  • We review the updated 2020 Honda Civic Type R. The enthusiasm for this car has been constant and
    The Type R still dominates the FWD performance scene. We detail the changes good and bad including the cooling system. Fun and affordable sports cars are dying off and the factories being idled this may be a critical time to buy one. The VW Golf R, Veloster N, Miata, Focus RS, and 370Z are the other options.

    Can you defeat the engine noise?

    • @savagegeese
      @savagegeese  4 ปีที่แล้ว +502

      Yes by removing the glove box surround and plastics and removing a wiring harness to module. They did not give you a normal way to turn it off.

      @@savagegeese That's similar to how you unplug the fake noise box in a GTI/Golf R, except you have to get at it from under the hood (I know, because I scraped up my hand doing it myself when the VW service department wouldn't). Why why why is it like this? It would solve every problem I have with fake engine noise if these companies would just give them an on/off switch so some of us could just turn it off and forget about it forever. Would be the simplest thing in the world.

      @@giovanhagar not sure if they made any improvements but I have a 2019 CTR and never had any issues with grinding. I think mostly is 2017-2018 cars, but not to say 2019 cars don’t have this issue but I don’t hear about as many complaints.
      As far as the overheating they opened up the grill to help with that but plenty of cars over heat on the track if you aren’t careful. You have to remember it’s turbo four cylinder so it’s going to make some heat but from what I understand it’s not every CTR that gets tracked over heats.

    I was deciding among an STI, GTI, CIVIC TYPE R, and Veloster N. Thanks to a silver lining of quarantine, I got to drive every car by myself. The Veloster for me took last place overall. Well after having my mind blown by the type R, I couldn't justify the price because a used STI seemed to be a better deal. I got into a 2016 STI and was told to "take my time" test driving. I slammed it for 45 minutes and gave it a real hard thought and came to a conclusion: I called the Honda dealership and bought my 2020 Type R in the Subaru parking lot that day.

      I’m coming from a 2016 Sti myself and I like the 2020 type r so much better.
      I have the 2005 Sti as well and the 2016 doesn’t stack up to that car either imo. I’m not sure if I can put a finger on it, but the engine feels less perky, suspension feels more numb and the car feels like it was being kept from realizing it’s full potential. I guess if I were to choose one word, dull comes to mind. I just had more fun driving the 2005.

    • @doctorrobert60
      @doctorrobert60 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timkono5645 I agree. I think the 2005 is less burdened with mandated safety and emissions equipment, less insulation, thinner glass making the 2005 lighter. This would make it have better power to weight ratio which would make it faster and handle better.

      @timkono5645 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@doctorrobert60 One thing i can notice right away is that the hood is aluminum on the 04/05 sti and believe the roof as well which was done for weight savings. Lastly, there is no antenna as it is integrated into the rear window with the defroster. I also did a side to side visual comparo with the 05 engine and there are more lines and more attachments, which tells me that the engine was updated quite a bit to meet the emmissions regs you mention. it not just optimizes the cars performance with these little tweaks, it also makes the car's overall look very simple.

    I am in my mid 40s and I LOVE my 2019 Civic Type R. I guess I am old because I am not going to change a thing! As you get older you value something called a warranty and there is no way I am going to mess that up. If I want to go faster I have FORZA. As a husband and a father of a teenager this car is a keeper for sure. As we get into a time where some people want to electrify everything on 4 wheels I believe drivers cars like the Civic Type R represent the pinnacle of gas powered cars. Sure electric cars may be quicker but there is no better bond between man and machine than a great engine, a balanced chassis and a good manual. This car will stay in our family to remind my children of what cars that were meant to be driven felt like vs the cars that drive you. Aside from the barfing, great job all around. You might want to get that checked out though.

The way Honda set up the smooth power delivery in this 300+ HP car that gets close to 30 MPGs is pretty impressive and this is all with great reliability so I do stand by my claim that the Type R represents one of the cars that is at the pinnacle of gas powered tech. Did you know, the Type R just set another new record this time on the Suzuka Race Track? This car runs circles around any Subaru including the S209. From seating position, steering feedback, shifter feel, ride, body rigidity, interior room and comfort, cornering precision/overall handling, high speed stability, linear power delivery ......I literally can’t think of any area other than perhaps engine sound where this car isn’t so far superior and the fact that it gets there with FWD is like winning an ass kicking contest with only one leg. I’ll admit I thought this car was ridiculous when Honda first announced it was going to do an over 300HP front wheel drive car in a segment that already had (at the time 2017) some great AWD competition but after spending time in one it’s truly a world class driving experience coming from someone who has owned several Porsche GT cars. The fact that it barely depreciates (assuming you can purchase one for MSRP?) and maintains it value also speaks volumes to what a great car it is

I decided to go back and have a look at a Type R as it was 4 door as well, the room inside is huge, almost Accord like just a few years ago! It is so comfortable as well with plenty of power to make it fun for a dad mobile. I love how much room the trunk has so I can toss a stroller and bags in there with ease. I passed on a 2000 Integra Type R back then when they were new and said I would never make that mistake again and bought my current type R and have been so happy with it meeting my needs. If you are considering a WRX STI, go drive one of these, you probably will end up buying them. I wasn't allowed to test drive so I jumped in a Facebook group and asked someone locally if I could drive theirs and they were so friendly and helpful to let me drive it. this is my dream car ever since it came out,
    I was looking at videos years after years! someone like my age could never pay for this...
    I'm 23 years old and with some luck in my life, I did it!
    I achieved my goal and made it happen. my dream came out, and finally, I can get my type R from the honda shop nearby straight out of the showroom.
    I worked soo hard to get this, I am a driver for work, and in 2020 I exceeded over 120,000km in 1-year sometimes working for 72 hours a week.
    after my work, I go straight to my office to trade the stock market and crypto, for another 1 to 4 hours
    I have been going through a lot of depression and I hope this will give me some peace in my mind whenever im sad or depressed.

    another amazing video. Outside of some brake pad woes I went through with Carbotech for the track, the Type R is an amazing car. I considered upgrading from my 2019 to the 2020 but it's just not enough additional value for me to trade up. Maybe I am weird, but at 37 years old I have no issues with the styling but I also love my german car styling as well. I don't take a hard stance on the flashiness of the Type R aesthetic vs. my much more refined B9 S4 or E92 M3. I love them all. This video sums up the Type R so well. I would encourage anyone considering one of these cars to take what this video says to heart. As someone who has owned this for 16 months now I love it and added a few cooling bits like upgraded intercooler, also upgraded to a Mugen steering wheel and short shifter/knob...with some good tires it's really an amazing "do everything" car. It's more enjoyable at Road America than my M3, and it's practical with the hatch space and 4 doors and the Comfort mode of adaptive dampening is really amazing for what this car is.
    I do have concerns about the computers in the car as it ages and reliability over time which is completely unproven, but I think as Mark says - you need to weigh everything when it comes to cars, and something to weigh is "if you want a modern car, you will potentially sacrifice some autonomy and ability to DIY fix some things or maintain your car on the cheap" but the upside in this case is that there really isn't anything that does what the Type R does for a driving enthusiast as a daily, practical machine. And to those of us who have bought the car, it's well worth it.

    • @BigBear--
      @BigBear-- ปีที่แล้ว

      All you really need for these more modern cars is a decent scanner, that has bidirectional controls, which you can pick up for around $300-$500 on places like Amazon.
      With that in hand and some googling skills, or even better a personal subscription to ALLDATA, you can DIY anything.

It's leaps and bound different from the older type rs and it's wildly successful and respected. As long as the s2k has a honda engine and a track tuned suspension it will sell just fine. I daily drive a GT86 and test drove the CTR today. The power from this driveline is incredible. I love the pedal responds and mechanical shift feel. The directness reminds me of my s2k, it almost felt NA. Many say the sound this four popper makes doesn't match its looks but I wasn't disappointed with the sound. More loudness would make it too ricy for me.
    The art of FWD is perfected in this car BUT.. I still notice the unrest in the steering when pushing the car. When driving my 86 home I immediately felt what I miss in the CTR. The test car had 11K miles on it and the front tires were almost done. They go for about $200-300 a piece so the consumables on the car seem to be high (with the 86 I do double the miles of spirited driving and the tires are still reasonable).
    Driving the car in comfort mode it felt too wobbly for me. I guess drive modes are fashionable these days but I would be happy with some ohlins or KWs if that would lower cost and complexity.
    Bottom line... I'm not sure if I can part with the 86... the 86 dances with you and you feel it with the hips. The CTR is brilliant in its way but I like how Mark says "it makes you wish for Honda to do something RWD".

I wanted something new. Something different. I think overheating is a big issue with those who run aggressive tunes. My final thoughts are that as a young kid I watched the car scene blow up with body kits and wheel mods. Never had enough money to make it happen so I spectated. Fast forward to 2018 I bought my car with that same child like excitement except instead of having some horrible looking body kit that doesnt fit honda gave all the exterior flare like a body kit from the factory. @@aaronbryan5095 It isn't just Honda being different. It's the entire automotive world and what people want. What the target markets want. Modern car manufacturers can't go back to how they were in the past. And a lot of normal people want different things anyways. I despise crossovers as do many car enthusiasts but we aren't the majority. Small modern families with practicality needs and a desire to sit higher are the majority. It's sad that we won't get a basic car that's also a perfect enthusiast car again. We can always get close in a more modern way.

    I wish I could get over the looks of the entire 10th gen Civic in its entirety. I have always bought Hondas and this time around when I needed a new commuter I went with the Corolla hatch because I just hate the way these cars look. Hard to argue how good it is. If I could have this car and never have to look at the outside, and just enjoy the drive, I would be happy to have one in my driveway. For now I keep my K20 powered Civic SI as a weekend ripper.

    I've had my type r for a year and a half, and it is easily the best dual purpose car I have had. Comfortable on the street and enough room for the kids. Also very enjoyable on the track. The looks are going to be subjective, but with smaller wheels the car looks much better in my opinion.

    I loved the CTR when it first came out and told myself I would eventually save up and buy one, however the initial price point the local dealers were constantly fisting me with spooked me away, I waited the first year towards the end of that years run, but the prices never quite touched MSRP A local dealer had one up for 65K for half the year before it sold even when I tried peaceful, seriously, and quite angrily attempting at negotiations, I made phone calls out of state and thought I nabbed one two states out, But they were not truthful about the end price (Dealer addons as $500 1 year nitro fill in tires, $500 oil change for a year, $1000 1 year rotations, $1000 bumper to bumper) $3000 over MSRP. They would not take them off even after explaining I would not be travelling over 800 miles for a free rotation and oil change I would rather perform myself, which came to their conclusion of telling me it would void the warranty. They thought since I drove 827 miles I would be happy to drive away with anything new, They were wrong, And I let them know that. I figured the first year was a sham for me so I kept waiting, Same story the next year, And the next, When these new models (2020) hit the floors I again called around even out of state but it was the same exact story, I won't lie Honda's tiny changes keep the hype and price point sky-high. I haven't even test drove this car I thought I wanted but that being said I could not bring myself to EVER pay over msrp for a car (not including legitimate options), Even one I 'thought' I adored. I gave up on it and something honestly sparked in me that wasn't my younger "ricer" days slapping a turbo on a D17 and a bodykit, While shopping around with my now paid trade in and some cash I started some research on other cars, What hit me was honestly the now phasing out Subaru STi, It was me as a true little kid when I first saw Collin Mcrae on TV, Driving that 555 and that oh so sweet sound of the EJ. It's considered an ancient, dinosaur engine of course, It's the last of it's model, and you know what?, I've honestly deep down, have always wanted one since the dawn of miniature intelligence in my tiny brain, I had just forgotten about it. So of course I called around, and i'm striking below MSRP locally!, As in 4-6K UNDER, Compared to the CTR which is typically 5K OVER, That's a savings of 10K Average, I gave it some thought, The only reason I really wanted the CTR was me thinking it was a good deal (If per honda's advertised MSRP) But you have to be willing to buy a used CTR with 15-30K MILES at that point. Don't get me wrong, I am sure this (CTR) is a great starting point for a track car, If FWD is your thing, And I think I speak for a few that may read this that their first car might have been a honda, but do some soul-searching before you sign off on a contract 5K over MSRP, There are other options out there, Do you really, really need a hatch? Do you really, really plan on going to the track, taking the classes?, Think these things out, I don't want to say it but the CTR seems mostly hype, the prices show, If you're willing to pay 42K-48K for a CTR, There is better for you out there, I don't want to call the folks who nab there new CTR'S at MSRP liars, but I tried, and I failed to do so, And that's what turned me away, And that's also why I couldn't pass up on paying 34K for a new 2020 STi at 0.9% (with the recaro's!), And fulfill a real childhood dream, So thank you Honda dealer markups, Thank you.

      The ctr is the more refined car in nearly every aspect. Riding in a sti vs the CTR the Subaru feels dated, from interior to engine characteristics. The dynamic suspension, etc aren't necessary for "enthusiasts" like me, they can split the difference on comfortable suspension vs compliant stiffness.
      The civic platform has the edge there, and the CTR is able to polish it to near perfection for a fwd car.
      Aesthetics wise I like it, but it's polarising.
      That being said, I can't buy a car over MSRP, no idea why other people do. Honda let's it happen so no go from me. Not to mention Honda dealers act like the cars sell themselves, which unfortunately they seem to do.

      @@richracing7420 No doubt it is more refined, And maybe my choice would have changed if the comparison was in a even price field, but is the refined nature worth paying $10k more? As how it is in reality, I'm sure there are much more refined cars that surpass the CTR when it's compared to it's actual real-world price bracket. (Audi,BMW,Mercedes,Lexus,Genesis low to mid models).
      I'm sure some people stretch their existing budget trying to reach for a CTR's MSRP already, and sadly sign off on an extra markup when they don't realize they end up in an entirely different bracket of vehicles that ask for much more refinement as standard anyways, which is why comparisons against this car are always those in a cheaper bracket (everything that's under 40k). Besides, I don't want to think the dealers intentions in interest rates when they do get someone hooked on the bloated price, It's just not worth it at that price point, unless you pay cash in full, I wouldn't try to shop for one of these again.

    Man I'm about to drop ~$4k to make my Mazdaspeed 3 more track capable: coilovers, misc suspension bits, radiator and oil cooler, in addition to the brakes and tires I've already got. The type R is extremely appealing to me, it's got all the versatility of a hot hatch and it comes from the factory significantly more track-ready than my car will ever be. The ONLY reason I don't have one yet is because I don't have a second car, and I couldn't bear to watch a new type R rust away from all the road salt.
