    On my Type R I've changed the radiator, the radiator Hoses, the intercooler, intercooler piping, water wetter etc. The most important cooling mod I did was change the front grill to one that's at least 3 times more open. It made a massive difference. People change the Rad and not the grill. You won't get a single benefit if you can't get air to it.

    • @Boostd4
      @Boostd4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had a grill sitting on my workbench for a few months, I have to get on this. Curious...did you do a vented hood as well?

      @@Boostd4 I haven't. Definitely thinking about it but so far everything else I've done has helped a good amount. Doing the Turbo and Titanium Downpipe first then revisit more cooling if needed. What grill did you buy?

      @@thinkforyourself5672 I just picked up one of the Varis type clones. It's the more square opening, but it's huge. I've been hearing more about this being one of the more important mods to help with cooling...more air. It still blows my mind that Honda didn't put an oil cooler on this car.

    Very informative and factual explanation. Just came from a ZL1 that had tons of coolers. The setup is very similar to my 2020 Supra which did not overheat at the track in the summer even though it had the same water cooled integrated exhaust manifold (which is great for warming up oil/water on a cold day on the street however!). The 2 big differences is the Supra has it's turbo down low and off to the side so it easily dissipates heat, and the bigger one is that it had 3 more coolant radiators than the Type R. Yes 3. Had 2 big radiators in the traditional location, and 2 aux on each side where the CTR has room but has block off plates. Also has rotary valve thermostat to control high and low temp circuits and used an oil to water cooler to keep oil temps in check, used a water to air intercooler, and even used coolant for the AC condenser unit so there isn't even an AC condenser or air to air intercooler in front of the radiator! Great system actually. Maybe the 11th gen Type R will come track ready from Honda with cooling?

  • @thedriverux
    @thedriverux 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Awesome video.
    It seems that the Type R has similar overheating woes as my MK3 RS. The coolant is used to cool many things and gets routed to different components (differentials front + rear on my car as well as the block for emissions thingys like you explained). Take a look at what the ECU determines what is "safe" and where it takes its measurements for temp in order to pull timing. My car relies on a estimated temp since it lacks sensors in all of the points of cooling used by the coolant. So in the end you can add all the measures for improved or efficient cooling, yet the ECU could still be pulling timing due to its programmed safe tolerances that could be too conservative to push it.
    Good luck on your journey to cooler temps and faster laps!

    U would probably love an intercooled centrifugal supercharger kit on the s2k.
    Need to mod the bodywork and front frame on the fk type R in order to fit all the extra cooling goodies on there. A lot of research and work is required at this point.
    An aftermarket vented hood might help a lot with cooling. Plus there are a lot of thermal blankets and shields for turbo systems available to help engine bay temps.

  • @power_of_r6033

    Turbocharged cars' weakness has always been heat. However that weakness doesnt really show untill u actually push the car very hard such as in track conditions as you mentioned in the start of the video. Your average joe driving an FK8 and just drag racing will probably never have this problem

    On the performance front, the 2020 Honda Civic Type R's grille opening is now 13 percent bigger, which Honda claims it allows the engine to run 18 degrees Fahrenheit cooler on the track. This is a welcome change considering the overheating issues early cars had when taken to track days. Compensating for the decrease in downforce brought on by this new grille, the car's front splitter has also been reworked.

    Couldn't help but chuckle at Honda loving simplicity in their engine bay engineering. That might have been the case 20 years ago, but the decision to incorporate turbos into everything changes that model up quite a bit. I know that folks love their CTRs and I'd never deny owners their thrills, but I sure wish that Honda had stuck with their NA, high-revving power plants. It really is ok to have 'just' around 200hp in a lighter vehicle.

    • @FlyinGato

      It would be a dream is Honda made a newer high revving engine, like Kerim said, a high revving inline 6 would be a dream come true, but even a high revving 4 banger with 260-280 HP would be beast. The lack of extra coolers can be explained by Honda's drive towards simplicity

    The lack of any additional cooling does in fact keep it from being a track car. Racing is about details and complications and not simplification and sorry but that is what it is. BTW is a turbo a complication??? I never see any leak problems on the Camaro forum although I can attest you can get a rock thru one of them. Any SS or above Camaro or even a Standard Vette has additional radiators usually two. Then an oil cooler ,then aux trans coolers and often a rear diff cooler. A better design might have been to put the exhaust and turbo in the back of the engine and intake in the front and keep that heat back there. That is what Audi\VW is doing for FWD vehicles. Changes the plumbing for the intake quite a bit and I suppose trying to push the boost over a longer distance may add turbo lag.

    How many minutes does it take to over heat, and in what kind of temperature?
    Also how fast or slow of a track? Faster tracks won't have this problem as much as slower tracks

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It all depends on ambient temp, how much extra power you're tuned to, and how much WOT you're doing. Slower tracks may actually have less of an issue, as long straights send a TON of heat into the cooling system, because you're WOT and full boost for quite a long time.

    • @charliesmith7942

      @FlyinGato my time attack series runs on 2 tracks mostly that the lap times are around 1:20.00 to 1:38:00.00 lap times. And sessions are 4-5 laps maximum. So the longest amount of time I'd be pushing the car is 7 to 8 minutes at a time.
      From what I gather most issues are coming from people who try and run 15 minutes or more at a time.

    A common mistake - modify the heck out of the cooling system of a car and expect overheating to disappear. A very simple solution is to cut the bonnet to allow hot air after radiator to exit the engine bay. Cooling is all about extracting as much hot air in the engine bay as possible.

    Radiator fluid? You mean, coolant? 2:11

  • @djhrjeiwhri

    Then the problem is its cooling capacity

  • @raulferro977
    @raulferro977 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Isn't that the norm for "performance oriented" turbocharged cars? I own a ZC33S and everytime I run it hard for extended periods the oil and water/ coolant temps raise a lot (too much) so you just drive like a granny for a while and it goes back to normal temps. I'm sure most turbo *factory* cars are similar.

      yea, heat is always problem, just wish Honda didn't use coolant to cool down the exhaust

    first you didn't have bigger radiator. those 2017 -2019 ctr grill is blocking air flow.. buy the 2020 -2021 front grill

    the ek9 civic type r and the dc2 integra type r are the best hondas ever produced. you probably have never driven either. the s2000 in third or maybe even fourth after the eg.

      But would a larger rad resolve the overheating issue? Last I looked into this issue, I didn’t think a larger radiator was a solution?

    • @charleshu5752
      @charleshu5752 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2020 refresh I believe has a bigger radiator, thicker one so it might running cooler for longer, but not expecting it to not overheat. The turbo generates too much heat and this is a problem for most turbo 4s,WRX, Golf R and STI all have the problem and ended up cutting timing. I just wish the N/A days come back where I can run my S2000 around the same track on the same condition for longer period of time

    • @FlyinGato

      it's usually against regulation, and not sure if the aero of the car would be helped by that, necessarily

      @@FlyinGato im not super versed in FK8s, but it's possible it might not do enough to keep temps down as long as you would want. The RS (my car) has similar problems that couldn't be resolved with an oil cooler, no matter where you put it. People have tried the foglight area as a dedicated area, directly in front with direct cooling to the oil cooler, deflectors etc... This is a Honda, think simple. Start with the radiator, maybe even go beyond high capacity, and look for a triple pass. A radiator alone gave me more laps with out cool down inbetween.

    #3. Because 99.9% of this cars owners can’t drive properly.
