    The Honda Civic Type R crushes the competition, and all for less money. At $35,000, you might not expect the Civic to be faster than the more expensive Ford Focus RS, VW Golf R, and even the limited edition Subaru WRX STI Type RA, but it is. Whether it's acceleration, track times, braking distances, useable cargo space, or efficiency, the Civic Type R puts down incredible numbers.
    At the heart of the Type R is the K20C1 engine, a two-liter inline four-cylinder that's turbocharged packing 295 lb-ft of torque, and 306 horsepower. In this video we'll explore the numbers surrounding the Civic Type R, and deep dive into the engine to find out just what makes it so special.

    High performance and reliability. Well done Honda! In the Type R for the first 100,000 miles just change the oil and the filters. In other high performance cars, after the first 100,000 miles it is time to change the car. Younger people may not appreciate this but I LOVE how Honda designed this car to have a timing chain vs a rubber timing belt. A rubber timing belt is like a break down waiting to happen and the fact that this timing chain will last the life of the engine is another reason why I am proud to be a Type R owner. Again well done with the video and well done Honda!

    • @scott4207
      @scott4207 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      With a belt, it’s a maintenance item which if adhered to correctly, should be fine. A timing chain however only gets replaced when it goes wrong, either rattling or when the timing chain assembly has jumped etc, at which point its possibly too late. Also timing chains are heavily reliant on good service intervals, partially correct oil grade. Timing belts aren’t. There are pros and cons for both setups, me personally I’d rather have a belt. Easier and usually cheaper to change, and less reliant on previous owners maintenance.

      @@scott4207 You bring up some good points. For me, after working on cars for more than 30 years I would rather have a timing chain. You bring up a good point about used cars. If you buy one used one of the first things you should do is change the timing belt for piece of mind. After all the headaches of owning old cars I really appreciate buying a new car with a warranty. I just don't have the time I used to to work on cars. When I start my car I just want it to work.

I know the 2.0T is tamed down in the Accord but it's still a rocker and blast to drive. The transmission is also the same as the one in Type R, just different gear ratios, etc. Bonus is it's $5K cheaper too than the Type R (not a deciding factor but still nice).

    I’ve found that people who dis on the track proven Honda FWD configuration are the type to wrap their RWD cars around light poles in parking lots much. The point is, if you can’t drive to 7/10ths the limit of any car, you have no right to say which configuration is better. The FD2 type-r civics were faster around Suzuka then the S2000 and the NSX . It also made less horsepower. Now, we have a 300hp civic with an even better suspension and aero package.

    I work for a Honda dealership. If you are looking for a comfortable street var that looks good, it does not cost much to make the accord faster then the type r and you get all the luxury of a high trim accord (which is comparable to most luxury cars in quality and amenities).
    The cost is pretty comparable as well. The accord is more, but you are also paying for that luxury instead of that "racecar" feel. Type R's are nice. I would love one, but if you want a fast, comfortable street car, the accord wins in my book. Type R wins on the track.

SHO's have been clocked at 5.0 sec 0-60 , and 14.1 quarter mile in stock form. The grocery getter pulls pretty hard on the top end, it's not slow at all for a big heavy car. From about 65-70 mph roll to about 110-115 she's still pouring the coal, so 140-145 feels very attainable but we've never run it that fast.

    • @npaul4171
      @npaul4171 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@farhatali4031 Sure - in many States they have all the right in the world to mark it up to high heck (of course it defeats the purpose of the car). My beef is when they list them as "MSRP $35,xxx" on auto websites and then you go there and they have hand-written notes that imply a markup. I experienced this first hand at several dealerships. If their website said, "This car has a MSRP of $34,995 - as it is a limited edition car, we want $40,000," cool, more power to them, and good luck. If they are selling for $38k out the door, then they're conducting more ethical business than what I experienced around here. (Things may have changed now that the car is not quite as new.)

    Last year we purchased a new 2017 Accord Coupe with the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder. One of the primary reasons for the purchase was the non-turbocharged engine in the higher trim levels vs. 2018 models. Our previous Honda had 260,000 miles with zero issues and the engine did not burn any oil between changes. However the car was totaled (not our fault) so we purchased the Accord. I just do not trust the long term reliability of tubo vs. normally aspirated engines even if they are Hondas. I wonder if Honda or any body has any long term reliability comparisons (actual or MTBF analysis) between turbo vs. non-turbo engines. I would also like to see a comparison of likely maintenance costs as I suspect higher costs for tubo engines

      It depends. My 1999 saab 9-3 turbo has well over 200k miles on the original turbo. But it depends on the brand. I can trust saab (obviously) because I have both owned one and they have been making turbocharged cars since the 70s and they are known to be some of the most reliable cars on the planet. I would never buy a ford turbo tho because its ford and ive seen countless issues with their implementation, but i might trust honda because they seem to do a pretty good job at keeping things reliable, even if theyre new to certain technologies

    Can you PLEASE do a video on the base 2.0 N/A engine? K20C2
    I wonder how much different the base engine is regarding to the internals..?
    I can’t imagine it being that much more different since the base engine is a 2 L the type R would be cost-effective to build off the same assembly-line.
    Great videos as always!

    If only it was AWD. I was going to buy it, but went with the sti for Canadian winters. Lmao I raced a type r on a wet road, my sti completely destroyed it up to 160kph then the type r caught up. It is a really nice car, and very well designed, but I cant do a fwd car in 4 feet of snow.

    Tell people how 1.5T CRV generates more oil or gasoline delutes oil, the end result is more fluid in the oil pan over time

      A software update and a climate control unit replacement is now available to solve that issue.

      In all fairness, the Subaru gets marked up too and so did the Focus when it was first released. I'd be interested to see the average dealership prices of these cars since that's the number we're more likely to see a bill for should we purchase one.

      Yeah, I know. I was just comparing them all when they were first released. Kind of unfair to say the civic is the only one marked up.

    As far as direct injection on a turbo motor how are they combating valve deposits?

    • @aramcerritos
      @aramcerritos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Steven Young you would have to do an EGR delete. All DIT engines will gunk up without it

      Steven Young - The problem of valve deposits is greatly exaggerated. If it became a problem, you would just have your dealer fix it.

      EGR isn't the only issue with valve deposits, ring blow-by recirculated by PCV is also a major contributing factor...

      @@GH-oi2jf it is not. Not in high performance applications. This is coming from former mazdaspeed owner. I will not buy another direct injected engine unless it has dual injection. Even then I question reliability of injectors inside the cylinders. And by the way unless you have time and tools this is a couple thousand job from the dealer. Egr delete will increase highway fuel consumption and catch cans are not always an option in cold climates so neither is an acceptable solution.

    I have a 19 2.0T Sport Accord as my daily and it’s wonderful! We have three other vehicles that each have around 150-200hp more than the Honda, but the drivability just constantly amazes me. I’m kinda tempted by a Hondata tune, but it’s probably a waste
