If your television doesn't support eARC, and you have an external device providing a Dolby Atmos AV signal, then couldn't you run that signal into your AVR via a HDMI cable, and allow it to act like a splitter by taking the audio portion of the signal, processing it, and then outputting the Dolby Atmos signal to the speakers, while allowing the video portion of the signal to pass on through and out to the television??? Also, I thought ARC could allow one to receive Dolby Atmos audio from streaming services that use the format, which includes Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, because those services embed Dolby Atmos in a Dolby Digital Plus stream, which ARC can handle.

eARC has been a lifesaver. Only one remote needed like he said and with CEC enabled you control volume and power off/on. I've been swapping out remotes every few years when adding things like a Roku or new game console. Universal remotes used to be a must but not anymore. A good modern smart TV with eARC combined with a modern soundbar or Home Theater AVR eARC and all is fine. The only problem that still remains is getting certain codecs like Atmos, DTS or DTS-HD to pass from the TV to the sound device. I read that many TV manufactures now like LG no longer do DTS or DTS-HD and just pass the signal as PCM 5.1. Still sounds good but very confusing.
I had already picked up all this information along the way to getting my stuff working like I want it to. However, this video was a nice, reasonably short double-check and confirmation that I understood these features and was using them correctly to their best advantage. One of the best devices I ever invested in was the Sharc adapter that allows you to use a TV that supports eARC with a receiver that does everything but that. One of the most frustrating things is when you get some awesome, powerful A/V receiver and a new HDMI spec pops up that you want to have.
Wish it had worked with my 09 onkyo to Sony x900h but even with email support we never got any sound out of it. And had to send back at a loss. 🤷♂️. New receiver or stay optical DD is the only choice.
@@Selene_M3 Oh man, that really stinks. I did end up upgrading my receiver from back then to get 4k and HDR passthrough. But the one I bought was JUST before eARC was a thing. The following year's model had it. I was so pissed as I bought a REALLY nice receiver. When I heard about the Sharc adapter, i was in heavan. Luckily it worked for me. THe only issue was it took a few firmware updates for it to be 100% stable every time.
Very happy and thankful for your clear information, Chris. I bought a 2022 55" Samsung crystal Clear UHD TV in a sale. Later I discovered that the TV didn't support Dolby Atmos. I was already dissapointed and searching for a solution. Good to hear that you can place the soundbar before the TV: meaning that your Streaming service-signal first goes through the Soundbar and then to your TV instead of the other way around. So you don't lose the Dolby Atmos signal which the soundbar supports but the TV doesn't. This probably works because of the eARC-HDMI-ports on both Soundbar and TV. Soundbar only has to put through the visual to the TV and the Surround sound signal is already in the soundbar. Sounds plausible 😎 I only have to buy a good soundbar (with eARC and Dolby Atmos) now. Plus a few Ultra High speed cables for my other devices. Minding that I need a soundbar with a few extra HDMI-ports. Thanks!!!
Wow. Thank you for this helpful info dump. Being able to use one remote for my setup is a nice feature. It's crazy that my TV and sound system were capable of doing this the whole time I've had them.

I am super impressed by the quality of this video. The presentation was great and the information never redundant and all worth knowing on the subject. Damn near perfect.
I really like ARC,I run it to my tv from my receiver and when I turn a device on the receiver switches to the input for that device, way different from when I was a kid and you had to jump through hoops to get everything setup, now it’s just one and done.
They COULD have made HDMI a superfast bidirectional audio and video pipeline from the start. But, it was originally more about copyright protection than usability and features. They keep rolling out features a little at a time to keep you buying new stuff. It's always been that way. HDMI was supposed to replace ALL the other connections, be SMART and simplify things.
Yup..I had to upgrade my receiver 3 times in the past 8 years to keep up with the changes. First time was because I needed all hdmi connections. Then the 2nd time I needed 4k . Then last time was I needed 4k @120.
That's why upload speed on internet is so much slower than download! They want the products you are paying for to get to you quickly, but don't want you sharing files as quick with others!
Thank you for making this video cuz I've learned a lot! Unfortunately my theater system is so old (it's 27 years old) it still uses Optical for sound instead of ARC
In my experience, I have Pioneer receiver pioneer vsx rs320 5.1, year released 2009 only has optical audio input, so I decided to buy sony bdv-e2100 home teather 5.1 2018 year fabrication because it is HDMI ARC build in, My big surprise the pioneer vsx rs320 nine year older reproduce without lost of sound dolby digital plus and atmos format audio, transfering the back and heigth sound to the sorround sound speaker receiver, so no sound is lost and keeping wide audio dinamic range via Pass-Through in the tv. Meanwhile the sony bdv e2100 almost a soundbar with separated 5.1speaker lost sound in sorround speaker dolby digtal plus and atmos, inspite to be HDMI ARC build in, also it is not wide dinamic audio range capable, the sound is flat via PCM. So I disided to stay with the pioneer vsx rs320 becausa even has better effects movies sound than the sony bdv-e2100, I thinks the optical audio is capable in audio only needs good hardware to reproduce sounds, I still didn´t test earc so far. At the time I bought the pioneer vsx rs320 all receivers had only optical and coaxial audio and analagus either 5.1 or 7.1 and stated to be dolby digital plus bulid in. This was my source sound test www.demolandia.net/cinema/dolby-demo-trailers-hd/page-9.html
Damn, awesome video. Like, I've been searching how to use a Sonos soundbar as a TV soundbar for like an hour, and you are the first one that clearly explained how it all works. All in 7 min, including intro and outro. Marvelously done.
Great video! One thing that I didn’t realize until I got a TV with eArc and a soundbar with eArc is that eArc takes care of lip sync (audio moving not in sync with video) automatically. With Arc I had to mess with audio delays on my Shield, my LG TV, and my soundbar, and I could never get it perfect for all content. With eArc, everything stays in sync!
ARC has one downside: its audio is limited to 5.1. So if your gear is not the new and more capable eARC, you kinda have to choose between great audio from your smart TV vs the great control functionality of CEC. Of course, if all your program sources are external to the TV this is not an issue…. but given the awesome capabilities of the new smart TVs, were I configuring a new system today I’d ensure that both the TV and the AVR were eARC.
Yeah my current TV doesn't have eARC only ARC. Which is why I could never stream Dolby Atmos through it to my processor. Didn't realize it until recently. But I'm upgrading my TV soon. So that will solve that issue.
Hi Chris, amazing video. I wanted to share that while your approach for the Xbox series X and soundbar is correct for the HDMI connections there are some soundbars/TVs that are not compatible together and will cause a sound delay on the Xbox when trying to use Dolby Atmos. I experienced this when I bought a Samsung soundbar for my LG cx and Xbox series x. My tv would not let me use the audio Passthrough setting with the Samsung. I then returned the Samsung and bought an LG soundbar and now I can use the Passthrough setting and Dolby Atmos has no delay on my Xbox series x. Might be worth making a separate video for but people are having major problems with this.
Samsung is stupid like that I had an old Samsung 5.1 system that would only automatically turn on & off (CEC protocol) when connected to a Samsung TV, no other brands work correctly with it despite it supporting CEC
I gotta be honest, this video popped up in the related videos and u wasn't going to watch it because I've watched a few videos in arc and earc and thought it was pretty straight forward. But decided to watch yours anyway. And I learned more. And even had a question answered I wasn't looking for in this video yet you answered. Which was about still getting 4k @ 120hz on the ps5 but using the receiver with arc to the tv's earc/arc input. Awesome vid man for real! Thanks for the info and God bless!
ARC/EARC is a great concept with the exception that alot of people experience random audio dropouts. I have an Xbox Series X connected directly to a Samsung Q90T and use the EARC from the TV to my Denon EARC equipped receiver. I'm using Zeskit hdmi2.1 cables but I will randomly get audio dropouts here and there. They only last for a second when it happens but it's irritating
It is not the cable you used and not even the Xbox, it is common with other manufacturers as well. What creates the audio dropouts is your TV itself when it is sending audio out from the ARC port (absolutely nothing you can do).
Thanks for making it sound very clear and simplified. I've always had trouble getting my system set up right. I current have a series X Xbox through a receiver that doesn't support HDR to a LG tv. I did just order a Samsung Premiere projector and am hoping I can go Xbox and other consoles straight to the projector and either ARC or optical cable to my receiver, so that I can use HDR.
Great video Chris. Just bought a tv with eArc and a sound bar, but still waiting for it to arrive. Your video had good information so I won’t have to fumble around with the settings when I get it. Thanks.
Thank you for clear and to the point tips/instructions. Answered my question here, Soundbars CAN be used as a video source back to TV ( ie. ps4 hdmi to soundbar hdmi input) while using soundbar ARC to TV Arc.
eARC is part of HDMI 2.1 standard, and HDMI 2.1 supports 4K@120hz (and also 8K@60hz). So if your TV and sound bar supports eARC and have ports marked "eARC" *you know* it supports 4K@120hz just fine. The only thing you have to make sure is to have a proper HDMI 2.1 cable plugged in your TV (eARC audio can run fine on just an HDMI 1.4 cable).
This information could significantly reduce the return of sound bars at Best Buy. I believe that sound bars are the most returned items in this department store
Thank you so much I called the Sony technician because my TV only has one eARC port, but you made the sound bar connection much more viably sound in administration adue your clarity. I was simply ire to direction with their tech folk, yrr a godsend I appreciate it.
I learned how to use ARC when I found out the Nintendo Switch couldn't use surround sound with an optical cable. With my setup ARC was the only way to get it to accept a 5.1 signal. Great video!
I stumbled across your video. Thanks for posting. I have encountered issues with ARC in regard to Blu-Ray players (Sony UB-P 700 & 800). Most recently the issue occurred when setting up a new Samsung Q80 75" tv, which was replacing an LG 75", on which I managed to crack the screen, and also had the same issue. The Blu-Ray player is not seen whether it is plugged into the TV or my HT Receiver (Yamaha). With the ARC used to return the sound and the Blu-Plugged into another TV input the result is better than when plugged into the receiver. The receiver will only give a buffering icon and the TV will give a couple of seconds of picture along with the buffering. The only solution I have found that works is to: - Disconnect the TV from the internet (I use wired). My son thinks part of the issue may be copy protection. Turn off the ARC. Connect to a non-ARC input I had to do this with the LG as well, I was hoping the Samsung would be different. It is a bit more inconvenient but it works. It also doesn't help that my Harmony Remote is now a brick. It became useless with the last attempt to update the hardware. Do you have any thoughts?

Thank you so much for answering my question about 120hz and hdmi arc. I bought a new budget 4k 120hz tv and budget soundbar but didn't realize that I needed 2.1 hdmi to use 120hz properly.
For the last 3 months I’ve had my soundbar connected by Bluetooth because I was using the wrong HDMI port - it’s the arc/out not the arc/in?! Seemed counter intuitive but it fixed it. Thank you!

Putting all this information in one place is very helpful, even if it's already working on my gear. Thanks, Chris.
Somebody get this man a shield!!! I got a new TV but my Denon only supports 4k 60Hz and I'm been going crazy trying to figure out how to get it to work from my Series X while still getting my surround sound. He explained it all crystal clear and just made my day.
you are a lifesaver. I have an older receiver with a 5.1 setup and before watching this I thought I had to upgrade my receiver to HDMI 2.1 so I can pass through my Series X and PS5 on my new C2 OLED to take advantage of the 120 fps and dolby vision.
Hey man, REALLY appreciate your straight to the point, no BS style video.
I’ve been looking at getting a Vizio Dolby atmos sound bar for my new Hisense tv and I’ve been struggling to figure out if it’ll work well because the tv doesn’t have eARC. This video couldn’t have come at a better time! Thanks!
Great explanation and now I have CEC enabled and working and the arc sorted out so apps like Netflix are playing through my amp rather than the TV speakers! At last! Thank you Chris.
Fought my sound bar for like an hour and watched this and got it. Appreciate you man
THANK YOU. This was EXTREMELY helpful. I'm upgrading from a 2004 JVC receiver (no HDMI) to a 2021 Denon (all the new bells & whistles) and I appreciate the tips. Just subscribed!
Appreciate it... Many others rambled on for 30 minutes i'd hardly call this a long video.
Short concise, directly to the point. I like the image examples explaining the processes made it a lot easier for a tech dummy like me to understand. Kudos to you. I'll keep this for reference when I want to explain it to others.
This was exactly what I needed to know. Very clear and concise information, thanks!
There are many systems to learn in home theather and ARC and eARC are subsets for a specific job. I think you did a fine job Chris! Thank you!
This was such a simple and easy explanation on how this stuff works. I’m glad this was recommended to me.
Great video! Clear and informative. A little bird told me I’ve got a Sonos Beam coming for x-mas, so I’ll be revisiting this and your sound bar video soon enough!
If it's the beam 2 use eArc if it's the original bean it doesn't have Atmos so eArc has no benefit :)
@@nateschmitz9827 Thanks! I made the purchase on behalf of my girlfriend, so I can confirm that it's a Beam 2 :)
@@robarandjelovic4068 lucky! I have the Sonos Arc but no eArc, next upgrade is a new TV!
This helped a lot to confirm what I thought I knew already but wasn't 100% sure, thanks! You are always very informative and even somewhat future proof (I'm watching this 2 years in the future). Cheers!
Thanks for making a no BS video that helped my understanding of ARC/CEC tremendously - well worth the 7 minutes!
Probably the most practical video on the subject out there. Thanks 👍🏻
I'm less confused now. Doesn't mean I'm not confused lol just less confused 😭 lol
Thanks for the help
I am super impressed by the quality of this video. The presentation was great and the information never redundant and all worth knowing on the subject. Damn near perfect.
This dude is the smartest tv host I’ve ever heard in my life. He didn’t make a single mistake.
God bless u sir. Unplugging it was the solution to reseting my sound-bar so it works now 🤟 great breakdown on everything too, thanks again.
Money always changes things unfortunately
Yup..I had to upgrade my receiver 3 times in the past 8 years to keep up with the changes. First time was because I needed all hdmi connections. Then the 2nd time I needed 4k . Then last time was I needed 4k @120.
I'm perfectly happy with component video. The optical fiber audio has its issues of course. Like switching. HDMI is a PITA with the security crap.
Man, I love the optical cable. The sound from that is amazing even in 2022
@Italianempath I agree
Mine too
In my experience, I have Pioneer receiver pioneer vsx rs320 5.1, year released 2009 only has optical audio input, so I decided to buy sony bdv-e2100 home teather 5.1 2018 year fabrication because it is HDMI ARC build in, My big surprise the pioneer vsx rs320 nine year older reproduce without lost of sound dolby digital plus and atmos format audio, transfering the back and heigth sound to the sorround sound speaker receiver, so no sound is lost and keeping wide audio dinamic range via Pass-Through in the tv.
Great explanation. Just bought a new system and didn’t know what ARC was. Makes hooking up systems so much easier.
Damn, awesome video. Like, I've been searching how to use a Sonos soundbar as a TV soundbar for like an hour, and you are the first one that clearly explained how it all works. All in 7 min, including intro and outro. Marvelously done.
Wondering why can’t you use your sonos sound bar with tv main purpose of it is adding tv to sound bar and is very straightforward 😊
Interesting I have the LG CX and the Samsung SB and never had issue - using eARC as the audio quality was better than just arc
Samsung is stupid like that I had an old Samsung 5.1 system that would only automatically turn on & off (CEC protocol) when connected to a Samsung TV, no other brands work correctly with it despite it supporting CEC
This explanation is perfect!
For me, those diagrams are the best way to visualize it. Also, seeing CEC working is very clarifying.
Out of curiosity, why are you going direct to the tv instead of through the receiver?
Thanks for making it sound very clear and simplified. I've always had trouble getting my system set up right. I current have a series X Xbox through a receiver that doesn't support HDR to a LG tv. I did just order a Samsung Premiere projector and am hoping I can go Xbox and other consoles straight to the projector and either ARC or optical cable to my receiver, so that I can use HDR.
This was an amazing video with fantastic diagrams for the explanations
Not true at all. I have a Samsung LSP7 projector, it has eARC, it only does 4K @ 60fps. You’re spreading false information.
There is no "HDMI 2.1 cable"
This information could significantly reduce the return of sound bars at Best Buy. I believe that sound bars are the most returned items in this department store
my brain spaghettified after the first minute
Thank you so much I called the Sony technician because my TV only has one eARC port, but you made the sound bar connection much more viably sound in administration adue your clarity. I was simply ire to direction with their tech folk, yrr a godsend I appreciate it.
I learned how to use ARC when I found out the Nintendo Switch couldn't use surround sound with an optical cable. With my setup ARC was the only way to get it to accept a 5.1 signal. Great video!
How did you get that PS5? : p
Just come to my house and install the damn thing. I ain’t got time brotha.
If you ain't got time to setup your TV, you ain't got time to WATCH your TV
Duuuude...I can't thank you enough about the "bypass" thing. You just saved me $2000 dollars.
I mashed the like button, the subscribe button, and the bell button, and I think your video was the perfect length. 👍
The only solution I have found that works is to: -
Disconnect the TV from the internet (I use wired). My son thinks part of the issue may be copy protection.
Turn off the ARC. Connect to a non-ARC input
I had to do this with the LG as well, I was hoping the Samsung would be different.
It is a bit more inconvenient but it works.
It also doesn't help that my Harmony Remote is now a brick. It became useless with the last attempt to update the hardware.
Do you have any thoughts?
The only video that explains absolutely everything right away on eArc. I've been pulling my hair out looking for information, thank you!!
Thank u AFTER 74958 VIDEOS, urs solved my problem with my PS5 and TV BOTH simply needing to be ARC , And wallahhh. Im stoked 🤙
This is the best video I've seen describing what HDMI ARC does.
This was the clearest and most concise info I found on TH-cam , THANK YOU
Excellent video, thanks! Last time I did a deep dive into all this (other than PC monitors) was early 2000s! You've answered most of my questions in a single video! Legend!
Great video. I am upgrading my TV and 15+year old Surround system and needed an update on the latest tech. This summed it up nicely.
Thank you
AWESOME VIDEO , VERY WELL NEEDED !!
My Hue Sync box was bottlenecking ARC from not passing Built in apps audio… so I had to remove it, works perfectly… thanks for your great info, as always!
This is awesome content, thanks. The only place I could find a simple explanation and get my system connected using HDMI.
Knowledge is a great thing!! Thanks for clearing that ARC question for all of us watching. Cheers!
i siimply moused over your video before clicking on it and was able to see your words using closed caption just wanted to comment on how awesome it was actually getting some information without having to click and have to watch the video! great idea to get people to click if they like the words on the thumb nail!!!!!!!
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH! I have watched HUNDREDS of videos and have always PONDERED IN WONDERMENT! lol
I think I even shorted something out one time suing it improperly (not sure). THANK YOU You Have served Mankind Today.
The Lord (or whoever you pray too) Will Say: "Well Done Thy Good and Faithful Servant"
Thanks for the video.
The first step taken with ARC for me, was to have Receiver OSD display working on my TV. This was wonderful. // Once I got the TV Speaker off and TV CEC enabled... I just had to do a similar enable on my AV Receiver... and everything worked.

Who’d have thought unplugging the tv and sound bar would fix my problem. Thanks for the tip!
Wow, great video. Probably the most straightforward explainer I've seen on ARC & eArc. Earned a subscribe from me.
That's a very clean set-up you got there man.
This video improved my living room tremendously! Thank you so much
This man needs more susbscribers..!
Quality and informative content right there!
Thank you so much for answering my question about 120hz and hdmi arc. I bought a new budget 4k 120hz tv and budget soundbar but didn't realize that I needed 2.1 hdmi to use 120hz properly.
Awesome video. Found it very helpful. Thanks.. 👍
WOW!!! Finally.. Someone explains it all in 7 minutes
For the last 3 months I’ve had my soundbar connected by Bluetooth because I was using the wrong HDMI port - it’s the arc/out not the arc/in?! Seemed counter intuitive but it fixed it. Thank you!
Best video explaining this topic so far. So helpful!
Thank you for this concise explanation. New to all of this ARC tech and finally going to buy a eARC TV ready set for my PS5. Very helpful!
Chris Majestic gives the best info on youtube
Great video sir.
I've been wondering about ARC for years. Now I am informed. LOL
Thank youuuuuu! Your explanations made a lot more sense than all the Reddit posts I’ve been reading!
Great explanation!! I'd hire you!!
Well I found your video so you did a good job of putting the right information where it needed to be. Luckily my setup was pretty straightforward. Samsung CU7000 55"/PlayStation 5/Yamaha RX-V477 A/V. Fantastic receiver for sound quality lacking on video quality pass-through ARC to the rescue thanks.
