By the way, I dont have an apple TV but I am basing this info from how my ipad behaves. I just saw another video saying that the apple TV resamples music unlike the bitperfect iphone or ipad going out to a DAC.

Gene thank you very much for this I’ve been using Apple TV for years and usually I’m pretty thorough in diving into the settings. Unbelievably I missed this. I did switch to lossless and noticed a welcomed difference. Softer but more natural especially in the subtle notes of an orchestra played some music by Fabio Biondi classical and some John williams live in Vienna definitely impressed and improved. Thank you very much for your work. 👍🏻

I've learned over time that the mastering of the actual music is far more important than bitrate. Now, having just said that Lossless 24bit/48kHz is a huge step up from 256 AAC and is a welcome bit of news.

Now the next step for me is to get an audio input preamp to take the HDMI from my AppleTV and feed it into my stereo. I have an old style high quality audio system which I plan to retain, but I just need an add-on to take the HDMI output from the AppleTV and use its DAC to put out an analog audio signal to feed into an AUX input.

Gene, does this information also apply to the Apple TV app that comes pre-installed on most Smart TV's nowadays?
I have an old standalone Apple TV (pre-4K), which I used before TV manufacturers started including Apple TV as a pre-installed app. At some point, I'm going to buy a new Smart TV, just haven't decided yet.
The reason I ask is because if I have access to the "Settings" menu inside the pre-installed Apple TV app on my Smart TV (i.e. I'm not sure if one would even have this level of access to the pre-installed Apple TV app to make any would-be changes), and if the pre-installed Apple TV app can output Apple Lossless audio, that would obviate the need (and added expense) of buying yet another outboard device. Not to mention the necessary additional HDMI and Ethernet cables to connect it all up.
    Thank you.

      @alvindawkins5700 ปีที่แล้ว

Mmmm, yea. I'm not sure to the degree just how "separate" the Apple TV app is from the standalone Apple TV box. Even with that, the AppleTV app still allows you to also stream Apple Music. Since that's the case, and to the point of my question, does it (also) allow you access to its "Settings" menu?

I've used both ATV4K from 2021 to the most recent. HDMI plugged into my Yamaha rx-a4a. AppleTV 4k has never ran sampling above 48KHZ. In addition, Dolby Atmos on ATV 4K streams at 48khz by way of ATMOS/PCM, not Dolby Digital or DD+. However, you could disable Dolby Atmos even is the track is Dolby Atmos, the playback will be 5.1. surround if Dolby Atmos is disabled. By the way, Yamaha does playback 24/48, 24/96 and 24/192 when streaming from Amazon Music through Fire Cube products, Quobuz, and Tidal through Nvidia Shield.

      Depends which AppleTV you have.
Up until the 4k the Ethernet port was limited to 100Mbps, so wifi is actually faster. I get the stability argument, but I've found wifi with a router located nearby to be more reliable with complex video.
If you have a 4k AppleTV, then I'd do Ethernet.

So this wouldn’t work if I have the Apple TV going into my Sony tv via hdmi then out of the tv via an analog audio out into my reciever that only has analog inputs??

Thanks for this Gene. Sadly I've stopped using my ATV4K for music because it caps at 24/48 and those of us paying for Apple Music subscriptions know they have plenty of 24/96 and even some 24/192 content. So now when I want to listen to high res lossless, I use my Mac laptop to a Topping DAC and set the output to match the content via the Audio MIDI setup app on MacOS. I really wish Apple would allow their AppleTVs to support up to 24/192 since they have the files on the server. I do continue to use the ATV4K for Atmos music.

I totally agree. It's too bad ATV4K won't even just serve audio greater than 48kHz from a Mac. It's like capping the resolution of streaming video at 720p, or streaming photos at 500kb. Downsampling greater than 48kHz audio is even an unnecessary processing step... all it has to do is push the full resolution audio through the HDMI cable. The only redeeming factor is 16bit/44,100kHz audio is automatically upsampled to 48,000kHz. My workaround is streaming hi-res audio to my oppo disk player at full resolution, which works great though the interface isn't as elegant as the ATV4K. Seems like a missed opportunity for Apple, though it will be a reason to upgrade is they ever enable greater than 48kHz streaming in an updated ATV4K.

@@toneslotohnz4540I’d like 96KHz too, for the last smidge of quality on that rare album actually mastered in high quality, and so I can slow it down and remix it for fun… but it’s seriously not comparable to resolution or lossy compression bitrate. The reason they resample to 48KHz is almost certainly for some DSP, even quite limited. Many AV receivers even at thousands of dollars resample to 48KHz. If you can A/B 48KHz vs 96KHz blind I’ll eat a bushel of bats :) 256kbps vs lossless is much easier and most still can’t do it.

Hello Gene. Question. I have gifs and gigs of ALAC Music in my Mac Mini Apple Music Library (what used to be iTunes) and my Apple TV can access that library. How can I get the Apple TV to play Lossless from my ALAC encoded music in my network?

Thank you! I have 2 AppleTVs and one is the older generation and I had that one in the bedroom where the set up is less audiophile. I spent like 10 minutes trying to find this setting on the older gen and it was just not there. Check the one in the bedroom and bingo! Also, take your Apple TV on vacation with you if there is wifi and a TV with HDMI then it's so friggin easy. If only there was passthrough audio, but a boy can dream.

Thanks for this video, I wonder if Apple will ever make any changes to the SW to connect the Apple TV to an external DAC to get the max out of Apple Music subscription. In fact, Apple Music catalogue is full of very hi-res lossless track, but is very unfortunate that the only way to enjoy that quality, as of now, is to connect an iPhone to an external DAC :(
Probably this can be also done with an ipad or a MACBook, but I did not have chances to test it out yet.

I have an appletv 4k for my ht with a soundbar, separate from my stereo setup where I usually stream music. I would have to get a separate small tv for that stereo just for lossless. Not sure its worth the hassle especially since my older receiver has basic hdmi, not arc.

I think the Shield Pro is the only streaming box that has Dolby TrueHD Atmos passthrough, through Plex for example

    • @Audioholics

No streaming service supports TrueHD at this time so you're still not getting Atmos in Lossless on any streamer.

Correct, but through Plex you can “rip” blurays and get to that result
