    Thanks, great summary! So basically we need to do at least some of these mods:
    1) Bigger Intercooler
    2) Replace the front grill
    3) Remove A/C
    4) Add an oil cooler

      How much do those cost? and I guess we need to do ALL of those to track it? I am looking to get a CTR

    On a turbo car, during the Summer, you can mix more water in and use less coolant 70/30 works better than 50/50 for cooling. It helps immensely!

    Bigger intercooler, mishimoto radiator n a oil cooler is the way to go. Coolant plus water wetter should also help. The grill would be nice, but if you can create a custom intake duct that would be better. Good luck hope things work out.

    You are wrong about the intercooler. It will make it worse because it will make more power.

  • @legofranco6681

    Bigger intercooler induces more dense air, more dense air = stronger explosion = more heat. Intercooler wont cool down the engine. A bigger radiator will.

    Enjoying your channel, just subscribed. Just picked up a 2017 civic type r. Also championship white. Thanks for continuously putting out good info for type r owners and sharing your experiences. I am thinking about customizing the two fake air vents on the front bumper and making them functional. Either cutting out all the pockets in Berkeley the mesh or just cutting out the whole center and replacing it with a metal black mesh. What do you think? Hoping it will give the engine more air flow.

    Just want to chime in here. I have not got my Type R yet but it’s coming. I’m stocking all my mods while waiting. HKS Intercooler, Spoon Radiator, SEIBON Carbon, Sports Grille....so far so good. The last thing you talked about in your video..the oil cooler. That’s a challenge. The fake vents will need to be altered or a completely mesh grill will need to be installed. I was at an HKS Fair event and had a look at their oil cooler build. It’s not the cleanest design. The Greddy Oil Cooler ( Circuit Package ) looks a lot more intuitive. On the other hand, I believe whichever maker you decide to go with, the gains may be minimal if Type R FK8 owners can’t get air flowing to that space in the fender. All in all, you are spot on in your description of the cooling issues and solutions. Can’t wait to see what you do. I’ll be documenting my Tuning Project from April 2019.

  • @dunphyjp

    To my knowledge Mishima has an accessory radiator to aid in extra cooling, most oil coolers I’ve seen sit behind the driver side fake front intake. I’d imagine the honeycombed front grill will defining help (frankly I’d love to know how it changed, if at all, the fuel economy and aerodynamic efficiency of the front). You should also try higher pressure radiator caps to help cooling too. I’d uses adding a turbo blanket and exhaust wrap to the down pipe and front pipe would help a decent amount too.

      Beg to differ, the whole point of a Type R is it a race spec of the platform without removing the requirement to be road legal, so it was meant to be tracked as well as dailyed if needed.

    I recently installed a Mishimoto Performance Intercooler in my 2018 Si, and it dropped the charged air temp from 107F on the hot side to 95F on the cold side. I am waiting for a hot day (90 degrees F plus) to push it and than do some measurements. I was really lucky, I picked it up brand new still in the box for $300 from a guy who totalled his 2017 Si in an accident a few days before it was going to be installed on his car

    Glad I learned somethings in college, (Laws of Thermordynamics). Think of the engine as a bucket of heat. Via the laws of thermodynamics that is exactly what it is. Right now your overflowing the bucket. You have to increase the size of the bucket or decrease the flow of heat into the bucket. Radiator--- check, bigger bucket!! Intercooler-- I doubt it unless sombody, (nobody) could tell you it reduces the combustion temp a considerable amount. Furthermore the temp it reduced IAT from compression is just fed back thru the radiator anyways so people who think the intercooler helps with engine cooling should check their math. Oil Cooler-- I doubt it as I suspect it will get to the high temp just gets there slower. Bigger oil pan is the answer there but perhaps nobody makes one. The 6.2L in the Camaro's and Vettes run 10 quarts of oil and an oil cooler. Air flow--- check!! Get that new grill. A/C compressor is a non-starter, you need that. Your steps should be radiator and grill. The other stuff in addition to those may help but only marginally and therefore should be attempted only after you make the larger gains via radiator and air flow. I had seen that Honda cooled the exhaust manifold. They got caught on that one. Hey it is a 4-cylinder engine (small bucket) and you can only throw so much heat at it. Turbo adds heat, going from say 200 to 300Hp added a lot of heat and these manifolds added more. They should have seen this coming if they wanted to make a "track car" but folks make mistakes.

    • @hyojoonus
      @hyojoonus 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      An oil cooler is essential especially with a turbocharger since the charger will heat up the oil super quick. The charger will also perform better and the engine will feel more responsive because oil is kept at optimal temp. It also adds oil capacity which is nice. If the oil is not cooling fast enough, add a larger cooler.

    • @amazoidal
      @amazoidal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also reduce the incoming air temp to the induction system. You'll need less fuel. Carnot's Formula.

  • @AutodromoF1
    @AutodromoF1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mishimoto makes universal oil coolers, and you can get a thermostatic sandwich plate (it goes between the oil filter and the engine) so it only flows oil to the oil cooler when the temps get up there. Not when you’re trying to warm up your car. Also install an oil temp/pressure sensor and gauge so you know how the oil cooler is working.
    Really interested to see the results from these mods.

    I believe the problem is the turbo placement in the engine

  • @gerardjoaquino8856
    @gerardjoaquino8856 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Personally, i stay away from turbocharged cars. Heat soak is overlooked by a lot of enthusiasts until it rears its head. If it can't be helped, look first at increasing air flow to your radiator and venting that hot air outward as fast as you can (hood vents). I wouldn't really recommend an oil cooler upgrade if you daily the car as not getting your oil up to temp will cause another problem. You can also duct some air from your wheel well to your intake area. Hope this helps!

      @REEL SIXX obviously you don't know what an air duct is. I own this car. All the air ducts are real. The only thing fake are the plastic vents. The two black vents in the front and back are the only non functional peices on the car. All the other vents work and serve a purpose. And this car is built off of the Civic. Those fake vents are on the Civic. They just built on to the car, they didn't add those to the Type R

      Love Like a Hurricane My Golf R definitely pulls timing/boost when it is hot though. It drives very different early in the morning when compared to the afternoon here in the Arizona summer. The radiator fan also runs for a few minutes after turning off the car. These high end turbo for cylinders are always a balancing act with heat.

    • @hyojoonus
      @hyojoonus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VW's definitely do and all factory modern turbocharged small engines do. Few pulls and one can get the temps over 210F on engine and DSG easy on a warm day. The oil and transmission really need their own cooling because the turbocharger is hard on the oil.

    Have you thought the intercooler itself might be causing an issue? There's three things trying to remove heat from them in a row. The intercooler, condenser then the radiator. Is there no way you can have custom intercoolers at both sides of the car, under the car headlights?
    I had similar issues with a turbo DC2 Type R. I lifted the intercooler out of the flow of the rad and my cooling issues instantly disappeared.
    Also had a larger capacity rad but that just delayed the overheat protect kicking in on Hondata ECU.
    I feel your pain on this.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the way the intercooler sits is under everything, so it's not blocking the air flow

    • @mickl8212
      @mickl8212 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's even worse then, there must be a way round this as Honda are running the CTR in the BTCC without cooling issues. I don't think removing the AC condenser would fix it either.

  • @mpgattuso1

    Elias, I enjoy your videos. I think you’re mistaken about an intercooler reducing engine coolant temps though. If my logic is correct, what the intercooler will do is reduce intake air temperature. This in turn will reduce cylinder head temp a bit before combustion which will allow you to tune more aggressively without running into detonation or preignition. The cooler air being more dense with oxygen will burn with more energy, creating more power AND more heat. From a tuning and engine safety perspective it is a great idea. I don’t believe it will do anything for the heat created after combustion occurs though. For that you need to increase your heat sink (radiator) capacity and ensure proper airflow.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're totally right, but if you only cool the intake and don't tune for more power, you'll end up cooler intake, an then exhaust temps, which leads to cooler temps overall

    • @mpgattuso1
      @mpgattuso1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FlyinGato Thanks for the reply! It would be really cool to see how each individual upgrade impacts the temp issue at the track, would make for a great video series! It’s a bit disappointing Honda didn’t do a little more for heat management from the factory. Loving the content as usual.

      Excuse my non-engineering aptitude, but just a weird novice far fetched idea; in the AirForce we worked on engines that had and I'm sure still exist as they are such workhorses.. fuel/oil heat exchanges - cool fuel cools the oil and as hot oil heats fuel.. maybe its more dangerous due to fuel despite similar idea only with waterif it works for turbine propulsion aircraft why couldn't work with race cars? or is that too extreme?just my 2 centssupport your efforts, but why or what is Honda responsibly doing or planning to resolve this?While thanks for bring this and sharing all this with us, yet its tainting my love of Type R just a tad.. is there anything I should really worry about or maybe its better to wait this out for better outcome? if you ask me just like you raised the transmission issue w/ Honda Corp, maybe this is another one they need to address before next yrs models.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That fuel and oil cooler sounds interesting, but I wouldn't want to run extra fuel lines, I think an oil to air cooler should do the trick. As for Honda's responsibility, they designed the car to be a fast street car, taking it to the track and driving it like I do wasn't in the works for them. They would say, for my case, to remove the AC condenser, like they do in their racing efforts. It's been proven that works too fix the cooling issues.

    *QUALITY* Oil cooler (this means not Mishimoto), radiator, change grille.
    This is all common knowledge, and has been for a while now. TH-cam vloggers are something else, I swear.

    Yes but you seem to be the only person with heat issues and all these problems which is making Honda bad and if you changed the gear ⚙️ instead of only using 3 gears and Revving the tits out of it lol 😂

      No we’re all having heat issues, that’s why most of us have “hot laps” then normal laps to cool down. It’s a big problem to me because I want constant hot laps, and I want the car to last a long time.

    Y the Honda type r which did the record on the nubugring by a professional racing driver no problems with car ? I don't think this guy know what he is on about and I don't think he is that good to do any records lol 😂

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well we shall see about records, but those type Rs have the A/C condensor, which is in front of the radiator, removed. I don't want to do that, so I will be fixing the heat issues another way.

    Its a Honda what do you expect ! Easy fix just hang two 16 inch 12 volt fans on the front fender, but because its a Honda your alternator will burn out ! How much did you pay for that P.O.S. HONDA = JUNK !
