It almost made me cry when she started to talk about at what angle your babies and your pets look at you the most..This is such an amazing speech thank you so much.
I am in tears. I need everyone who has ever struggled with the way they look to watch this video. I have spent so much of my life hating myself for being fat, but this talk brought me back to reality. At the end of my life, it’s not going to matter if I was fat or thin. What’s going to matter is the connections I made and the impact I had on others.
Thanks for being vulnerable in this talk. Sorry that people are being mean in the comments. It’s sad to see. Thanks for the talk, you have beautiful hair!!
As a person with a face dysmorphia, thank you. I used to abuse myself with being obsessed about how I look but now I’m more and more healing and falling in love with myself everyday. Loving yourself isn’t about being “perfect”, loving yourself is about being okay if others not view you as “perfect” because you are more than these terms. You are someone, you are yourself. Your existence in here means something.
beautiful person, beautiful message, and beautifully said. i love how genuine she is about everything, this mindset can be lifesaving. thank you for sharing.
Portrait photographer Teri Hofford explains five reasons why people think they look bad in photos: mirror image reversal, misalignment with portrayal, hyperfixation on insecurities, unrealistic expectations, and angle preferences. She offers insights to boost confidence in photos.
I read the title of this talk and thought "Yeah I know, it's because the picture is mirrored. Or maybe they also tell me about the reason that a 2D-picture is not able to fully capture a moment in the 3D-world with all the feelings and sensations that were involved." I almost didn't open this ted talk but I'm so glad I did. Thank you for sharing your perspective🌅
Excellent talk! As a photographer, I find that some of the wide angle lenses on smartphones are distorting faces in a very unnatural and awful way if the phones are not pointed at us from a selfie-stick distance. It's why Photoshop implemented lens correction features sorted by phone brand and model. I too, prefer to be behind the camera rather than in front of the lens.
@@TeriHofford I look forward to part 2, or more... 😊 These awful lens distortions might have also led to the countless "beauty" filters available nowadays. Phone camera wide angle lenses are mostly good for landscapes or, as previously mentioned, people at a certain distance. The confusing thing about the mirror image theory is that dual lens smartphone selfie cameras usually do take the picture as a mirror image, and yet, we still remain critical of the photo. This entire topic is linked to social media anxiety and lack of self-esteem due to artificial beauty standards and illusions. Thank you again, for diving into this fascinating topic.
I hate my voice when I hear it in a recording, but there was one time that I thought I was listening to myself in the first few seconds of the recording, and immediately my brain went into _"cringe mode",_ but when I realised it was actually someone else I immediately stopped hating the voice.
Yes to being photographed in ways that make me feel empowered and not the way the world has conditioned me to want to look. Thank you for this powerful message.
Thank you so much for this….it really puts things in perspective and wants me to be in more photos with my daughter, instead of the photographer because I’m insecure I’ll look too fat and embarrass her when she is older
Thank you I realize now the missed opportunity to be in photos with friends as I hate my photo being taken. From now on I’m just going to have fun and own it
I really enjoy THIS🥹 I used to lose my confidence when it comes to taking photos/selfies so I never took them, and I didn't think it's important. But when I have more chances to do it, I realize that I don't look that bad in the picture and think that this is the real me. Then, I start to feel better with taking photos more. Thank you for sharing us a great speech, this is gonna be one of my inspiring speeches👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
many of my friends say i look good in the photos that i dont like. and i really do believe that i am making a way bigger deal out of it than necessary. but tell that to my dysphoria that labels everything that reminds me of my past self as ugly and male. this is a really hard struggle for me 😅
1) Take a horrible picture of yourself on purpose. Reminds me of the first chapter of the book "Juggling for the Complete Klutz" where you toss the bean bag into the air and **make NO attempt to catch it** it didn't hurt anything, did it?
I look horrendous in photos because of my awkward body language and weird facial expressions. Unfortunately no amount of positivity will ever change that.
Thie is a very important talk for people at this day and age, you are falsely triggered by something you cant even understand. Is everything ok in your life?
I was right on track for a diet to fight my morbid obesity but thankfully today I’ve learned that all I need to do is to flip my photograph to look beautiful again.
Although it's true that beauty standards have conditioned us on right & wrong kinds of bodies, they are still subjective. Health standards though are objective, so please do not try to convince people that the "other extreme" is ok. It is not. It's good to alleviate the stress people (esp women) feel about not having the "perfect body", but please stop trying to normalize a body that can and will lead to health problems like diabetes, heart disease etc...
Good question. Not everyone knows this. Socialization is how our communities teach us what is socially acceptable. In this case, she's referring to women essentially being trained to behave a certain way, including focus on appearance as a priority (Not health. In fact, because we know appearance can symbolize health status, our social education (mostly through media) has been distorted to lead us to believe that ONLY certain physical characteristics indicate good health when that is not true. It's not that exclusive). Another social expectation is that women are primarily responsible for taking care of/maintaining social relationships with others in our networks. Men in the same types of societies typically are socialized to focus on being providers (e.g., money and housing) and taking on primary leadership roles.
Self love is important, but when you want to be loved by a stranger, not just your family and pets, you may need to put some effort into making yourself more attractive to others. Might be character change, life style change. There is always someone there who will love you for who you are now, but sometimes improving yourself slightly also improves confidence and helps with self love. Some people get stuck in a cycle of self improvement and it takes over their life though, creating a faux identity of an overly ambitious person, which becomes simply fake. Tweak yourself, dont change yourself 🫂
It's typically character improvement on one side or the other. Interestingly, many of the physical characteristics that we shame people for are positively correlated with/negatively influenced by the person experiencing shaming from other people. For example, I really struggled with acne from age 10 into my 20's. I got teased for it A LOT. You know what significantly influences/worsens acne? Stress, including stress from bullying. The more I did to "fix" it, the worse it got. Same thing goes for weight (gain and loss). No one NEEDS to look a certain way. The sooner we accept that fact, the better off we'll be. Our culture has gotten out of control believing that everything needs to be fixed. It has led us to break things that were fine or functioning well. Yes, there are things we can do to improve our overall health, but a lot of healing simply REQUIRES acceptance and support, even the physical things.
@corkhead0 what I said is the truth. I believe if she really loved herself she'd lose the weight and look so much better and be HEALTHIER. She is literally reducing her lifespan and you're applauding her. So who's really trolling?
It almost made me cry when she started to talk about at what angle your babies and your pets look at you the most..This is such an amazing speech thank you so much.

Wonderful presentation, Teri. I've re-learned to be a little kinder to myself in a time I really need to. Thank you.

What does “Socialised as a woman” mean?
What part isn't clear? Socialisation is different depending on whether your environment perceives you as male or female, or non-binary etc.
