound or do I need to look any further” for years to come for a better set up or sound! TRUST it’s worth it!
I just replaced my Nakamichi 7.2.4 with the exact same set-up. Very noticeable improvement in sound quality and I was able to move the Fives back 10-12 feet away from the couch for a more immersive sound envelope. I had to put the Nakamichi rear surrounds 12-18 inches from the couch because I couldn't run the wires on the tile floor to move them back.
Hi I currently have the ARC / 2 subs / 2 sonos one SL's.....am definetly gonna upgrade to the fives.... can't wait.....room is about 14 x 23 ....cheers from Canada
I have the one Sub set up and you are spot on about the Sonos fives they really fill up the room and make your movie and music experience totally different. I'm set up in a 15x15 space. Friends get a kick out of it.
Can't wait for Harman Kardon Citation system from you! It's the only real competition for Sonos with exactly same features of filling the system with more components. Thanks for the video!
a few years back i had one sonos sub, two fives and a playbar. Im a bassjunkie but it was consistently giving me headaches after 30 minutes. this setup is just death by bass
Was going to get this set u, but then I got lucky enough to find the Sony Ht-A9 with SW5 Sub and just have to say HOLY MOLY! This truly its the best wireless system I've ever heard hands down. Would love to see you do this match up against HT-A9!
This is actually an example of what I was referring to in my comment above. The Sony HT-A9 with one of the two optional Sony wireless subs is a far more technically advanced and capable system than anything that Sonos as to offer today - and it's not even close. Far more capability and performance for a much lower price.
Enjoy your Sonos sound system. Can’t stand shitty people who comment on someone’s post about how crap what they bought is. Let people enjoy their shit. Pretty easy.
I had the exact same 5.2 setup , Sonos Arc, 2 Play 5s and 2 Gen 3 Subs, The system was awesome but I recently moved to a bigger place and went with a traditional Definition technology Home Theater system, Definitive Technology CS9080 center speaker, 2 Definitive technology Bp9060 Towers, A pair of Definitive technology D11 bookshelve speakers, And 2 SVS PB 2000 pro subwoofers, There are pros and cons to both Sonos and a traditional Home Theater system, Sonos sounds good but when it comes to a nice home theater system Sonos cant keep compete, But the best thing about Sonos no messy wires which is a big plus, Even my home theater system sounds better then my Sonos did, All the wiring almost made me go back to Sonos lol
You are looking @ $8500 for the Definitive Tech setup you describe. If you want it to play well with SONOS in the other parts of the house you're going to need to add a Port for another $500. Bringing your total to $9K. Your setup might sound a bit better - no doubt - but not $6K better!. Not to mention that the SONOS system can be setup in minutes and can be upgraded in the future. Sonos FTW.
I tried the same set up, minus the 2nd Sub. For Tv you can’t beat it. For music, I did not like the main music coming from the rear of the room. So… I went with the following setup… Arc with Sub and SL1’s in the rear. I then added the 2 - 5’s as a left and right front speaker that only gets paired (Turned on) when I listen to music. In this setup I get surround sound for TV and a rear channel for music with the louder sound coming from the front of the room. Sounds amazing!!!
My system consist of one Sonos arc one pair one sub the GEN three and two other Sonos five ! And it’s all hooked up to a Sony Bravia XR master series 83 inch big screen TV. I love it. !
Jonah, loved the vid. I would love to see you review some older receivers vs newer receivers. Some of my old stuff I used to have (70s-80s) was always amazing. I've heard some people's new stuff, and there's are really good. But my brother still uses his older stuff, and it jams better than some of the newer stuff I've heard. Thanks.
Yamaha is certainly not the only brand next to Sonos that can do swapping speakers for surrounds. Ever heard of Denon Home? Works exactly the same and perfect. Really loving this system.
Jonah, I appreciate all the work you do for your videos.like Brian, you talk to to us like normal people. Ps. I have 12 different Sonos products. The boost helps. Nice job Johan!
I have this exact set up in my office along with an 86" LG TV. I'm an Xbox gamer and this system does an awesome job with Dolby Atmos. My office is 15' X 15', and while it may be a little bit of overkill, it puts a giant smile on my face every time I fire my M4A1 in Call of Duty!
I have this setup but my 5s are in front. I use my 5s for listening to records. So my ones and subs are for surround. I’ve never been tempted to try this out but it’s cool to know it works great. Excellent video :))
I started out with Beam Gen 1 and two symfonisk speakers and also loved the sound. I later added the Gen 3 Sub and WOW! The Gen 3 sub or sub mini is a very good addition to round out the system.
Superb video Jonah, you really give us a great insight into your experience, thanks you. I have the arc, sub gen 2 and 2 one SL’s in my lounge. But i am vert tempted to get two 5’s. I do have a 5 in my kitchen which i absolutely love. So getting two further 5’s would be an awesome system. Thanks again. I look forward to seeing your next video.
Hey Jonah thank you for the review i was planning to upgrade from SL One’s to Five Pair but was a little confused but your review helped me and i will be upgrading right aways thank you again 😄👍
Excellent review Jonah!!! This Sonos system sounds like a system that would be worth the wait if buying one item at a time to get the best sound quality. I was really on the ropes to buy this system or the Nakimachi and I have no regrets other that I really liked the white Sonos Arc. The white was very bougie to me. Glad you put another video out and hope to see the next one soon. ✌🏽🤙🏽🖖🏾👍🏽
@@sebasr4526 hey if you have the know how of setting up a complete system it’s totally up to you. That’s takes serious research and knowledge of how to set everything up. Sound bars are easy set ups and everyone is a fan of certain systems. I love the Nakimachi 9.2.4 and there literally a whole fab base on Facebook dedicated to Nakimachi. I’m not going to hate a brand to justify you like a certain sound bar. It’s an easy set up outta of a box and people like the easy set up. My parents worked for RCA and I bought RCA. I bought RCA until I could not buy it anymore but I don’t hate Japan, China, Korea just cause they had better brands. Jonah Mathis is an honest guy who has an honest opinion about sound bars. In my opinion this guy is the best on TH-cam. In my opinion I like the Nakimachi 9.2.4 better than any other brand but it’s my opinion and it’s a free country here in the USA 🇺🇸 so like what you like. Get off Sonos nuts 🥜
@@sebasr4526 shitty car comparison. I’ll take a Toyota over Mercedes any day. In fact it just proves Sonos is better. Toyota has great re sale value/ so does Sonos. Toyota’s reliable, made to last/ so is Sonos. Toyota is cheaper to maintain over Mercedes.
Great video! I recently got the Sonos arc open box (excellent condition) and saved 150 from Best Buy and now about to buy a Play 5 open box and save 100. So now I got to complete my set 😅😅😅. Love Sonos!
Always wondered about the Sonos 5's as rears but I think thats overkill for a small room. Probably better in a huge room. Im hoping Sonos will come with an Upfiring Rear speakers in the future
It’s unreal how good they are as rears. They are 12 ft behind me though. If they were under 6 ft I think it would be too much. It’s very immersive with those my arc and gen 3 sub. I had the one sl’s before and these blow them out.
Yeah I have a 75"TV which sits central on a 3x4m wall, I sit 3m central away from the TV so you have an idea of my TV room. I have Arc under the TV, each rear corner has a One SL and a Sub front right. Because the room is mid size (12m2) I feel this is the best setup, sure the fives do a great job at a higher volume but overkill for me.
I got playbar 1 sub n 2 ply ones I’m really happy how it sounds , I had a 5.1 regular avr n speaker system no difference in sound , sonos great product 👍👍
@@sebasr4526 Note to self. Add Sonos to your “List of things that triggers”. It seems liking Sonos brings out the sound experts. Didn’t know Sonos was a software company🤷🏾♂️. I’ll remember that next time I’m giving them my hard earned bits. I guess you can’t make software and great audio at the same time🤷🏾♂️. Wonder what software Bose, B&W and Harman Kardon use developing their audio products 🤔.
The fact that this sound system is "modular" is why I bought it. I have the ARC soundbar, two Gen 3 subs, and 2 1SLs for the rears in my living room. Then I have a 5 in the bathroom and a Move in the kitchen. To have a home theater/whole home audio system all in one makes the price justified!!!
I got the same setup but with era300 rears…it is pretty mind blowing what its capable of..im still excited for them to finally launch the arc2 an my og arc going in my bedroom lol
Very informative video, Jonah!...Just ordered the same Sonos set up (minus 1 Sub) and looking forward to fantastic audio to compliment my new 77" Sony A80J OLED TV!
I have two Play 5 speakers w/ sub and I couldn't be happier. The price is on the higher end yes. But, running speaker cables is so 70's and that is one of the reasons why Bluetooth and wifi is here. Elimination of cables run across or behind furniture and the carpet. I'm looking at purchasing the sound bar to compliment the Sonos system I have.
I would like to see a center channel soundbar and add 4x separate speakers with upward firing for a 5.4.2 setup. I guess that starts getting away from a minimalist design which Sonos has, but at least cables would be kept to a minimum.
@@sebasr4526 I went from a Yamaha Aventage 7.1 receiver and proper Ascend Acoustics speakers (6.5” drivers) to the Arc surround system. Are there compromises? Sure, it’s not quite as good in all situations, but for watching most movies, it’s pretty darn close. I don’t have clutter everywhere now. The only thing I would have considered differently is in-wall speakers, but didn’t know how long I would stay in the house for. At least with the Arc, I could take it all with me when I move again. If my component system were a 10/10, the Arc surround with sub is around an 8.5. It’s so damn close.
If you were to buy 2 additional fives and put them at the front of of the sound stage on either side of the tv and group them to your ARC room it might even out. The ARC really is lacking as a standalone front left centre and right speaker. I wish Sonos would give us the option of a true 5.2.2 setup with the soundbar acting as a centre, without having to group multiple rooms, but it does work. I actually have 16 sonos components all grouped together to watch tv and it sounds amazing.
I decided to bite the bullet and go for broke with the Arc, two Gen 3 Subs, and two Fives as rear surrounds for my LG OLED 77C1 in our main viewing room. It will replace the Nakamichi 7.2.4; which, I've never been happy with the sound quality and I was getting an intermittent muffled sound with some Dolby/Atmos content on streaming services. The spouse didn't like the price; but, really loves the noticeable sound improvement over the Nakamichi.
Wow this setup is overkill bro. I would’ve never thought of getting 2 subs or even getting 2 fives to go with the 2 subs unless I was living in a mansion.
Just one month ago added a second sub and now I want to change my pair of 1s for the 5s By the way with the netflix series drive to survive you get a really immersive experience like no other
@@sebasr4526 seen this comment twice on two different comments from you. If you really feel like this. You don’t have to watch these videos man. People are gonna buy what they want at the end of the day.
I have a Roku Streambar (not pro) and a Roku Subwoofer Pro. I’m planning to get a Roku Streambar Pro, keep my Subwoofer Pro, and get 2 Roku surround sound speakers. In all, it will come to 330.00. I looked at Sonos and their way more expensive. That’s why I love Roku and how easy it is to upgrade everything on a budget!
Great video! My setup is the same except I use 2-One SLs for surround. I'm considering getting a pair of Sonos Fives in stereo for the Florida room just behind the home theater.
I've got the setup with two one SLs, which after seeing this, may upgrade them to 5s and move the SLs to a beam system for a bedroom. 😬 Oh the addiction of SONOS
Thank you. for the review. Looking into upgrading my Nakamichi 7.2.4 to the Sonos system. I like the added flexibility of mixing and matching Sonos speakers for future upgrades to home theater sound and whole house sound system for music.
My parents have a new arc system and a pair of fives I calibrated it with my iPhone they love their system i’m definitely going to get a arc with Twin subs and a pair of fives
I have the Sonos Arc 3rd Gen subwoofer 4 Sonos SL’s ones in my studio apartment and I love it and have the subwoofer at 2 sometimes and late nights I turn it down 0. No complaints I love my system
I have the ARC, Gen3 sub, and 2 Sonos ones. My room is only 12x12 so the Fives would be overkill. Definitely getting the second sub in a year or so if the wife lets me 😂
Awesome review! Right now I have two one sl’s, a sub gen 3 and the arc. I would love to get the fives as rears but I wasn’t sure if the rears would overpower the arc so much that it would sound disproportionate. What are your thoughts?
I have the arc shadow...sub gen 3 and 1 SL's....im considering the s5 instead of the 1 sl....what did you end up doing? I have a 10x20 room and this isnt as impressive as my old wired onkyo system with polk sub and surrounds
I removed an aging basic DVD surround sound system and whilst looking for a replacement a friend offered by a Creative Inspire T7900 7:1 speaker system for free, who said if the turned it up too much it was too loud. As I still had all the wiring in place I fitted this system, the sound when not turned up is a whole lot better than the tiny tinny sound of the TV speakers, I have played some studio quality music from a friend through it and you can hear the fret noise as he changes to a different note with great clarity, that I have never heard before, I think having a good sound source is half the battle with good quality audio. My cat is uncertain about it, after I played the latest TOP GUN trailer, as it ducked down with it's fur stood up wondering just what the hell just happened.
I'm building a house and planning on going with ARC (front) + Five's (back) and 1 or two subs. I will be mounting the 5's high on a wall behind the listening position on the couch. Should I run ethernet to hard-wire the Five's or should I count on a full WIFI setup?
Wouldn't hurt to have the ethernet cable as a back-up and added flexibility for the future. Wi-fi enabled devices a few years ago was mostly with smartphone or laptops and now everything has wi-fi ability like kitchen appliances, clocks, air purifiers, robot vacuums, watches, TVs, etc... I have the Arc, 2 subs, 2 Fives on my wi-fi and it sounds fantastic. Another option is just put the Arc on ethernet and the Sonos system should create its own secure wi-fi network separate from the rest of the house.
I know every one is different. But how do you have your system set up for tv and how do you have it set up for music. Like Bass/ treble the levels on the surrounds n stuff
You can't add the One SLs into the Arc/sub/Fives group if you wanted to make a 7.X.Y or 9.X.Y system. You can select the One SLs and add them to an already existing Arc, Beam, or Ray grouping as extra speakers or L/R stereo pair. Pretty much like added more speakers for a whole house sound system. The added on speakers will not act like upward firing Atmos or rear surrounds.
You can add the Five just like you would in the whole house audio; but, with the Five in the same room. The Five will not be part of the Arc/sub/One SLs group. Depending on placement of the Five, you might get an unbalanced sound, echo, or slight sync issues as sound bounces around the room.
Strange question here - How clever is the sonos software? Can you put the speakers in any arrangement, e.g two fives at the front and the arc at the back just behind the sofa? Or two fives at the front and two ones at the back without the arc?
I connected my second Gen 3 sub to my Arc+Gen 3 Sub+Fives with my iPhone with the Sonos App. I don't know if the Sonos App allows you to connect two subs together with Era 100/300 speakers in stereo pairs or with single Era?
Awesome video, Jonah! Thanks. I've always wondered what this setup would be like and the difference between the One SL's and 5's as rears. Kinda crazy that the difference is huge but I guess that makes sense.
Jonah...quick question.....How does this dual subwoofer setup compare in bass impact as compared to the Klipsch 12" powered subwoofer from the Klipsch Cinema 1200 you reviewed? Thanks in advance
I went all in and purchased this monster system. It is absolutely awesome!!!!

Nice man I have the sonos arc sun gen 3 and two fives and I talk about it all the time
This is actually an example of what I was referring to in my comment above. The Sony HT-A9 with one of the two optional Sony wireless subs is a far more technically advanced and capable system than anything that Sonos as to offer today - and it's not even close. Far more capability and performance for a much lower price.
Recently purchased ARC and added sub and 2 SL’s in part because of your videos.
Sonos FTW.
You describe things so well, I really love watching your videos!
That's an awesome setup! Next best thing would be Sonos Fives with upward-firing speakers on them too
I have this setup but my 5s are in front. I use my 5s for listening to records. So my ones and subs are for surround. I’ve never been tempted to try this out but it’s cool to know it works great. Excellent video :))
What is your center?
I am about to upgrade to this setup. I hope it's as amazing as you said.
I wish Sono in the future, will allow to add 2 more speaker in the front to wider the sound stage.
Agreed!!!
You already can add more speakers but have to sync them as a stereo pair. It's not a true surround setup but just an extension.
@@timhamock2996 you mean as left/right front speakers?
@@davidbosshart4448 yea that's correct
@@sebasr4526 definitely
Same here
Got the same setup now. I wish I could keep the ones somewhere in this as left and right channels or as height speakers.
Superb video! The best guy for soundbar videos! Best explanations!
Massive sound experience. Greatest sound system
I have a beam and two IKEA/SONOS speakers. That’s it. That’s all. Love the sound. Love the system.
I started out with Beam Gen 1 and two symfonisk speakers and also loved the sound. I later added the Gen 3 Sub and WOW! The Gen 3 sub or sub mini is a very good addition to round out the system.
love the star trek shirt
@@sebasr4526 Your mom is calling you for dinner. Get out of the basement.
I have 5s for rears in a loft (man cave) . Atmos music and movies streamed via my Apple TV 4K have unbelievable sound. I have no complaints.
@@pbelone23 do you have it with the Sonos arc and the sub?
Forward to a year later....Era 300s the goats for rear setup!
THANK YOU very much for this video. just the advice i needed! getting the sonas arc with 1 sub for now. cheers!
Shoutout to the Symfonisk rear crew.
Represent!
I have the arc, sub and 2 SL’s but I’m going to wait until Sonos release upward firing surrounds before anything
Hoping for something like that in the near future
I would like to see a center channel soundbar and add 4x separate speakers with upward firing for a 5.4.2 setup. I guess that starts getting away from a minimalist design which Sonos has, but at least cables would be kept to a minimum.
thanks for that wait a little bit suggestion, it actually makes sense to wait, I was going to get the two sonos five's after watching this video
@@sebasr4526Your Village called. They really miss you.
I have this setup... i fckn love it 😂. Movies, music, everything sounds great
If you were to buy 2 additional fives and put them at the front of of the sound stage on either side of the tv and group them to your ARC room it might even out.
Would love if you could compare this set up vs the same setup except with era 300 when they come out!
I have this exact same set-up...and absolutely love it! 👍
Wow this setup is overkill bro. I would’ve never thought of getting 2 subs or even getting 2 fives to go with the 2 subs unless I was living in a mansion.
You can never have enough bass first off, and secondly you can play your music at a much higher volume...you must be 60 years old.
Just one month ago added a second sub and now I want to change my pair of 1s for the 5s
By the way with the netflix series drive to survive you get a really immersive experience like no other
I’ll have to check that out, thanks
@@sebasr4526 seen this comment twice on two different comments from you. If you really feel like this. You don’t have to watch these videos man. People are gonna buy what they want at the end of the day.
I have the exact same setup and it’s awesome!
I love the Sonos system, and I’m one sub away from having the ultimate Sonos surroundsound!
Just added a 2nd sub to our set up.. But I'm really thinking of upgrading to 5s over 1SLs as surround speakers...
I just got this System I have only watched one movie on it it’s pretty amazing not sure if it’s worth all the money but It does sound very good
I have the ARC, Gen3 sub, and 2 Sonos ones. My room is only 12x12 so the Fives would be overkill. Definitely getting the second sub in a year or so if the wife lets me 😂
Where is the sub placement? I seen 1 sub near 1 rear 5 . Are both subs behind the couch?😊
Of course you're right about the sound demo... However, I think its fun to watch peoples reaction to an in person experience during a sound demo.
I doubt between the setup Sonos arc + 1 sonos sub + 2 sonos five vs the Bower and Wilkins formation duo. What is you’re advice?
Sounds great, but absolute balls to set up!!!
Got the same setup, Just Wow!!!!
Can you please review or give your thoughts on the newly announced Sony HT A9?
I have been wanting to add the the 5's to my 5.2.2 setup. I think I might just do it. Thanks!
I know every one is different. But how do you have your system set up for tv and how do you have it set up for music. Like
Bass/ treble the levels on the surrounds n stuff
Decided to upgrade and just ordered the fives, what I don’t understand is why sonos send me an email with an order confirmation for a sub gen 3.
One question, along with two fives, can I still add one sl set of speakers
You can't add the One SLs into the Arc/sub/Fives group if you wanted to make a 7.X.Y or 9.X.Y system. You can select the One SLs and add them to an already existing Arc, Beam, or Ray grouping as extra speakers or L/R stereo pair. Pretty much like added more speakers for a whole house sound system. The added on speakers will not act like upward firing Atmos or rear surrounds.
How would this system compare to the Sony HT-A9 system?
I wish you could add a Sonos Amp for in-ceiling speakers for an Atmos system
Don’t we all. Maybe something they’ll change in the future.
Sonos speakers sound compared to KEF LS50 Wireless II speakers with an optional KEF sub, can Sonia keep up sound quality wise?
As surround speakers, are the 5's supposed to be horizontal or vertical?
You can do either; but, horizontal would give you a wider immersive sound.
DTS work in this configuration on apple tv 4k with the application infuse connected with airplay ?
The 5s are overkill, especially in your setup. Your speaker placement is really hampering any chance of giving you a good surround sound.
Which to do first? Buy a second sub or change the pair of ones to a pair of fives?
Is the dual sub and/or a pair of fives okay in an apartment with neighbors on the other side of each wall?
Ehhh, depends if you like your neighbors or not haha. That's a TON of sound for an apartment with connected walls.
@@JonahMatthes thanks. I see, alright, I’ll keep my ones and stick to one sub then. I don’t want trouble with my neighbors.
I have sonos arc and one sub and 2 one sl…is it possible to connect one sonos five to the system? Will the app pair it will the arc
I would like to install 2 inwalls or 5's in addition to the Arc to widen the sound stage un the front, what is your opinion on that?
how will i connect my 2 sub gen3 + 2 Era ???
i need amp? to connect them with my Arc or simply by phone.
Is it possible to have 2 Sonos arc setups in different rooms?
1 in the living room and a separate one in the bedroom
Absolutely!
