Airless Spraying Woodwork | Testing Airless Spray Tips

  • All about airless paint sprayer tips.. When airless spraying trim, what fine finish airless tips are you a fan of using?.. Graco FFLP, Wagner Fine Finish or TriTech Ultra Fine Finish
    Do you typically use a 208 / 308 or 210 / 310 tip?. Or even a 311 ?
    This video starts by providing masking tips and a guide how to mask a room to spray trim, using a 3M Hand Masker.. Followed by testing airless spray tips, a 208 by Graco, Wagner and TriTech ..spraying low viscosity paint
    Graco, Wagner and TriTech all have something to offer.. not all being low pressure tips, it’s not about which airless tip sprays at the lowest pressure. It’s not a ‘one size fits all’ when airless spraying paint.
    All about airless paint sprayer tips, airless spray tips explained.. First digit 2 signifies a 4” fan pattern, suitable for trim such as skirting, architrave, door frames and window sills. For doors, you may want to go to a 308 for a wider 6” fan width
    Orifice size, 08 equals .008 which is a measurement in thousands of an inch (.008”).. this size is suitable for low viscosity (flows easily, thin paints) materials such as lacquers and manufacturer (spray only) coatings.
    To spray thicker ‘decorative’ paints and primers, typically you would choose a .010 such as a 210 or 310.. if you’re still getting tails when going up the pressure, this is when you would go up a tip size, eg a 208 to a 210
    The following spray tip guards were used..
    🟦 Graco RAC X Tip Guard
    🟨 Wagner TradeTip 3 Tip Guard
    🇺🇸 TriTech T93R Tip Guard
    Wagner and TriTech airless tips will fit each other’s guard, you should have trouble free spraying but be aware the seat / gaskets are different, that are not interchangeable. Then Graco tips will only fit Graco tip guards

      208 ..If the viscosity is thin enough to atomise at a lower / reasonable pressure ..Then 210 for thicker / decorative coatings (by decorative, I mean a product that could be brush / rolled as well as spray).. 210 / 310 is typically used in spraying woodwork / trim paints 👍

    Info in this video is exceptional Pete The variables in spraying with pressure tip size and product can be quite stark low viscosity products are much more beneficial for spraying and the Akzo Noble is now my go to and thanks to you and all the support you have given me now means I can start to use all my Ultra tips now rather than having them melted down to build a tank. 😂

    Thanks Pete for another informative video, i was surprised by the great difference in pressure needed for the different brands to which i have all, so i will make a mental note that the tritech's need the higher pressure or size up.
    I was surprised you choose 100 mesh i think i would have automatically gone 150-200 on the finest material, its good to have a play round (but all the clean up!) Your equipment is spotless how do you keep your machine/gun so fresh?
    Finally pete i've just swapped my work lamp(same as yours) for the Festool syslite, its really night and day, you can place the festool in one part of the room and it will fully illuminate the whole room in a white light with no need to move it around or point the light at the area of work.

      ..Really appreciate your insight into the Festool Syslite, I’ve heard excellent feedback from others saying the same as you.. it would certainly benefit me with needing the best possible light to film footage 😆

    I would say the graco tip is the best purely for lower pressure and over spray especially if it in a occupied house on site it doesn't really matter I have used a 208 on spindles and hand rail the only issue I had was the tip stopping but that was my fault for not straining and letting the paint down a touch but overall they are great tips

    Hi Pete, hope you are well, another great video mate. Which tips do you like spraying with most brand wise? Also, would you tend to thin your paint more to spray at lower psi or keep the paints consistency and spray at higher psi? Sorry if it's a dopey question.

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Gareth, that’s a very good question.. I never normally thin trim / woodwork paints.. nor would I overly up the pressure, I did that in the video for demonstration purposes.. first thing, and this is the general rule.. after steadily upping the pressure, if tails remain and pressure is now on the higher side.. go up a tip size.. so from a .008 to a .010.. only then if tails remain, I’d add a splash of water.. but it could now be a case the material doesn’t cope with spraying.. hope that makes sense my friend.. as for which manufacturer is better, now I’m not sitting on the fence, I genuinely believe they all have qualities to offer and a lot comes down to what you’re spraying and how that product behaves.. in essence that’s what I wanted to demonstrate in the video.. I often spray with Graco FFLP tips, but on this occasion the TriTech Ultra atomised the paint beautifully (although a higher pressure, but they’re not low pressure tips).. the Ultra lay down a good coat of AkzoNobel.. now in my opinion, you could be spraying the ‘best’ product in the world.. if you don’t lay on the optimal coat, the finish whilst won’t be total disaster.. it won’t look and feel as mind blowing as it could.. sorry for the essay 🙈 hope that all makes sense.. great to hear from you, hope to meet up soon.. regards Pete

    Hi mate, great video. After are chat the other day I went and brought the tri tech tips. I thought I heard that the tri tech tips have a narrower fan pattern to other makess in the same size, but looking at your tests it looks bigger! Is that just the camera or are there any difference?

    • @James-sf5bb
      @James-sf5bb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that exactly. It seemed as though tritech gives a much wider fan? Possibly due to the higher pressure?

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Richard, ah lovely, I bet you can’t wait to give them a run out.. just spray plenty of test passes on paper and work up the pressure increments.. they’re not low pressure, so will take a bit extra to fill out the tails / edges.. that’s what happened in what you’re referring to.. the pattern was much more solid and even across the full width, what can be referred as a ‘letter box’ fan.. in this example the Graco and Wagner were a bit narrower looking, still 4” in width.. it does all depend on the material being sprayed, pigment and heat/viscosity all affecting the result.. I’m sure you’ll have success, let me know how you get on 👍 regards Pete

    Hey pete thanks for sharing,what's your favourite tip out of those 3?the tritech seemed to give the finest finish but at a higher pressure,is this more likely to wear the tip out and does this mean the graco ff is better or longer lasting tip as it needs less pressure to atomise it,have you seen the new graco gxff cordless?is it worth buying over the 240 volt one I wonder,it would be great if they could send it to you for a full review and demo

    • @James-sf5bb
      @James-sf5bb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Personally I’d opt for the the FFLP as it’s less work on the pump, thus better longevity for the tip and pump. The GX21 cordless looks great for the money! Not only do you get a fast charger and 2 batteries but, you also get the contractor pc compact gun too. Couple that with the extra hoses etc it’s a good deal

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Edmond, hope you’re well.. you’re right the TriTech Ultra with it’s double orifice atomisation does give a slightly finer pattern over the Graco FFLP.. but does take more pressure to achieve that.. don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Graco FFLP tips, achieving equally awesome results.. I was just wanting to showcase that different tip manufacturers respond differently and that naturally is influenced by the material being sprayed.. the TriTech tips pride themselves on quality and hardness of the tungsten carbide used in manufacturing.. some sprayers say the TriTech Ultras take a bit of ‘wearing in’ to a achieve optimal results 👍 ..you’re right though, there are other factors but generally speaking the higher pressure would cause more tip wear and the pump would work harder to maintain pressure..
      The new addition to the Graco Cordless range, the GXFF Cordless is a genius design and in my opinion the perfect cordless option Vs the previous GX21 and 390 cordless models.. nice touch too that the GXFF Cordless comes with the Graco Contractor PC Compact gun 👌👏👏👏👍 ..Great to hear from you Edmond.. regards Pete

    Hi Pete, wagner ff and tritech uff tips demonstrated here aren't classed low pressure like graco fflp, right?
    How does wagner HEA compare to those tips, could it be used in spraying joinery/trim and could nice finish be achieved with hea? I mean with decent pump like sf23 plus hea, not 250/350 class.
    Thanks.

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello my friend.. you’re spot on, only Graco FF LP are Low Pressure in the fine finish category or tips.. the Wagner HEA performs very well in terms of low pressure, but I’d only use for emulsions, the atomisation / droplet is quite course.. which I guess is a trade off when keeping pressure low.. plus I think the HEA only go as low as .011 in orifice size, which would work with higher viscosity trim paints, and if you knew the product would ‘level out’ you could get a result 👍 ..great question buddy, hope I was able to help.. regards Pete

    Hi Pete, great video. Got a question. I've sprayed dulux quick dry satin wood and dulux diamond satin wood. I watered down 10% as per data sheet. Spraying doors and trim with a graco fflp 210. I always find it's really hard not to get runs in the paint somewhere on the job. I've tried moving the gun quicker and I'm definitely 10-12 " away when spraying, but still seems to be runs somewhere. Particularly on doors and door frames/arcs where you may have overlapping passes. I was thinking would a 208 or 206 be better as less paint and more control? Or will this spray unwatered down and it's too thin and runny with 10% water added? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ben, thanks for watching my friend... I wouldn’t thin the paints, the 10% could be referring to HVLP / airspray.. with airless I don’t (typically) thin woodwork / trim paints.. The dulux range will most likely be thixotropic / a material that can equally be brushed / rolled.. you’re spot on with a .010 tip selection 👍 I’d first try not thinning, next going to a 310, this would spread the same flow over a wider area, resulting in a thinner coating.. but I suspect not adding water will ‘cure’ your problem 😆 ..a FF LP 208 could work with the dulux paint, it’s hard to say.. you may have to up the pressure to eliminate tails, plus you could get tip blockages..
      Hope this helps, keep in touch and let me know how you get on.. regards Pete

Have you managed to find a solution? I just bought a 208 fflp tip thinking less paint would be sprayed hopefully resulting in a thinner coating and therefore less chance of runs. Tks

      Great to hear from you in Norway 🇳🇴💙 ..do you know my friend Victor Orrego (malermester_orrego).. good question about tip sizes.. for spraying most, ‘off the shelf’ paints that are thixotropic (can also be brushed and rolled).. a .010 will suit, so a 210 or 310.. a 310 will distribute paint over a wider fan, whereas a 210 could result in a heavier coat and be susceptible to runs in verticals.. Vs a .008 tip, much less fluid flow, suitable for low viscosity coatings (these are very thin, free flowing, usually spray only paints).. hope this helps my friend, keep in touch.. great to have your contribution on the PaintHQ channel.. 🇳🇴💙 ..regards Pete

      Hey buddy.. good question.. I like to spray low viscosity ‘manufacturer’ coatings, so being very thin / free flowing, a .008 tip is perfect.. if I was spraying a thicker ‘decorative’ coating, so a product that could equally be brushed / rolled, then I’d use a .010 👍 ..hope this helps explain my friend.. regards Pete

    I've just tried using a 310 fflp tip with some joncryl acrylic primer. I didn't thin and nomatter what pressure on the Gx21 I sprayed at, it kept clogging. I Thinned it with 5% water and it still did the same thing. How thin does it need to be to run in a 310 tip? Should I run a 311 or 312 tip instead. I see so many people painting trim with the 310 fflp, surely they must be using acrylic water based paints too and it doesn't seem they have issue?!

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello my friend, sorry to hear you’re having trouble.. you’re right to choose a .010 such as a 310.. that size tip should spray most trim / woodwork paints (unthinned).. a 310 is used for paints that can also be used with a brush / roller.. I fear Johnstones Joncryl Acrylic Primer is one of very very few paints that doesn’t spray well, I’ve had others say the same as you m, that the tip blocks 😞..you’re right not to thin, I don’t look to thin trim / woodwork paints with airless spraying.. with the right tip selection and pressure, you’re usually good to go.. you’ve done everything right.. it’s just problematic paint, like I say you’re not alone… I can only suggest that the data sheet might offer a tip selection.. whilst I don’t usually go off whet the data sheet says, as in my opinion the suggested tip is too big (in my experience).. it could be worth a try.. or maybe it doesn’t recommend airless spraying 🤔 ..let me know how you get on.. regards Pete

      I use a lot of the products below for day to day internal woodwork, then WP198 on anything that needs ‘stain blocking’ .. they are low viscosity, waterborne industrial 1K products.. spray very easily, no thinning at very low pressure ..being low viscosity, I use .008 tips.. so a 208 / 308... Also the new Graco FF LP 106 is awesome on spindles
      Here’s the products -
      AkzoNobel WP198
      holmanpaints.co.uk/exterior-wood/286-sikkens-rubbol-wp198-high-build-stain-blocking-primer.html
      it’s actually a Sikkens product (exterior), has great stain / tannin blocking properties.. takes a little longer to dry Vs
      ..WP136 which is my go to high build primer for white woods / pine / mdf - excellent on mdf with its edge sealing properties..
      WP136 Water Based Primer / Edge Sealer
      holmanpaints.co.uk/interior-wood/171-akzo-nobel-WP136-highbuild-waterbased-primer-edge-sealer.html
      For the satin topcoat.. AkzoNobel Aqualit (Supercryl) Waterborne Enamel Topcoat
      holmanpaints.co.uk/interior-wood/169-akzo-nobel-aqualit-waterborne-enamel-topcoat.html
      You get a beautiful cabinet like satin finish ..and very cost effective, especially in 5 litre cans..
      Comes in white, then if needing tinting both primer and top coat can be colour matched off any colour chart..
      I’ve used Holmans for years, the Holmans team are all super helpful..
      Can be delivered next day if required.. If this helps at all, Holmans have a 5% discount code, across all their range, if you place your order online..

      As I've got 3 tubs of joncryl I'm determined to get this to work (hopefully). I also have some technos aqua40. So today I tried to spray the aqua40. Setup a 310 tip. Didn't water down at all, tried to spray and it blocked immediately! They say use a 0.11 to 0.13 tip, and going by your recommendation that they are usually oversized by manufacturers I thought the 0.10 would work. Tried to thin it down with 5%, still blocked at no matter what pressure. 10% worked better but would often block out of nowhere... I must be doing something wrong.
      The technos aqua40, have you ever sprayed it or similar, it's a an alkyd eurethane paint... What setup did you have if yes?
      Also what gun filter would be best for this and joncryl... I was running with a blue in the gx21, maybe it's too fine?

      Hi Eric, yes your theory is correct.. .012 will suit much thicker / higher viscosity, woodwork / trim paints.. so a .012 would not suit low viscosity / free flowing materials.. a 212 the fan being narrow, could result in a heavy coating.. yes you would have to move much quicker.. thanks for your question, keep in touch.. happy to help if I can.. regards Pete

      @PaintHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Moh, I’m fortunate to own 2 ‘flagship’ guns, the Graco Contractor PC Compact and a TriTech T380 that I’m using in this video.. Both are 2 finger guns, that’s my preferred configuration (over 4 finger), very popular amongst sprayers..
      The TriTech T380 is a well crafted, solid gun, a more weighted feel ..You can feel the quality in the hand, and I can see why, it’s a great piece of engineered aluminium alloy 👌👏👍 ..it’s built to withstand higher pressures if needed, whilst maintaining a positive shutoff..
      The Graco Contractor PC, especially the compact.. is a genius innovative design, the way the shorter handle sits comfortably in your hand.. the Graco Contractor PC Compact coupled with a 1/8” whip is so manoeuvrable 💯 ..perfect for spraying tight spaces, such as cabinetry..
      If you get chance, have a feel of both, try the trigger pull and see whet you prefer, and what suits your main spray applications..
      Hope this helps my friend, let me know what you decide 😆 keep in touch.. regards Pete

    Hi Pete, i followed youre advice. I am spraying a 5 bed house all woodwork with 11 doors and staircase. On your advice I bought some Akzo Nobel Enamel top coat spraying with a 308 tip on the Graco GX21Df. Wow this is really a game changer and i think could help a lot of others. I think trying to spray dulux satin wood with a 10 tip size is really tricky as it puts out too much paint too fast for a beginner- no one says this and you will get runs. With 08 tip size theres so much control and time to react. No runs worth mentioning. I am going down to a 106 tip for stair spindles.
    Its worth noting to people that the gun that comes with the GX21df does not take a 200 mesh filter so you need to get a compact or other gun that will take a 200 mesh filter for the 06 tips.
    That paint shop Holmans paints is brilliant. Thanks. Can you spray the primer that is Akzo Nobel with 08 tips? Is this what you use with the top coat as part of a system?. I got some Armstead primer undercoat and I have had to use my 517 with it, a 210 and 212 kept blocking no matter how much i watered down. I guess its the particle size of the paint. I only used it because it was cheap. Bad decision.
    Also i strained my paint on your advice too. Its amazing the stuff it filters out you dont see in the paint.
    Anyway just wanted to say many thanks your advice has been a game changer. There isnt much advice out there on exact paints to use with what tips etc so thankyou. Also it might be worth doing a video about all the different paints you use and what tip sizes. There is tons of paints im sure you use that no one has ever heard of available from Holmans. You just dont get specialist paints down at Brewers and they cant advise on spraying ive found, even though they sell the gear.

      Hey Ben, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience.. I’ll try and cover your points, apologies if I miss something.. it’s not critical to use a 200 mesh, I very often use a 100 mesh (I’m my QuickShot for example) with a FFLP 106 with little to non tip blockages (max tip in an UQS is .008 so there’s other things to be aware of).. so yeah, try the 100 mesh, I’m sure you’ll be fine.. Yeah the AkzoNobel primer is awesome, sprays beautifully with .008 and .006 tips, just up the pressure by an additional 100 psi ..my recommendation is to spray lighter coats with the primer (it dries quicker) - and denib any grain raise between coats… it’s a high build, mdf edge sealer. it will even stick and seal any niggles / residues of old paint peeling 👍 the primer is formally what I call WP136, I believe the code is changed, but it’s the only AkzoNobel primer / edge sealer on the Holmans website.. there’s a PaintHQ discount code, just enter PAINTHQ on the website at checkout 👍 just quickly, there’s another AkzoNobel / Sikkens product that’s WB and great at stain blocking - blocks tannins in oak / hardwood.. I believe it’s still called WP198, like I say it’s great, just takes a little longer to dry.. keep in touch my friend, it’s great to get your feedback.. regards Pete.. Ps I plan to do videos covering tip selection etc along with other tips and tricks that would help 💙💯

      It’s not actually that bad buddy, the masking process gets quicker with practice, especially using a Hand Masker.. you make up time when you get spraying, takes minutes to whip round a room.. then the finish you achieve Vs brush / roller is mind blowing.. you don’t get tired of the positive comments you receive from customers 😆 ..as for the cleanup, again you do quicken up the process with practice.. I much prefer cleaning out a sprayer Vs cleaning up brushes / rollers / scuttles and trays etc 🙈 ..thanks for your input my friend, much appreciated.. regards Pete

    Odly enough the last 2 jobs I’ve done i used the 208 FFLP tips on. First job was using hapftprimer and it sprayed bloody marvellous @900 psi. This week same tip but spraying zinsser 123! I wouldn’t normally use zinsser because I know from past experience they don’t spray too well. I hadn’t planned things out too well, at a pinch I had to buy the 123! and never again. I couldn’t get it to spray too well even though I’d eased it by 20% and @1500 psi.

      @@PaintHQ good morning Pete. Yup that’s exactly why it’s worth knowing these things tbh. The tritech tip seemed to give a better fan and slightly better finish than the FFLP but, for me, I think I’ll stick with the FFLP tips on woodwork as I’m genuinely spraying at lower pressure and saving the piston on the GXFF. Next time I’ll make sure I’m more prepared and, have the paint I’d rather use than spraying zinsser! Every time I’ve sprayed it ( 123 and 123 + ) it’s given me nothing but trouble. I’ll give the axonobel one a try at some time.
