Hey English Language Learners: Take some advice from your average english speaking joe who doesn't teach english. Use whatever phrases you want in english no matter how annoying they are. Just use them, Keep it simple stupid. Don't listen to someone who has a pet peeve about it. I love how each translation in mandarin is just 一般般， 马马虎虎。还行。all the same. Use any word you want it's ok to use it as long as you understand the meaning and how to use it. I hate 马马虎虎 in chinese, I personally don't use it. But I use whatever word or phrase I learned to express myself better and as long as I understand it and know when it is the right time to use it it's fine, because fluent and barrier free communication is key.
When they say what about you, they are asking the question back to you. For example, you may have said "How are you" And they could have replied "I'm doing alright, what about you" To this, you could also respond with something likr "I'm doing good" "I'm fine" "I'm alright" and so on. They are asking the same question you asked them
