  • Sonos has added a new feature where you can connect an additional Sub to a home theater setup. Is this overrated or is it a game-changer?

    Hi Jonah, Happy new year from France. I will be moving in 2021 from a house with no neighbors to a flat with neighbors. I have today a 7.1 HC system, but our new living room, the WAF and the increasing quality of the soundbars leads me to a soundbar in the new flat. Thank you dor your soundbars reviews and your advice are welcome. As Sonos did it, I hope Sennheiser or LG will improve their soundbars so I can buy in september a great system. And I love your cats, there are very cute.

    Multiple subs makes a HUGE difference in audio quality, particularly in a medium to larger room. It seems in theory to be overkill, but in reality the bass evens out in ways one never expected to hear because it is (was) not common to have multiple subs.
    Great video, again. I appreciate your content and hope companies realize how good you are and start to reach out with demo units for review.

    I have updated my Sonos system (ARC+ 2 One-SL and 1 sub gen3) and added a second sub.
    The Sonos sub brings a great update to the whole listening experience. I did notice that the sub is somewhat directional.
    You always notice where the sub is in the room.
    By adding the second sub, this phenomenon has completely disappeared, and I experience a more homogeneous baseline.

      The issue is not Android. The issue with Android is, that there are so many phones out there and the quality of their microphones vary so much, that it's near impossible to gauge the sound consistently. The idea of using iPhone and iPads (and not even all of them) is, that the microphone in these is a known quantity. The same goes for the microphones in their own speakers, like the Move and Roam. That's why they haven't made an app for Android.

    Took me years, but I finally got a second Play 5 for the rear channels and it’s ABSOLUTELY INSANE. They’re relatively easy to wall mount, then dial in through the True Tune on the app. I honestly don’t see the need for a second Sonos Sub with how rich the Play 5’s are. The first one I received shocked me with how large it actually is, but after hearing their range, it makes sense why.

  • @castlelosthomeautomation
    @castlelosthomeautomation 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Our living room is rather large. So much so, that a pair of Sonos One or Ikea Symfonisk speakers not would have been sufficient as surrounds. So we're using Sonos Play:3s as surrounds. It's unfortunate, that these have been discontinued. There really is a gap between Ones and Fives, that these do fill. At least the Play:3 have S2 support, so there's that. And they can be picked up for decent money second hand.
    I've been waiting a few months to pull the trigger on upgrading the front, going from a Playbar to the Arc, adding the HDFury Arcana (TV is arc only and I also have a Hue Sync Box that won't pass eARC either), upgrading our Bluray player to a 4K capable one with eARC support and last but not least adding a second sub. But all of that should happen, over the next month.
    And I agree: Peter Pee is a great source for in depth Sonos analysis. He takes it to a whole different level. Been following him ever since I got into Sonos.

      Sonos de-tunes the rear speakers in rear surround duties with the sub. The Fives will not perform to its full frequency range compared to stand alone or stereo pair configuration. The Arc/Beam home theater set-up takes those low bass frequencies and sends them mostly to the sub. The Fives will be louder compared to the One SLs or even the Era 300. Sonos even turn off the Era 300 center speaker when they are used in surround sound home theater set-up.

    Hi Jonah, question for you... how do your cats co-exist with your Sonos equipment? I've had people tell me a cat would likely scratch the glossy finish on the subs and the fabric exterior of the Beam. Have you experienced anything like this?

    • @JonahMatthes
      @JonahMatthes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They actually don't bother the subs at all. They'll jump on them, but they never scratch or hang around them for long. They don't mess with the Sonos Arc much because it's on the mantle, but we are very consistent with yelling at them to get down if they do jump up to the mantle.
      When I had the Samsung HW-Q950T (cloth covering over front and top), they did seem more attracted to it, but we were able to keep them away enough from damaging it. Depends on how stubborn the cats are as to if they'll listen or not.

    Not always. My Bose 650 will accommodate 2 subs in a firmware update. I found after running the Adapt IQ. It actually reduced the bass response running to subs. The proper placement is on the right or left of your TV stand, but not directly in the corner. 2 or 3 feet from the corner gives a natural response.

    Thinking about getting a better surround kit with Dolby Atmos kind of feeling. I'm gonna buy Arc to have wall mounted under my wall mounted 65" QLED800 TV, two of either Sonos era 100 or 300 in the back wall mounted, but still unsure what to go for, and 2x sonos subs on each side of the TV bench.
    I just don't know if it's worth going for 2 subs to start with or if I should choose either Era 100 or 300 in the back. I already have one Era 100 though, but that's gonna stay in my bedroom.
    I might just go for 2x era 100 as they take less space, one arc soundbar under the tv and one sub to begin with. And then concidering buying another sub later on :)

      There is no point in doing that. The only reason why you would want 5.1 is for movies. Not so much for music. And while your Play:5s have an audio input, you will always have lip sync issues with the analog to digital conversion. That's the reason all of Sonos soundbars use an optical or digital input for sound from the TV. No conversion. To achieve 5.x.x with Sonos, there is no way around a soundbar.

    • @erikniemi1977
      @erikniemi1977 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Best Buy salesman are usually about as useful as reading a box yourself. If you want to use Fives as surrounds you can, and they do sound better than the smaller Ones. However if you aren't the type pf person to listen at higher volumes then you likely wouldn't get much benefit out of the fives as surrounds in movie/tv application. Duel subs are a similar idea, if you aren't a home theater enthusiast you won't get much out of them either. If you are like me and have a dedicated theater then pretty much all the sonos stuff is "subpar" and you'd want to go to dedicated separate amps and standalone speakers. I do enjoy the sonos stuff in smaller spaces however, I use them in my bedroom and they work well. Overpriced for what they offer in terms of sound quality but very simple to setup and use.

      @@philippeaboussouan2361 Well I guess it depends on what you want to spend on a second system and how loud you want that system to play regularly. In the sonos brand I believe the best "bang for the buck" is the sonos beam with a sub. If want surrounds in a smaller space get 2 of the Ones. If you are in a large room the Fives are a bit louder, but you would only like notice that difference while listening to music. The effects of most surround tv/movie mixes are generally subtle on purpose and the Ones handle them fine. If you are thinking a larger living room I'd get the Arc instead of the Beam. 2 subs are great but the extra cost is high for an effect that I've found only audiophiles tend to notice. On a side note Sony has a new system out that I believe could quite possibly sound better than the sonos, the HT-A9...you may want to check it out. Not cheap, but neither is a full sonos surround setup.

      One sub has to be a Gen 3 Sub and you can add another Gen 3 Sub or Gen 2 sub. No option to add a sub mini in a dual configuration as part of a soundbar configuration. Best option might be adding a sub mini and dual Fives to soundbar for more low end bass. The Fives can give you some pretty good bass compared to the Era 100/300, One SLs, or Symfonisk speakers.
